Marge: I think before it was called the Compass it was Palooka's. If memory serves me correctly it was located on the East Side of McDade just south of Bullens Lane. Trying to remember when it came down probably somewhere in the early 1960's. I think I remember it being there my first and second year in college. Boy it's been a long time but wasn't it painted blue and white?

Up from there on Fairview and McDade was the old hang-out called "hook the spooks" do you remember that.

Does anyone remember the old Compass bar/restaurant on MacDade in Woodlyn? I forget the intersecting road...Bullens Lane? I loved the windows inside the bar - it made you believe you were really on a ship. I was sad when they knocked it down. What year was that?

TO DAN MC GINNISS....pulled out my Smedley "62 year book to make sure it was you. You were the boys phys ed teacher/bb coach all the girls swooned over (sorry if I embarrased you). Remember bb players from my class? Denny Hammond, Ed Hammond, Al McDonald, Charles Kilson, Larry Fiorelli (deceased), Rick Gamble? What a great school and what great teachers (like you) we had. Look under "What's New" section and see pics of John's Doggie Shop (now) and I think there are pics of the music notes (Bill Haley's house on the sidewalk between 4th and 5th Street) somewhere on this site. It is nice to have fond memories of Chester....

first of all, why spend time wasted on anonymous and ask about his name, when its clear he and it has to be a he, because the 90 year old mother still has the apron strings tied to tightly around his neck and the only way he feels manly is to use the power he feels by causing such a rile out of everyone. the word anonymous means exactly that he's such a troublemaker that he is embarressed for anyone to know who he is. and last of all, ignore him and maybe he will go away and let chesterites enjoy this website like john has meant it to be.!!!! and ignoramus i mean anonymous your mother is calling you.

P.S. to my last mail: During the late 30's we had an epidemic of Scarlet Fever or Dyptheria - not sure which - but both doctors worked around the clock with these diseases and saved one life I know of - mine. I was 6 at the time. I missed the first grade at Larkin School because of that illness and probably wouldn't have been alive to attend any school, had it not been for the good doctors. In the 40's there was infantile paralysis to deal with (one of my neighbors my age died from this dreadful disease). I am sure many Chesterites are walking and leading normal lives today because of the care and concern of Drs. DiMedea and DeProphetis.

It appears to me that ANONYMOUS is not only a coward, but hateful, spiteful and illiterate. Wow, he/she is carrying some bad baggage. Let's pray for him/her. Dr. DiMedeo was a wonderful physician who very possibly saved our lives or the lives of our friends and family. God Bless Dr. DiMedeo and Dr. DeProphetis.

John,

I have been on your site several times since the article in the Delco Times. Tonight was the first time I saw something that I needed to share with you. The picture of Dr. DiMedio's hospital was actually his house. The hospital was located to the left of the picture (when facing the house). Dr. DiMedio sold his house to Albert Nacrelli who was a funeral director (he eventually moved to 22nd & Providence). Dr. DiMedio's medical practice was in the hospital until he closed the hospital. He moved his practice to 8th and Kerlin sts (behind Robert Hall's). Dr. Mary DiMedio, his daughter, had her offices in the hospital also. She and her sister were married in the house pictured.

Dr. DiMedio was a good friend of our family. In addition, we lived at 810 W. 3rd street from 1948-1957 so I have first hand knowledge of the area. I am going to check with my mother (she's 90) to see if we have any pictures of the hospital or other relevant pictures of the neighborhood.

John, thank you so much for the website. When I saw your picture with the article in the Daily Times, I recognized you as one of the kids that was in a Tom Thumb wedding held at Madison Street Methodist Church on May 8, 1954. The photographer of the picture was Harrison Studios, Olive Street, Media. You may be not much more than 3 years old but your features have not changed that much! Your father was the superintendent of the Sunday school back then. Also, someone was asking about a fish store on 9th. Street. The store was called Bennet's Aquarium Store.

To Kevin L.

If it were only true that Chester, PA was as these pages show. Most are only beautifuly memories of a happier time in its history. It today is a depressed city with hopes of coming back, but that seems like a grim future. A beautiful small city where the very first court house in America still stands.

I wonder if those of us that use these message boards and talk about our love for Chester, PA would move back today if Chester was the same as it was in our time or offered the housing and employment opportunities that I for one found elsewhere.

Hi there 'Chesterites' or where I come from 'Cestrians'. My name is Kevin Lightfoot, I live in the ancient city of Chester England, very impressed with your web site. It looks like you live in a town not unlike mine, still small enough to be homely but moving ahead with the times - though not losing touch with its history. Best wishes for the future.

To Don McClure, I don't know if you remember me. I went to Jefferies Elementary... lived at East 12th St. & Potter. My name was Helen Sikoutris and my sister was Keke. Remember all the people you mentioned Bruno Biten, Anita Burns, Joey ?(forget last name now) Pat Shropshire & Dottie lou Penniwell were my best friends as well as Cynthia & Dottie Parasink & of course Harry Root. Yes I remeber the old grocery stores you mentioned, but you forgot Leena's. My Grandparents were George & Helen Morakis and they owned the Rialto Restaurant on 9th St. and also lived on Potter. Other classmates Gracie Bowen, Carol Flynn, I think Joyce Locowicki lived on 12th. Big family there. Look forward to hearing from you.

I just finished ready Lou Warfel's book "My Book of Old Chester" on this web site. It is well done and I hope well documented. It reviews happenings and people related to Chester from 1623{ the Dutch& the indians)to 1976. On a personal note it gave a historical perspective to a piece of my early years in Chester. The site that eventually became the Washington Theater, between 4th & 5th and Market Sts, had great historical significance. It was an Inn where George Washington stayed on several occasions during and after the Revelutionary War. In my case, from about age 10- 12 I would go there on Saturdays after gym & swim at the old Chester YMCA. My grandmother would meet me and friends there and supply us with hot dogs from John's Doggie Shop. We'd see a double feature western( Gene Autry, Ken Maynard, Roy Rogers, etc),a serial, and cartoons. The oldchester web sit continues to provide great memories.

I've sure enjoyed reading the posts here and remembering the old days in Chester (1929-1954). Here's one for you all. At about the same time that the Four Aces (singing group) were popular, there were two girls known as the DeJohn Sisters. I think their names were Julie and Dux. Anyone remember them and are they still alive?

