KATE: I don't know who the author is and that's why I clarified it with the fact that I did not write it. Glad you enjoyed it, I hope everyone did. And, the title to that song should be "I found my love in Avalon .... beside the sea". Makes more sense than my mistake, because so many people "found their love in Avalon, NJ." Ain't life grand? I think the goddess of love must have spread her wings all over the NJ shore.

The New Jersey Shore - never has it been equalled for whatever magic it held. I too have the most wonderful memories of the shore, as did my mother, and her mother before her - what was the magic there? Songs were written about it - "I Left My Love in Avalon", etc. Oh gosh, the carefree, wonderful days of youth, romance and good friends. I think that's why a lot of you built summer homes there, to recapture that magic, and if you are still with the one you love, nothing could be more magical.

Here is something I must share with you; hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I know it's long, but I don't think John will mind, because it fits.

If you are old enough ...take the stroll... Close your eyes ... And go back ... Before the Internet or the MAC... Before semi-automatics and crack... Before SEGA or Super Nintendo..... Way back............

I'm talkin' bout hide and go seek at dusk, -- Sittin' on the porch, -- Simon Says, -- Kick the Can, -- Red light, Green light, -- Chocolate milk, -- Going home for lunch, -- Penny candy from the store, -- Hopscotch, -- Butterscotch, -- Skates with keys, -- Jacks,

-- Mother May I? -- Hula Hoops and Sunflower seeds, -- Whist and Old Maid and Crazy Eights, -- Wax lips and mustaches, -- Mary Janes, -- Saddle shoes, -- Coke bottles with the names of cities on the bottom, -- Running through the sprinkler, -- Running behind the DDT truck, -- Sittin' on the curb, -- Staring at clouds, -- Circle pins, -- Bobby pins, -- Mickey Mouse Club, Crusader Rabbit, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Kukla, Fran & Ollie, Spin & Marty ...all in black & white.

-- When around the corner seemed far away, -- and going downtown seemed like going somewhere. -- Bedtime, -- Climbing trees, -- Making forts, -- A Coaster made from orange crates and an old skate, -- Backyard Shows, -- Lemonade stands, -- Cops and Robbers, -- Cowboys and Indians, -- Jumpin' down the steps, -- Jumping on the bed, -- Pillow fights, -- "Company", -- Ribbon candy, -- Angel hair on the Christmas tree, -- Running from the guards at Halloween, -- Jackie Gleason as "the poor soul", -- White gloves, -- Walking to church,

-- Walking to the Community Center, -- Being tickled to death, -- Running till you were out of breath, -- Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt, -- Being tired from playin' . . . Remember that? -- Not steppin' on a crack . . . or you'll break your mother's back, -- Paper chains at Christmas, -- Silhouettes of Lincoln and Washington, -- The smell of paste, -- Buck bags and Evening in Paris, -- Crowding around in a circle for the 'after-school fight', then running when the teacher came. -- What about the girl that had the big bubbly handwriting. . . who dotted her "i's" with hearts?? -- The Stroll, -- Popcorn balls, & sock hops, -- Lunch Boxes with a Thermos (that broke).

Remember when....

-- When there were two types of sneakers for girls and boys (Keds & PF Flyer) and the only time you wore them at school was for "gym". . .And the girls had those ugly uniforms. -- When it took five minutes for the TV to warm up, -- When nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school, -- When a quarter was a decent allowance, and another quarter a huge bonus, -- When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny, -- When girls neither dated nor kissed until late high school, if then, -- When your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces (or when you did!), -- When all of your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done everyday and wore high heels, -- When you got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, for free, every time. . and,you didn't pay for air. . .and, you got trading stamps to boot! -- When nobody owned a pure bred dog (except Bohart),

-- When laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box, -- When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries, and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it, -- When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents, -- When they threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed . . . and did! -- When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms, flunk a test or chew gum, -- And the prom was in the auditorium and we danced to an orchestra, and all the girls wore pastel gowns and the boys wore suits for the first time and we stayed out all night, -- When a '57 Chevy was everyone's dream car . . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races,

-- When people went steady and girls wore a class ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger, -- And no one ever asked where the car keys were 'cause they were always in the car, in the ignition and the doors were never locked, -- And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home. No one ever had a key. -- And lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like "That cloud looks like a..... -- When stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals 'cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger, -- And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Then....baseball was not a psychological group learning experience, it was a game.

And...with all our progress... don't you just wish...just once... you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace... and share it with the children of the 80's and 90's ...

Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Trixie Belden, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows..., Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk... -- as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, -- Playing in Cowboy land, -- Baseball games, -- Bowling and visits to the pool, -- And eating Kool-aid powder with sugar, -- And summers filled with bike rides,

-- When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that!"

Unfortunately, Pidipat did not write this, I just wanted to share it with my hometown people and how good life was then, and we didn't know it.

