Just a correction to the posting, it was Mayrene Groton and she was buried today. Her husband was Page Groton who worked at Sun Ship and then for the boilermakers union in Washington. She was a great person. Another sad passing of a second ward resident. Also Ben Walls of second ward passed away last week.

It is so much fun looking back& remembering when I was a kid in Chester. I remember going to Riverview Park on the Wilson Line for the day. Lots of rides and we would take a picnic lunch. I remember Cooly Lilly on Welsh St., I liked going in there. My Mom liked to go to Chester Candy Kitchen on Market St. I also remember the A&W Root Beer Stand on 9th and Morton Ave. I also remember the Boyd Theatre on 8th and Welsh , The Eddy theater on Edgmont Ave. The Grand Theater on 3rd and Market. Do you remember them?

Sad to say that Mayrene Groggin passed away. She was the sister of Harry (HiBall) Williams. There were four siblings and now they are gone.

The name "Frank Upton" brought back memories of Smedley JHS in the late '40s

Hard to believe Carl passed away in September of 1985. Have you saved alot of obits over the years?

I will never forget he put me on the radio during a high school basketball game at Nether Providence High School during a Christmas Tournament in December of 1970. I was only 12 at the time but will never forget it.

Thanks and keep in touch--

Fred, you weren't the only one running or riding a bike behind the mosquitos killing machine "the Fogger" who knew.... we ended up smarter than the kids nowaday ;-). Guess we were built tougher than kids these days. We didn't have to worry about getting sick from hamburgers those days which were loaded with fat and now e-coli is making the scene. go figure.......

R&B--You've reminded me of my sources of income from age 9-12. First I had to borrow someone's wagon to take newspapers and scrap metal to the junk yard at 6th & Crosby. When I made enough money to buy my own wagon, I added trips to the spring at Deshong Park for water. Chester water was so bad you could smell it. I don't know where they got them but people provided their own jugs. Also worked at Carmen's on at 7th & Crosby. Delivered hoagies and sodas to the counter during Larkin School's lunch hour. Pay was a hoagie and a soda. ED--We played wiki or hoseball. Someone always came up with a piece of an old hose that no one wanted. It was harder to come up with the broom or mop handles.Mothers always seemed to notice when they were missing.

Miss the old days in Sun Village( 50's early 60's), Remington, Bwown,White streets. Hang out on the front porch for hours talk about nothing in particular. Go to the old Jefferies school and play stick ball with a 3" piece of garden hose (never remember where we got the section of hose) Never had any money but: We always found something to do. Go ot the mac on a saturday mornign for 15 cents and come out at 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Never afraid to walk the neighborhood, at any hour, every body new everybody else. Never woried about the cops, If I ever did anything wrong my father was the enforcer. Boy I miss the good old days!

Gallon glass bottles with rings of rubber cut from old inner tubes around the middles to keep the bottles from breaking or rattling in transit. Guess we all drank a lot of cider to get those bottles for the spring water runs. And now people buy expensive water in little bottles, even though tap water tastes good. Hmmmm.

Skyjumper, you brought back some memories! I left Chester to join the USAF in 53. In 54 I was sent to Wheelus Field Tripoli, Libya and flew into Frankfurt several times. I was a Radio Operator on a C-47. Flew into Frankfurt one time just to pick up X-mas trees for the base at Wheelus. I left Wheelus in 56 but prior to leaving there I was offered a position in Crypto in Berlin which I turned down. Now I'm sorry I turned it down. It sounds like it was good duty. Although my next assignment was right here at Saratoga Springs NY where I now call home. STILL MISS CHESTER!!!

Lillie - You obviously grew up at the end of an era in Chester. I don't remember the year that they changed the water in Chester, but when I was growing up it was my job to take my wagon and get spring water from the Highland Ave. spring. The reason was that neither Philadelphia nor Chester had sewer processing plants and Chester used to draw its water from the Delaware river only a couple of miles down river from Phila's sewer outlets. Chester would suck in all the sewer refuge that still had not decomposed and that included mucho human waste. To bring the water up to state required health standards, the City of Chester had to overload the system with chlorine which gave it the putrid taste. The water was good for most household chores but you did not want to drink it. When they obtained a new source of water from the Octoraro reservoir near Oxford, Pa. the water became one of the best tasting in the region.

Did you ever go on the Wilson Line down the Delaware River to Riverview Park in N.J.? Did you ever go to Lenape Park for a picnic? It doesn't look the same. Went by there a couple of months ago. Sad!! Our Church (North Chester Baptist) used to have our picnics there in the summer. Chester Park, also had church picnics there sometimes. Was a good place for young folks. We used to go there to get water from the Spring in the center of the Park. Chester water was bad tasting for awhile. Don't remember why. Nobody could drink it.

Paula, my mother lives in Chester. My father and her have been married forty years and have two children (My brother and I) and five grandchildren.

Ronette, it's a small world. I remember Mendell because he provided the craziest pledging experience. He may not remember me; but the next time you see him, let him know that I was the person he pledged in Spring of 88 where he could not keep anything from me. As fast as he took my line brothers note book and ID card, I would snatch it back. As you can see, I was a little crazy while pledging. You don't take anything from Mendell especially because he was a football player. One time, he took me to the side and told me not to snatch anything from him again. I remember Day-Day briefly. The only person I remember from Union is Mendell. While I was pledging, we met Blair Underwood's brother. He is a Sigma also.

