Text of Obituary: Joseph Huber Vandergrift of Chester, a retired city employee, died May 23 at Crozer Chester Medical Center, Upland.

Born in Media, he attended St. Michael's School in Chester and was a lifelong resident of Chester. Mr. Vandergrift worked for the City of Chester as Superintendent of the Department of Streets for 37 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Wisconsin in the Pacific Theater of Operation.

Mr. Vandergrift was past president of both the Franklin Fire Co. and the West End Boat Club. He was a member of Pennsylvania Firemen's Association and St. Robert's Catholic Church. He was a former Republican Committeeman in the 6th Ward for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Esther Hawn Vandergrift; a brother, Edward Vandergrift of Central, Pa. and formerly of Upland; a sister, Betty Franklin of Chester; and four brothers.

He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth Vandergrift, who died in 1956.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Robert's Catholic Church, Chester. Burial will be in Old Union Methodist Cemetery, Rose Valley. Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester.
