Our back yard faced the Pennsylvania Railroad and Troop Trains filled with men going off to WWII. They would wave to us kids and we'd wave back. Also trains carrying jeeps, tanks and trucks. Then one train came by with a large Japanese Flag draped on it and you could see how dirty it was. That was one sight I'll always remember. Also the convoys that would come up Highland Avenue. We would sit on the corner just waving to these men. Bob Burger mentioned the planes he had seen. Once when we were at Sun Oil Pool (don't remember the year) planes came over, but these were all different sizes and shapes. Two I remember were shaped like a V. I believe this took place after the war and there were so many, the sky was just covered with them, as far as you could see. I remember passing Ford Motor and seeing all the tanks, trucks and jeeps lined up. Also the ration stamps we had to use and yes, breaking the capsule and mixing oleo in the bag. I can see my mom and a lot of other ladies in Spears, in line, trying to buy nylon stockings. Those were the days, sad and happy, good and bad but we lived through them, our memories.

I didn't live in Chester until after WWII, but I do remember the Troop truck trains on route to destination Korea traveling on Second Street and going up Highland Avenue carrying young boys. I can remember people standing on the curbs handing the young men smokes, sodas, candy bars, money, anything to make the trip easier. WWII was still fresh in the minds of these people. Some of the girls were handing out papers with their address on for them to write. The troop trucks moved very slowly and it seemed to me as a kid that these boys reaching out their hands to touch the people that offered them their hands were so young.

I can remember as far back as 4 years old and my dad in uniform at a train station with high pillars. (now I know it was 30th street station) I can remember him hugging my Mom, sister and our new born brother as he went to board a train that was filled with men in uniform I can remember that he was much older than many of the young men that were boarding the train. Tears, So many tears on all the woman and many of the old men. I remember having black shades on the windows and a small flag hanging in the window. That Grandpop Hutchinson was Air Raid Warden, always wearing his wardens hat and would check the neighborhood and make sure that those woman who had husbands in the service were not frightened at the sirens and would make sure that all shades were down after a certain hour of the night. I remember we did not live in one of the housing projects that were constructed for the families of service people, we lived in a regular house in the suburbs, The homes in the Service projects were small one floor houses with cellars that had coal bins, what a fun place to play and get dirty. Many service wives lived in these houses, as the rent was reasonable I suppose.and because they would be close to family members. The one I remember was at the foot of 420 and the Industrial Highway in Essington. Navy wives lived in ones just over the Pennrose Ferry bridge (Now the Platt bridge).

I remember my Mom going to work at the shipyard in Chester with her beautiful auburn hair tied up in a scarf. Coming home tired, but never to tired to make dinner, do the work around the house or play with her children -- she never drove, so had to walk to the Chesters Bus depot to catch the bus out of town.. In those days the woman went to work to replace and save their husbands jobs, I don’t know that all servicemen came back to the jobs they had. My most vivid memory is of my Dad coming home and being very sick with Malaria. War gives us many memories some happy, many sad.

Who could forget Oleo.

Just re-read Bob Burger's post re the date of his grandparents' accident - so, I was 9 at the time - not 6 or 7. So Bob was probably 11 or 12?

I see several posts concerning Potter Street. I also was born on Potter Street at 1106 in 1932, Jan. 1, and according to my birth certificate I was the first baby born in the city that year; don't know about the state. I also thank the person who gave us the information on how the street got its name. If I'm not mistaken, I believe there was an Episcopalian church on one of its corners - a very beautiful structure. They don't construct buildings like that anymore. Potter Street must have been the birthing street (just kidding), but in the early 30's most babies were born at home, I believe. When I had my tonsils removed at the old Crozier Hospital (I remember being there a few days), my dad told me the bill totalled $5.00. Times have sure changed.

I also remember quite vividly, Bob, the day your grandparents were in that accident that took both their lives. As I told you before, your Uncle Bob Burger and I walked along 9th Street and my heart went out to him for the loss of his parents. I asked him (I was only 6 or 7) what he was going to do and he said he didn't know. Your family took him in and according to what you told me, he turned out to be a wonderful, strong and generous individual. I never forgot that day and I was sorry to hear of his demise - but he turned out so well and had a good life. He was a "tough kid" (looked like the tough kid in the old Our Gang Comedies) and it was that gentle toughness that served him well throughout his life. I am very grateful to you for filling me in on him, because all through the years, I thought about him - and that's a long time now.

Barbara, I also remember that at the end of the war while I was attending Larkin School the teachers took all of the students out to the play ground because approx 50 US Army Air Corps Bombers were flying over on their return to the states. We were all shouting and waving at them as though they could see and hear us.. I have never seen such a display of air power ever since and that includes my 12 years in the Air Force!

Bob Burger, thanks for remembering the end of WWII. There for awhile, I thought I was the only "old timer" around. It's interesting to read about Potter St. Every once in a while, I take a ride down to W 6th Street, near Highland Avenue just to see the house where we lived growing up and it really looks nice. The people who have it now really are taking care of it. 6th Street still looks good but when you go down to 3rd Street, it's so sad! Looks like a war zone now. But the memories are there. What realy stands out is the memory of Stress Hardware on the corner, across from the West End Bowling Alley. Right next to Stress was the Korenkewicz houses. They were beautiful to a young kid back then. The houses were so well kept! But they were torn down some time ago. The West End was really a nice place to grow up.