While at Union, you may have come in contact with some of our brothers from State. They spent a lot of time at Union. Truck (David Vaughn), Gello(Angelo), & Pooh(Ron Kerney), spent a lot of time at Union.

In regards to trash talking, I do believe our football time beat Union this year. (Smile)

Take care and God Bless

Del parks worked at WDEL in Wimington, never worked in chester stations that I know I knew his sons well growing up. The other Chester station was in the Wolf building on third street don't remember the call letters. Ruth brown was almost killed in a auto accident in Chester in the early 50s was singing in one of those bars in Bethel court. Mabe Stanleys or the Moonglow. I saw a young Jackie Wison with Billy Ward and the Domminoes around 52-53 Also the R&B group the Moonglows at the Moomglow sorta like Lou Gehric getting Lou Gehrics desease. My brother was stationed in Frankfurt germany I was down south in munich There was a wonderful bar in Munich called the Metropole a phone at every table with a number above great if you took rejection personally lots of fun if a officer came in with his wife he was sure to get a call. They had swing dance contest (jitterbug if you came from Chester, jive dancing if you hailed from Chester and the Lindy hop if your over 75)The year was 1956 and my brother won fifty marks in the dance contest we were both decked out in our chester finest Six button benny. high rise pegs, box toed loafers mr "B" collar knitted tie with large knot you know a couple of Peacocks. Later we went on the town spotted a Elvis Presley movie playing at a german theater bought a ticket sat down did not understand a word of the dubbed dialog until the song Teddy Bear came on and every one in the theater got up and started jitterbuging it was a sight i never forgot still don't know the name of the movie its the one where he sings TeddyBear.I always loved Elvis rockabilley 'trying to get to you' was and is still my favorite. it was very popular in Europe 1956-57.Some one must have liked M&M tailor mades because they were all stolen from me before i left Munich for TDY in Bad Tolzs. By the time I got back to Chester every one was wearing Chinos, clark boots and kakies think I'll give some one else the floor.

Hello Chesterites,

Growing up it was the best place to be. I do come home to visit because I still have family living there. I sure miss the hoagies and cheese steaks. When I'm home, I make a trip to Don's to get me a good cheese steak. Remember the dances at the YMCA on 7th & Engle Sts? Mom's hoagie shop on 3rd St.

I'm sorry to hear they closed Booker T. Washington elementary school. I went to school there and I used to live at 604 Central Avenue.

Shortie the baillif with the long purple robe was the DJ who played R&B late at night on Chester station long before rock & roll made its debut about 1955.Gee by the Crows was the first cross over R&B hit I can remember. Also "Let the good times roll" Shirley and Lee set the Chester dance halls on fire. What a great jitterbug tune. Bill Haley added drums to a hillbilly band became the Comets instead of the Saddlemen and the rest is history. I saw Tony Bennet at the Chester Armory about 1952 he sang "Cold cold heart" probably lip sang it but I was to young to realize.Chester was a great dance town. My brother went to Germany and won every dance contest he entered. Beleive me the young Germans were great dancers. Ahh the memories.

He was also the dispatcher for the Chester police department. The business was sold to Robert Nacrelli who sponsered a little league team YMRC

It great to read all the stories about Old Chester. It brings back so many memories of growing up there. I hope Chester will be rebuilt.

If any body can help with a donation to a food cupboard it would be appreciated at this time.

The foodcupboard that I run is called The Bernardine Center, It is located right across the street from the old Sacred Heart Hospital. $1 will go along way if we buy from the Philadelphia food Bank. Our address is 2625 W 9th St Chester, PA 19013. We also have a web site Bernardinecenter.org. Thank you

If anyone has an interest - I just saw a Chester High School year book for 1928 on sale on EBAY. The book belonged to Bertha Lutz. Found inside the book, were the report cards for Bertha, dried flowers, two child photo negatives and graduation commencement ceremony booklet. Thought I'd pass this on in case a family member wanted it. The item # is 1585357649.

Love reading all the articles. Was "John's Doggie House" on Edgemont Ave. around the corner from the YMCA? If that's the one I remember, they had the best hot dogs in town. I remember the Mac theater. Used to go there for only 15 cents. When they upped the price to 25 cents, we were very upset. But we went anyhow. I worked at Stotter's Dept Store one Christmas in 1948. Good place to work.

Does anyone else remember local broadcasts, back in the early 1950s, of church services from "The Holy Temple Church of God in Christ" (or maybe "of Jesus Christ")? I don't recall the affiliation of this church; however, the joyful music and clapping was a revelation to me, having experienced only the church services on the west side of the city. In that same era, if you hunted for them, some stations carried the real "rhythm and blues" (pre-Elvis) and, later in the evening, latin music. Big Mama Willie Mae Thornton, Ruth Brown, and so many others. This was before Bill Haley and rock n roll. Before American Bandstand.

LEE: Thank you for your post to me. The Dr. Murray family I referred to (and I can't remember why or what the post was about) and lived on Highland Ave. directly across the street from Rez, consisted of Frank (my age), Tommy (older and now deceased) and a daughter whose name might have been Peggy (she was our coach for the girls' basketball team - very pretty and she was the oldest). Chick could very well have been the oldest and if he died in 1942, that would have been the year I met them and never knew about another son. It can be understood why he was never mentioned - by 10 year olds.

