"My Great
Grandfather (John Hanna) my Grandfather James (plus his brothers) and my Father, John Reid Hanna owned the John Hanna & Sons Paving Company or it could be construction company. The business office was on 5th Street as I remember and the shop and garages were in Chester somewhere.
My Great Grandfather started the business in the 1880's near his home on Rose and Upland Street. He arrived from Ireland around 1868 to join his friend, Daniel McCurdy, who was already established in Chester. He later married Daniel's sister, Charlotte McCurdy, also from Ireland.
John and Charlotte's daughter, Belle, married Samuel Bell, who was a prominent Realtor and investor. Samuel and Belle Bell were the parents of
Clarence Bell, the Senator from Chester who just died within the past few years. I hope I have the generations correct. Young Clarence Bell is a practicing attorney in Media if you need any more info.
The three generations of general contractors did a lot of work for the Shipyard,
Scott Paper Company, city streets, parking lots, Sun Oil Company and
PMC/Widener University.
The barn where my GREAT GRANDFATHER kept his horses for pulling the equipment, has just been torn down over the past 7 years. My Grandmother, Laura Blanche Erskine Hanna, was active in the
Chester Day Nursery until her death 1953."