Hi Florence, Well I guess you want me to come out of retirement, thanks. Been reading about the vacation spots some use to take, In the 60's we use to ride down the shore or take the Chester ferry, I was on it once when it caught on fire, it was quickly put out but that was a scarey few minutes. I spent a lot of time in Wildwood & Wildwood Crest as a late teen as did most of my friends. Then in the late 60's I discovered Rehoboth Beach & I never went back to Jersey. Later bought a place. I also remember Woodland Beach, De.it was a nice area.

Florence, Thanks for the tip about the Chester police officers. Is your grandfather still alive? Would he remember anything about George "Soap" Pierce? George is my great grandfather. I have a picture of him in his police uniform but don't know much about his service record with Chester PD. Thanks for replying!

Here's a great site to visit, it has historic info and pictures of old Wildwood: www.doowopusa.org

The following is from the sites description of its purposed:

"The Doo Wop Preservation League is a 501(c)3 non profit organization whose educational mission is to foster awareness and appreciation of the popular culture and imagery of the 1950's and 1960's and to promote the preservation of the largest collection of Doo Wop architecture found in the United States."

U.W. When my wife and I went back to the Shore a few years ago,we stayed in Ocean City. There was some house remodeling in the south end of the city. But no major redevelopment projects that I recall. I think there was a major renovation of one of Ocean City's classic old hotels.

We took trips up and down the Ocean Highway (not the NJ Thruway),traveling through the beach towns. We very much like Cape May, in fact we stayed there in 1967 for a week.

But Cape May was not the place that attracted me and my contempories when I was a wild and crazy guy in the mid to late 1950s.

Wildwood and Somers Point were the places to go then. I don't remember the names of the Somers Point nite spots, there were three places that were located very close together and they were open almost around the clock.

In those days you went from place to place during the night until they closed from 6am to 7am to clean out the drunks and debris. Lots of great music, girls and drinks.

uw, We went to Woodland Beach every weeken of our childhood and even after that. My grandfather built a bungalo there. He started out staying in a tent, while he was building the porch, from there he added to bedrooms and kitchen. We had no electricity in the earlier years, gas and kerosene. Eventually he built his own motor to power electricty. We thought it was the greatest place in the world. I loved Riverview, sometimes I can still smell the wooden dock.We had many a family reunion meeting Jersey cousins on the Wilson Line and going to Riverview. We also had reunions at Clemington Park. Did you ever hear of Woodside Park, up around Darby. Went there with the Goodwill Ladies Auxillary of Chester. I loved our time of life. Slow, quiet, clean and beautiful.More security. My Mother never worked accept at home, we always had a family dinner together almost every day, Our grandparents took us always to the Jersy families for visits.

Jack-Rez51: Have you been to Ocean City lately? It is a meca of new construction and renovation of old homes. Housing has sky rocketed there as in every other place along the shore. Except perhaps for Wildwood. But the Wildwoods are still a fun place to bring your family. Further down is beautiful Cape May. And those of us who lived there and raised families at the shore would not allow our kids to go into Wildwood during Spring Break. Yet I remember being one of the kids that drove there as a teen for Senior week. and that was in 58. (you know do as I say, not as I did) We drove everywhere, Atlantic City, Wildwood, New York, you name it if some one had gas money we went. We even drove to NC to the Marine base. By the way I have a Marine year book for May of 57 graduating class. If anyone was at Paris Island at that time.

Places besides the Jersey shore families went to were Charlestown Beach in Maryland, Haliway & Woodland Beach (SP?), Ocean City Maryland and I remember my sisters friends taking a cruise after they graduated from CHS in the mid 50's.

Also went to place in Kutztown called Crystle Cave. Dorney Park and of course Riverview Park. And how about the Allentown State Fair. It was a blast. And not to forget the fireworks at Fairmount Park in Philly in those days.

To, Spanky & Paula,

My comments are not directed at anyone in particular, rather than a response from an earlier posting about this being turned into a dating service. I think just what I had said is what this site is about and I'm sure that if someone does get a date from responding, that is great. There is no stone breaking on my end. I want to hear from my friends too. This is a good site and I want to at least see that everyones voices are heard. Keep on chating!

U W. Not only do I remember the Bridgewater area but I live on it. My parents(when single) fr Upland used to walk along the creek on Sundays, it was the place to flirt, guys sat along the creek while girls hobbled by in their long tight skirts & were happy to particapate in the flirtation. The area was loade w/ dogwood, lilac in Spring. The rendering plant was there when we moved into Duttons Mill Homes & one summer evening it was struck by lightening and we were very happy. The smell was awful in summer. Now there is a concrete company there & the creek area looks awful, especially now when fisherman are there & trash the place. Delaware County really messed it up after the flood of 1972 (71?). The other day we walked down to see creek & there was a skined skeleton remains of an animal, maybe a deer or a dog. Ugh.

Chesterites and Vacations in the 40s and 50s...

Took One week at the Jersey Shore, very few went to the Poconos and the Delaware and Maryland shore. No one that I knew back then took a winter vacation to Florida. A two week vacation was also rare back then.

In the 60s, the Interstate Highway system, two car families and two week or more of vacation time took people many miles beyond Chester.

