John J. McCabe, 85, of Upper Chichester, a retired funeral director with the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, Norwood, died June 5 at Crozer Chester Medical Center, Upland.

Born and raised in Chester, Mr. McCabe was the son of the late John J. McCabe and Mary Dolan McCabe. He lived in Chester nearly all of his life, moving just seven months ago to Upper Chichester from his longtime home at East 16th Street and Washington Avenue in the Sun Hill section of Chester.

He was last employed by the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home until his retirement in 1978. Earlier Mr. McCabe was a funeral director with the old John L. Clancy Funeral Home, on East 9th Street, Chester, for 35 years. He also worked for the Griffith Funeral Chapel, Norwood, for five years.

A member of the former Moyamensing Fire Co., Chester, Mr. McCabe became a volunteer fireman at the age of 16 and devoted much of his early life to fire fighting. He also assisted in driving the fire apparatus. Mr. McCabe was a life member of the Delaware County Firemen's Association and the Firemen's Association of Pennsylvania.

He also belonged to the Delaware County Association of Funeral Directors, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.

A kindly gentleman of the old school who enjoyed his home and his neighbors, he also was fond of boating and fishing and maintained a summer home in Rock Hall, Md., for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Frances Eachus McCabe, two sisters, Mary R. McCabe of Wallingford and Elizabeth Wright of Media, nieces and grandnephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Saviour Catholic Church, Ridge Road, Linwood. Burial will be in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Lower Chichester. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood.