Of course, there could have been two Dr. Murrays on Highland Ave., but I don't remember that. And, if Chick went down with the Sullivan Bros., that is the saddest story of all. Thanks again for your response.

Fred Thomsen, I think thejanitor was nick named "Snaggle Tooth". '57 died in '63- sold it off for $20. Gino's, huh?? - you were wearing Andi's black wig, Pop's hip boots and his rubber coated, acid resistant work coat (if memory serves me it was about 90 degree that night). I think that was the same night Joe Harrington dropped the lit cigarette down the back seat (with 8 people in the car) had to buy a waxed paper cup to get water to put it out. How about that ride to Woodbury NJ to see Andi. Soft ice cream place???? maybe Mister Frosty?

To Pat McFadden who has mentioned Dr. Murray of Highland Ave several times on this board. Dr. Murray had a son who played football for Chester High. "Chick Murray" is the only name I remember. He went into the Navy in early 1942 just after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He went down on the USS Juneau late (Nov ?) 1942 along with the five Sullivan brothers. This happened just off Guadacanal. I don't recall another Murray son but there was a daughter. That is my recollection. I did not know the family personally. If you know the facts to be different please respond. My memory has been known to play tricks on me.

I am a Doctoral student at Widener University. I am in the process of gathering information for my dissertation. I am writing about the Chester School District. Not as it is seen today in State receivership but, as it was when most of the students attending received a good education at the Chester School District. I would like to communicate with former teacher or students about the school district they remember. No information will be used in my dissertation without the approval of the person giving the information. I am trying to produce a living history of the Chester School district. There is a another story to tell about the Chester School District beside the negative one that being told in the media today. I would like to bring that story out in my dissertation Please contact me at my e-mail address. Thank you.

I have such fond memories of Chester! Attended St. Michael's from '64 thru '68 (grades 5-8). Jeffries prior to that. Used to stand in the playground and smell John's Doggie' sauce cookin'. Remember playing "double dutch" with Srs of St Joseph and all the Wednesday Mass obligations and long processions around the "block." Initially lived on Hinkson Street by the railroad tracks. Every time a train went by, the whole house shook. Best part was the Chester Eastern Little League right behind out house and the playground one block away! Loved shopping "downtown" in Spears Bros., Sears, Yorks, McCrory's, Woolworth's and all the rest. My mom took me every Monday. Life was great then. If only I'd known that at the time. I've got lots of photos; pulling them all out. This site is great, keep up the good work.

Just got the sad news that Zelmadene Bean passed away. You Claymont folks might remember her as Deany the bar maid at George's tavern in the shopping center near Brookview apts. I remember her as my brothers girlfriend in high school. she was a real good looker back then. Married Babe Silva and Chester Vic. She fought her weight in later years. The RR tracks that run along the old Industrial highway is the old Reading freight line. The trolley track was much narrower and ran the other side but often right down the middle of the road as it does now on main street Media. Remember they had Stretchers and nurses on duty at the Washington theater when Birth of a baby and Pick up on south street played at the theater around 52-53-.Also remember hundreds of motorcycles in front of the Stanley theater when the Wild One with Marlon Brando made its debut. sure liked to have a picture of that one. Thanks for your time now if I could only figure how to use spell check after posting comments on the bulletin board.

hgc---The Washington Theater always brings back fond memories. From the time I was about 10 or 11, I would go to the "Y" on Sat morning for Gym & Swim. After that directly to the Washington where for 12 cents we would see 2 westerns, 2 serials, and cartoons. My grandmother would arrive with hotdogs from John's Doggie Shop. What great times to remember.

Happy Hour movies on Friday nights at the First Baptist: it may have cost a nickel (or not) and you saw one or two "serials" of the time. I think this was in the late '40s and early '50s. Parents and their children attended, though you didn't have to be a member of First Baptist. It was open to all. It was usually a full house, too.

I remember this old abandoned house in Highland Gardens. We use to use it as a fort. I remember Billy Wojs fell through one of the floors and almost ripped his guts out. He probably still has a big scar across his stomach. Also remember the Spiveys thier father used to make moonshine. Ricky would steal some and bring it over to the fort and we would sip it but that was all. It tasted like lighter fluid it was horrible. He would sit there and get toasted on about a half of an 8 ounce glass.

I must be a lot older than the rest of you. In the 50s I was out of school and working, living at the YWCA and skating at the local rink. I also went to the YMCA dances and met a lot of great people. I enjoyed the movies at the Boyd, State and Stanley theatres. Dinner at the Yellow Bowl was a special occasion.

ToTomCHS'76, If I remember correctly, the movies at the playgrounds on summer evenings were set up by the city department of Parks & Recreation. At least the ones at Jefferies school in the 50's were. That was the same department that ran the summer playgrounds. Miss Cox, the girls guidance counselor at Smedley JHS was one of the directors of the summer programs. Many of us who worked there were college students who later became teachers, many in the Chester schools. I don't remember religious or anti-drugs groups showing movies at the playgrounds back then. Maybe it was different in the '70's.

Terry, My father's parents also emigrated from the Ukraine in the early 1900's but they didn't come through Ellis Island (I just assumed they had since a lot of immigrants came thru there.) But a cousin of mine did some genealogy and found that my grandmother came right into the port of Philadelphia and my grandfather into Baltimore or Boston (can't remember which).

