Text of Obituary: 

James T. Evans, 84, of Upland, a Delaware County comptroller, died Friday in Wallingford, Nether Providence.

Educated in the Upland School System, he was a lifelong resident of Upland.

A member of the American Legion, Upland Fire Co. and Franklin Fire Co., he retired in 1974 after 15 years as a Delaware County comptroller.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Evans served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was a staff sergeant in the 13th Field Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division.

He was responsible for the control and firing of four 105-mm howitzers and the supervision of the 22-man gun crew. His battalion participated in four combat landings during the "island-hopping" phase of the Pacific operation. Members of his artillery battalion played an integral part in the liberation of the Philippines.

Mr. Evans is survived by a brother, Gilbert Evans of Upland; a sister, Hannah Bell Fraker of Upland, and many nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday at the William S. Bleyler Funeral Home, 500 W. 22nd St., Upland. Interment will be in Chester Rural Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Notes: Mr. Evans was born 11/21/1909.
