Text of Obituary: Carl P. Morelli, 8, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., a 40-year veteran of law enforcement work in Delaware and Chester Counties, died Jan. 19 at his home in Florida.
A native of Malvern, Mr. Morelli was the son of the late Sabatino and Angelina Barber Morelli. He came to Chester in 1925, was appointed to the Chester Police Department on Dec. 10, 1941 and was associated with the department until 1969, when he retired as a captain.
During his years with the Chester force, he rose through the ranks, becoming a detective and a sergeant within six months in 1957. He was advanced to captain in the mid-1960s. In 1962, Mr. Morelli was injured when he was hit by a car after arresting two youths in Chester.
Subsequently, Mr. Morelli became chief of police of Parkesburg Borough in Chester County, where he served from 1969 to 1976. He was hired there when the borough faced severe problems with motorcycle gangs, which were resolved during his tenure.
In 1976, Mr. Morelli was designated a lieutenant of deputy sheriffs in Chester County and given responsibility for security of the county courthouse building in West Chester. Retiring from that post in 1982, he left West Chester two years later to make his home in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
A lifetime member and state trustee for two years of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Police, Mr. Morelli also served in various capacities with a number of other law enforcement organizations.
These include the William Penn Lodge 19, Fraternal Order of Police; Delaware County and Chester County Police Chiefs Associations, Southeastern Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Associaton and the Delaware Valley Association of Professional Police Officials.
For more than 20 years, Mr. Morelli served as the grand marshall of the annual Chester Policeman's Ball and was well known for his dancing ability.
Early in his life, Mr. Morelli was employed by the Wolf Paper Company for nine years and by the American Viscose Company for six years.
A community and church activist in the city of Chester for many years, Mr. Morelli served as president of the Franklin Fire Company for five terms beginning in 1964 and remained an active member of the company until he moved to Parkesburg. He also was a member of Delaware County Firemen's Association.
Mr. Morelli was a lifetime member of the Twelfth of October Lodge, Sons of Italy, and was an active member of the Italian-American Club of Greater Clearwater in Florida.
In 1969, Mr. Morelli was admitted to the Columbus Memorial Association's Hall of Fame as a Man of the Year, the same year that the late Dr. Joseph A. DiMedio was honored.
At the same time the Chester Business and Professional Women's Association honored Mr. Morelli for his years of volunteer service to their organization.
From age 12, when he became a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Chester, Mr. Morelli was devoted to church activity. As a young man he even served as a volunteer chauffeur for the late Rev. Msgr. John Zazzara, then pastor of the church.
In addition to participating in all activities of the Holy Name Society and the church ushers, Mr. Morelli also directed all outdoor church processions, arranging traffic control and security of statuary and other church property.
Mr. Morelli also enjoyed cooking and served as a chef for St. Anthony's church picnics, specializing in porkette. He also was active with the Crozer Hospital June Fetes and the Sacred Heart Hospital lawn fairs for many years.
Most recently, he belonged to St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Tarpon Springs.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Edith Y. DiSalvatore Morelli; a daughter, Ann Marie Fizzano of Tarpon Springs; two sons, Carl J. Morelli of Aston and Samuel B. Morelli of Springfield; two sisters, Elsie Rioli and Concetta Nicolini, both of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday from the Nolan-Fidale Funeral Home, 2316 Providence Ave., Chester. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 3rd and Franklin streets, Chester.