I'm sure quite a few folks on here have parents or grandparents who emigrated during the early 1900's. My grandparents on my dad's side Walter and Agata Owsiany were Polish Imigrants. I have tried to find them on the Ellis Island website, but have only found my great uncle so far.

BUT YOU ALWAYS HAD SOME BIG KID STANDING IN YOUR FEILD OF PLAY. WE HAD TO FREEZE IF THEIR BALL CAME OUR WAY. DUFFY, I AGREE WITH YOU ALMOST ALL OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WAS 1ST OR 2ND GENERATION. MY GRANDPARENTS CAME FROM WALES. THEY FIRST LIVED IN SCRANTON, WHEN THE MINES CLOSED THEY CAME TO WORK AT SUN OIL. THEY FIRST LIVED IN lINWOOD.

We use to collect Christmas trees and have huge bon-fires in the ball feild too. the charred skeltons of the tree would end up in the weeds and swamp. that reminded me of a childhood experience. When i was little all the kids in the neighborhood played baseball almost all day long. Being the younger crowd we hardly ever got to play on the ballfield. So one summer we made our own ball feild on the flat piece of land on the 1200 block of curry street. We chopped weeds down, mowed grass, built benches and a backboard. Granted left field was partialy in the street, but during the day cars weren't parked in front of the 4 lone houses on that block, and it hardly ever gat any traffic. So it was a minor problem. Our big problem wa right feild, right feild had a stand of sticker bushes in it. We tried everything to get rid of them, But nothing worked. So we decided to burn them down. Of course the fire got out of our control we were all sitting on the curb when the fire trucks came, fireman asked us if we saw who started the fire we said no must have been some big kids from over by the food Fair. The whole field burned from Curry street to the creek to 9th street. we were sure we were going to jail. Ilearned a valuable lesson that day. As we stood looking overour precious ball feild and the swamp and feild burned to the ground, onlything standing was the occasional christmas tree carcus andTHE STAND OF STICKER BUSHES! YUP I LEARNED STICKER BUSHES DON'T BURN

The turned to making fasteners of all types. They changed the name to Southco Inc. they are now on Brinton Lake Rd. in Concordville. I worked for them from 1958 to 1990.

I remember the dances they had in the McCaffery Village playgrounds. I can remember dancing to "Mona Lisa". They had great turnouts. I just want to say I really enjoyed the Fall Reunion. I was lucky enough to be "Home" during that time. It was so great seeing you, Dan and making memories with Iris, Wanda and Joyce during lunch at the Upland Diner. I'm amazed at the beautiful history that has been illustrated. There has been some discussion about whether to call the east end of Chester east end or east side. For some, it was called the east end. While I was growing up, some called it the east side. I grew up on McDowell Avenue near Sun Village and attended Jeffies Elementary School during the early seventies. I'm not debating what to call the east end. Chester has been so diverse that it's good to witness the beatiful qualities that it has offered especially through various names designated in certain areas of the city.

I remembered marching with the Mighty Warriors who were founded by Ms. Taylor, Ms. Nancy Pierce, and Ms. Bell. We would compete against the East Side Angels, William Penn Hornets, and various others. These were great times because we could compete demonstrating our cadet and drumming skills and not have any problems.

One of the parades I hated to march was the Memorial Day parade in Upper Darby. The parade was great but we had to march up some long hills. These memories will last in my mind for a long time.

Can anyone tell me what use to be the name of the pizza shop that was near the Old John Doggie's store near St. Michael's School? Also, does anyone remember the Farmer's Market downtown? How about the drive in movie in Eddystone that was near a bowling alley? I remember going to this movie once when I was a very young child.

Please continue to educate us about the rich history and beautiful moments in Chester.

Thanks!

Do I remember the Xmas tree fires? One of my finest memories. We use to go all over getting them trees. We would have a group go to Buckman a group go to Highland gardens and of course all through the village. I remember one time someone (I think it Billy Hess) thought he was being cool and threw some shot gun shells in. Well he didn't tell us that he emptied the pellets out. We all flew in opposite directions when the first one went off. He just stood there laughing. And the heat at some of them fires was so intense you couldn't get within 30 feet of them. We had fires higher than the building. The firemen and police would come and we would scatter. What they didn't realize is how much money we were saving the city by not having the trash men or the city workers having to pick up the trees. We use to watch the fires to make sure there were no problems and everyone had hoses in there yards just in case, but I think the police and firemen just wanted something to do. Out of the many years that we had those fires there was never one incident.

Regarding Chester's Medal of Honor recipient, here is the text of the citation: *REESE, JAMES W.

