I clearly remember The day WWII ended. Everyone who lived in Buckman Village was on the streets singing, laughing and dancing with the anticipation of not only the return of the men in our family and those of our neighbors, but the realization that we no longer had to live in fear and could now look forward to a normal and hopefully long life.

When the memorial was constructed in BV for our lost service men, many times I would stand and look at it, as we all did, and feel much sorrow for those who gave their lives so that we could continue to live. I felt particularly sorry for the McGinn family who lost their son and brother James in that war. I hope that memorial is preserved forever in a sacred location. I have a picture of it though, which I've always kept.

With what is going on in Iraq right now, and the hopes that our service men and women arrive home safely, it brings back a memory of mine in Chester. I remember vividly the day the peace treaty was signed with Vietnamn and all the church bells rang that evening. I was walking home from work at Rez's Rectory and the bells were pealing, and sent chills right through me.

I also grew up in Chester. I have a lot of memories from there that I will never forget.I can remeber the love that was generated from house to house. I can never remember a day of doing without. My mother was also your mother, and your mother was mine. Everone was to be respected.I can remember noone doing without.I hate it so much that the city is in the shape that it is in. Although, some of the people has accepted things like they are I cannot. The people need more to look forward to. I believe that love can conquer any problems.I know that love bought me through alot. I also can remember so bad things that happened, I was taught that there is a reason for everything that happens. Why don't we find out why? A lot of my friends are dead. WHY/

Deaf One:

I never forgot Charity, just that yesterday wasn't Wed, today is, and I gotta finish off work today before a long weekend.

I did forget the fire truck, but yes, it was really cool and a BIG treat to ride that.

I never was a parishioner at OLC, but they had some really nice people there.

I also forgot that the fair was in June.

Deaf One, you refreshed my soggy memory - tanks and have a good one.

Nothing better than going to the Chester Hospital Fiar and having a Lemon stick. I think my mom would buy us one because it would last all night. Then we would get an apple taffy (That hard candy, that would seem like it broke your teeth to get through to the apple) to take home with us. I loved the smell of the fair and still can remember it in my mind and all the good times we would have there.

To hgc / pmc 59:

Thanks for that input on WKBS TV. I never knew that one. The Simon & Garfunkel tune, right?

I was thinking the Hy Lit TV Show on Saturday nights. Yeah, I saw on the web page for WPEN http://www.wpen.com that Bill Webber, good old Wee Willie (!) is there also, along with Ed Hurst. Man, that is a great line up!

Anywho, the way I remember it, Hy's TV going off was with the Diana Ross tune. Saturday on WKBS used to be great for me in the 60's grammer school days. 5 PM had wrestling, then I know there was Hy Lit in there, and then a cool science fiction or monster movie.

That was one great thing abut the Delaware Valley then - we had some great music! From Todd Rundgren's Nazz to the Delfonics, it was all real and good.

To: Jocko Thanks to you also for acknowledging the very important fact that we want our children to have as many as possible of the same good memories we older Chesterites have.

To deprive our children of "good memories" is like saying we didn't love them at all, and "hey, kid, face the facts, this is the way it was, there ain't no good memories for you - because I ain't got none to share. Good luck, kid, because I don't care about your good memories. All I care about is how I was hurt -and let me tell you about that -'cause it makes me feel better, and I want you to remember how I was hurt, never forget how your mamma was hurt." And, kids never do forget.

Man's inhumanity to man is one thing; but man's inhumanity to his children, is quite another. As long as the future and happiness of your children exists in survival of living in the same country as people from other races, creeds and religious beliefs, then stablize their future by teaching them respect for the creeds established by America. Then, and only then, will your children receive the same respect and honor that they too deserve, because they are, each and every one of them, an important part of what makes America the greatest country on earth. Then, perhaps your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will have the best and happiest memories which will include YOU as being one of the most important contributors to their memory. Look in your child's eyes and see what's in there. I hope it's a good future, not only for you and them but for America as being wholesome, loving and caring for each other. Being loving and giving feels so much better than hatred and bitterness.

AND, if you dig a little deeper, you will find that Chester, Pennsylvania, is one of the most historic cities in the country - Philadelphia comes in second, compared to Chester. But then, even Plymouth Rock has taken on a different look and moved a bit.

Laurie, your post has got to be one of the most exceptional and acceptable this site has encountered in a long time. Short, but ever so sweet and filled with (even tho' short) understanding of not only Chester's history but the goodness of mankind. If only today's posters could comprehend competely what Laurie is trying to say.

Incidently, Laurie, "Laurie" has always been one of my favorite names - you have given me another reason to like that name even more. I don't know how old you are, but I'd love to have you as a daughter.

Jack, I don't wonder why my back hurts today because of those games we played. And we didn't have a weight problem back then either cause we were always outside playing games. The editor can say anything he/she choses but the folks that were around during the riots know what happened and why.