Although I did go to the Wm. Penn playground and enjoyed every minute of it, I think you are a little younger than I. The playground was like a "babysitter" for our generation. We were there all day long. We went home for lunch and dinner. We opened up the place and closed it. I really enjoyed playing hockey. We did live in Highland Gardens, right on Highland Avenue, directly across from Wm. Penn School. Possibly you are thinking of my youngest sister Becky who is a true red-head. Her and my brother Jimmy looks like twins. They are covered with freckles, too. It's not that I wouldn't have given you something to drink, I think I would have remembered it. Maybe I'm wrong. What year did you graduate from high school? I graduated from Notre Dame in 1969 but I still feel I'm older than you. Let me know...Marie

Marie Borcky, Thanks for the info. I knew Jim was your brother. I also remember you from the Wm. Penn playgroud. I walked you home one time and you gave me a drink of lemonade. I never forgot that. I was probably about 10. You had (have) red hair, is that correct? How's that for a memory,, Do you remember a blind girl that use to be on the swing all the time? She lived in the Gardens, too. I never forgot her she would be on that swing all day long.

I also remember the end of WWII. It was just as you said a parade of mostly cars and cheering people. My father (who was wounded in France was home on leave at the time and he was there with the other servicemen cheering and crying at the same time. One other parade I do recell on 3rd st was just after the beginning of the war they had a guy dressed as Hitler and he was pelted with so many tomatoes and eggs they had to take the poor guy out of the parade. That was around 1942 or 43..

I have both fond and sad memories of Potter St. as we were living at 711 Potter St when my brother Fred and I were born and my Grandparents lived just up the street from us at 727 when they were both killed in an auto accident in Chester at 9th and Central Nov.. 27th 1941. A good friend of mine Don Chandler also lived at 711 Potter. He resided in Chester all of his life until hes passing away about 7 yrs ago. I love this sight as it brings back many fond memories since I left Chester in 1953!!

Marylou, like John I enjoyed your story. from a different part of town, your story a reminder of something we did on one mischief night. A friend had a crush on a little kid (maybe 11 years old) in the area. So we collected all the leaves in the neighborhood and targeted that house. Piled them high on the porch in front of the door. Waited and waited for the door to open. Finally it did. One of the parents came out for a smoke. Lucky for us that he did not toss the butt or match into the leaves.

Lucky for you no one slipped on the acorns. Stories we love to tell others but not the kids of the family. It is amazing that some of us lived to tell such wonderful memories.

Fall Memories / Great acorn Caper cont. With the barrel placed in my back yard, we now had a secure place to store our acorns. We started our collection, we took a paper bag to school with us and on the way home we would fill them. We would rush home change our school clothes and go right back and collect till dinner time. we spent the whole month of october on the 1100 block of Curry street. By mischief night we had afull barrel. Armed with a bar of soap and our bags of acorns we set out to do our mischief. We ran up to porches and emptied shopping bags full of acorns on to them. We threw handfulls of acorns on others. Before the night was over there wasn't a porch in a four square block that didn't have acorns on it. Even the enclosed ones, we would sneak open the door andthrow them and then run like the devil. We weere sure no one saw us. Some people wouldd come out after the initial attack , but we hid behind cars on the street. Because we had to run back to my yard and refil our bags , it took all night to empty the barrel. We never even got to soap any windows. All that work and planning over in a few hours, But it was fun! The next night Halloween , we laughed everytime we would come to a porch that still had acorns on it. We trick or treated every house , we knew they didn't know who threw the acorns. We hid to well, nobody saw us. So we collected all our candy with complete confidence. When we got home and emptied our bags, much to our surprise we had several treat bags with acorns in them! We never knew who gave them to us and as kids couldn't figure out how they knew it was us. As i got older I relised , the people on the 1100 block saw us everyday collecting acorns . Also the only two porches that didn't get hit by acorns happen to be ours. After all we figured we would have to clean them up if we did . So tha that Halloween we really did get Trick or TReats!

I always look at this site but I have not posted anything in a long time. But I have a few comments to some of the people that have posted. Underwood-you mentioned alot of stories that I have heard about from my Mom. She used to go to the T-Bar back in the day & she also lived near the Mattera's. Her name is Catherine (Harper) Lyons. Her sisters used to go there also, Lorraine Harper & Pat Harper--maybe you remember them. You brought back alot of good old bar stories. Thanks.

Shamburger-I am 40 yrs old and grew up on 18th & Providence.I enjoy reading about all of these old Chester memories. They are great even if they are about bars. I have my own stories about Rick's, The Liberty Tavern & the RS club. What is life without memories. They are wonderful. Thanks.

Potter St-whoever asked about Potter st--My great-grandfather lived at 18th & Potter on the corner. His name was James Taylor. He was wonderful. I have alot of great memories going to PMC with him & just talking about his younger days. Some people just have to listen & read. No comments are neccessary.

Thanks for the memories to everyone who posts. I really enjoy them. They bring back all of "The good old days."