But it is still hard to beat those great vacations at the Wildwoods when they were communities with small hotels, small motels, and single family and two family (upper and lower units) cottages. Every kid felt save on the Boardwalk at night. You could take the train to Wildwood back then. Remember that standing in line for breakfast and dinner was routine at the best restaurants. The airplanes trailing advertisement for nite clubs. The Public address system giving the description of a child who got separated from his or her family and that they could be picked up at Schellenger Avenue.

Went to the Shore a few years ago for a nostalgic trip back in time after not seeing the Wildwoods for more than 30 years. What a disappointment with all of the highrise condos and hotel/motels and the neon glitz. I guess you can never go back...one place that did not change is Ocean City, no overdevelopment and still a dry town. Somers Point is still where the action is for the single crowd.

My midwest born and bred wife could not understand my feelings about the Wildwoods of my youth. She thought it was all ticky-tacky and of course it is today...with none of the charm of those bygone summer vacation days.

Mae's Water Ice: For those that are interested. I heard (and it may only be rumor) that they are staying near 2nd and Parker and may be building a place across the street on a vacant lot there. Heard that two weeks ago they had a big crowd waiting to get some of the old fashion water ice. Was it the "Walking Tour" group by chance?

I was going to tell one funny srory, where my husband came home from work, and decided to take a swim in the neighbors pool. Away he went , flew over the hedge bam down in the pool. The neighbors had emptied it. The day I was christianed in St.Pauls at 9th and Madison, my godfather did not showup, he was a volunteer fireman, A fire had rung in, my father went out and got the patrolmen off the corner to stand for me. I have talked to Pat, right now she is tied up, I hope that she will be back, she has a lot of knowledge and it was fun at the time. It doesn't seem to interesting to me right now, maybe that will comew back. I would like to here from Kate and RC also florence

Here's a seasonal memory:

Swimming at Bridgewater. They had a tree swing at one point over the water the older guys would jump off and into the water. That sickening odor coming off a beat up old truck that carried dead horse parts to a rendering factory across the creek and up abit on the hill. I remember my Dad telling us they took all the old horses there when they were to old to work any more and made glue from some of their body parts. Don't know if that was fact, never did check that out. It just came to me with the thought of swimming at the creek. Also the old train trestle that crossed over the creek. Was there some type of accident years before where a young fellow jumped and died off it. This would have been before 1940.

To all readers of this thread, this website is not a dating service, nor has it ever given any indication of such a service! What this site is about is that folks that have grown up from this area or have lived in Chester have a way to communicate to other folks, friends, and family that were important parts of their lives that were also a part of Chester. If someone does get a date from this website that's great because it shows that the "Chester" still does exist. May we recommend a nice dinner?

I grow up on the Stevesons estate. My father was the caretaker and maintainence man. We lived behind the main house in a second floor apartment over the garages. My father was the one who would chase you when you got too close to the orchord or the main house when you were sleading on the hill. Ms Saddy Pippon bought the estate, after Ms Stevenson died, and made it into a nursing home. I don't know who owns it now. They were happy times when I lived there.

And yes I do remember Mackie & Mary’s store, my mother would send me their to buy something and tell me to Tell them to put in on the book which we paid on payday. The McMoran’s lived about four house up the street from me, I think the girl who was my age was Pat. They were a very nice family; we all went to St. Michael’s Church. My Mother & Father moved to Ayre Park about 1956, right before the flood my father passed away. My sister Mary Vaul-Partin also lived in Ayre Park at that time. I spent a lot of time at Clark’s store and the playground behind it. We had a couple of reunions, which were called Clark’s Store Reunion. Mr. & Mrs. Clark have both passed away.

Don't want to monopolize the board and risk being chastized, but I'm a little behind on my reading. A recent post regarding Louise's Restaurant brings some fond memories. [spent a lot of time there]. In the early 50!s Louise did a booming business when the Conchester Hwy. was being built. I'd like to relate one of the biggest laughs I had about Louise. Being a restaurant,it was subject to periodic inspections by the Board of Health. One of the regulations was that she MUST have a dishwasher. Louise never had one. There was a spot for one cut in the counter though. Every time the inspector came in Louise said" it's out for repairs". This went on for years. Never did see a dishwasher there. A nice and funny lady!

I sent this before, but I don't know where it went. Producer's of a new television teen dance show, say they have found the ideal place to tape their show each week. They've got their eye on a seven story building that went up in 1918 and once housed the Fidelity Chester bank in the middle of the city at Fifth St. and the Ave.of the States.Every Sat. afternoo beginning in June, say creators of the new program called "The B Side", about 40 teens from around the region, picked from auditions, will boogie their hearts out to pop and hip hop in a high ceiling section of the building that served as the bank's lobby.

Springtime Memories...a Picnic Grove just west of the Felton Firehouse, up the hill and on your right as you headed out Concord Road.