Hello all! It's that time of year again where I am outside with my son and the neiborhood children trying to bring back the good old days of the west end of chester and all of the games we played. Last year I was on here writing about kick the can, release, and caughty caught caught. Games we use to play as children. I was asking for some rules last year (getting old and can't remember them all) my son happened to find the rules to kick the can on the internet (cartoon network.com)Can someone help me out with the caughty game. I know it is simular to Release as one person is it and you have to catch everyone and put them in the home base.(during that time another person can tag the base and release them) I am thinking that in caughty, once you catch a person, they are now on your team untill everyone is caught. Anyone with a better memory than me, please write back. And for everyone, I sure hope I brought back some good memories of the games we always played. And Kate, also remember horse and a few other games. boy did we make up some games or at least stayed active with them, whoever made them up.

mary you are so right! The editor is also lived directly across the street 1943 53 from CHS it was a shame but I can t remember anything about blaming the non. whites for the fire. Also when I was raising my family 5 3 boys 2 girls had to move from HIGHLAND GARDENS because of a certain group of non whites that certainly did nt have Grass ROOTS as did many of my fellow non white class mates when I attended CHS in the 50 `s. also went to Franklin during WW2 Many of us were so called LATCH KEY KIDS because both our parents worked to support the war effort..We alldid`t go bad because of this. I know this is not a political forum but I have to just express my opinion for I cherish the GOOD OLD DAYS and am sorry that my children did`t have the opertunity to do the same Sorry the older ones did

Has anyone come across a jukebox that plays forty five records? There was a pizza shop in Chester next to the old John Doggie's shop (before they moved) that had a juke box with forty five records. Is Georgie Woods still around from WDAS?

One thing I remember while living in Chester was listening to Louise Williams on WDAS AM. My mother would fix a large breakfast before we went to church, but the radio would be tuned to Louise Williams listening to her Gospel Music broadcast. Even today, my parents have a large breakfast on Sunday and continue to listen to Louise Williams.

To Brian, many of the houses are in bad shape because many of the homeowners sold their homes. When the new owners bought those homes, they rented these homes without caring about the tenants occupying the premises. 90% of the problem with these homes should be blamed on the tenants. 10% should be blamed on the landlord. Not all renters and land lords are bad; but when a tenant destroys property and the landlord allows this to take place, it causes the property value to go down. Also, ordinances should be enforced to ensure that trash should not be dumped in the street destroying the property value.

Lucy, A lot of whites did move because non-whites moved in the area but they also took over the low income housing and tore everything up, remember they even burned down the high school*, a lot of the blacks came up from the South and instilled rioting into the peaeful blacks that lived in Chester. Make no mistake it was a race war but not by all the blacks that lived in Chester. They wanted it and got it along with the slum conditions that the whites did not have, the drugs and shootings are there almost everyday, just read the paper. Why did the whites leave? We had too or face the danger that existed and still does.

[*Editor's note: My research has not found this to be the cause of the fire that destroyed Chester High School. There were several possible causes but a definite cause has never been established.]

I remember when we were kids. (Billy Hess, Danny and Billy Wojs, Jerry Crowley, Jack Kershinski, Norman Steen, Billy Navin, Chuckie Green, Sam Siefert, Boby Harris, Jolly Nolan, Gary and Fox Sheerer, The Snarr boys, The Redden's, Steve Chambers, Kevin Carpenter, Ray Carpen, Kenny Wiechert, Ronny and Terry Navin), I know I forgot some names, We would play basketball from morning until midnight behind the McCaffery community building after they installed the lights. Old man Nick would be yelling out his window "You kids better get the hell out of there before I come out and kick some ass." We use to ignore him and he would try to sneak up on us and we would run like hell. He was pretty quick for an old guy. Then he would come over during the day and try to get us to tell him who was out there last night. We would always say we didn't know. He would then give us the evil eye and tell us if he found out he was going to kick somebody's ass. They put a timer on the lights to shut them off at 10pm so we played in the dark. Now looking back we probably kept that whole row awake many a nights. Sorry neighbors for that. We never got tired.

Hi all , nice site! Shame Chester went downhill , at least we got archives right? We can sit in front of our computers talking about the old days and kind of ignore the fact that people are probably od'ing in your old houses. For all you non blacks whining about how it all went so bad , well let me let you in on a little secret, its your fault, and your parents fault for being racist in the very beginning. At one point it was prob. all white, then a few non-whites came, then some more, but the racist whites said , woa i dont want to live next to these black people, let's move outta here. Their houses went up for sale , and the very people they didnt want to live near bought em. Im sure they probably sold cheap too just to get away. ...