Rank and organization. Private, U.S. Army, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. Place and date. At Mt. Vassillio, Sicily, 5 August 1943. Entered service at: Chester, Pa. Birth: Chester, Pa. G.O. No.: 85, 17 December 1943. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life. above and beyond the call of duty in action involving actual conflict with the enemy. When the enemy launched a counterattack which threatened the position of his company, Pvt. Reese, as the acting squad leader of a 60-mm. mortar squad, displaying superior leadership on his own initiative, maneuvered his squad forward to a favorable position, from which, by skillfully directing the fire of his weapon, he caused many casualties in the enemy ranks, and aided materially in repulsing the counterattack. When the enemy fire became so severe as to make his position untenable, he ordered the other members of his squad to withdraw to a safer position, but declined to seek safety for himself. So as to bring more effective fire upon the enemy, Pvt. Reese, without assistance, moved his mortar to a new position and attacked an enemy machinegun nest. He had only 3 rounds of ammunition but secured a direct hit with his last round, completely destroying the nest and killing the occupants. Ammunition being exhausted, he abandoned the mortar. seized a rifle and continued to advance, moving into an exposed position overlooking the enemy. Despite a heavy concentration of machinegun, mortar, and artillery fire, the heaviest experienced by his unit throughout the entire Sicilian campaign, he remained at this position and continued to inflict casualties upon the enemy until he was killed. His bravery, coupled with his gallant and unswerving determination to close with the enemy, regardless of consequences and obstacles which he faced, are a priceless inspiration to our armed forces.

I would like to pay late homage to all the veterans out there as I was away the last couple days on business and could not get on line.

Special note to one of my McCaffery Village buddies Pete who lost his brother Tommy (Thomas Vernon Rhoads) in Vietnam I will never forget the day that we all in the village heard about it mostly all of us pulled our curtains half mast. Pete took it very very hard. And he still had another brother Jerry over there. Jerry came home safely but I consider the war still got him, because he flipped out about 15 years ago. I can't explain it but he just walked away from his family and started living on the streets like it was a battle zone. Maybe it was to him post traumatic stress is a weird thing and you never know when it is going to get you. Jerry and I were also friends, but the last time we spoke was about 5 years ago. I saw his sister in a restaurant a couple months ago and she told me he had passed away last year.

Gotta love that Daily Times the obit was not even in there. Maybe that's why readership is down it IS the worst paper I ever read. Maybe that's why I don't read it anymore. So those of you who think you are missing something by not get it on the web. You are not because any good writer who works for them does not work for them long unless of course they don't want to move from Delco.

caroline;the right away is still there it is on the chester pike side of the railroad, runs right under the 291 overpass, and connects to eastwick ave., in phila, and powhatten avenue in lester ,pa. ptc used to have a trolley (double ended) CALLED A hog island car.THE ROAD BED WAS SO BAD THAT YOU COULD SEE THE CAR ENDS TWIST AND THE FLOOR BOARDS WORK BACK AND FORTH ALMOST LIKE AN AMUSEMENT RIDE.the bridge abuttments for the darby creek are still there.recentily chester put new sewer lines in forth street near crosby, and i believe they dug up rail ties out of the street!!!!i have several books and calenders with pictures and story lines on the 37.the last surviving HOG ISLAND CAR was severly vandalized in phila about 5 years ago,if it survives,it is now in scranton,pa,at steamtown ,it was burned very badly.as you can tell i am a rail nut,and the #37 was my favorite, its nickname was the CHESTER SHORTLINE AND LITERATURE SAYS IT COULD MAKE THE RUN FROM 13TH AND FILBERT TO 3RD AND MARKET IN AN HOUR AND 5 MINUTES.i think its cost for the entire run was $.221/2.there were at least two really bad firery accidents between the cars and trucks, the overpass on 291 was built to eliminate the grade crossing by the airport.

Good Morning everyone. Does anyone out there recall a mill called Rolling Steel Mill? I just received a death certificate and under occupation it states: foreman Rolling Steel Mill. As much as I've serached on Google and through some historical sites, I can not find a business by this name. Any ideas?

The foreman's name is Levi Thomas Jackson who died in 1951 in Woodlyn, if that info helps!

hgc...if you go to the foot of 420 and hang a left at the end..following that road back behind Westinghouse they have built a new road over to Island road and UPS..what I did notice while there is a railroad track along the waterway..Is that the old trolly track. I don't believe that is the same track that is across the street which is used by box cars. Having seen this part of the track for the first time and now that the area is cleared, I did think that if it was a passenger line it was a lovely trip even today it would be a nice ride. Next time I'll look to see if it went toward Eddystone or ended there.

to harvey martin and ray agent; i rode the #37 when it entered the "meadows" on its way to chester, many times. the motorman's trick was to "peg " the controller, while he collected fares while the trolley ran by itself ,doing about 10 miles an hour.no one at the controls,i know people will say that didn't happen, but it did,and i saw it several times myself. the company also had a "relief motorman" who's job was to operate the car while the regular motorman collected fares in the car, from 94th street to baldwin's and catch the next car back in the other direction or phila. while that motorman collected fares ,then off at 94th street and catch the car back toward chester and so on.i guess when the relief motorman wasn't available the motorman pegged the controller and the phantom motorman operated the car.incidentally the LOOP was located just north of where the WAWA store is now located.the #37 last operated in chester in 1946,there was a nasty accident on the crum creek bridge, which trapped several cars between the bridge and chester, since the wooden bridge was deemed unsafe for street cars and penn highway dept wanted to punch #291 through to 4th street in chester from saville avenue the line was eventually converted to busses from essington to 3rd and market chester, the last trolley operated to the loop in 1957,this ended p.t.c. trolley #37 in delco.

hgc & Ray, A friend, Frank Moran, used to drive the 37. He says it was his favorite run...I guess because he liked that part across the meadows too. He said he hit just about everything except an airplane and if they had ran the tracks a little closer to the airport he would have got one of them too.

