Text of Obituary: 

Joseph E. Haines, 84, of Chester, former superintendent of the municipal sewage treatment plant and a longtime volunteer firefighter and former fire official, died Nov. 20 at Riddle Memorial Hospital, Middletown.

Born in Chester, Mr. Haines lived in the Chester area all of his life. He was employed at the Chester sewage treatment plant for 30 years, retiring in 1975 when the plant became part of the DELCORA sewage treatment system.

A longtime volunteer firefighter in Chester, Mr. Haines was a member of Felton Fire Co. 3 in the West End section of the city. He was a past president of Felton Fire Co. and was a past president of the Chester Volunteer Firemen's Relief Association. Mr. Haines also belonged to the Delaware County Firemen's Association and the Pennsylvania Firemen's Associations. He was a member of the West End Boat Club.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Coppock Haines; two sons, Joseph E. Haines Jr. of Chester and William R. Haines of Indian Springs, Pa.; a daughter, Diane Cicione of Lindenwold, N.J.; five grandchildren and a great grandchild.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Robert Moreland Funeral Home, 9th and Main streets, Trainer. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Providence Avenue and East 20th Street, Chester. Burial will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Lower Chichester. Calling hours are after 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Notes: Mr. Haines was born 7/4/1910.