The last time I heard Al Alberts is still around. Once his TV childrens show went off the air he moved to Cape May Beach, NJ for several years and recorded "On the Way to Cape May" Told recently that he moved to FL. He and Stella are missed in NJ. His sons did have a recording studio in Chester at one time, do not know if it is still open.

On Aug 10, 2002 Al Alberts (The Four Aces) turned 80.

I have a suggestion. Rather than debating the intended purpose of this forum (Chester today vs Chester of old) or feeling compelled to respond to posts that reflect racial overtones, lets all just realize this: Whether someone comes here to complain about what happened to Chester (from their perspective) or to tell a nice story like Mr. Garvey, we all come here because we have a bond. Some of us have only good memories, some may have ugly ones. The thing to remember is that 20+ years later we are all here, on a website dedicated to the City of Chester. Love it or hate it, the city is a part of us and we all can and should be able to come here and share that bond. Lets try to make this a win-win situation. For those of you who had ugly experiences, think about the fact the despite those experiences, you feel good in 2003 coming to this web site and participating in discussions about Chester. The other people here are not the ones responsible for your bad times. Lets just focus on what draws us back to this website to share our thoughts. It is the City of Chester and our experiences (good and bad). That to me says it all....we are part of the Chester experience and we share that common bond, black or white, East End or West End, loved it or hated it.

I haven't visited this page for some time and i am very upset to see what is going on here. Are we not adults?come on people--color is only that--color.We are all still humans and the same color of blood runs thru all of us.Yes,there are bad white people out there as well as black.I teach my kids that we are all the same.We all have 2 feet,2 legs,2 arms,2 eyes --sometimes our skin is different but we all cry the same tears and feel the same pains.Chester has alot of GREAT memories for me that my kids will never experience and that makes me sad.I try to make new memories for them now by telling them how it was when i grew up in Chester and for me that's what keeps chester alive--and this web page.Come on people---build chester back up to the great city she is known for.Stop selling her short--Thanxs

Society is racist as a whole, where are living? So why shouldn't it show up on a web-site about Chester. Whites moved out because blacks moved in, isn't that racism? Be for real, what do you think was going to happen after the older folks stopped posting.

Flashback:

young black men lynched for looking at a white woman, 3 young black girls killed in a church bombing, Kent State students killed during a war protest, it was the 60's, it was nationwide. I am sorry that happened to you. It must have been horrible. "The times they are a changing" We were all witness to a societal re-structuring, but by retaining any anger we only hurt ourselves, and like it or not that change had to come. A civil war was fought to bring about that change. It took another hundred years to begin to implement and we have made mistakes along the way on both sides. Chester is only an example of that change. We can't go on as a society blaming the other side. We must move forward. Together.

This site has been a blessing for many old and dear friends to reconnect, to remember, and honor the past. Chester today, is what it is, partly because of it's past. That only means there is some good, and some bad with a lot of mis-understanding mixed in. I hold out hope for Chester, as I hold out hope for us all as a society.

FLASHBACK 1966, my first car, riding down the conchester, stopped at the light on Flower St, out rang a shot from the black project where they were rioting and it went through my windshield and out the side window, just missing me. Chester has all sorts of memories for all of us.

lets put the shoe on a possitive foot. I can remember growing up on booth Street in the 70's 1007 Booth Street to be exact. It was a treat to own a bike. With 6 kids in a 3 bedroom row home, hey we were not rich. Well my pop a hard working man bought my brother Matt ( a great kid ) a Brand New Huffy boy that bike was sharp and he loved it. Matt did not have that bike 1 day when rideing it down Booth Street some olders kids decided to make it thier own. As they attempted to steel it Matt got punch and kicked, he grabbed onto the sissybay with both hands and would not let go, he was being pulled down the street trying like hell to keep that bike. A MAN in Ginos watching this does his color matter nor does the color of the boys matter. Well he was a Black Man and a Good man. He watched this little boy fight for his bike the best he could untill he could hold no more. Well this Man got into his car and chased the boys down and retreaved my brothers Bike. I can remember him pulling up at our house not knowing where we lived but asking people. My father went out and met this Man , My brother who had not stopped crying was now ear to ear smiles. MY father shook that mans hand and thanked him for doing what he had done. Then to thank him my father walked side by side over to Brownies bar and bought the man a six pack of Beer for being so nice. I learn one thing that day and that is that thier are good people in this world. I love this city I always will love chester. I tell people proud when they ask me where I am from I tell them Chester. Not where I live I live in Trainer. However I am From Chester.

wow....believe it or not there are children growing up in Chester now, who may even one day look back as we have and say they are grateful for where they grew up. They will have some fond memories, they will remember the kids they went to school with, the neighbor who lent a hand. We don't have a monopoly on good memories. Our lives are what we make them, no matter the circumstance, the enviroment. We all talk about the good old days in Chester, back when we could walk the streets.........but there was a lot of bad things going on behind people's doors. Things we didn't talk about back then...... we also grew up in a mostly segregated city where racism was quietly accepted until the 60's. Everyone has an opinion and we all won't agree. just share our memories, respect this site and others who post here. A difference in opinion does not have to be negative.