I remember marching in the Chester High School Marching Band. It was one of the greatest experiences I encountered while in High School (Class of 1985) In the early 70's when I was a child, I remember when Ms. Fitzpatrick was the band director and the High School band was famous for performing the soundtrack from the movie Shaft.

There were many places I visited while living in Chester. I could not wait to see the Mother's Day parade. While I was in middle school, I would go skating at the Salvation Army on Friday. There are so many fond memories I have. My brother and I played baseball at the Chester East Little league field. I can't forget about my parents taking me to Jollies seafood on the east side.

Finally, I remember the Olympic torch that came past Jeffries Elementary School I believe it was the either the winter of 1980 or 1981.

Skyjumper,

This is in response to your question about the Congressional Medal of Honor (C.M.H.) winner from Chester during WWII.

He was 23-year-old Pfc. James William Reese, (US Army; Co. F 26th Inf. 1st Div.), killed in action in Mt. Vassilio, Sicily, Italy on August 5, 1943.

Mr. Reese is interred in Soldiers' Circle at Chester Rural Cemetery. As you enter Soldiers' Circle facing the statue, his grave is immediately on your right (second of the three inner circles).

Hope this helps,

John

The recolection of the trolley really hit homeI went to my first Mummers parade on the trolley out of the loop which is where Lou Turks now stands.Lived in Essington for a short while and we also hoped the trooleys when they turned them on the loop.it was a noisey scary ride we always hung on the back i have been to both trolley museums in PA> and I always reminice. Its really nothing compared to the kids in N>Y> wingwalking atop the subways in N>Y> Now thats scarey.

Two questions? Was Ranger Joe only in Chester? Who from the philadelphia/delaware county area won the C.M.H. in world War 11.I bought a box of pictures at a flea market one shows a middle age women with the medal around her neck i now she didnt win the thing. Some where i heard there was only one winner from this area.the pictures appears to be taken in the forties.Thank you for the time.

to ray agent the trolley ,you speak of was the route #37 trolley.the trolley stopped running to chester in 1946,(the bus route is still #37) much has been written on the 37,one book refers to it as"by far the most interesting route on the p.t.c. system.lester and the meadows used to be the areas where the trolley pole was yanked off the wire most often.

I don't know if anyone would be interested or not but today I was waxing nostalgic (not one drink) about my wasted youth. In the early 40's the old PTC (Phila. Transportation Company) ran a regular trolley between downtown Phila. and Chester. The line started at third and Market St., Chester, across from Stotter's Department Store. It followed a route roughly the same as the present Industrial Hwy. (PA 291) and when it passed through Tinicum it shot across the marshes (then called the Meadows) to a spot near 84th. st. and on over to Island Road up to Woodland ave. and on downtown. I think the whole trip cost about 15 cents. When it went across the Meadows it had about a two mile run with no stops where it could hit speeds of 40 mph+. When it did it swayed so much that the back end was as much as a foot out of alignment with the front. Being 11 or twelve and not wanting to spend such a princely sum I decided to do what the kids did in Phila. I hopped on the back of the trolley with one arm hanging over the single headlight and my feet precariously balanced sideways on the top of the 1 inch top lip of the cowcatcher. Talk about a wild ride. Today's roller coasters don't even approach the fear and adrenaline rush. I did this round trip about two times and finally came to my senses. Even to this day my mother who is living at a grand age of 89, does not know about my adventures.

Hello there! I'm so happy to see your website. I grew up in Chester (Mowry Street), two houses away from Edgmont Ave. I was born in 1964 and lived in Chester for the first 12 formative years of my life. I remember so much! I know things are a little different now, but I sure would like to visit again when I get a chance. I can still smell the wonderful odors coming out of Buemi's Baker and Dunkin Donuts on Edgmont, and who can forget Phil & Jim's and La Spada's? I used to walk from Mowry Street all the way to Brookhaven to attend private school. Thanks for all your hard work in maintaining this web site!

Helena: Bible Pres (and the DVBS) produced a "bevy" of Christian workers and it helped many of the "urchins" from that part of Chester. By the way, "Day of Discovery" (religious tv program) will be airing a program on Francis and Edith Schaeffer sometime in 2003 on one of their regularly scheduled (weekly, I believe) programs. It will deal with the years (1942-1943) the Schaeffers were serving at Bible Pres. as well as the rest of their ministry with L'abri in Switzerland. Be on the lookout for it.

Dan CHS 54. I just wanted to have the opportunity to respond to your question. Tom already gave you the names of the inductees. Thank you Tom. The festivities were top notch. The Chester High School Hall of Fame Commitee always puts on a class Banquet. The Hall of Fame Banquet started off being held at Chester High, and the YMCA near the High. Now the event has been graduated to the Concordville Inn for the past two years. This festive celebration will continue to grow with each additional induction, and will have to again be moved to a bigger venue as more elite Chester Athletes are inducted. Peace and love to all. I remember two clubs in Sun Village. The Sun Village AA and the Sun Village Sportsclub. They did more than sponsor Baseball teams. Every Christmas Santa would be on Morton Ave and we would stand in line to see him and always got a big box of hard candy. During the summer they had picnics. They would have corn husking contests, pie eating contest, pony rides, sack races and all kinds of games for the kids all day long, In the evening the adults would dance in the pavilion. They took us by bus to Connie Mack Stadium to see the Phillies play, once a year.

