Edward G. Lamey, 83, of Chester, a former volunteer fireman and a retired professional firefighter, died April 26 in Crozer Chester Medical Center, Upland.
Born in Wallingford, Nether Providence, Mr. Lamey lived in Chester most of his life. Previously, he lived in Wallingford, He spent 49 years as a fireman and firefighter in Chester.
Mr. Lamey was a volunteer fireman with the Moyamensing Hook and Ladder Co. and became a paid driver and firefighter. He spent his professional years operating vehicles of the Moyamensing unit.
After years as a volunteer fireman, Mr. Lamey became a paid driver for Moyamensing in 1950. He became a professional firefighter in the Chester Fire Department in 1953. He retired in 1980 with 49 years of volunteer and professional activity in the fire service.
He was one of the founding members of the Garden City Fire Co. in Nether Providence and served as the original chief of the new fire company. All six of his sons have been associated with the fire service in Chester.
At a retirement dinner in 1980, Mr. Lamey recalled that the 1970 fire that destroyed the huge foundry structure of the former Penn Steel Castings Co. as the "worst fire" he ever fought because of the severe February weather.
Firefighters worked in relays because of the intense cold. Spray from hose nozzles covered the firefighters and vehicles with ice. The fire began in the early evening and kept firefighters engaged until the next morning.
He also placed the 1947 fire at the former Southern Pennsylvania Bus Co. as among the worst fires he had encountered. The fire swept through the block long building and destroyed many buses stored in the building.
The fire burned with intensity as it consumed gasoline, oil, paint and other combustibles. There were frequent explosions that endangered the firemen during the major fire that continued into the next day.
Mr. Lamey served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was a member of Local 1400, International Association of Fire Fighters.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Adelaide Riley Lamey; six sons, Edward G. Lamey Jr. of Folsom, Robert Lamey of Swarthmore, William Lamey of Chester, David Lamey and Kevin Lamey, both of ... [copy of obituary incomplete].
