Text of Obituary: OLD RESIDENT DIES
Lewis Williamson, father of Mrs. John Watson of 209 West Fourth Street, died at his home late Tuesday evening. The funeral will be held from the home of his son William Williamson in Upland. He was in his sixty-seventh year and has been a resident of Chester practically all his life.
Notes: He was a bartender in his twenties in Chester, however his primary profession was machinist at Roach's Shipyard. Roach's Shipyard was founded in 1859 in Chester. Operated by John Roach and Sons, the shipyard specialized in the repairing and building of various ships including: passenger ferry boats, man o'wars, monitors, patrol boats, steamships, and colliers. From 1872 to 1881 the shipyard manufactured 67 vessels, and employed a staff of 1,900 people. Roach's Shipyard was commissioned to build two vessels for Alexandre & Sons, The City of Washington in 1877 and The City of Alexandria in 1879. (Roach's Shipyard Register of Contracts).
Lewis and his family lived in Chester from 1880 to at least 1886. Their children, all born in Chester, were: William (b 1870), Ella (1873), Mary (1874), Lottie (1878), Harry (1880), Emma (1882), and Lewis (1885). Their addresses in Chester were: Montgomery Street (1880), 230 East 3rd Street (1881-3), 321 Franklin Street (1884-6). They eventually moved to Philadelphia. There in the Richmond section (at that time in the 25th Ward), the family rented house at 1861 East Wishart Street where they lived for the 1900 Census. This was a small row house on a poor street. Later, sometime after his wife Mary "Emma" died in 1904, Lewis made his way back to Chester where he lived at 325 Kerlin (in 1908), and 932 Walnut Street (1912). He died in his daughter's home at 209 West 4th Street in Chester. This daughter, Mary, was married to John Watson.
Lewis and Emma are buried at Chester Rural Cemetery, Section SG, Row 40, Grave 001. Found in the Chester City Directory: 1880-1, 1882-3, 1885-6, 1908-9, 1912-13. Lewis's undertaker was EJ Minshall of Chester.
