Member of Delco Baseball Hall of Fame
Anthony "Tony" Straccione, 84, of Upper Providence, a well-known local baseball player, died May 2 at Fair Acres Geriatric Center, Middletown.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Straccione was a resident of Chester until 1991 when he moved to Upper Providence. Mr. Straccione was employed by Westinghouse for 33 years until his retirement in 1974. He was previously a bartender at Gambo's, also known as Boyle's.
Nicknamed "Strong Arm Straccione," he was a third baseman who played with a variety of teams including the Lloyd Athletic Club, Westinghouse Local 107, Goodwill Fire Co. and the old Eastern Shore League. As a young man, Mr. Straccione traveled the East Coast and New England with the House of David, frequently playing against the old Negro National League teams. In 1992 he was inducted into the Delco Baseball Hall of Fame. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Straccione was a member of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Media. He was the widower of Eleanor Palmer Straccione who died in 1998 and the brother of the late Rocco Straccione and Louis Straccione.
Survivors: Son with whom he lived, David Straccione; sisters, Emma Ferriola of Turnersville, N.J., Mary Gardner of Aston; five grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren.
Mass 11 a.m. Monday, Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 30 E. Franklin St., Media.
Burial: Private.
Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Monday, Minshall-Shropshire Funeral Home, Middletown and Knowlton Roads, Middletown.