Can anyone tell me anything about Dr. Jordan? Two years in her English classes prepared me for a successful career in education. I'll bet she did the same for scores of others. On another note, I've read a lot about Zangari's water ice. I sure had my share of those, but I haven't seen much about May's water ice. It had a different texture than Zangari's, but it was equally delicious! They both had an enjoyable orange flavor; I can't find anyone today who has orange. I'm always told to get the mango, but it's not nearly the same. I also remember May's truck pulling up to curb at Smedley at lunch time in 1952-53 with 25 cent hoagies. It was a great sandwich for those of us who didn't have a lot of lunch money!

Don, you are absolutely correct. The West End Library was at 4th & Jeffrey In the same block as the two schools. Mrs.Ridgway was the Librarian, she lived around the corner from us on Ward Street,Next to the Rogoginski's((sp) and Glessner's. Not sure when it moved to the other locations but it sure was there during the 40's and 50's, George

The West End Branch of the J Lewis Crosier library apparently was in many places. Therefore you must put a time frame on each location. As I mentioned earlier from at least 1942 through 1958 it was at 4th and Jeffery sts. I think the building was the old city hall of South Chester. I say that because there was a jail cell in the basement. Can anyone confirm.

This message goes out to anyone who may have known my father, Frank Buffington. Daddy died when I was only 13, but he did teach me how to shoot a mean game of pool! I am contemplating writing a book on his "colorful" life. I am currently residing in Ireland. I am a writer and a gambler (the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree). Anyway, I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone and everyone who knew my Dad.....thanks, Lynn Buffington P.S. I am speaking of Frank Buffington Senior, not my brother Buffy....I am obviously in touch with him...thanks again, Lynn (also known as "Buff"....

Mom and Dad told me about the web site so I thought I'd check it out. The comment about Washingtom Park was right on the mark. However I don't remember the ice cream. I do remember my brother used to make himself throw-up just so he could get seconds and thirds of the hmaburgers (just one of the stupid things we would do at the park). I even remember playing "got it..dropped it" on the merry-go-round with a stick. I have often thought about building a box hockey game. Remember..."no hops...no blocks...no drags...and no rolling the ball with the stick"??? I used to hang out at the basket ball court...sit on the stumps...and on the Adminstration hill in the 70's. We could even spot a cop car at night by the headlights and parking lights. And if Jack and Jill would satify our munchies by tossing out his left over pretzils we were doing good that night. Anybody else out there???

I think it is apparent we do not support his/her e-mails, but let's just ignore him/her. By feeding into those messages, defeats what the purpose of this website has been set up by John. We are all here to get in touch with other fellow Chesterites, take a trip down memory lane, and at a time like today, express sorrow, send prayers, and give support to one another.

The United States flag consists of two sections and three symbolic colors. The blue canton in the upper left hand corner contains stands for the Union. It's 50 stars represents the fifty states. The 13 red and white stripes in the remainder of the flag symbolize the 13 original colonies. The color blue in the flag symbolizes loyalty, devotion, friendship, justice, and truth. The red stands for courage, zeal, and fervency. The white represents purity and rectitude of conduct.

This is in " MY WORDS " to the meaning of the American Flag.....

The colors of our flag are Red, White, And Blue. Each of those colors represent our right as Americans, to live our lives, raise our families, and contribute what we can to help strenghten our nation. On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, someone thought that they were going to destroy the meaning of these colors and symbols. We as Americans have truly proved them wrong. And we continue to prove them wrong. Our Flag may Bleed, because of our pain, but it will Never, Never run......... Because we all know, we are going to defend Our Flag, and protect the meaning of each Star, and Stripe on it !

Thank you all for reading this, and may God Bless each and every one of us, as he always has....................

Dave Redden.

I note that under libraries the West End Branch is located at 9th and Booth sts. I wonder what time frame this was? During my recollection (1942-1958) it was located at 4th and Jeffery Sts. And for all or most of this time the librarian was Mrs. Ridgeway who lived on Ward St between Union and 3rd St.That was the same block that Horace Mann and Dewey Schools were located.

It is not a coincidence to have plans to take Bush to different military bases. It is called security planning and it happens (before hand) everytime the President goes anywhere. The only conspiracy going on here is by the terrorists. Get real and quit calling the psychic network for information.

It is absolutely true that the predictions of Nostradamus may seem incorrect and far fetched to some but, remember, we only see the translated forms. If you have ever read any of the material transcribed, not translated, of Nostradamus, it is very eerie that someone in the 16th century could have seen so much that has seemed to already have occurred. I guess some people still believe that the "powers that be" still had no idea that something was not right on Tuesday morning in the USA. Maybe that's why the plan to take Bush to 2 diff Air Force bases was already in place before he left Florida. I guess that was just a coincidence.

Hi To All: I received this from a dear friend and thought it quite apropriate to let you all read it. Need I say more?

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.

Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, It was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes, Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technology, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. they are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American Dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New Your Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to he help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

Wear it proudly!!

bent, but not broken, we will survive this. hang your flag, bow your heads and keep faith. we will not succumb to evil, to cowards . those men who hijacked those planes believed they were to be martyrs and see the face of god that day, how surprised they must have been to meet the devil. Nostradamus's prophecy can give one chills, but is he a true prophet? don't be so sure. my father and many others served this country in wars to protect our freedoms. we will not let their sacrifices be for naught. Fellow Chesterians, and Americans alike, We have all witnessed the most horrific act of terrorism ever committed on American soil ! As we watch, over and over again, the chaos, and the destruction that this has brought about, there are also stories of survival. Many people are probably feeling the same way I am at this very moment,. " Revenge " Retalliation ". As I am sure that our government is doing everything in their power to find these perpetraters, and their appossite associates, these " Animals " I rather call them. They will Pay ! And they will pay dearly. So as I sit here and think about what is going on in our great country, I shed a tear, and think about all the people that lost their lives, and their families. Let's all stick together, and we can get through this , together !

Thank you.............