Actually,

The group was called Reminisce (named by me) however the oringal group that you may have seen at McGinns consisted of myself, Bill Kelsey, Joe Cucchi, and Joe Fiorelli. We sang at different bars in the area. Then I compiled at tape of our practice songs and sent it in to the Charlie Horner Show on WXPN (Penn Univ.). Charlie called me the following saturday and asked if he could air our tape on his show. I remember because I was living on Lehman Street at the time. We agreed to let the tape play. Within one hour of the airing we were booked at the Little Borse Cafe @ 3rd and Chestnut Street for our first bout with the Philadelphia groups. Foundation, Neighbors Complaint, New Emage and many more great acappella groups. We sang as far away as New York City and have had our songs recorded both in Brooklyn New York and Lima Pa. for Starlight Records from Statten Island. Starlight is strictly hard core acappella. I hope this helps out. Thanks for remembering. We broke up and I sang with other acappella groups such as Flipsides, and Street Dreams. By the way, Reminisce still records and are able to perform. I see the guys two or three times a year. The existing group consists of Bill Kelsey-Chester PA. (Lead, 1st/2nd, Falsetto), John Palony-South Philadelphia (Lead, 1st/2nd), Ken Luttrell-Warminster Pa. (Lead, 1st/Falsetto), Jim Borcky Chester, Pa. (Lead, Baritone/2nd/Bass), and Walter Blake-Warminster Pa. (Lead/Bass). Thanks again for remembering.

Jimmy Borcky's group was called Reminisce. I think that's how it's spelled. I know that because he's my brother. Bill Kelsey was the leader and there was another guy from Philly who sang the deep voice part. His name was Walt. I'll have Jimmy get on-line with you. The group no longer exists. I know for a fact that Jimmy's wife Lynn was their manager for awhile and they had quite a few jobs singing in every bar in Chester. They even sang at the West End Boat Club (when it was a great place to go).....

Does anyone remember the name of the Accapella group? I remember being over Stevie McGinn's house for a party one time and there was a line formed for the bathroom. All of a sudden we all broke out in harmony and started singing while we were waiting. Next thing I know 2 of the guys that were in that line, Jimmy Borcky and the younger brother of Larry Fiorelli got together and formed an Accapella group. They had a pretty good following. What was the name of the group?

Hello: My name is Marilyn N. Lee-Adams and I was a resident of Chester City until 1997 and all of my immediate family still live in Chester. As I was going through the list of Police Officers of our city past and present, the number of Female Officers you listed only totaled four. We have actually had a total of 12-female officers who have made contributions to this profession and to the City of Chester at one time or another. I myself have been an active member of the brotherhood since 1994. With our newest female member with just under two years of service. I would like to assist with any information to give an accurate account of the females that have chosen to help to improve our community.

Respectfully Submitted;

Marilyn N. Lee-Adams C/O "82"

[Editor's note: I have emailed Officer Lee-Adams and thanked her for her offer of additional information. I'll look forward to receiving the list of additional officers and will get them added to our "Police" page as soon as possible. - John]

Mr. Andrews: Thank you for the information on Potter Street. It is interesting how streets get their names. Because of your post in answer to a question, I went into the What's New section and scrolled down to the GENEALOGY & HISTORY RESOURCES then to the work that Rick Nicholson is documenting for the DelcoHistorical Society clicked on that link then typed in Mr. Potters full name for a search. There are several areas of Mr. Nicholsons research that identify Mr. Potter. Having done that, decided to type in several other street names, and people are documented on that link with those names. Now don't know if the streets were named after them in particular but would assume so. This site is a wealth of historic information. If not on board, visitors seem to know the answers.

Eddie in California. Boy, did you bring back some good memories. Jack Fletchers hoagie shop, 9th & Keystone Rd. Then Vesuvio took over that same place plus Johnson's Drug store. Many a good hoagies I carried out of Fletchers, and Vesuvio's, the best Meast Ball sandwich I can remember, plus good Pizza's & Spagetti. Jasper's News Stand, my first cousin, Jasper Smith. He used to get me to work the News Stand when he had a hot tip at Brandywine track, he was quite a character. Honeysuckle, my mom worked there for years, for John Wolf. I used to hang around there a lot in the 50's. The Gateway Inn, I spent time there when I was a little guy. Used to go in with my pop. Bill Culbreth was on the piano & Mike Coine was behind the bar. Used to go there a little later on when the Pollacks owned it. Ronnie & his dad. Good memories..Thanks, Mike..

All these Holloween stories brought back a memory of mischeif night. I used to have this fake leather jacket years ago. I was wearing it one time and someone happened to whack me across the back with a clothes line, just messing around, and it didn't hurt at all. It seemed that the jacket absorbed the impact. Well then I had one of the guys hit me as hard as they could with their belt and I didn't feel a thing. So, the mischief night prank was set. I wore the jacket and had a bunch of guys beating me with belts across the jacket as I lay on the street howling and covering up. Every car and bus that came along saw me getting attacked by a bunch of kids stopped and started chasing them away. I remember the bus driver stopping his bus that was full of people. They were all looking and were ready to get off and help, too. I would get up laughing and take off also. We got so many people on that one. I still laugh about it till this day. Man, some of the stuff we did.

As far as all the bar talk goes. I love it. It was one of the best places to meet and greet friends. Too, bad you can't do that today. It's to easy to get locked up.

