John K. McElwee Jr., 70, of Brookhaven, a retired security guard, died March 27 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland.
Son of the late John K. McElwee and Anna G. McCauley McElwee, Mr. McElwee lived in Folsom and in Lenni for 17 years before moving to Brookhaven 19 years ago. He was a security guard with E.J. Burke Security in Philadelphia for 18 years before retiring as a sergeant in 1989. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. McElwee served in the military police and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Guard.
Mr. McElwdd was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and a life member of Lenni Heights Fire Co. 1. He was a former member of the Franklin Fire Co. and Folsom Fire Co., the Chester American Legion Post and VFW Killen-Miles Post in Aston. He was a 38-year Sober Associate Member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He also was an associate member of the American Federation of Police and was a former Eagles football player in 1947 and 1948. He also enjoyed camping.
Surviving are his wife, Julia Jean Huntley McElwee, three sons, John K. McElwee III and Robert J. McElwee, both of Brookhaven, and Peter K. McElwee of Norwood; and a daughter, Kitt McElwee of Springton, Pa.
His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the James F. Knoetgen Funeral Home, 746 Kedron Ave., Ridley Township. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Valley Brooke Road, Chester Heights. Entombment is in Glenwood Memorial Park Mausoleum, Broomall. Calling is from 6:30 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