Pat & Florence, great to see you two on here. All three of us left a lot of memories on here. The younger generation don't know about the good times we had in Chester and what a great place it use to be and it seems like they don't care, so maybe they should read the archives and find out and stop telling us about the Now Chester, we know what things are going on in Chester some of us don't live that far away so stop telling us about change, it AIN'T never going to happen. thanks Brian for posting.

Sure Chester will never be the same, but nothing is. Every day its all different. But you yourself have some happy little memories from your childhood, when you were growing up.It's just like writing a diary, I can't remember anymore, mine are all down, I think. I've had some scary times in my life, but try to dwell on the good things, thats what matters, not material things, but how you lived your time. Everyone has a certain amt. of time, make the best and most of it, because before you know it it is gone. I wish I could go back to the beginning and start again and when you get older you will feel the same way. We all go thru the same life cycle, nobody escapes it. It is the cycle of life and if you can write some memories to be preserved why not, we did.

An afterthought: Here in Arizona, there are many publications for the seniors alone. I'm sure that there in PA you have the same newspapers, circulars, etc. and probably more. Why not write something about the site to appear in those publications. You would be surprised how many senior citizens are computer-literate, have no one to share their memories with and would LOVE to TALK about them and contribute - if they don't have a computer nor can they type, I would be they would find someone to tell their stories too and post them, right here.

What a wonderful dual service that would be - to them and to John Bullock's site.

Caroline: Try as you may, you must realize by now that trying to explain the real reason for John Bullock's GIFT to Chester, Pa., has never sunk in. The people who would love to contribute interesting facts about the life of yesterday, don't want to get involved with posters who have only their own self-interest at heart, thereby opening themselves up to criticism by those who live to criticize, and there are many here. True stories of the past and all the fun that existed in Chester cannot be honestly criticized.

Appeals have been made many times on this board to honor it's meaning, and they are as dismissed as yesterday's headlines.

During the time I posted a lot of history here, I got emails from people who read, but do not post. If only those same people would post their memories, then the nonsense would be ignored. There are many people still out there with interesting memories of oldchester.pa. I have read where most people just "stumble" upon or have been told about this site. I found out about it through Gebhart's column. At one time, I made an appeal for the younger generations to talk to their parents, grandparents, get their stories and post them here. Didn't work.

My suggestion would be advertising (free or otherwise) in the daily newspaper(s). The site needs to attract people who have inside them the memories that are so important - not to mention the fact that they are fascinating.

THE POINT IS , this site is not about Chester Today,

it is about Chester of yesterday, hence, OLDCHESTERPA.

That's why it was created..FOR CHESTER PAST. why..http://www.oldchesterpa.com/about.htm

The webmaster (John) provides a major service. Current news on the site about Chester (today) is a Public Service.

As adults visiting we should treat this site as adults . Share memories, good or bad, share information about the time you lived in Chester , share pictures and other items of historic and not so historic value.

Because of all the great memories POSTED on this NEWSSTAND , many have renewed or found new friendships. Many descendents of the people we knew and people from other places have found a part of a missing link to their "family tree" search. It is a treasure for researchers. It is a treasure for non researchers.

Lets not force the NEWSSTAND to close down as so many newsstands have in recent years.

Diane, I was not really trying to make a race point as much as I was trying to make a point to Mr. no name that trouble started a long time ago and that no matter when you were born or where you are brought up there will always be and has always been bad elements. By the way I was thinking back then we called it getting jumped and most of the time the police were never involved, now they call it mugging.

P.S. And yes I did learn how to fight. After a few butt kickings, by white guys. LOL

Tom 76...sorry you had such an awful experience. And I won't begin to compare of make excuses for the evilness of people. Not just Blacks but any and all who feel the need to do harm to someone simply because they are different. I went to school with a girl named Gloria Dugan and a couple of weeks ago she e-mailed me to asked if I remembered her? She says I sure do remember you because you stopped me from getting beat up in 10th grade! That made me feel good (I would do things like that and did not care what color or sex!)I find it appalling that we (humans) still feel the need to victimize others for no reason. Because we are too lazy, or just too non caring to go out and get it for yourselves. Even as a child you had to endure and experience violence. And for what? A few quarters! Bullies! Well, Like you said there are bad memories and experiences in Chester. I can't say I have ever been victimized like you, but I can understand why you felt it was not safe to walk from one end of Chester to the other. Bet cha' if you had two big ole white guys with you, things would have been different Tom!(LOL). But seriously, it is sad when our youth even today are victimized and what is worse, are the criminals! I just keep saying there are better days ahead Tom...I am still looking for them...And I won't give up. I probally won't live to see them...but I won't give up. By the way, did ya get boxing lessons after that?!!!??? Just kidding. Have a nice day and weekend.

