John Hladasz Jr., 26, of Chester, a captain with the Chester City Fire Department who was dedicated to fire-fighting throughout his life, died Aug. 26 at home.
An assistant chief of the Pennsylvania State Firefighters Association, he belonged to Local 1400 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the labor union that is the bargaining agent for paid firefighters in the Chester Fire Department. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Arson Investigation Association, the Pennsylvania Firefighters Association and the Greater Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
He also was associated with the Parkside and Middletown Fire Companies as a volunteer fireman. At Parkside, he served as an engineer for two years, was the assistant chief for a year and was the engine captain for a year. A very active member of the Parkside Fire Co., he also served on various committees in that volunteer unit.
At Middletown, he was a volunteer firefighter for several years. In addition, he served as an emergency medical technician with ambulance units throughout Delaware County since he was 16 years old. Mr. Hladasz also served as a volunteer with the Moyamensing Junior Fire Co., Chester, for four years.
Born in Ridley Park, Mr. Hladasz was a graduate of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic School in 1984 and of the former St. James High School in 1988 and Delaware County Community College in 1990 with an associate's degree in fire science.
A lifelong resident of Chester, Mr. Hladasz had been a member of the Chester Fire Department for the last eight years and recently was promoted to the rank of captain.
Mr. Hladasz was one of the top 10 runners for fire and ambulance service for several years. He was employed by the professional ambulance service in Wilmington, Del., for two years and also had been employed by the Great Valley Ambulance Service, Paoli, Pa., and the Keystone Ambulance Service, Media.
He played softball with the Liberty Tavern team for several years and played hockey with a fire company group. He enjoyed collecting cars, hunting and fishing, as well as fire fighting memorabilia.
Surviving are his wife of two years, Amy Hladasz of Media; a daughter, Amanda Nicol Hladasz and two sons, Edward and Kyle Hladasz, all of Media; his parents, John Hladasz Sr. and Rita J. Diggins Hladash of Chester; a sister, Mary E. Hladasz of Chester, two brothers, Peter Hladasz II and Daniel (bottom of copy of obituary incomplete)
