Patrick "Pat" Elia, 79, of Brookhaven, a World Ward II hero, died July 15 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
Born in Poland, Pa., Mr. Elia resided in Chester until 1950 when he moved to Brookhaven, where he had lived ever since.
Mr. Elia was educated in the Chester schools. He owned and opeerated Elia's Variety Stores in both Brookhaven and Aston for more than 20 years. Mr. Elia was later employed by Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester.
Mr. Elia was a former member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Chester, and was a member of Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, Brookhaven, at the time of his death.
Mr. Elia was also active in the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council 3976 of Brookhaven, and was a fourth-degree member of the Cardinal Dougherty Assembly.
Mr. Elia served as an Army technical sergeant during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honored with the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and a European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars.
Surviving are his wife Margaret Petrilli Elia; one daughter Patty DeLuca of Drexel Hill; one son, Joseph Elia; two sisters, Teresa D'Iorio of Wilmington, Del., and Rose Chernokal of Aston, and two grandchildren. Mr. Elia was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Rose Vona Elia. He was a brother to the late Frank, Joseph and Sam Elia, and Lena Jones.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, 231 Upland Road, Brookhaven. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday and again from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester.
Burial is in St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Chester Heights.
Notes: Mr. Elia was born 10/4/1918. He was a member of Franklin Fire Company.