A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION..FOR THE FAMILIES WHO'S LIVES ARE CHANGED FOREVER. I can remember WWII as a child. I see people having the same reactions as our parents. Yesterday I was at a public place and a young women carrying a child heard several of us speaking. She did not know what had happened. When we told her, her remark was "BUT THIS IS AMERICAN, THESE THINGS CAN'T HAPPEN" But they did. I applaud Curt Weldon (formerly of Marcus Hook) for his remarks regarding the cuts in military spending and the conditions our service people must live in. It is a disgrace when service people have to get food stamps to survive. This is America..these are the people we are counting on to protect us..

The Armed Forces, the Police, The Firefighters, the EMTs, the Doctors and Nurses and the grief counselors -these people not only need our Prayers, they need our support to help them receive wages that are compatible with a normal life SO THAT THEY CAN DO THEIR JOBS. GOD BLESS YOU GUYS, GOD PROTECT US ALL FROM EVIL.

Well, the enevitble happened to us today. But no matter what, we are a union made up of the finest people in the world. Although this struck fear in us, we must remember one thing,No matter what happens, we all have to stick together. For our country, for ourselves, and for our families. My heart and prayers go out to each and every person who was directly affected by today's tragic events. I'm sure , as well as I'm standing here, that they will find who is responsilble, and they will be brought to justice.

To RI & GP

You both seem to remember quite a bit about the area around St. Anthony's & Franklin School. Would either of you know the name of the grocery store that was on the corner of 3rd & Franklin?

Marusco's & a taproom were on the corners of the 400 block & the Drug store & a grocery on the corners of the 300 block.

It was on the same side of the street as Seamans' but on the corner of Franklin St. This one is has me puzzeled.

GP: If you mean the store across from St. Anthony School, that was Elman's. I used to get my bubblegum baseball cards there. Sure wish I still had my Mickey Mantle card! I believe that was Sandra Elman's family. I think she married Harvey Burman. If you go to "Search" and enter "Elman", you'll get a little blurb on Elman's.

I have really enjoyed reading through all of the pages in this site. After reading through the Police page and Tragedies page, I have noticed that 2 of the 3 Officers killed in the line of duty in the city are not listed. I do know their names but I can not remember the dates of the events. One was Officer Michael Carter who was killed during a car stop in the early 70's I believe and the other was Officer Connie Hawkins who was killed when she responded to a 911 call in the 80's. Michael Carter's family was our next door neighbors and Connie served on the force with my brother. If anyone can fill in the blanks I would appreciate it.

Remember Miss Lutton-Miss Jones cooking. Miss Terwilliger (i think) for sewing. I remember John DeSantis stabbing me with a pencil. Mr. Graber was principal --then came Mr. Anskis. At the grad. dinner at the Franklin Fire Co. I have a picture of him. Bobby B. with a flower in his mouth. I remember the day Mr. Sharp took us to the Franklin Institute and someone wrote on the wall inside the heart. He lined us all up against the wall at the train station and gave it to us good.--as only he could do.

Thanks for the update on Bob Yurgatis. I wonder if he is still acting? I remember hanging out at Shoosters and Jimmy Linn used to broadcast from there. He had a Mother's Day contest that I entered. You had to write an essay on your Mother and what she meant to you, so I entered it. I won the contest and had to read my letter on the air right before mother's Day. My Mom was lying in bed at home listening to the program never dreaming that I had done this and when she heard me reading this essay, she almost fell out of bed. She is 86 and still talks about that. I love my Momma!

It was a little round white building with a drive in. Latter I worked at Littons while going to Chester High. Got out of school at 2:30 walked to Littons and worked 3 to 11 six days a week. Sometimes worked doubles on Fri. and Sat. nights. 90 cents an hr. the good old days ha ha ha.

I think his cousin's named is Kenny. Now that you mention it, I do remember that trip to Lenape. I can't remember what we did there, but, I remember going. There was so many Millers, I get them mixed up. Do you know if Ruth Ann Sloan is still alive? I wonder what ever happen to her. Did you know Massey Gibson? He was a little older then us, but, was in the same grade. I'm trying to rack my brain for other names. Do you remember when I got in an accident at school? Where Marty Johnson and I was messy around with a pointed stick and the stick stabbed me. I walked around for a half hour before I told Mr Vaul. Mr. Blazynski sprained his ankle jumping over that white coping that went around to school and Mr. Vaul took both of us to the hospital.LOL.

You are right, Seaman's did have the candy store across from St. Anthony's. Was originally Bruni's before Seaman's took over. Going further back, that is where old timers might remember one could buy a gallon of javelle water there. Today, it is called bleach. Remember a drug store on the corner of 3rd & Franklin. I'm not sure but the names Pearson's and Albanese comes to mind? Do they ring any bells? BTW Joe is my brother.

To: Herman Shooster Have many, many fond memories of the drive-in, from the early 50's to the early 60's. I memember the radio station live from inside the resturant, although most of my times were out in the drive-in. I remember the drag races out on the Conchester before it was finished. Of course Tom Tally had the baddest machine out there. A new reworked black '57 Chevy 2 door hardtop. Then there was Daddy Red riding around the lot in his home made (out of airplane drop tanks) all aluminum car. So many good memories. I remember caddying for Harry Shooster at Brandywine Country Club. I relish those years. So many good times & great people.. Best wishes, Mike..

Another song they played at the St James dances on a regular basis was "For All We Know...we may never meet again" I loved that song. I graduated from Dewey Mann in 1950. One of my favorite teachers was Miss Ferry. She taught history but was my home room teacher. She took our class to the opera and once to a Chinese Restauant in Philly. Someone cooerced Annis Glenn to eat a whole teaspoon of hot mustard and she almost choked to death. Miss Ferry got married at St. Anthony's to Mr. Platukis. We were all invited and had a blast. One of my funniest memories at Dewey Mann was the day a bunch of us were gathered in a huddle on the playground telling jokes....Kenny Miller, Marty Miller, Iris Howett, Annis Glenn, Midge Grayston, Marily Barnes, Barbara Vaul and others. Billie Lou Barnes wanted to hear what we were saying but we sent her away and she went inside and reported us to Mr. Vaul, the principal. He brought us all into the office and talked to us. All I could think of was that my Mother was going to kill me. The popularity books that we made up asking questions about who was the cutest, who was most popular, etc. were called "Slam Books". Robert Poremsky always got the "prettiest eyes". Fun Days!