All activities were open to all children in the Village even if your father did't belong to the club. The men who ran these clubs help make Chester such a great place to grow up in .

My mother was so fond of Hannah that she would go across the street for lunch!!! My favorite across-the-street store was Loft's Candy Kitchen. Remember the wonderful chocolate logs they made? Also, do you recall your hourly wage? Mine was 50 cents/hour. Even in those days you couldn't do much with 50 cents. But, I must say that they don't keep eating establishments as clean and sanitary today as Whelan's did. And, the food was good. The food servers had to wear hairnets - today, no need and I don't understand it.

To: Pat McFadden I graduated from Chester High School, 1947. I worked at Whelans Drug Store 1944, 1945. Yes, I do remember Hannah. She ran that soda fountain like a boot camp, clean uniforms and all. I also remember the 2 druggist who had an open window back in the pharmcy dept where they could peer out at the soda fountain to make sure we were doing our job. Across the street from Whelans was the Sun Ray Drugh store. During the war they would line up to get their ration of cigaretts. Its great hearing from you. I submitted my father's profile to the Old Chester website. He was principal Fredrick Douglas Jr. High School. My daughter was in Phila. in September. She did go down to Chester to look around.

Marylou, Yes, I have a sister Joyce living in Brookhaven. You have the neighbor's houses correct, too. They were the Giltinan's (Mary was a friend of mine), the Fiorelli's (Larry was in the same class as my sister Carol) and us, the Locowicki's. I'm the oldest, have six sisters and a brother. I don't remember who you are - did you know the Mcgoverns who lived in the 1200 block of Curry?

Tom, Are you referring to Betty McGee (now Payne)? She's my mother in law (I'm married to Bud (or Foster) as you may know him). Betty lives in Boothwyn right off Chichester Ave. Helen is my sister and of course you know Tom (they live in Glen Mills). And you guessed right - we Locowicki's lived next door to Larry Fiorelli and then my family lived in McCaffery Village (my sister Carol and I were out on our own by that time - lived near Chester Park).

It is a small world, isn't it.

Hi Mary Lou, I remember the Barbers very well. They were wonderful neighbors, especially to the children. I lived at 1211 Remington from 1949 to 1962 (3 doors from the Barbers). They did give out the best treats (those red candied apples) at Halloween and all through the year (that same red candy at Christmas in different holiday shapes). Each summer they would show the movies they had taken during the year and also the movies from previous years. We would all bring our chairs and gather in front of their house and have treats and watch the movies (parents and children). It was always a wonderful memory filled fun time. On hot summer days they would bring out their big old washtubs and fill them and we kids would have a great time splashing around. I also have a very sad remembrance of their family. They had only one daughter. I believe she died in childbirth in the late '50s when she was in her early 20's. It was very tragic. The whole neighborhood was deeply saddened by it. Whenever we have family get togethers we still reminisce about the good neighbors we had in Sun Village. What street did you live on in Sun Village?

I would love to say hello to a former co-worker at Whelan's. I worked there after school hours in '48, '49 and part of '50. Our fearless and sometimes forgiving leader then was Hannah, Edna was our humorous dish washer, and her wonderful mother made all the salads. Can you still smell the tuna fish as you went downstairs to change into your uniform? I can. I worked with Evelyn Phillips, Joan Hesling and Jeannette (cannot remember her last name). CORRECTION to my previous post. Joe Keenan's bar was at 3rd and Edgemont not 2nd. I must have been half asleep when I typed the other post. I don't know if he had a son Tommy. Pat: Was their a Norman McFadden in your family who would be close to my age (75)?

This is getting curiouser and curiouser. The first Joe Keenan whose son would be 70, could well be my grandmother's nephew and my father's first cousin (my father's name is "Tom", and I said before another brother is "Joe"). I know there were two McFadden families there in the early 1900's - one headed by John McFadden, the other by Neal(my grandfather) - and the same names kept popping up in both families. For instance, we have no "Johns".

When I was 3 or 4, I clearly remember my grandmother taking me to a local bar and sitting me on the stool. I remember because I was given a sweet drink (coke, I guess) and I could turn round and round on that stool - what fun - so that's how I remember it so clearly. But, I also know it was a bar, had a side door for ladies' entrance and we lived not far from where you say Joe Keenan had his bar. It's possible that my grandmother went there to see Joe Keenan because he might have been the only contact she had with her family. This makes sense because her father never spoke to her again after she married my grandfather (don't know the reason for that either). I guess he was a scallawag to him - but he loved all his children and provided well for them until his very early death.

Also, when I look at the picture of Joe Keenan in his '49 yearbook, there is a resemblance between him and my father.

So, this is all very helpful and if I could talk to Jean, this might clear up a mystery the entire family has wondered about for years - and I can then pass it on. I am one of the oldest descendants now left and it would be nice if I could get this information.

Thanks people.

Duffy---Here's a bookend to your story. This was either 1948 or 49 on Halloween a couple of us from Madison St by the river left the neighborhood (no treats there) and went for better pickens. We also stopped at the same mansion(on 19th or 20th & Providence) where a real lady sat with us while we ate cookies and drank apple cider(which none of us had ever had before). Can't say we were as well recieved at our other stops in that neighborhood.