Growing up Black and White in Chester

It was a beautiful Saturday in the summer of my 12th year. I got up early with the six dollars and some odd change in my pocket that I had made the night before shining shoes. I decided to hop the Red Arrow bus and head into town. I dropped my 25 cents in, plopped into a seat and put down the window for some manual air conditioning. I headed into town with a plan. First on my agenda was the State House restaurant for some breakfast. Then I was going to the State theater to catch the afternoon matinee. After that I would head over to L&H and do some shopping. I bought 3 really cool florescent colored iron-on's, they had rack and racks of them and they were only a dollar each plus tax. Next I would walk over to John's Doggie Shop. I decided on a couple of burgers with cheese because I liked the way they melted the cheese. They actually threw the cheese right on the grill and then scooped it up and put it on the burger. It was about 3pm so I decided to walk home because it was such a beautiful day. I would take 7th street all the way down to Memorial Park cut through the Gardens on my way to McCaffery. I made it as far as Booker T. Washington school. That's when all of a sudden 3 big black men (probably about 16 or 17 years old) started calling me cracker. I didn't have a clue what they were talking about, I just kept walking. Then one of them grabbed me next thing I know they had tied my hands behind my back with my own belt. They beat me up. There I was standing there crying blood running from my nose and lip, scared to death, hands still tied behind my back. They took the dollar something that I had left in my pocket and my iron-ons that I had worked so hard for the night before shining shoes in every bar in the upper West End before they took off. This old guy pulls up in his car It seemed like forever but was more like 4 minutes between the initial cracker comment. He took me home and of course my mom was in the front yard. She thanked him for bringing me home and he left. She was very comforting but I could see in her face that she was also not happy about what happened just by the way her jaw dropped when she saw my bruised and battered face getting out of the car. I told her what happened and she ask me why I didn't take the bus home. I told her that it WAS a beautiful day. From that day in early 1970 on I realized that it was not safe to walk from one end of Chester to the other.

It doesn't matter where you grew up or grow up there will always be some bad memories. Just hopefully the good far exceed the bad as in my case they do.

Regarding the mention of Ethel Waters, happy to say that the improvements to the park named for her is going along just fine. Can't wait to see how it will look when finished. Wonder if earlier posts on this NEWSSTAND helped the renovation effort.

should you go down to the Industrial Highway and visit the park, take a look at the renovations when looking up the street into town. and Sonny May's water ice store is opened as is Stacky's. Revisit OLDCHESTERPA, take a walking tour of via this website.

WOW! That is all I can say to Wayne...oh and I agree 100%. Some people who leave Chester for a "better" life, are always first to dis where they came from. First of all this page was not designed for that reason. It was designed for great reflections and maybe positive memories and or positive suggestions to bring this city back where it once was. Nor was this page designed for the rantings of myself and Wayne to comments entered by Brian. So for that I do apologize. But, get a grip Brian. DRUGS ARE BROUGHT AND SOLD EVERYWHERE BY ANY AND EVERYONE. DRUGS DO NOT DISCRIMINATE AND THEY ARE AN EQUAL OP EMPLOYER. They are sold in the suburbs (more than you are willing to admit), urban areas, inner city..Dr's offices, street corners, police stations! You name it. And Brian, Aston is not a haven! Aston is one step away from Chester! Words like "was" and "used to be", well that is what they are...PAST! Think to the future and the positive. There are far too many issues going on in this world for you to be dissing and stressing over Chester. I am proud to say I am from Chester, not Philly..CHESTER! And when I say Chester and get the frown with the "CHESTER"? I say that's right and that person gets the speech. The same one Wayne delivered. I love reading the messages of the old timers and their reflections on Chester and they never say anything negative. They are enjoying their memories, and thank God for them. Unlike Wayne, I have to address people such as yourself because it is in my nature. I am proud to have attended Chester schools. I was educated by the greatest English teacher to ever live, Roberta G. Lewis. Taught math by one of the greats, Samuel T. Swiggett! And I graduated from Chester High School (Class President) IMAGINE THAT! And I work EVERYDAY! I am proud of my heritage in Chester and in Alabama too. THE GOOD OLE' SOUTH....And I thank God the good ole' south did not win! Because all Blacks would still be slaves. But unlike you, at least we are not in that slave mentality you carry. Be true to yourself Brian, as I know you will. And keep on voicing your opinions, cause the constitution gives you that right. But let us get back to the purpose of this site. THANK YOU JOHN!