Does anyone from Sun Village, St. James or Chester remember Robert yurgatis? He graduated from St. James in 1953 I think. I used to work for Queenie at the Armory Bowling Alley in Chester and that is where I met him and became good friends with him. He was a great bowler. Then he moved to Los Angelos and became a movie star taking the name of Robert Harlan. My husband, John(Marty)Marth and I followed his career on TV and in the movies but he sort of slipped out of sight. We thought we saw him in a commercial for an Alcohol Treatment Center in Washington State where we live a few years ago but couldn't find out for sure if it was him. It sure looked like him. Does anyone have any information on him? He was such a nice guy. Thanks

Jim M: have no idea what happened to anyone except for V.C. We both move to the suburbs after graduation from Dewey. Were friends thru high school, stayed friends for years later than as time would have it, separated for awhile..but for this wonderful box called a computer, we talk almost daily now. Although thousands of miles apart. It is amazing how when one gets to the age of 60 their thoughts return to simpler times.

I saw Costa when he and Horace came to visit me once their freshman year in collage. Isn't Costa's brother or cousin Kenny (can't remember now which) a pol. in the Parkside area of PA. I seem to remember a Martin Miller also.

I had our graduation picture recently to copy and send to VC put in such a great place, can't find it now. have a great pix of Billy Miller and Don Mallick. Some others from school will have do dig in some old boxes one of there days. I know I have my diploma somewhere and our graduation program. Have pix from Washington Cathedral when we went. Still have the Samsonite Luggage my parents bought for our trip. Are they ever heavy. one suitcase, one overnite case.

Do you remember the saftey trip to Lenape Park?

Do some of you remember, as a child the burning torches of the refineries? To me they seemed almost magical and beautiful in the dark. On Third street, near Highland Ave I remember seeing Trainer and it's refiners and tanks. To my Child's mind,it almost seemed to be some kind of futuristic scenerio!

Does anyone remember the big Flood of 1960? Ninth Avenue was flooded and Memorial Park's creeks turned into small rivers(at least I thought so!:)The flood occured durring the summer.

Does anyone remember Santa arriving in a HELICOPTER,to a department store,(maybe Sears)to the delight of children.:).I remember hearing about this but never attended the event:(

I guess one of my fondest memories of Chester was Linton's Restaurant. Many nights we spent there talking to Charlie & Phil P. and Mike E....Lost touch with all of them, but remember them always. The staff and the patrons were all great. We met a little boy at Linton's, his name was Clinton. Often wonder what happened to him. Heard he was into politics, not sure though. We, my sister, my cousin and a friend of ours spent many nights riding up and down 9th street, there was the Big Mo (Shusters to some)Lintons (of course) and the there was 7th & Crosby. Now there was a great little corner. Met alot of nice people there and then some that weren't so nice. Chester was a great place to go, I remember the Boyd and the State, it was only .50 to see a movie. Then, there was the Great Leopard Skating rink, lots of fond memories from there. Times sure have changed, the fun and the innocence is gone but the memories will always be with us.

To Fran Farrar If you look under Churches at the Bible Presbyterian Curch on 13th & Potter, that could be where you went to Bible School. I went to Bible School there myself as a child in the late 40's early 50's It was a 5 week school and ended with a trip on the Wilson Line To Riverview,so much fun. They gave out report cards like you talk about and with all different kinds of stickers on then and some were flags. Also red or blue ribbons depending on what they were won for(I think attandance).I still have 2 of my report cards from there. Hope this helps to bring back memories.

We also were sent home with large report cards decorated by BIG stickers!!One,i specifically remember being a flag!:) I'd love to know what denomination the church was possibly Methodist ect.... To RI You hit the nail on the head. Josie is my youngest brother. I really don't think you know me, but I remember your family. Four boys in your family? Your Dad had a shoe repair shop. My nephew is David DeSantis, son of my oldest brother Sam (nicknamed Zip, Class of 45). In fact I think it was Joe who had told me that David had a teacher in Mt. Laurel with your name. Just browsing through and noticed a note from Pete Krasowski. You say you were a car hope at the old Linton's restaurant...was wondering if anyone remembered that place. Spent most of my nights there back in the 60's. Actually met my husband there; he was the manager in early 65 after Mr. "D" was transfered. Do you remember any of the waitresses there? Agnes, Hannah, Grace? We gave them all a hard time.

George - too bad we were cut off in that thar chat room because I was about to tell ya' that me ma' were the purtiest thang ever hit that ole' Burley's. She met up wuf her last husband thar and were wuf him till the day he gave up that thar ghost (ghost been hanging around a long time). Thang the good lord, he didn't fight that thar ghost too long - but anyway he perspired - I mean expired in 1980. She tried to get her ole job back at Burleys but found out it were long closed and noboby to go there anyways - (even Whelan's were done long gone). For a long time she sat around wondering if she were still here. So she's a sittin' in the back hills of Kentucky just a pinnin' away wonderin' what ever happened to ole Burleys. There were a foot doctor had offices up above that Burleys - a little to the right of Burleys - just about cut off my big toe, all because of a ingrown toenail. Them doctors thar had a lot to learn about ingrown toenails (should have gone to Dr. DeProphetis). I'll never go back to Chester if I get a ingrown toenail again - I swore I never would and I have kept that promise - (one of the few I ever kept - don't believe in promises) - glory be to God. Still got my big toe tho - has served me well all these years - don't know what I woulda done wuffout it. Talk at ya' later.

Knew Caroline & Fran Latocha as a kid, knew Sonny (Chet) Ronso (3rd & Harwick?) Ed Rasza,(he worked at Tripleddi---as a kid I thought he was the pharmacist) There were the two Yotties.(across from the Lace Mill). Andy the older brother and Stan Jarasinski, Ray Kulis, John Trunt, Ray Kawalchuck (4th & Highland)Gene Howett, the Clendenning family from Highland avenue, Ed Novalita (lived across from the bowling ally),

Betty DiMayo (her father was the iceman I think)..Joe Samson, Lucinda Gruler, Milly Siefert, The Montgomery boys (can't remember their names) (all spelling of names is as I remember them being pronounced)

I think Chet Zubricki was the older Chet that I remembered. Was he a rather stocky built boy. If he's the one I think, on one Halloween he dressed as half woman and half man. What a great costume. The kids all dressed and hit all the 3rd street stores for goodies. Years later I remembered the costume and replicated it for one of my kids.