Wasn't sure whether to finish my on going story about Fall memories after the current posting but I was always taught to finish what you start so .....Fall memories or the great acorn caper cont. We are on our way to get our storage barrel for our acorns for Mischief Night. Crossing MOrton Ave from Pappy Johnsons,Morton was such a big busy street to us back then. Up Sun Drive to the rail road treslethat crossed Ridley Creek. To get to the tracks we had to be in "Sun Hill" territory. So if the infamous Sun Hill holigans didn"t get us ,we were sure the train would come while we were on the tresle. If we did make it , we were then in the little area between the creek and the Chester pike Drive-in, tha area was called Nazi Hill. Don't knopw why. Lucky for us all our worry and fear was for nothing, we made it with out a scratch, Walked along the tracks pass the back of the drive-in, bowling alley, and St. Rose of Lima church crossed over bullens lane and we were there. No fence around the plant, so we just crawled up as close as we could to the loading docks. There wer barrels everywhere. Since it was Satureday morning nobody seemed to be around. We found one and started back the way we came. Now these barrels had no handels and as i said were made of carboard. The barrel was as big as we were. All our great planning we had never figured on how to carry this thing-especilly thru the forbidden zones we had to travel. We started with one in the front and one of us in the back, carrying it side ways between us. Butwith the lid on and the smooth bottom we had nothing to grip on to. After a short distance we had to stop- our arms about to fall off. We tryed rolling it along the tracks but it was getting beat up and we thought the cardboard would get holes in it . Next we took the lid off a nd one of us carried the lid , while the other walked with the barrel over their head. After what seemed like hours we stopped and ate or packed lunches. We hadn't even got as far as the bowling alley. It looked like we would be missing the matinee at the Mac Movies. We were really disapointed it was a monster movie Frankenstein in black and white which we had seen many times. But every time we saw it - it was scary! I can't remember all the ways we carried that barrel but there were many. We managed to get it homeall in one piece. We never saw the holigans from the hills and come to think of it , I never saw roving groups of holigans the whole time i lived in Sun Village. But every kid in the neighborhood knew about them. It was passed down from one generation to the other. I think it was what you call an Urban legend. Maybe started by parents to keep kids off the railroad tracks. Final chapter to come "mischief NIght"

Carol,

Wow.....okay, now I'm trying to get this straight. You babysat for Bill Trush's kids? ( Billy, Arlene and Joan?) Bill and his wife Joan remain steadfast friends of the family. I would love to hear more about the store. I have vague memories of it being talked about. Francis? My Uncle Frank (he and my dad and my Aunt Virgie, the three babies of the family all died within a year of each other about 5 years ago) If you knew him then you knew one of the best people I ever knew. I have little memory of McIlvan St. My grandparents died before mom and dad married ( in the 40's) so I don't have any memories of them, but vaguely remember the house. 700 block. Tried to find it two weeks ago when I was up there, but no luck. Family stories include that the Polish American Club met in that house when it was first established. Have to check with my cousins. Anyway Uncle Frank also had a son named Frances, who is a retired Deware State Trooper. Great to make a connnection with you. Mr Trush was always one of my favorite people. He was at every wedding, every graduation party, and we often spent new year's eve at his house. Great memories!

Is anyone out there old enough to remember the parade on W 3rd St when WW2 was over? The parade was mostly cars full of people just cheering and cheering. I remember the church bells ringing and all the people were so happy.I was only a kid of about 10 and it was sure something to see.

I saw Ted at the game yesterday. I would like to have gotten the chance to tell him I was from Chester too, good to see a local guy making good. Some dude from Chester was on the field to win a prize if he caught three passes from the Eagles mascot, he dropped all three passes, got booed, might even had a beer spilled on him

Ms. McF..seems to enjoy conversation with depth. In stirring up the pot, she brought out some interesting posts about the bars in the area. Not just the name, but happenings in a general manner. When thinking of the T Bar, one would not remember it without thinking of Tony Mattera greeting everyone that came in the door or Johnny the bartender. One would remember the Sunday afternoon Jam sessions that were held there. One would remember Mary Mattera and the cellar. Good eating at that place. The "T" bar was a place where people would go to hear the local bands that Tony would bring in as did other bar owners. . Many musicians did the rounds of the local bars that featured entertainment. That meant they worked. A very good thing. So in reading the now infamous post, I do believe that the posts have been more detailed and interesting, could that have been the whole point.

It was interesting to read about Duke Snow and find that a recent article was written in the Chester/Delco times. So visited there. Now a well known artist in his own right. So Andrew W. is not the only well-known artist in the area surrounding Chester.

a Halloween memory is having one of those rattles that would spin around on the handle and make a cranking sound. Decorated in Orange and Black with a smiling Witch painted on it.

Could someone help me out with the information posted about Emile Bucher Photographer under the Business link to the left? It states Edgemont Avenue and has (8) after the name Bucher. Does this relate to whomever gave the info? I have an old photo with Emile E Bucher located on Market Street. Was wondering what timeframe this may be from.

Happy Halloween to all. I liked dressing up and getting hot cider and candied apples from the neighbors. Something you didn't worry about the 50's and 60's !!