To Brian R, you have a lot to say about Chester. It appears that you fit into the sterotype of continuing to talk about an area to support your sterotypical needs. You can say what you want about Chester because it is your God given right to free speech; but, I know a lot about Aston also and trust me Aston have drug problems too. I know your counter argument would be that I don't live in Chester also. Yes, this is true. But the fact is I did not leave because the city was bad; I left because my parents provided me an opportunity to see the world. This is what Chester allowed me to be. Yes great teachers and neighbors inspired us to see the world, but we were encouraged to come back and be a positive role model showing kids in Chester and people around the world that we are somebody. Chester has great role models. I could name many. But you have decided to see Chester from a sterotypical lense.

Let me tell you what an education in Chester allowed me to accomplish. I had an opportunity to receive my Master's of Divinity Degree from one of the top ranked Divinity schools in the country, Duke University. Oh yes, I had the opportunity to shake hands with Ozzie Davis. If you don't know, he is a well known African-American actor and activist. I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Gospel singer Shirley Caesar. I've preached in churches where great preachers such as Rev Gardner C. Taylor, Bishop Bryant and others have delivered sermons. I had the opportunity to intern in Barbers Point Hawaii as an undergrad. at Virginia State University. Remember, my teachers and parents inspired me to see the world. I remember when I went to Smedley Middle school and I had to walk through Widner University to get to school; just being around college students was another aspect that inspired me to go to college.

I don't want to forget about the great teachers who attended the same church with my family. What you don't know is PTA occurred for me every Sunday. If I did something wrong in school, my parents did not have to wait until the end of the quarter. There were great teachers in the congregation keeping my parents informed about my behavior in school.

But, there is one great quality that I remember and cherish about Chester; this was the aspect of being a community and sticking together. Regardless of the negative images reported in the media, there are still many communities in Chester who are still working together. Many of my classmates are doing very well. Some have gone to college and others did not, but they have become very successful; and guess what, many still live in Chester.

Looking at more accomplishments inspired by great people in Chester. I've also had the opportunity to sit down and eat lunch and dig into the mind of one of the greatest historians, John Hope Franklin. Brian R, you love to talk about drive by shootings and robberies. Yes, this is true. But if the truth could be told, you really did not see anything. You just want to perpetuate what you have conceived in your sterotypical mentality. Once again, it is really amazing how many people who have a lot of negative things to say about Chester do not live in the city.

I could say more. But the one key thing that I remember is that my parents, family, and teachers inspired me to give back. Everytime I'm in Chester; I'm giving back. Since you left Chester have you tried to make a positive impact? I doubt it. Look at your writings. I usually don't take the time to respond to baseless statements; but I had to take the time to address your issues.

Does Chester have problems? Yes! Does Aston have problems? YES! Does Durham, NC have problems? YES! Some people tend to get their kicks by trying to put others down.

From this point, I will take the opportunity to respond to the reason why this web site was created to reflect on the beautiful qualities about Chester that made our lives great.

I think there is something all of you are missing.....this is about OLD CHESTER when it was drug-free and not much crime and when the streets were clean, it is about the memories of all those people that had a good life in Chester, when they had jobs and a shopping district that everyone went to on the week-ends before malls, and the local diners where the food was good and drive-in food stops like Lintons, Shusters aand drive-in theatres, that is what this site is for, to leave your memories of the good times. We all know how bad it is now and why and we all know why we moved, just thought you needed this reminder.

Today we receive the news on the NEWSSTAND at OLDCHESTERPA that another resident has died. Over the past 3 years we (speaking as a community) have been reacquainted with a city that has now been transformed in our history and memories by John Bullock and his tireless efforts. Because of his original quest a city was reborn. Many have volunteered their pictures, information, memories, time and buildings for the project. This history of the City of Chester, PA can not be erased. It is a continuing project. Please add to this wealth of information ‘cause many of us are getting to the age of a vintage wine. This is a reminder that if you have treasures to share, don’t wait, time goes by quicker than one thinks. John and Susan & family my most sincere thanks for the amazing challenge you undertook.

To Frank Schofield,

I was your neighbor in Eyre Park and lived at 60 S. Eyre. I always felt safe growing up there knowing there was a policeman as our neighbor.

My dad is still living in Chester and turned 90 last December. He is doing great and visits the bowling alley almost every day to see his friends.

It was nice to hear from you and to read about your mother and dad.

JOHN, I GAVE YOU SOME INFO LAST WEEK REGARDING MY FATHER AND YOU ADDED IT TO THE "POLICE" SECTION, FOR WHICH I AM GRATEFUL.

I'D LIKE TO GIVE YOU SOME OTHER INFO REGARDING MY MOTHER AND I. IN LOOKING AT THE BUSINESSES SECTION AND GOING TO WEINBERGS DEPARTMENT STORE, I SAW THAT MY MOTHERS NAME WAS NOT LISTED (AND MINE FOR THAT MATTER).

