George R. Bardsley, 84, of Chester, retired Sun Co. rigger foreman and veteran, died Aug. 2 at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
Born, reared and educated in Chester, Mr. Bardsley had been a city resident his entire life and graduated from Chester High School in 1932. Mr. Bardsley was employed as a rigger foreman at the Sun Co. for 35 years before retiring in 1971. He belonged to Sun's Sapphire Club. Mr. Bardsley served in the U.S. Navy as a seaman from 1932-1936.
Mr. Bardsley was the past commodore of the Harbor North Yacht Club in Chesapeake City, Md. He was a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, the Valley of Philadelphia Chester Lodge No. 236 F&AM, the West End Boat Club, and was a 1ife member of the Faraday Lodge No. 280 Knights of Pythias in Morton. Mr. Bardsley also belonged to the NUR Temple Yacht Club in Wilmington, Del., the R. W. Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Dockside Yacht Club and the Chesapeake Commodores Club in Chesapeake City, Md.
Mr. Bardsley was a member of the Delaware County Fireman's Association and was a life member of the Felton Fire Co. in Chester. He was a lifelong member of the Chester United Methodist Church in Middletown.
Mr. Bardsley was the son of the late Horace Earl and Georgie McKinney Bardsley.
Survivors: Wife of 63 years, Genevieve "Jean" Opalczynski Bardsley; daughters, Florence Hoffman of Glen Mills, Concord, Earlene Drane of Glen Mills; sister, Dora Thompson of Jim Thorpe; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service: 10 a.m. Friday, Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Knights of Pythias service will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and a Masonic service Thursday at 8 p.m.
Burial: Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, Lower Chichester.
Notes: Mr. Bardsley was born 4/22/1915.