Great times there at various organization's picnics...all kinds of comfort food, corn on the cob, hot dogs, etc. Behind the Grove there was a railroad running along the bank of a Crick (remember, that's how you say 'Creek' when your from Chester) where you could swim. Don't recall the name of the Grove or the Creek

I think the area is now Chester Township.

Sun Village in 1964, I noticed some inquires about this time frame. I lived in the village from 1946 (birth) until 1968. I have a lot of fond memories. The name Merrit and Larson are mentioned in some of the inquires. I used to hang out with Ron Merrit and Allan Larson. I often wonder how they are doing. Chester is and will always be in my blood. I believe that it will come back; not like it was but, it will get better.

Someone was just writing about sledding, does anyone remember sledding down the hill at Chester Hospital? All the student nurses would come out and join us, at that time they lived at the dorms on the hospital grounds. As I lived on Taylor Terrace, we would be down sledding until late at night when my father would come down and chase us home. And of course we always looked forward to the May Market, lemon sticks, hot dogs (why did hot dogs always taste better then?) and the car we wanted to win. And trying to meet a nice girl.

She also has 2 children. Carol is the tallest in the family with 2 children but she never lived in McCaffery either. She and I had an apartment at the edge of Chester Park on Madison Street. To: Good Ole Joe Actually, when I mentioned that mansion near Wetherill School I was remembering that from what my mother told me, not from my own recollection. Unfortunately, most of my family has passed away so there is no one to ask if I am remembering what she told me accurately. Where was Stevenson's Hill?? Maybe near Chestnut Parkway where Belvedere Convelescent Home was?? I know that used to be the Stevenson estate which was thought to be a stop on the underground railroad because they found a tunnel there with artifacts in it. It sounds like you used to live in the same houses that my parents and older siblings lived in. Possibly even the same house. They too were across from the field between Bond Bread and Wetherill School. I don't remember the horses at Bond Bread but we did have a Bond Bread man who drove a truck, Mr. Casey. Liked him so much we named our puppy, Casey. I was born a year after my family moved to the Irvington neighborhood that I mentioned previously. You remember a quarry at the end of 24th Street. I remember my parents telling me that our neighborhood in Irvington was built on a quarry so you are remembering that area before the houses were built. I do remember the tree at Wetherill that everyone climbed and carved their initials in. Hadn't thought about that in a long time. Thanks for the memory.

to Jack ; Sun Village ,there is still quite a bit still there, the part that is/was along Ridley Ave is still there, although I/95 took a chunk out of it.It is on its way down, the rest of Sun Village was a mixture of row homes, and businesses, Central T.V,Fowlkes Jewelry,Melrose Restaurant, and Joe's Hardware, are some i recall. i believe Joes Hardware is still Wisted in the phone book and still in business. The houses along Ridley Ave were/are only a story and a half, all row houses. The rest were typical brick row homes (Thomas Street for instance),then the ones up by PMC were a mixture of Ridley Ave and row homes (some called Sun Hill) right across from Widener/PMC,the university has been buying them up.most homes have someone living in them, but there are boarded up houses and problems related .Widener has maintained their property well.I/95 is the dividing line between the have and have nots. This section is/was not a project. Tthere is a tie with Sun Ship ,but i am not sure what, other then these houses were for ship yard employees, but i don't know IF THAT IS CORRECT.

To Mid-Age Chesterite...I remember the Drive-in on Chester Pike. I used to live on E. 16th Street and used to walk down Ridley Avenue to the corner store, cross the railway line, turn right and go to Morton Avenue. There I would buy my hoagie or cheesesteak from Squires, also visit the 5 & 10. Then I would make my way home via Melrose Avenue, either turn into 14th Street then up Washington Ave or continue up Melrose to 16th Street. During the summer we all used to go swimming at the PMC indoor pool. There were always two or three lifeguard cadets to keep an eye on us. Had a fantastic time. Our summers at Washington Park were memorable too. There were always guy playing basketball and during the winter we used to slide down the hills in the snow. I used to babysit for a family who lived on the corner of Glen Terrace and Washington, but I just can't remember their family name. I had a wonderful time growing up in Sun Hill too.

Paula,, I knew Larry very well. He played for our pool team at LLoyd AC, even when he was very sick he would come down and play once in a while, he is truly missed. On another note did you know a guy name Ray Dormer? I used to go to school with him and hung around with him for a while when I was in high school.

Well Mary, I lived on 24th St., across from the field between Bond Bread and Wetherill School...from about 1941 to 1950...I don't remember a building being there...I do remember the wall and it's unique construction with bottles, junk metal, stones, bricks etc....Everyone said the builder must have been crazy...After 3 years in Trade School I came to view it as a masterpiece done by an extremely talented craftsman... There was a tree close to the school property called the Banner Tree...many 'kids' climbed that tree, and carved initials into the bark...And, take it from me, you could get very sick from eating the pears in other trees there before they were ripe...My first memories of the Bread Co. they had horses, then all of a sudden they had trucks, and Friehofers had horses, as did the 'iceman'...These vendors walked right into our homes, to the kitchen and put the bread or milk or ice where it belonged...We only had a key for the house when we went on vacation, to keep little kids from walking in the house with no one there...I remember Ralph Greico (Greicos Bakery) delivering to our house, also the Jewel Tea truck...For me the local area extended from the Irving Mills to Upland from about 18th Street through Parkside including Chester Park and all along the Ridley Creek...Sledding down Stevensons Hill was sometimes better than Chester Park and the "Sugar Bowl" ...floating on ice cakes down the creek was great fun...skating at Ridley Lake or in the quarry at the end of 24th St...I remember the Wetherills living down around 22cnd St in a large mansion...a must stop on our Halloween outings...Perhaps there once was a manse where the Bond Co building was built... Any way, thanks for stirring up those memories for me, many more are flooding , too many to write at this time...