MY MOTHER, FLORENCE "PAT" SCHOFIELD WAS EMPLOYED IN THE COSMETICS DEPT IN THE 40'S AND THEN LEFT TO HAVE 2 CHILDREN. SHE THEN WENT BACK TO WEINBERGS IN THE 50'S AND WORKED THROUGHOUT THE 60'S AND EARLY 70's. SHE RETIRED DUE TO HEALTH REASONS IN THE MIDDLE 70'S AND HAS BEEN DECEASED SINCE NOVEMBER 1978. DURING HER TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT WITH WEINBERGS, HER DEPARTMENT MANAGER WAS JOSEPHINE GOLMOLKA.

I WAS EMPLOYED BY WEINBERGS AS A STOCK BOY AND AS A SALESPERSON IN THE MENS DEPARTMENT WHILE I WAS ATTEMDING CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL FROM ABOUT 1966 TO 1968. MY DIRECT SUPERVISOR WAS ROBERT HOLLIS.

To all classes who are having class reunuions: Beware: The company, who took individual pictures (for the class booklet) at our last reunion goofed up big time. First of all a few pictures did not appear in the booklet, a table group picture was cut in half leaving 3 others at the table out of the picture. But the most insidious thing of all was a picture of an individual with someone elses name under the picture. That whole flimsy booklet was shoddy work and not worth the price it cost. It was not worth the thin paper the pictures were printed on. Reunion committees should look into other companies other than American School Pictures.

What a wonderful website...thanks to everyone for all the great posts that brought back some memories. I have some good and bad memories as most of us do of our childhood in Chester, but mostly good ones. Some of the best were of going to St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Any members out there? Remember Rev Houser, Rev Van der Hil? I also remember Deshongs Park and never being able to "walk on the grass"...I bet they do now, if there's any grass left. I haven't been back to Chester since 1957. I went to Franklin School and then went to Ellis School for Girls in Newtown Square where I graduated. I worked at Scott Paper Co for two years 1955 to 57 before I moved to Florida. I do remember some of the kids I went to grade school with because they eventually graduated with my husband who also graduated from Chester High in 1955. Love to hear from anyone from this time frame. Nancy

Mary lou When you said you lived on Curry st, I thought that your sister had to be Lorry. About Joe McDonald. from what I've heard, It was who we called Joey, who was a few years younger than me. He was one of the kids who hung around the corner of Thomas and Johnson sts., playing kickball. He lived on the corner. Another person who passed away, used to live near you on Curry St., That was John Baroni. He passed away I guess about a month or so ago. I didn't know if anyone here was aware of that. Well, I get back with better news later..Sal

Hey Greg Morgan what's up? Remember me from Sband's? I use to bartend along with John Cunningham, Marie, Ginger, Jackie K, Joe Coursey. How about the year Sbandi's won the Delco Softball championship. What year would that be? When we all went to Delaware and bought cases of beer then we sat outside of the bar and partied because Albert was so cheap he was trying to charge for hotdogs right after the game for the championship in which Sbandi's won. And then he was pissed because we did spend money in his bar that night.

To: Laurie Emrick hund...here is some info on Al Dunlap former CEO OF SCOTT PAPER AND SUNBEAM. He was a ruthless cut throat! (Bad feelings from me huh? Yep) But he was known as the Chainsaw. He has a site and you can read all about how he fired thousands of people (though they called it downsizing). He was known for his ruthless tatics and ways. AND HE IS VERY RICH...HE GOT OVER 100MILLION from Scott's and I believe over 6Million from Sunbeam after they fired him! So, if you are related to this man.....go to Boca Raton find him and get the money he owes me! Ha Ha!!! Have a great day!

Sal, I think there was also a cousin of mine named Mary Ann April? I was young and don't remember much about her except that she had long dark hair and she was kind of tall but again we were young, in our early teens when they moved away.

I am afraid that a race track in Chester is going to drag Chester deeper down the drain. There is enough there and drugs there now. I dont think a race track is the answer.

I just about fell out of my chair when I found your website. I was dreading starting the Clyde/Roth side of the family as Henry W. Roth left a great will but kept out the names of his family but did include names of his wife's Clyde family. What Joy to see that he and his sibs are buried here!!

This is one of the best historical sites I've seen and I will be back many times, I'm sure.

Link to my website has Clyde/Roth/Kelley family of Chester and Philly. Please visit. Perhaps we're related.

Joe Mosakowski, boy do I remember the tower @ Scott's! I used to live right on 3rd street a few doors down from Oppenheimer's market (remember them?) and I used to look out my window at that toilet paper roll. I was all of 6 years old. I would enjoy the ships going down the Delaware as well. Never did I imagine that I would work @ Scott's for 18 years! (Til Al Dunlap came along!!GRRRRRRR!). All of us @ the plant were sad to see it go. I started a petition to keep it, but as you can see to no avail. "WHAT CHESTER MAKES, MAKES CHESTER"...Wow, a great saying..But just like the sign, it went with the wind with the tower. But I have faith Chester will come back and be strong again.