Back in the day, lets say the 50's, who gave the best Halloween Treat on the Street..What were some of the homemade costumes you wore. I can remember one guy being half man half woman and wearing gold scouring pads, the type that were curly when unraveled sewed to what was probably a bra he borrowed from his mom. Then there was one that was the hunchback ...that one scared the living gibbers out of this then small kid. Seems everyone ended up on third street where the store around the lyric movie.

Been a minute since I've posted. I still read the comments and laugh though. And again, I must say "play nice"! I have enjoyed the memories of you guys reflecting on your "spots". I can remember the hangouts of my family and their spots. They would always have great stories of how they had a great time dancing and partying. They were not shooting and stabbing stories. They were stories of good music, good people and fun!

I listened to my uncles and mom when they talked about the shows and stars who once freqented this town. I remember the Star Dust and the stories of the Pink Elephant. And yep, I know all about the "taverns and bars" in all areas as I have stories from all walks of life about Chester and the Irish, Polish, Italians, And Ukes. I have laughed at many, and learned a lot as well. I have never considered these story tellers drunks or alkies. Going to a tavern was like going to a Barber Shop on Saturday morning. The old timers would talk and try to out remember the other. So, when and while I am reading the recollections of your favorite spots reminds me of the tales I have heard over the years.

We have many memories true, we have many opinions (differ), true. But I see one conclusion in all of these stories. It makes all of you feel good and you love trying to recapture yesterday! And there is nothing wrong with trying to find a friend or two.

I love "GOOD OLE JOE'S" response. I don't want to get into a shouting match because it would just back and forth and of course that is not what the site is for. For many of us, history of Chester did not begin until the 60's and 70's. I am "only" 47 (oops did I say that?) well yeah, and I think most times I don't hold a candle to the memories posted on this site. That's because the history of Chester was before my time. And when I read those eras, I am learning. My era unfortunately was the dwindling of Chester. But before it dwindle, as you have read on my past postings, I have great memories. But, I do so enjoy the happy and not so happy memories of others.

SOOOOOOOO, PLAY NICE! EMBRACE THE DAY!!!

Terry Owsiany, Yes, that's the Billy Trush I am talking about. I use to babysit his children when I was in high school. I remember the Owsiany family name well. I knew a Francis Owsiany. Probably a relative of yours. Also remember the Zachorchemny Family (not sure about that spelling of their last name). I lived in the 600 Block of McIlvain Street, close to the railroad tracks. Was born and raised in that house. I have great memories of growing up in the east end of Chester. Since Halloween is right upon us, do you recall how great it was trick or treating back then?? What fun I had with my friends going from house to house ALL OVER THE PLACE ! It sure was a blast. Nothing compares to the Halloween of days gone by.

I'm an older 'guy' from the class of '53 era, and I agree with all you younger guys and gals, write what you will, the memories always seem to trigger a long lost memory of mine. Some people have no memories of their own and feed off what they believe is history, well that's ok too. We need diversification, different ideas, so....keep those memories coming in no matter which category you represent. I truly enjoy all that all of you have to say... "Good Ole Joe" said that....

Isn't it interesting that there are so many of us in our Vintage years using and knowing so much about the computer. It seems those of you that attended the schools in Chester had a foundation that carried you to many different careers and directions With this in mind and seeing so many people adding CHS to their names, I wondered if you knew that it cost $175,000.00 to complete Chester High School. It was built with a granite stone edifice.. That as early as 1914 there was a night school for young men and women who because of circumstances had to leave school to work at an early age. This gave them the opportunity to complete some higher education.

The education system in the early 1900's offered not only public schools, but also Catholic parochial schools, and several private schools in the area. Pennsylvania Military College, Crozer Theological Seminary, Swarthmore College, Sleeper's College and sever other institutions of learning. Chester had so much to offer the people with not only work, but educations for the adults and their children.

Have you seen the 2004 calendar? I think the picture of the Chester-Bridgeport Ferry is really good. Alot of memories waiting for the Ferry to bring you back to Chester and being bitten alive by the Jersey mosquitos. The picture of Weinbergs at Christmas was very good too. When you walked in those doors you knew you were in a very expensive department store and well out of your range.Back then ten or twenty dollars was a lot of money, but we were rich in many other ways. What a good way to help out John and Old Chester Pa is to do some shopping at the Emporium. Stop in and see what's there. Maybe you could even send a donation to Old Chester Pa and you know the donation is tax deductable. John would really appreciate your help and your help would keep Old Chester Pa going and our memories too.

Pidipat--You're doing it again. You can't be the warden of people's memories. These people aren't attacking or criticizing anyone. Why do you feel obligated to be critcal of them? A long time ago I defended you and sent supportive e-mail to you when you were under attack. Now, to steal part of a thought from Pogo. "I have met the enemy and he is" you. Take an objective look at what you are writing. It reads alot like your critics. People's memories of events, places, and people are as many and as different as are the people having them. Who is to judge whose's are better than another's. Your comments will just bring back the nasty personal attacks that you have inspired in the past. It is much easier to just skip over postings that are not of interest to you. I've exausted my interest in this matter and I'll follow my own advise and skip over to the wide range of memories expressed on this site.

