Text of Obituary: Dennis J. Flanagan, 82, of Chester, a retired employee of Sun Oil Co., died May 13 in Crozer Chester Medical Center, Upland.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Flanagan made his home in Linwood for 35 years before moving to Chester in 1947. He was employed as a boilermaker at Sun Oil Co. for 35 years before retirement in 1972.

A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Flanagan served for 11 years. During that time, he was the welterweight boxing champion of the Pacific Fleet. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mr. Flanagan also belonged to the West End Boat Club and the Good Will Fire Co.

A co-founder of Parkside Boys Club, he also was a member of the Sun Oil Honor and Sapphire Clubs and St. Robert's Catholic Church, Chester.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Edythe Benson Flanagan; two sons, Dennis J. Flanagan Jr. of Boothwyn and John L. Flanagan of Wallingford; a daughter, Edythe A. DiNicola of Aston; a sister, Mary Hampton of Cochranville, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ward Funeral Home, 1459 Market St., Linwood. Burial will be in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Lower Chichester. Calling hours are after 7 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