Hello There!!! What a great site! I just found out about it a few days ago. I grew up on Curry St. in Sun Village (my parents still live in the same house). What a great place to live.I loved growing up there. A gang of us would play kickball at the corner of Thomas and Johnson Sts. almost every evening. Not only kickball, but the ever famous game everyone knew..."RELEASE". It wasn't unusual to have about 30 kids hanging out on the McDonald's or the Chazin's steps on the corner as well. It was during this time that I had a very serious crush on Judy Elliott, who lived on Remington St. This was all in about 1967-1969. Later on (in high school) I worked for the guy EVERYBODY in Sun Village knew AND loved..Eddie Dodds..at Ryans Store on Morton Ave. Ahhh, Morton Ave...I could go on and on about that street. I lived in Sun Village from 1959 till 1974..(then again from 1979-1989). One important thing I forgot to mention which I think was part of a rich childhood in Chester...I was able to walk across the field and fish in Ridley Creek. Catfish, Carp and Blugills were about it at the time...EXCEPT for those rare times when some TROUT would get washed over the water falls in Chester Park and Irvington and end up in the tidal water that ran through Sun Village. I was lucky enough to catch three of them. Anyway..I'd love to here from some of the people (kids) who were part of the kickball and RELEASE gang from Sun Village. Take care everyone and God Bless.

just a quick concern, the city has more recreation than just basketball, football, and biddy leauge. another recreation in the city is drill teams and youth bands which play a major part in the cities youth area.although these area's of focus are not paid much attention theses organizations travel state to state representing chester city which gives them nothing in return. so my question is. its alright to build race tracks and marinas here in the city but nothing for the dillteam community which is not small at all. other cities we visit take excellent care of thier youth bands, even here i saw the early chester city band in the early 70's, what about the youth bands that are here marching into the future today recognize them too. some of these groups have histories that go back as far as 30 years ago the others are new representors. put there names in the newspaper sometimes it makes kids feel special to be acknowledged. holidays/events would be a great place to start because when the city has a holday or event the first thing they call on is the drillteams not biddy leauge or basketball. also nehborhoods because they represent those places in our city so here's a few names

mighty worriors 1970's early 80's fruit of the earth 1980's bennet barrets 1980's east side angels 1980's lamokin village strutters 1980's wm.penn hornets formerly the jaguires mid 70's until mid 90's and the new comers..... the golden caverliers infinity marching marauders imperial marvelettes bennet highsteppers step to this majestic flex the diamonds just to name a few. they all have pictures that represent the history of the adults that were once kids here in the city

Just sitting here thinking. ( I know, pretty dangerous, I know ) Looking back at when you were a kid, and your parents asked you to run to the corner store for milk , or even, I remember to buy cigarrettes. ( Yeah, I remember being able to buy them at that age ) And having some of your neighbors ask you to run to the store for them. Remember, sometimes they would pay you with the old sods bottles , that were worth I think around 5 cents ? Remember that ? That I think was just as good as being paid to do it . I know some of you guys , remember too going door to door asking people if they have any old soda bottles ? Now, ask your kids nowadays to run to the store for you ! They would in turn ask you, " Well, I need the keys to the car " !!! You don't expect me to walk, do you ? Just had that on my mind. Peace.

Even though my family moved to Linwood from Wm Penn project in 1950, a number of us were born at Sacred Heart Hospital. Our mother also worked there for almost 20 years. Hi all, I lived on 15th & Edgmont Ave from 1952 to 1957. I attended Smedley Jr High 7th, 8th & graduated the 9th grade 1956. I went to Chester High 10th & only 2 days of 11th grade. I was so shy I had no friends. I had one person that was friendly toward me Barbara Wallace begining the 7th grade. She & I have been great friends since 1957. Barbara is married to Ed Olinchuk & lives in Crum Lynn. I married Richard Hines & we live in Leola PA. I have fond memories of walking the streets of Chester, going to the parks & just enjoying the sites alone. I very much enjoy the outdoors!! I often went with my younger sister Leona, married Howard Foresman, to the Great Leopard Rolling Skating Rink. We had a brother Normie married Lucy Ruschanio. I don't recall the little deli near Smedley that a lot of us went to buy our lunch. OOHHH, how I loved those sandwiches! Our Smedley graduation song was "Would You Like To Swing On A Star". Still a favorite song of mine! I recall the most talked about teachers were Mr Mc Kinney & Miss Lindamuth. They got married 1955 or 1956. They had a wonderful time at Smedley graduation 1956!! M J
