St. James Catholic League High School Championship Game

June 13, 1971

Notes: This photo was taken at Veteran's Stadium in Philadelphia, prior to the Philadelphia Catholic League high school baseball championship game on June 13, 1971. St. James and Father Judge high school in Philadelphia played to a 3-3 tie in a game halted after eight innings because of a pre-arranged time limit necessitated by that afternoon's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres.

Members of the St. James team pictured are (from left to right): Fran McKinney, Barry Harner, David Long (manager), Dave Kasarsky, Joe Smagala (manager), Art Grenier (manager) and Frank Perko.

An interesting footnote to that game: Father Judge, as the designated home team, shared the dugout with the Phillies players, one of whom was Larry Bowa (now the manager of the Phillies). Father Judge's pitcher that Sunday, Joe Kerrigan, went on to pitch, coach and manage in the major leagues, and is currently the Phillies pitching coach under --- you guessed it --- manager Larry Bowa.

When the tie game was replayed two days later, St. James beat Father Judge by an 8-3 score at Lincoln High School field in Philadelphia. The Bulldogs went on to defeat Roxborough High School, 5-1, at Temple University's Erny Field in the Philadelphia City Championship game on June 17th.