You said you were married 41 yrs. ago. Congrads,

TO: U.W. From some of your comments I must know you. I can remember my father once mention the Bald Head Nine gang. I don't anything about them or any of their members.

To: Jim M. From the unknown writer's comment I thought we might have walked to Dewey together. If you lived across from the school perhaps you know Jack Bomhoff.

Trying to remember all whom I might have walked to school with will be an impossible task. Here are some names. I can specifically remember walking with Chet Zubricki. Chet's parents had a grocery store next to Bombergers. Then Andrew Kryworka and Wayne Yohey. Other possibles are Stanley Kokoszka, Francis Latocha, Carol Latocha. Others that I can remember from Dewey include Horace Walker, Delores Kyler, Donald Brooks, Estes Lucas, Bradford Murray, Leigh Allvord, William Chocallo, Mike Kendus, Vivian Elks and Richard Snow. I know there were many others whose name I cannot remember so I would be grateful for some help.

Others from the West End area that I knew include Linda Casper, Joel Smith's brother Alabama (never knew his correct name), Bernie Chazin (Bernie's father had a tailor shop on 3rd street between Thurlow and Highland Ave., Bob Wiechecki, Ed Gebhardt (of the Daily Times, Herb Davis, Helen and her brother George Shahadi, Sonny Ronzo, Eddie Rzasa.

I remember Todds hardware, McMasters magazine store, Michaels Appliance all on 3rd street between Highland Ave and Hayes Street.

Does anyone remember the Carolina Inn that was on 4th & Booth streets before Fisher Tank?

ER..Ed Rumford...No Jim I don't think you walked with ER. Altho I did..But if memory serves me well, you would walk down to Kanieski's funeral home on third street and walked part of the way back with some of the kids from the So.Chester section. . Maybe it was Jimmy Filliaggi (boy did I kill that one) Another name, Lewis Johnson, Jimmy Jones.

just in case you drop in Eddy some of your underclass- gals thought you were pretty hot. Anyway that is what was written in one of those notebooks the girls passed around. Does anyone remember them. you would fold the first page in half with the right side going under, then you wrote questions, name, age, color eyes, hair, favorite everyting, etc. for the length of the two sides. when you opened it you first wrote ans. on the one side, flipped the 2nd questions over and wrote the ans. on the second half of the answer page. Gosh we knew everyones secrets after that..Even the guys filled them out. Someone must still have one around.

Some other doctors from Chester...Dr. Dunn, MD..Dr. Frances, dentist Dr. Mielcarek, Dentist,(I think he lived on 10th and Highland or his parents did afew houses up from Rez School) I think Dr. Leon Mielcarek is his son.. Dr. John Ruffini (raised on 7th Street,- St. Anthony's area- was a pharmacist for several years, then a MD practicing in Ridley until his retirement afew years ago.) Dr. Lebischeck - his office was on 9th St. across from Sacred Heart Hospital.

There were the Quatras (funeral home) Joe and Jerry.

On Morton Ave. between 5th St and 9th...there was Ripers Grill, and a tailor shop near 9th called Sorrentino's. I Remember having TM's with 3/4" waist and low belt hooks made on 3rd street. Pegged pants were the rage in my day -even for girls. Low cut wranglers came in about that time. I can remember a kid from the neighborhood out of CHS earlier than usual one day. he said he had gotten suspended for wearing the new jeans. This particular pair was the hip huggers. He wore them without a belt. That was Larry S. for yea.

To Dave Babiciki: Dave are you kin to the Babiciki's at 10th & Highland Ave. I went all thru Rez & St. James with John & his older brother Eddie was a year ahead of us. John went to Austin, TX a few years after I came to Charlotte. I haven't seen John in over 20 years, but Eddie stopped in one night coming from John's about 8 years ago. I understand Eddie has since died. I grew up in the area until 1968 & the transfer to Charlotte. Graduated St. James in '57. Did Joe Bell's mom & dad have a store at 9th & Clover Lane. I knew Joe well, if it's the same one. He did live on Highland around 2nd St. I think their store was a gift shop or something like that.

To RI No, it's not GP. But you are almost correct about where we lived. It was on the other side of the street. You probably don't know me but knew one of my brothers. Believe my sister was in the same class as your brother, Anthony. That's how it was in Chester, everyone in the neighborhood knew each other. That's not the case in the suburbs where you hardly know or even see much of the neighbors. It was a different time. Just like you & so many others, my wedding reception was also held at the Abruzzi Club & Muscella took the pictures. It only took 8 months to get them but it was well worth it because they always did an excellent job. Did you or one of your brothers teach in New Jersey? My nephew in Mt. Laurel had a teacher with the same last name as yours. I just found out about this site yesterday & was up until 6 AM this morning reading the posts. They bring back so many good memories.

John Ka-Chew-Bun (sorry, about the spelling John-if your out there) Didn't your family own a candy store/Bakery on third street a block from St. Mary's Ukr. Orthodox Church. People that worked at Tripleddis' Ed Joan 1950-54?

Remember the ""Lemon Fosphates"" I still have the tall smoked glasses that they gave out when you bought one. The Vanilla Cokes were my favorite -especially when a squirt of Chocolate was added for good measure. How about Buddy's hoagies people. One block south of Dewey School. And the candy store across the street that sold the little red boxes with the blue Indian head on filled with pumpkin seeds.

Yes Jimmy I knew Horace. Who in that time didn't. After we move out of Chester and Horace went off to Mich. State Costa, Horace and their friend from col. Lenny Lipman came to visit me in the suburbs their freshman year. I think Costa had just gotten a car. That was the last time I saw Horace. He did call me afew years later when his Mom told him that my father had died. Did you know that he was a fantastic artist besides being a great basketball player.

Anyone remember your parents talking about the "Bald Headed Niners" Anyone old enough to know any of them.

Never paid for a "punk". Use to get mine free for the picking in the swamp land between Highland & Engle street next to the railroad tracks between 4th street & the Park. Wish I had a place like that here in North Carolina to keep these sceetters away. They worked great!!

