Andrew Joseph "Sonny" DeVito, 65, of Chester, a former employee of A.J. Schmidt Co., died April 6 at Crozer Chester Medical Center.

Born and reared in Chester, Mr. DeVito was a Chester High School graduate and lived in the city all of his life.

He was employed as a sheet metal mechanic by A.J. Schmidt for 20 years before his retirement in 1974. He was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

A lifelong member of Felton Fire Co. of Chester, Mr. DeVito also belonged to Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Byzantine Ukrainian. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Coral Sea and was the recipient of the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the European Clasp Medal, and the National Defense Medal.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Joan Marguerite Schane DeVito, a daughter, Carmella R. DeVito of Marcus Hook, three sons, Andrew A. DeVito of Virginia, and Dominick S. DeVito and David G. DeVito, both of Chester; two brothers, Dominick DeVito of Brookhaven and Louis DeVito of Ridley Park, two sisters, Ester Bradford of New Jersey and Nancy Long of Chester, and five grandchildren.

The funeral and calling hours begin at 7:45 a.m. Thursday at the Kaniefski Kendus D'Anjolell Funeral Home, 3900 W 9th St., Trainer. The funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Byzantine Ukrainian, 3015 W 3rd St., Chester. Burial will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Lower Chichester.

There also will be calling hours after 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Notes: Mr. DeVito was born 2/22/1931.