Someone posted asking about neighborhoods in the first ward (St. Robert's). Our neighborhood was called Irvington. It was small, from 23rd to 25th Street between Providence and Ridley Creek. Named after the Irving Mill which is still there. My parents moved there in 1955 and the house was brand new. They moved there from a smaller house on 24th Street across from the old Bond Bread which later became storage for voting machines. Don't know what is there now. Bond Bread was next to the old Wetherill mansion and Wetherill School. Does anyone remember the old wall next to Bond Bread that was and I think is still standing that was probably part of the Wetherill mansion?? It had a circular cut out with built in concrete benches that said REST over the back of it??

The USSChester, built in a New York shipyard.1928-30.When she entered the war in 1941,The Chester was able to steam at 32 knots and carried about 1200 men. It carried 9 eight inch guns, eight 5 inch guns, and 4 aircraft that could be launched from 2 catapultsIn recognition that the new enemy of the surface warship was the airplane, the Chester was armed with 32 of the 40mm and 27 of the 20mm anti aircraft guns.Near the end of 1942, the Chester hit a mine during the Guadalcanal campaign. was repaired and put back in action for the Gilbert Islands action. In 1944, she saw action in the marshall islands and in the Formosa air battle. Was part of Adm.William "Bull" Halsey's third fleet during the battle for Leyte Gulf. The last assignment was an assault on Iwo Jima. After the war the Chester was decommissioned and broken up. The ship's bell was saved ands is on display at the Nether Providence Elementary School in Delaware Co.

To Jack Rez 51

I may be mistaken but I think that the West End also included homes & businesses from either Market Street or Edgmont Ave heading westward. Addresses changed from East to West at either point. Don't remember which street.

I believe most of the Italian neighborhood was centered in and around St. Anthony's Church, extending to Broomall, Lamokin, Pennell, Pusey then east to Penn Street, then from Front to around 6th & 7 Streets. Of course there were other nationalities in those areas but I believe years ago it was where people were prodominately Italians.

Jack: I always called my part of the World in Chester - South Chester - it is part of what is referred to on this board as the West End. I think those of us that grew up calling it South Chester only recogonized the areas from St. Hedwigs' south to Trainer. and from the River up to about 6th Street if that far up. Not until I moved away in 1954 did I find that what I had known as South Chester was in fact the West End. I don't think in those days that we called them by their wards, etc. It was the Polish section, the Italian section, the Greek section, the Irish section, etc. Chester was a city of neighborhoods.

Vincent: One memory that I loved when in the Italian section was the roasted peppers you could smell early in the morning with what I imagine was a type of breakfast sausage.

One memory that was sweet as sugar was the family days at Scott Paper. My mom worked with the catering company and she was the Candy Cotton lady on more than one occasion. They had this great big drum that went around and around spinning the sugar into a spun sugar treat. She would have to dive that paper cone into it and rotate to catch the sweet stuff.

Neighborhood Question:

Where exactly was Sun Village located? How about the Italian neighborhood? Any specific neighborhood in the 1st Ward (St. Roberts)?

Chester's WestEnd included everything West of Engle St and from Concord Road to the Delaware River. Highland Gardens,Buckman Village, McCaffrey Village, the St. Hedwig's area were some that I remember.

I mention the What's New section because I have received quite afew emails from people that just come to the NEWSSTAND and don't realize the vast amount of information that is being feed into this site of Johns.

Again, I apologize if I offended anyone reading that particular post. I feel the archives are a great read and should be looked into by newer people to this site.

TO BABS: I grew up in Sun Village. Lived there from 1948 til 1962, then moved to 12th and Madison Streets and graduated from CHS in 1964. The East End of Chester was a great area to live in back then. We lived next door to the Fiorelli's on Remington Street (Larry Fiorelli was a police officer during the Wade site fire and later died from an illness related to that fire). We were a tight knit community back then and knew all of our neighbors. Where did you live in Sun Village?

TO U.W.: This is in response to your long list of people not checking out this site any longer. Not true! I posted in 2001 and 2002. Still enjoy the site very much! I like the fact that we can e-mail John about any relevant info and he will include it in the proper category. I'm still here checking out this site a few times a week and several others are still posting once in a while, e.g., pcrowther and others post regularly. I enjoy Komarnicki's Korner and a lot of other features. I sometimes feel disheartened by those who post with or without a name and have negative comments towards anyone on this site. THIS IS A GREAT SITE! I want to hear what everyone has to say about Chester but we could do without personal negative comments about anyone, no matter who they are or where they live! Life is hard enough and the world can be cruel. So let's just treat each other with the respect we all deserve! Let's have fun!!