We all know the value of the dollar has eroded considerably over the past 50 years or so, but this is ridiculous. On a Sunday afternoon, way back when (late 40's actually) we used to ride the bus to downtown Chester from the 24th & Edgemont area, take in a movie (usually at the State)and then treat ourselves to a Pepsi and an ice cream cone at Angie's Market (24th and Upland Sts.) all for the grand total of $0.27. Consider the following.............

Bus fare = .05 (two could ride one way for a nickel on Sundays)

Theater admission = .12

Pepsi (ice cold) = .05

Ice cream (Potts) = .05

Compare that with a similar outing today!

To unknown writer. I remember the lady who sold the apple taffys but unsure who she was. With the names that you are coming up with, I have totally forgotten. But, remember them after you mention their names. Thank you. I was sadden to hear, that Horach Walker died. I don't know if you knew him, but, he used to play basketball on the courts at Horach-Mann school. He use to help all the younger kids and teach them how to make different shots. He was a great human being.

TO: Betty Jo Marvel Yes, I do remember Dr. Crowther and his house calls. He was our family physician for years and somehow related to my mother. When I was 6 years old I was very sick for a few days. Dr. Crowther came to the house and diagnosed me with acute appendicitis. Told my parents to rush me to the hospital immediately for an emergency appendectomy. I suppose you could say he saved my life!

While living in Chester years ago, one didn't have to go too far to get what was needed. Churches, Schools, Stores, Entertainment, all within walking distance. Carnivals on blocked streets, Church festivals. The Apollo theater, 3 times a week, a bargain at 13 cents. Third Street was a busy street with sailors, merchant marines etc. looking for some fun while on liberty. Plenty of taprooms on our block. Walio's, Chevralotti's, The Lido Cafe, Sanbe's. There was Sam's pool room, Kaiser's pool room, Browne's department store, Ieradi's shoe repair, DeMeglio's, Sanbe's & Marusco's grocery stores, Gianpalmi's Barber shop, Fasano's Barber shop, Buemi's bakery, Zappala's Real Estate, Zommick Real Estate, Marrone's Restaurant, Mancini's Tailor shop, DeFuria's Bank. Next block was Albanesse's Drug store, St Anthony's Church, Pileggi Builders, Dilucido's Bar, Mazza's Beauty shop. On the corner of 3rd & Parker was Minnie's Dry Goods where clothes were bought on the book.(The honor system, no charge plates in those days)Can't forget the Greek bakery, where each night the smell of fresh baked ITALIAN bread made one run to buy it still warm from the oven. The Abruzzi-Molise Club where many a wedding reception was held. A few blocks away was Muscella's Photography Studio.(Think they did every Italian wedding in Chester), Night Owl Brothers, Balestieri's Market, On Pusey Street, Columbus Center, where Frankie Laine & Teresa Brewer performed, also the scene of many wedding receptions. Every need was met within a few blocks. Didn't need a car way back then. But in case you did the Southern Penn bus stopped at every other corner. Uptown, there was Speares, Weinbergs, Tollins, McCrory's, Lou Belles, Becks, Triplex, Kinneys shoe stores, Adams, Murrays men shops, Rodgers, Lincoln's, The Palm Gardens, Freed's, Ches-Penn 5 & 10, Woolworth, Silvers, Spencers Stationery, Stotters, Sears, Sterns, Montgomery Ward. OLD CHESTER,PA? It WAS a GOOD OLD CHESTER, PA

Yes Joe's parents did walk in on afew of the party kissers. I have forgotten who spun the bottle and it came to me, but I do remember going into that great big closet for the big smooch and it never happened. We both looked at one another as I recall and started laughing. Had to stay in there for awhile tho to make it look good.

Jimmy M., do you remember the lady on 3rd street that sold the apple taffys. Just down from the Musical bar but on the other side of the street. They would sit on her window sill as we all walked to school. Was it Jimmy F. mom.

Somemore names...Marylou Pilkala, Billylou Barnes, Darlene Malinowski(can't remember if she went to Dewey or St. Hedwigs) Barbara Huss (lived on second street south of Highland) Marcella, Jean Drylak, Larry Sulecki (Dec.) (his dad was the baker at the 2nd st. bakery) Len Kulis, Marsha Mashuda, Janice Duman (class of 52 or 53) Wanda and Val Tryzak...give me time more will come. What were the two sisters names from Bunting Street that sang on the Paul Whitman show.

Remember Jeans gift shop on 3rd street, where special cards and gifts were bought. Owners were Jean and Frank Draper. Can't remember what their sons name was.

do you remember the Minstrels at St. Hedwigs and the yearly carnival fair that they held. They also had great fairs at the Ukrainian Hall on second street. My brother won a duck there one year. Everything was so simple then, even the rewards for winning a spin. Must have been if they gave a duck as a prize.

Stress brothers Hardware was on 3rd across from the West End Bowling Ally and Chicos dad owned the bar across from Stress brothers. Mr. Tumbs (Mr. Konakevich-one of the owners)was such a nice man. We called him "Mr. Tumbs" because he was always putting Tumbs in his mouth. Sad that his son Edmond died so young. I can almost see him hollaring down to me from the roof of the Chester YMCA.

Do you remember the troop trains going off to the Korean War riding down 2nd street and up highland avenue. Terry gave the boys on the trucks candy and cigaretts. Or picking up coal from the railroad along front street for our stoves. Ahh, once a boxcar filled with scott toilet paper turned over as it rolled north to Chester City and the whole neighborhood was well stocked. I forget the name of the old man that came around on the huckster truck, and the old water ice man with his seven different flavors and my favorite rainbow.

Italian section, -The DeJohn sisters, Julia and Dukes and didn't they have a brother Pasqule. Steve Culetta and Martha Frisby lived in that area Costa and Kenny Miller..

Chester was really a deverse city, had the Irish section, Polish, Ukranian, Italian,Greek, etc. each neighborhood was within its own and all of the memories differ depending where you came from in the wonderful town called Chester. Yet somewhere they all come together and provide so many of us with fantastic memories.