Rudy Pompilli was from Chester and made a name for himself playing his sax with Bill Haley & the Comets. He was known world wide and I was proud to have known him and him being from Chester Are you Mr. McFadden, saying he should not be talked about, that his music should not be talked about or that he should not be talked about because he played at the Nite Cap?Rudy was a beautiful man, a man from Chester. He and his wife Ann lived in Chester. Duke Snow is well known for his music and also for his beautiful paintings. Ed Gebhart just wrote a story on him in the Daily Times. Yes we who knew them, maybe as a fan or maybe on a personal level also enjoyed the music and their performance. This in no way degrades John Bullock or Old Chester Pa and John Bullock is a fantastic man. Thanks to him we can express our memories.

I don't think the people making these postings are trying to push alcohol. They are remembering places they went and the friends they hung out with. People they remember being there with them. I haven't thought of these places in years. But these postings brought back many memories of where these places were. I grew up in the east end of Chester. I remember two such places, Richle's Bar on 7th and McIlvain St. and Larkin House on 7th and Potter St. I can remember my Dad being in Richle's on a Saturday afternoon and letting me come in for a soda. I really thought I was something sitting up at that bar with my Dad. Or my Mom running out of a pack of cigaretts and sending me down to Richle's to get her a pack out of the vending machine. You had to put 30 cents in the machine and you got 2 cents back in between the celephane wrapping and the pack of cigaretts. I got to keep the 2 cents for penny candy. I remember Trush's grocery caddycorner from Richle's. My Mom sent me many a time to the store. And Billy Trush allowed my Mom to have what they called a storebook. It was just a small notebook that he would write in the charges for the purchase my Mom sent me for. Credit ! Many times my Mom said if it wasn't for Billy Trush, we wouldn't have eaten. My Dad was out of work for almost a whole year one time due to an accident and an illness. These are great memories of mine. But these are no less important than the memories that are already posted. We each have our own memories of Chester. What we did, who we hung out with, places we went with our friends. All these memories are important to the person that makes a posting. Don't misjudge or belittle them because alcohol was a part of it. Be glad that they shared their memory. Ah, the good old days. Before I learned to drive and had to ride the bus!

People used to drive in and out of the car park all night long,,just to see who was hanging out there. The hamburgers were the best,,,along with the thick shakes. My mouth is watering now for them. Another thing we don't have down here is Cheese steaks and hogies. I went back to the states in March this year and the first thing I got was a cheese steak,,,,thats the first one I had in about 5 years!!!! I think I must have ate it in 5 minutes. A little over two years ago, when I was contributing to the "history" of our beloved and cherished, and I might add, little-acknowledged Chester, Pennsylvania (one of the small acorns from which a mighty nation grew), the object of this site was to acknowledge in personal stories how we, our parents, their parents and back to the days of William Penn managed to survive the depression, diseases, the wars and life in general.

Obviously, the people (now long gone) did a damn good job of making our city a beloved city and a wonderful, joyous place in which to be born and "grow up" (with little money, I might add). We learned all the basics life has to offer - warmth, love, caring for others - something we took for granted while not realizing others during our time were deprived of all of these. I know that of which I speak because I take the time to talk to others and many people my age (71), never had the privilege of growing up in the caring and loving environment most of us Chesterites had. If this were not so, people would not post comments such as "I loved my childhood; wonderful memories; I will never forget my home town." Also, this is one of the reasons, John Bullock's hometown reunions are successful and cherished by the "old timers".

The reason I bring this up is because the recent posters are using this "memorabilia board" for self-serving purposes. Chester had many taverns (called "beer parlors" in the old days) and my family certainly patronized most of them. However, Chester was not famous for its alcohol consumption. Yet, the taverns seem to be your main topic of conversation lately. Who, in history, really cares who the bartender was, who patronized the bar, who entertained there? If that is your opinion of what life was really like in Chester during your days growing up there, I feel extremely sorry for you and this site. You are doing a great disservice to your ancesters, the history of Chester and complete disrespect for John's wonderful and charitable gift to you.

Few of you post your memories of living conditions, electronics, schooling, your mother's cooking and her recipes, dating, how and where you met your mate, description of your first car, first job, salary at that time, shopping (how shopping changed), the cost of your first home in Delaware County, where your first home was and why you chose that area, how taxes changed and multiplied in Delaware County, etc. etc. What happened and how to the great bus service we used to have? When was it that personal transportation (autos) took over?

There were thousands of changes in Delaware County since my birth (1932); yet none are posted. It appears to me that you're stuck in your own selfish time zone and your lives have been the same since the day you were born - you never noticed one damn change all your life. All you're interested in is if people remember you and your friends. Well, they will remember if you write some history about you and your friends. Otherwise, quite frankly, I'm bored and I feel strongly that many people who just "check in to see what's going on here" are as bored as I am.

NO, I don't remember "Pokey" or "Mokey" and only a few do. Use your email or your favorite chat room for this and stop wasting valuable space; not to mention disrespect for the original intent. And, don't worry if people get upset with your post. I did occasionally, but it didn't make a "quitter" out of me. I'm still here. And I will continue to fight for what I consider just and right.

Does anyone remember the NITE CAP on Chichester Ave?Rudy Pompilli played there and he would walk the bar playing his Sax to the tune of When The Saints Go Marching In. Out the door he would go and everyone would follow him. He'd go up to Mary's Tavern and back again playing the Sax. What a great guy he was! Duke Snow also played there and Ed Gebhart just wrote a story on him in the Daily Times.