Reading about Stotters; do you remember the way they made change? They used a metal box that went into a metal track to the balcony,it went shooting across the ceiling in a birdcage like metal track ,after the cashier made change and put it in the box, it would come shooting back to the counter that arranged the sale.I never figured out how it worked to this day.sure was neat. One store in Phila. had a similar system,i think it was Gimbels or wannamakers.

U.W., Im not sure about that, but my father would know. He grew up with all of his cousins on 3rd street and the house he grew up in has our last name on the top of it. If you drive down third street you can see it, around 3rd & Lamokin. The story behind that is, that the house was originally a church and when my grandfather bought it, he didnt want anyone to think it was still a church so he put our name on the top of it, in brick. The current owner of the house is a man who used to work at Night Owls.

Yank's Poultry Farm was owned by Fred and Lucy Yanks. They also grew and sold fresh fruit and vegetables. For awhile, they made cinder blocks there too,I saw a worker get injured there once.

They were my grandparents best friends, so I spent alot of time there, lots of fun!It was much bigger than it looked from the road.

Chicken tasted so much better back then.

I remember when Louise's Hoagie Shop was originally located right next to Moe Seidmans Market. It was big and dark and kinda dingy, like a bar, but the hoagies were pretty good. Louise was always helping and talking to the kids in the neighborhood. She also fed a lot of poor kids for free. I'll bet their are alot of adults out there who wll never forget her.

Everytime I see a comic book , I want a chocolate coke from Seidman's drug store.

To Babs....Yes I remember Yanks Poultry Farm! I recall driving on Bethel Rd.[Chichester] one Sunday morning. It was just at the crack of dawn. Just as I came to the stop sign at Engle St. I saw two "gentlemen" who had their choice of a live Turkey running with it in their arms towards the Fairgrounds. Often wondered how many birds Yanks lost that way. I should remember Moe Seidmans[Garden Food Market] I worked there. Reggie Jefferson and I used to do home deliveries. Moe had an old Suberban for del. I didn't drive then. Reggie did the driving. Fun times!

FLORENCE: Do you know what that old courthouse is currently being used for? When I saw it in 1980, it seemed to be used for storing furniture of some type, all piled up and scattered in disarray. That would be interesting to know.

Thank you for "refresher course 101 oldchesterpa"

Your posts were an early education on memories.

If you have not guessed..there people are the first to leave memories on this board. They are in the "Archives 2000" Everyone there made up the year 2000. Some still post, most do not, but going back reading what they wrote is a story of memories in abundance. Each and every one of your messages were either filled with memories or inquiries searching for ancestors. You were able from this site to get a past view of the History of Chester.

Again where are you, the board is still here, so please add to the memories and your findings. (by the way paul you were the very first to post)

Thanks to Johns efforts and the many people that have contributed information and pictures regarding Chester to other than this message board. In particular to "WHATS NEW" (over 400 additions to this section alone) There is no other site on the web such as this treasure.

REALLY folks, John has added to his "Whats New" section yesterday. Please take advantae of this interesting information. Enter all the different doorways on Johns site. They are filled with so much History.

Now I will leave so that you all can come back home and tell us more about your adventures.

To Dan, Don, and Florence. Thank you for your comments about Mr.Bennie, in response to my post earlier today about the Chester Track Club. Don, the 9.7 that Bennie Wright ran in the 100 yard dash at Chester High School can never be broken because no one broke It before the distance was converted to meters back In the 1980's. The record Is there forever unless they convert back to yards.

This use to be a great site for ALL Chester's present and past residents. If one just stuck to the topic of the site, there would be no problems. What this site has become is a personal chat room. Many previous posters, myself included, have refrained from posting because of that reason. It just hasn't been interesting for a long, long time. Hope it can get back to what it use to be, a pleasant site.

Hi Everyone, I was born in Chester, but i do not live there. Both of my parents were born and raised in Chester and my Grandparents and Family business are still in Chester. My Father and his two brothers own Night Owls/Lavella Bros. on W. 3rd & Ulrich. My grandfather(Gabe Sr.) and his brothers Tom, Fred and Guy are the original Night owls and started the business in 1937, with just a little wagon, selling produce from door to door. I hear many Chester stories from my father and i share them with my friends. I meet alot of the Chester Greats when im working at Night Owls! I enjoy going to 2nd and Parker for some May's water ice which has been there since 1946!! So i just wanted to share my thoughts if you would like to talk just email me!

I want to personally thank John for intervening and I especially want to thank Tom for immediately emailing me. More can be accomplished in a positive way if emails were used for negative responses, etc., instead of posting them on this site, which I truly hope continues on and on for our children and grandchildren to learn from and enjoy. It would make less work for John (who already has enough to take care) to have to delete them, and a person-to-person admonition or anger, or whatever, can better be accomplished through emails. A better understanding can take place on a one-to-one basis and from there, many times, a new friendship is born.