Tony Capasso,Joe Caccia.I could name plenty more but would bore you.Do you remember my brother Jim? He formed a country and bluegrass band and played the tristate area for many years before he passed away in 1997.Any country fans out there every see or hear the Sandy Ridge Boys in the local bars? What a great web site ! I'm not from Chester but we went there often as kids. I was raised in Swarthmorewood, which is between Chester and Swarthmore. My dad worked for Scott Paper Co. for 35 years and I worked there in the summer of '67 before I went into the Army. My dad brought hoagies home from Stacky's, on occasion but we ususlly got our hoagies and cheese steaks from Joe Di Matteo's (sp) on Fairview Rd in Swarthmore. We took the bus often into Chester to shop and I went there with my dad to Pep Boys. I noticed a link to the Springhaven Golf Club and I used to caddie there in the mid 60's as a kid. My son is southern born and raised and he is a Phila. hoagie nut like all of us and when I visit up there, my sister always has hoagies and cheese stakes waiting for us. I also played CYO basketball at St James H.S. gym and some of my friends were raised in Chester. Again ..Great site and good memories. Marty..Atlanta, Ga, 30 years.

Hey Pat McFadden: Thanks for noticing the photo albums at the Chester Chat room. All I really wanted to do was start a place to chat and look what I got, a full blown community where people can post their pictures etc etc. It sure is a cool chat room, I don't want it to detract from what you are all doing here so I haven't made a big thing about some of the features. Over 80 people have signed up in the chat room but I very seldom see anyone there. Hopefully it will grow in popularity. I have been there when several people have come "in" and started to "talk" and it turns out that they were childhood friends or neighbors, it's sure fun to watch it all happen. So if anyone wants to ADD to the fun of THIS web site, click on http://communities.msn.com/ChesterChat/_whatsnew.msnw and find out what we're talking about,,,,,,,,,George

To Unknown Writer: I do recall going to a party at Joe's house. Spin the bottle may have been on the menu. The only other thing I can remember about it is his parents walking in on a few of us.

I am drawing a complete blank on the halloween parties at the Lyric.

I recall George Wright, seem to remember that he had a brother but cannot remember any name. I do remember Joel Smith. I understand that he later managed or owned the Trainer Appliance.

I also remember Chet, Bob and Gregory Prygon who were also friends and lived a couple of doors away from Joe.

I remember a candy/ice cream store a few stores away from the old American Store. It began with an L but I don't know how to spell it. Next to Martha Shop?

Do you know/remember Joe Miller who lived next door to Peggy?

Keep me guessing

To: George Malick - I just went to your Photo Album section and this is the most fascinating area of your site - and I don't think our friends are aware of it yet. You can post your picture, your entire family's photos - anything you want. This is awesome. Never before have people our age been able to do this. I think you should make this a more prominent area - everyone wonders what so-and-so looks like today. Only 3 people have taken advantage of this opportunity (one being George) and this should really grow by leaps and bounds - over tall buildings - it's not a bird, or a plan - its SUPERMAN.

To GP: Your memory is sharp. I'm Bob and how did you ever remember my brother's nickname? Third street was a great place in which to grow up. It may have been the "wrong side of the tracks" but we were a closeknit group and we had our share of fun and experiences. Franklin School was extremely progressive. We had home ec, wood shop, a library, a gym, and an auditorium when those were only dreams for other school districts. Everything we needed was within two blocks of my house. We walked the streets all over town until midnight without a shred of fear.

To Pat, from Pat - The first one is the one I meant too - and I'm almost certain it was Nat King Cole. Pat, we are from the same generation - maybe a little older than the other "youngsters" on this Board, but 5 years made a BIG difference in music - ours (the romantic era) was the best. I think that may be why the ones our age and slightly older produced the most children this country has known. So, we can blame the population explosion on the music!!! And, I'm so glad Betty came up with "Near You" - it was a comfortable jitterbug (I think it gave us more time to look at each other). He-He

To the person who told me the names of the other people that was in the class of '54' at Dewey-Mann, thank you for bringing back so many memories of names that I forgot. Why didn't you give your name or e-mail address? I went to Horace-Mann from 1st. grade thru 6th. grade and then Dewey-Mann 7th.& 8th.. I would like to find out if the people whose names you reminded me of are still around. Yes, I was there when all the teachers were there that you mentioned. My home room teacher was named Mr. Earl Blazynski. Do you know if he is still living?? Did you go to Dewey in '54'? We use to call Mrs. Mcginnis, the science teacher, "gaylord ginnis, the mad scientist." They was the greatest days of my life. The trip to Wasington D.C. was alot of fun. I was on the all-boy bus with Mr. Blaznski and John J. Vaul. I remember smoking in the back of the bus and Mr Vaul came back and asked who was smoking and we all said nobody, while smoke was pouring out of the bus windows.(HA-Ha) If you don't want to give your name to the public, send me an e-mail. Mark it personal so I will know its you.

To John Ellis. Are you the same John Ellis that had that beat up Plymonth that we use to ride around in at Chester Park when I had a girl friend whose name was Joanne Mcalvar?(spelled??)

It just dawned on me that there were two songs entitled "Goodnight Sweetheart" - The one I'm referring to at the end of St. James dance, went - Goodnight sweetheart, till me meet tomorrow, goodnight sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow, etc. The other verson was - Goodnight sweetheart, well it's time to go, goodnight sweetheart, (forget what's next) - but they are two completely different songs - two different melodies, two different tempos - maybe that's the confusion because I do remember groups singing the second version.

While glancing through the newstand, I was suddenly reminded that because today is labor dayit would be a great time to thank all the men and women (our parents) who labored in the area factories in the 20's through the 60's Chester was a major industrial city With places like Sun Ship, Scott Paper, Penn Steel, Atlantic Steel, Ford Moter Coand many Textile and chemical Companies. These are the great people that made Chester the wonderful city we all remember. Everyone have a great Labor Day