Libby, I'll bet the place you can't remember the name of is Hurley's Tavern in Twin Oaks. They used to have a lot of cdountry/western music there. I went there one night and Bill Haley's Comets were playing backup for Little Jimmy Dickens. I worked at Rube's all thru the 60's. He was a good friend. The Polish Eagles at 9th & Elsnore was a nice club to go to. I also worked at the ElRancho for about a year. Did you ever go to the Dinky Club on 2nd st. That was the place to go on Sunday nights. Oh so many neat places to go & have a good time. Anyplace like Chester in the land down under. I'll bet not. Best regards, Mike...

Just wanted to give some feedback on the foods links. I had the opportunity to use "Taste of Philly" last year at Christmas. I sent a cheesesteak down to my uncle in Daytona Beach, Fl. He rated it a A++++++ !!!! The steak came all wrapped in a box with a card included. The cheese and onions were already in the meat packet and he just had to heat it up and put it on the included "Philly" roll. The only complaint I got from him was that it made him hungry for more and he wished I had sent several instead of just one... may be next time!

Played hockey and softball with her and can verify she was a terrific player as well as a really nice human being. She probably would not remember me as I was a year behind her, or maybe she would, as she is that kind of person. Where can I find out who else is in the Hall of Fame? Went to CHS in the mid 50's with Horace Walker and many fine athletes. What a great time to have gone there.

My brother Bill Autro just told me about this web site today and I was very surprised to see all the things in it. Lived in Chester for many years, first behind 3rd Pres. Church and then in Sun Village. Remember walking a long way from Sun Village to CHS, walking to the athletic field for gym and then back again to play hockey and softball. Muscles ached so bad after the first couple of days of hockey practice but we always went back, we just loved the competition. It was such a great school in the mid 50's. Remember going to the spring at Chester Park and swimming there in the creek and playing softball at Deshong Park and going to the store around the corner from the vocational building at CHS for lunch. Did any of us know how great we had it at that time in our lives and how great it was for us to grow up that time in history. We went to Shooster's and to the drive-in and yes to JimmyJohns for hot dogs. You know we drove past there last month while on the way to see youngest son and I told my husband we had gone there as teenagers (many long years ago) and he couldn't believe it was still there. We went to Booth's Corner Farmers Market and it seemed it took us forever to get there. Remember before Rt.95 was built we thought Ogden or Delaware were soo far away. We really lived in a great town and although some of us didn't have a whole lot of money we had a good time. We walked to Smedley and sat on the picnic tables outside to eat lunch and it seems we could walk anywhere just about and we didn't worry about anything happening to us (and we were girls). What a shame the world is not what it was then.

FALL MEMORIES CONT. (AKA KNOWN AS THE GREAT ACORN CAPER) In the early 60's there were no plastic storage containers,I'm not even sure tupperware was around yet. So we couldn't just buy a plastic container or a cheap trash can to store our acorns in. We had metal trash cans and most of our storage was in drawers and cedar chests. We put all our summer clothes away every fall and all our winter clothes away every spring. It was neat because it was like getting all new clothes two times a year. My Mother had run out of room in the cedar chest and had no extra drawers, so she had gone to Virginia Barrel works in Eddystone and got a barrel. It was heavy cardboard with metal rims and bottom and top. Thats what she stored our off season clothes in. I decided that would be a great way to store our acorns. We didn't have money so we would have to "borrow" one. So the next saturday we set out to obtain our barrel. It would mean passing thru some enemy territoy, we couldn't just roll our barrel down Chester Pike! We would have to follow the railroad tracks. This would take us close to Nazi Hill and Sun Hill both dreaded by the neighborhoood kids. We believed roving gangs of holigans occupied both hills. Funny i'm now married to one of those Sun Hill holigans. Early Saturday morning as soon as all our chores were done, we packed our supplies. No fancy backpacks like today, Ihad a small army pack left behind by my older brother. Packed a sanwhich, cookies and band aids(my mom was anurse)ans a flashlight. Don't know why we needed a flashlight. Filled an old canteen with water and met up with my partner in crime. Off we headed with one last stop at Pappy Johnson's gas station to get a soda. Pappy had a coin operated soda machine 10 cents a bottle. This machine was hoizontal, it opened from the top and the soda was hanging between rails of metal. You had to grab your soda and take it to the end of the row and manuver it into a slot on the leftside of the machine. Then you put your dime in and pulled your soda up. You even had to work to get a soda in those days! We were ready now- scared but determined to complete our mission to be cont.

We grew up on the 'wrong side of the tracks' but all got out and did fairly well--4 of the 5 of us at least. The Garden City projects at age 3 is my earliest recollection, then even lower down to the McCaffrey Village projects when dad got TB & had to go away to Reading sanitorium when I was in 8th grade. Tranferrred to REZ from St.Roberts mid-year...we were all accepted there as everyone was poor in that parish, just about. Ist job near the newstand. Some good but many bad memories of life in Chester..always glad I get out and stayed out!