So, I IMPLORE you to use the email instead of this board for negativity or criticism. I pray you will do this. AND, I always, always answer my emails.

I hope you all agree, and thanks to those who enjoy what I write because I do it for enjoyment. At times it may sound sarcastic, but it's not - it's just poking fun at life - not you personally - unless, of course you anger me - so cut that out! Email me!!

I hope I can look forward to a continued relationship with all of you - God willing and the "creek don't rise". (he-he). Thanks to all of you for "bearing with me".

* Re: Virus Concerns *

Folks, please excuse my intrusion but before anyone jumps to too many conclusions, let me add that there is at least one virus now that disguises the sender. In other words, if I were infected it might send emails to people in my address book but it might show "Jane Doe" instead of "John Bullock" as the sender.

Let's hope that everyone is now practicing "safe computing" with antivirus software and current definitions. As there are new viruses discovered daily, I don't depend on my scheduled update to check for them. I manually check for new definitions each morning (before I check email) and sometimes again later in the day.

Now, back to happy reminiscing about OldChester!

Ye Olde (and very humble) Webmaster,

John

The above is what appeared in Tom's email - according to what he sent me, and this is highly unusual. So as Tom said, DO NOT OPEN IT. I am going to send everyone on my mailing list this information. I hope John and/or others can help solve and stop this before too many others are hurt.

To TOM and everyone else: I was just notified of Tom's post and also I received an email from Tom asking me why I sent him what appears to be porno. Some of you may be very angry at me, but I assure you, and I told Tom, I did not send such a thing and would never, ever think of doing that, especially if it is virus-connected. I had a virus about a year ago and that caused some damage to my computer.

How, whoever did this, was able to use my email address to do this I don't understand at all. I didn't think that was possible; but apparently it is. Maybe John can help us out here because someone is being extremely vicious and hateful and I think trying to sabotage this board.

Tom, I hope you have already received my response, and if you could send me the names of the other people who possibly received that, it would help trying to solve this.

I swear to you - I did not do this and never would.

RC: Are you referring to the pits on Township line rd. That was our Hookman story and everyone has a hookman story. Ours started down in Beaver Valley. The short version. If you parked there at night there was this guy with one arm and a hook on the other. He would smash your window kill your girl and then kill you. The rumor was that none of the body were never found. Back to the Acid Pits story, word was spread (maybe even by Sun Oil to keep trespassers out) that the acid pits would eat you alive and nothing would be left for the police to find. We were told to not even go near it because the fumes would kill you, too. We even walked on the other side of the road, would point out animal carcasses on Townshipline Rd and say they made it out of the pit area but they weren't really that lucky, because it was in the air.

Was it the speeding cars that kill them or was it the Acid Pits?

I wonder if their are any "oldtimers" who remember that the pool at Sun Oil farm was built by volunteers working on their own time. There used to be Horses for hire too. That nasty pool of waste glunk on ridge road claimed quite a few pets before it was filled in. It surely can't be doing the environment much good.

I use to work the kitchen next to Ceil and also worked the grill along with Helen. I probably made food for anyone whoever went there in the late 70's and 80's. I guess I was considered number 3 cook. I used to work Saturday night alone when they had that wonderful band the Angie Lenzi Trio... ;)

Hello to all! Besides what I wrote a few days ago In defending my hometown of Chester Pa. against the wannabe Chester Clipper, this is only my second time posting here. I am bringing a positive little message to the readers, and It does pertain to CHESTER PENNSYLVANIA. I am a track coach for the Chester Track Club, which consist's of boys and girls age 6 to 18. Mr. Bennie Wright was my coach when I was a very young fellow, and now as he Is moving up In age we have developed the Chester Track Club out of Mr. Bennie's Chester Blazers. Mr Bennie started the Blazers over 50 years ago, and all of the current Chester Track Club coaches ran for him. The man Is like a true father to us. If any of you out there have children or grandchildren that likes to run, or has so much energy, and you are looking for a way to utilize that energy, you can bring the child to the Chester High School A-field ( 12th and Lamokin) at 5pm to sign up for the summer AAU track and field program. We started on May 1st and had a pretty good turnout. Mr. Bennie Is still with us and we have a full professional staff of 6 coaches. Four of the coaches are high school head and assistant coaches at Chester High School. One coach Is a parent of an athlete and a former all-star runner, and the final official and honorary coach Is (all of Chesters) legendary track athlete Mr. bennie Wright. Anyone interested will need to bring a copy of the athletes birth certificate and the registration fee of $50.00, which covers the AAU card (required), Insurance, and one uniform. Remember the Sun Oil Company's Annual Picnic at the Farm?

All kinds of contests and games for the whole family. Softball, kids races, pitching horse shoes, Tennis, and Swimming in the Pool. And plenty of picnic food.