to Jim Minshall: lets see, others in the class of 54 were, Barbara Macielag, Zoll Collins, Romaine Coppa, Billy Miller, Bill Myers, V. Corbett, Helen Wallace, I think Marlene Scott was Maylene Scott, Donald Malick, Woody Gebhart, MaryAnn Pastuzek, Mike Pastuzek. Jackie Burman (didn't her family own a little grocery store on 2nd Street across from Sacred Heart Church), Bing Williams, Frank Kaminski, Carole Latocha, Carole Guzek, Carolyn LaShett, John Kokoszka .. gosh who else. Did you go to Dewey thru grade school or came over from Clayton? Do you remember when chief half town first came on tv and came to a assembly at Dewey with his son -who wooda thought he would have done his show for all those years after? Or when the yo-yo was big and several oriental guys representing a yo-yo manufacture came to the play ground and taught the kids how to do the walking dog, baby in a cradle, etc. then signed some up for a contest. And how about the marble contest on the school ground near the great big tree between both schools. Were you there when Mrs. Milky, Mrs. Plumber, Mrs, Knox, Ms. Shaffer, Mrs. & Mrs. Phillips taught. Also do you remember when the boys took classes in cooking and the girls went down to shop and learned how to make a sewing box. Remember the art classes and making the decorations for the windows around the schools. Snack time was served in grade school by Mrs. Fitzsimmons. Remember she would sit there in her chair and make sure the girls were orderly while going to and from the wash room. Did she monitor the boys too. and then she sold those great snacks, chocolate covered gram crackers with marshmellow in side for either 3cents or a nickle. Memories.. Washington was the class trip if I recall.

Ed R. did you live on highland between 2nd and 3rd and hang with Joe Bell. on 3rd and highland there was the American Store, Sherwoods seafood house. Remember the great donuts from Laskevichs (forgive the spelling if incorrect) on 2nd and Highland. I think it was "Benny's" Bakery.

Jimmy Linns teen nite club only lasted a short while but was fun. Then I believe he moved on to a TV show in Wilmington similar to American Bandstand. Gosh the teen heart trob way back then locally was Dick Lee. Shoosters was a hang out and the older guys that drove would go down to the new highway being built (Rt.322 and drag race) I guess the "Fonzy" group did that.

* Virus All-Clear *

Folks - my apologies to any of you who received an email from me today.

If you have not already, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN THE ATTACHMENT. I SENT NO EMAILS OUT EARLIER TODAY (Sunday) ON MY OWN.

It was a virus and if you got as far as attempting to open it, I'm afraid you're infected now too. Better run some anti-virus software and get your system cleaned out.

My sincerest apologies for the inconvenience - but I'm happy to report that I seem to be all clear now.

Hi Betty and Pattidi - "The Spaniels" was after my time (CHS '50), but the best recording of "Goodnight Sweetheart" and the one played at our St. James dances was by Nat King Cole - you have heard of him, Betty, I'm sure. His vocals and instrumentals are one of the reasons our generation was, I think, the "romance" generation. And Pattidi - you are right, it was "Near You". The floor would be crowded with the best jitterbugs in the country. Don't you agree? To go back for just one more night would be wonderful. That's what we got "high" on - not drugs, not sex, just the natural teenage communication between male and female.

'Goodnight Sweetheart' was recorded by The Spaniel's 1954/1955.

Two brothers from Aston, Pa opened Laspada's Original hoagie shop in Dunedin, Florida... I was very surprised to see the name'Laspada's' on the sign. They told me they bought the name and they have the rolls flown down daily from Philly. Not the same as home but not bad!

I'm a happy woman. I missed the first get together because I didn't find John's wonderful site until after it was over.

I will be at the next one if at all possible. So far so good.

Our Fall "OldChesterPa.com Lunch Get-Together" is *tentatively* scheduled for Saturday afternoon September 15 (?) at the Edgmont Diner.

Spread the word. I know several people that still live in Chester, but don't have computers. They would love this reunion.

To: Pete Krasowski I think the hogie shop you are referring to at 9th & Keystone was Fletchers. Jack Fletcher owned it & his sandwichs were great. Up stairs was Johnson's Drug store where I used to get foutain cherry cokes. I grew up in the neighborhood.

Hello Pattidi - You win! It was "Goodnight Sweetheart" - who was the artist? Weren't those dances the best? Everyone hated to see the night end - and I think they were only 2-3 hours long, but they seem to last forever - the anticipation of maybe the boy you longed to dance with would ask you to dance - do you remember? Now - what was the favorite jitterbug song - was it (sounds corny today - but it had the right beat) "Heartaches"?

WoW.......what a great site and filled with so many old memories it boggles the mind...thought I'd share a few of mine before my senior moments kick in and I forget to share.!! I was born in Chester back in 1941 on Sunnyside Avenue and lived in the 1st ward on E 24th Street until 1950..... My memories are eclectic so bear with me as I try to arrange then into some kinda order....Have some very fond memories growing up on 24th street, practically lived with Doc and Bea Beatty the local veternarian just loved all the animals..skipping on down memory lane there were...chocolate cokes at Koffs drug store, penny candy at Angies Market..5 cent movies called Joy Hour at the Presbyterian church on Friday nights..going to Chester park for band concerts and spring water..having picnics on Stevenson's estate on Chestnut St (now Belvedere nursing home)..lots of fun in summer at Wetherill playground playing box hockey (do they still have that game?) doing crafts..sledding down the ramp at Bond Bakery in the winter..ahhhh and counting cars from our front porch as a game with my brother and sister I always lost because I would pick some bright color and you know they only had dark color cars in those days....my brother still laughs at my gullibilty..Oh and do any of you remember Ralph Greico delivering wonderful cakes and pies right to the door.......ooh those were the good ole days.. and before I go ..a question for all of you....are there any kids from Miss Springer's kindergarden still out there from 1945-46...a few of the names I recall are..Stella Baziotis,Joanie MacIntire,Diana Lynch. Mickey Mason,Richard Curl,Janie Bartholmew, Elaine(?) DeProphetis,Marilyn Mudrick,Vincent Shields,Steve(?)Owens,I have the class picture just fuzzy on the correct names after all these years......would love to know how many still alive and well ..... Again thanks for creating such a wonderful hometown site........

I am age 54, I travel from home here in New Jersey to Chester only to Phil and Jim's to get hoagie's or Cheese Steaks. I have been going to (gus) place for the last 30 years. Some of the other good hoagie place back in the 50's and 60's were, Cal's on west 3rd street, and sure Stackeys, my father used to take us to Decosanza back about 1958. There used to be a good place on 9th andkeystone street across from the old Penn Friut Store I dont remember that name but they sold their business to Vesiouvo's Pizza. Also for the record, I was a Car Hop at the old Linton's Restr. during the summer of 1964. Hey Dave Babacki. email me please.