I was so happy (finally) to meet and greet John Bullock. Unfortunately, because of the flu I was not able to enjoy the festivities of the reunion. However, I did see some people from the city that I had not seen in quite sometime. And did get to meet some of the beautiful people who frequent the site. Thank you John for your vision and following it through.

For the many people I spoke with who were at the reunion for a period of time, they were really excited and expressed their gratitude as well. Seeing Wendell (our Mayor) there, Thad (Rep. Kirkland) and so many ministers was a plus as well. I even saw several classmates that I told to visit. There was an article in the Delaware Conty Times on Sunday about the affair, (but I felt it should have been more verbally and picturesque!) AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FRONT PAGE NEWS!!! THIS WAS A POSITIVE THING HAPPENING IN CHESTER ....(OOOH, here lies the problem) but I digress....Back to the positive....It was beautiful and John, you are beautiful too!

Keep up the good work...if the turnouts keep growing like this, well let's just say you will have to change locations...or move it outside! AND THAT AIN'T A BAD THING! (Yes I said ain't!) God bless!!

To the many, many people that came to the reunion I would like to extend my personal thanks. Without you it could not happen. To The Rev. Janet Jenkins Sturdivant, Pastor of Asbury A.M.E. church, your kindness in opening your doors and Welcoming the people that came to your church as friends and not visitors only added to the beautiful person you are. To the members of your congregation thank you and Gods Blessings for assisting your Pastor in helping John Bullock to add another memory for all that attended.

To Mayor Wendell Butler, Jr., Representative Thaddeus Kirkland, Senator Dominic Pileggi each of you spoke of your hometown as the place where a foundation for your future began. Your schedules are demanding, yet you took the time to visit OLDCHESTERPA and you paid tribute to the once thriving City of Chester Your positive focus on a rebirth in Chester makes one believe it will happen.

To all that volunteered their help thank you …to the people that brought pictures, books and other memorabilia to share with us, you kept two of our scanners busy all day. That was great. Greg and Jack really like keeping busy. As you saw the scanning process can take some time. So please be patient, the material that you brought will be indexed, keyed and added to the site as soon as possible.

We must remember that this is only Johns Hobby. Not his full time job. And unfortunately those of us that do volunteer our help in preserving the history of Chester are scattered. It would be much easier if we all lived in NC. Or PA… But alas, some of us love the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, while others the rolling hills of NC. . try as we may, we can’t help in cataloguing and uploading. Its all up to John….

If you were tired when you left the reunion, I am sure it was a good feeling of tired. . But John, our webmaster is amazing. He was still going long after most of us were sleeping. He has met challenges that would have swayed others from continuing… yet works tirelessly in collecting and sharing the information that he obtains. To John, when you finally get home sometime this week, rest up when you get there. Two days should do it for yea. Will be looking forward to the WHATS NEW section. I was lucky enough to see some of the treasures people were sharing. Can't wait to see them on the site. Have a safe trip home..

For those of you that could not be there, God willing, will see you next year.

Mark your Calendar for: Saturday October 2, 2004 …Noon – 4PM at he Salvation Army Chester Corps, 151 West 15th St. Chester, PA. thanks to Captains Tim & Evelyn Clark.

MY MOTHER AND FATHER WERE FROM CHESTER AND I ALSO WAS BORN THERE. MY FATHER WAS WILLIAM "RIP" FARRADAY AND HE LIVED ON LAMOKIN STREET AND MY MOTHER WAS ANNA MARY ALBERTINI AND SHE LIVED ON THRID AND BROMMAL STREET. I HAVE SOME MEMORIES OF THE HOUSE ON THRID AND BROMMAL AND I REMEMBER A PLACE CALLED WISE OWLS AND THE LADY AROUND THE CORNER FROM US THAT SOLD FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM SOMEBODY. LOVE THE WEBSITE|

Another historic mark for the City of Chester will take place when folks gather for the 3rd annual reunion of the oldchesterpa.com web site.

John has worked very hard to make the website and this affair a success. I am looking forward to seeing all my old friends and my newer friends from Chester Park at this Historic Event.

And may I remind those who are able that the Salvation Army could use a helping hand as indicated in John's recent update.

I have worked closely with John over the years that the site has been available. I do not think most folks have any concept of the time and effort he puts into this project, and he continues to try to improve the site despite what a few "spoilers" have tried to do.

"The reward for a job well done is to have done it." Best wishes to John and Oldchesterpa.com website on this occasion..

Here's a fall memory from Chester. I'll probably tell it in installments since it was a whole month in the making. It was the fall of 1961, the trees on the 1100 block of Curry street had started to change colors and drop thier acorns. These tree were huge Oaks probabley close to 75 years old, so the dropped a ton of acorns. I started thinking about Mischief night and how we never had enough of dried corn to really make a mess on sombodys porch. I thought we could collect acorns and really have some impact since there seemed to be an endless supply of them. So the great acorn plan was hatched. I enlisted my usual partner in crime, Linda Caffo and we started to pick up acorns after school. After the first week of collections we had several paper shopping bags full. We stored them in my back yard. Then it rained and all the bags broke. My Mother had a fit . She cleaned them up and threw them across the street in the feild. I thought of a way we could keep them dry and safe. It would take a lot of planning and all of our next Saturday morning to secure a dry safe place to keep our amunition. to be cont.