Just to drop a line to everyone . If anyone of you have a nvidia graphics card on their computor you can go to www.nvidia.com to download a program called EARTHVIEWER for a 30 day trial and see what chester or any place in the world looks like now. "IT'S FREE" McCaffery Village looks like a wasteland but I heard the were building on my old stomping grounds BYE

Speaking of Halloween, let me tell you about this. One year a few of us urchins (in the 1940s) went out to "trick or treat" and we thought we'd venture "uptown" in the "upper class neighborhood" where the pickins may be better. We went to the Wetherall (sp?) mansion and rang the bell. A lady answerred, politely invited this rag-tag group (about 5 of us) of 10 year olds in. She said NO ONE had come to her house at all that night. She took us through a tour of the "mansion" gave us a bagful of goodies and 25 cents each! God bless her. I think she owned the place.

P.S. FLOYD: Your email address gives the impression that you might be a doctor. If so, could you be related to Dr. Murray on Highland Ave. during the 40's and 50's - had two sons, Frank and Tom.

KATE: Caroline is away for a few days, and I know she will appreciate your greetings. I do too. We miss you!

Thanks very much Floyd, and the age figures. Anyone in my and Joe's age bracket would have children in their 40's or 50's. I would very much appreciate your asking Joe if he has an Aunt Jean. Thank you again. "Keenan" was my paternal grandmother's maiden name - and although there were 10 children and I would estimate at least 100 descendants from them, no one, absolutely no one knows who her parents and siblings were - except that they came here from Ohio. We were told her father was a police officer and that's it. I find no police officer in the archives here with the last name "Keenan". However, my mother told me at one time that she thought Jean Keenan was my cousin. And, my grandparents named their second son "Joseph" - so could be.

Kicking it up stairs to the Corp which owns a dozen or so newspapers is supposed to get the editor off the spot. The pattern of what went on the web site was established over a number of yrs. Evidently, the editor is under the usual pressure to increase profit and has decided that too many locals are going to the site and not buying the paper. To drop articles from the site is not a Corp decision. It is a decision of the local editor would make. I guess now that they've cut most of the columns and local articles the paper's bottom line will improve greatly. The editor did aknowledge to me that this action is unfair to out-of-area readers of the web site.As I stated before the site is no longer of interest to me.

Hi Pat -Hmmm you might be right. It may be a different Joe Keenan. I know that Joe's father - also named Joe - owned a bar - I think it was called Keenan's Tavern - in Chester years ago before he sold it and bought the Frontier Saloon in Folsom. My Dad knew him. Joe Senior died about six years ago - maybe more - and his son began running the bar. Next time I talk to him, I'll ask him if he has an aunt named Jean. Best to everyone on the Old Chester PA page. My friend Joe is in his 40's and could not have graduated fromm CHS on 1949 though.

To Floyd Murray: Thanks for the input. However, I don't know if we're talking about the same Joe Keenan. The Joe Keenan I would like to get in touch with had a sister, Jean, and I don't remember a Peggy - that doesn't mean he didn't have another sister, Peggy. But, if your Joe graduated CHS in 49, I would really like to have his email address, if he has one.

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CAROLINE. Today is the birthday of Caroline who contributes so much to this board for your enjoyment and knowledge, among many activities she is involved in. I don't know how she does it. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLINE - our local Wonder Woman.

Hi Everyone - Joe Keenan is a friend of mine and he owns the Frontier Saloon in Folsom. His father did own a bar in Chester years ago, before my time. Joe's sister Peggy is also a friend and she owns the Raceway Cafe in Boothwyn. Joe never owned the Ponderosa. It used to be owned by a fellow named Frank Kaminski but I am not sure who owns it now.

LAST NIGHT BEING HALLOWEEN I REMEMBERED HALLOWEENS AS A CHILD IN SUN VILLAGE. WE MUST HAVE COVERED AT LEAST 70 HOUSES AND HAD TONS OF CANDY. I REMEMBER EVERY YEAR GOING TO A HOUSE ON REMINGTON STREET I THINK THE NAME WAS BARBER, AND THEY GAVE OUT HOMEMADE APPLE TAFFIES THEY ALSO TOOK HOME MOVIES OF EVERYONE THAT CAME TO THEIR HOUSE. IT WOULD BE AMAZING TO SEE THOSE MOVIES TODAY NEEDLESS TO SAY EVERYONE WENT TO THEIR HOUSE TO GET THAT CANDIED APPLE. BACK THEM HALF THE FUN OF HALLOWEEN WAS THE PEOPLE HAD TO GUESS WHO YOU WERE. IF YOU COULD DRESS UP GOOD ENOUGH TO FOOL THEM YOU USUALLY GOT EXTRA CANDY. ONE NIGHT I WAS IN THE ALLY BETWEEN JOHNSON ST AND BALWIN STREET A FRIEND AND A GROUP OF BIG KIDS CAME BY US, ONE OF THEM GRABBED MY CANDY BAG I WAS DRESSED AS A LITTLE BASEBALL PLAYER AND WAS CARRING A BAT SO I WACKED HIM OVER THE HEAD WITH MY BAT HE DROPPED THE BAG AND WE GRABBED AND RAN FOR OUR LIVES!!! NEVER KNEW WHO THAT PERSON WAS. BUT I BET HE CHECKED OUT WHAT KIDS HAD IN THEIR HAND BEFORE HE TRIED TO GRAB ANOTHER BAG
