Text of Obituary: William H. "Bobo" Swanson III, 60, of Chester, a Chester Water Authority employee, died Jan. 3 at his home after a long illness.
Born in Chester, Mr. Swanson lived in the city all his life. A 1949 Chester High School graduate, Mr. Swanson first worked for the old Ford Motor Co. in Chester until the plant closed in 1961. That year he became employed by the water authority and had been there since then.
An honorary member of Franklin Fire Co., Mr. Swanson was active as a trustee. A basketball coach with the Chester Biddy League, Mr. Swanson also belonged to the Lloyd AC football team and played on that club's championship softball team. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Son of William H. Swanson Jr., who died in 1981, he is survived by his wife, Hope Meekins Swanson; his mother, Carmella Scarpato Swanson of Chester; two sons, William H. Swanson IV and Matthew J. Swanson, both of Chester; a daughter, Donna Marie Shiarra of Woodlyn; three brothers, John and Donald Swanson, both of Chester, and Matthew Swanson of Folsom; a sister, Diana Billinger of Parkside; and nine grandchildren.
He also was the father of Donald P. Swanson, who died in 1976, and the brother of Bernard P. Swanson, who died in 1979.
The funeral will be 9 a.m. Monday at Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Chester. Burial will be in Immaculate Heart Cemetery, Upper Chichester. Calling will be after 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