Remember the little gray snack bar outside of the pool...great hot dogs and frozen Milky Way bars.

Life Guards who throw you out of the pool for roughhousing and breaking the rules.

Locker rooms in what was called the Barn where you signed in. Clay tennis courts with tennis rackets that you checked out at the desk in the Barn. All kinds of sports equipment, from horse shoes to softball bats, gloves and balls could be used at no charge.

Sun Oil Rec Farm was a great place every summer in those lazy, hazy days so long ago...all you needed was a towel, bathing suit and a bottle of baby oil with iodine for a great tan.

Haven't seen the Sun Oil Farm in more than 35 years...is it still there? If anyone has any pictures from the 50s of the Farm, it would be great to have them scanned and sent to oldchesterpa.

This site does get alot of hits but there are only a few regulars that post. I wasn't raised in Chester but we shopped there when I was a kid. So, being one of the "younger" ones that read this site every few days - I don't post often. The memories of what it was like in the 40's & 50's, as well as the historical info, are nice to read though.

Fog Horns - you could hear the horns and the ferry horns all the way to Brookhaven & Upland. I remember hearing them late at night after I went to bed. Also I remember riding the ferry across to Jersey but that was long before the bridge was built.

To All: I have read every post on this bulletin board since its inception. If you go back and read you will see a lot of residents of Chester posted and it was enjoyable to read. Now we have to listen about someones sex life about Phoenix and only God knows what else. How we have changed. And if you notice none of the first ones who were on this site and posted legimate questions and memories about Chester are still around. I talked this site up to everyone but it has changed so much I think most of the interest is gone. Let's see if we can get back what this site was originally about. If certain persons want to dictate let them start their own site and have a ball. I am usually not this vocal but I think we need to reclaim this site for CHESTER MEMORIES.

I said it before, and it needs repeating;

It is too Bad that this site has degenerated into pettiness with many posters acting like spoiled children.

John Bullock established this site with the following stated objective that is found in his description of the "Newsstand"

"Share your recollections about Chester! Post some current news about what's happening in the city! If you're doing genealogy, post the surnames you're working on."

I for one would like to see those posters take their childish and petty coments somewhere else.

There are some posters who should take a rest and let others use the site as John designed it!

Hi everyone......been reading a lot of the posts lately, and really getting quite tired of the people who can't get over themselves!!! Anyway, enjoyed reading about the foghorns....i remember when i was very small lying in bed listening to all the sounds of the city. the trains behind 6th st.,,the sounds from the Delaware and that god-blasted horn from Felton Fire House on Highland Avenue.....Also does anyone remember the ship that went down in the 70's in Hook.....Burned for days,,,i remember seeing the fire from the bedroom window on 7th st. The best sound though was the sound of Church Bells,,,,,every corner around had a church and bells just would ring all the time. Remember walking down Highland Avenue the day the bells rang nationwide for the end of our involvement in Vietnam....Memories of Chester....just wish everyone here would keep that in mind,,,,that's what this board is for, that and finding old friends and maybe even some new ones...PS BIG THANKS TO JOHN FOR THE SCHOOL SITES ON HERE.....RESURRECTION IS HOLDING AN ALL CLASS REUNION ON AUG 17......ALL BECAUSE JOHN GAVE US A WAY TO RE CONNECT....THANKS JOHN!! This hopefully is an answer to U.W.'s question of if Chester High had a school song. I have a handbook published by the Student Council of Chester High School 1964-1965 and at the very back of the book is a song entitled "Alma Mater" It goes: Hail,Chester High! All honor, praise be thine. We owe whate'er we are to Thee, Whate'er we hope to be. On future's broad'ning path, We'll firmly tread with vision clear. And thank thee, Chester High. There are also several cheers included but none that you are trying to recall. Hope this helps:)

PS, UW, Kate, Tom::: I remember swimmimg at the Trainer Rocks & after walking home, my bathing suit started to shread into pieces. Later in life I realized that Sun Oil's acid pits were just up stream next to the cemetary. I reckon the acid was leaking into the creak. I remember the homes on the right, heading south, were always referred to Bedbug Row in my era. I ate a many of good pizza's at the Highland Cafe in the early 60's..

Kate:

The stream came under TWP. line road. There is a little bridge near the Twp. Line road entrance to the park people would skip pebbles off the bridge into the water that went down to the rocks. The creek still runs thru the rear of the cemetery then over to the Sun property.

Another name for that row of houses was :Tobacco Row.

Kate(ND) and I promised myself not to post again this week...like my new years won't do list, that promise was not kept.

We went there I guess about 1947 thru the early 950's. We always called them the turtle rocks. I once saw in Ed Gebharts column mention about the turtle rocks. Don't know if they were one and the same. Places had different names, I remember a patch of stone up around Red Hill, PA referred to as the "devils potatoe patch" just another name for someone's imagination I assume.

There was a nickname for the row of houses to the left of the rocks in Trainer as you entered, am not sure of that so will not post it.

The best pizza served was being thrown around in conversation last night. Someone mentioned the pizza at the Highland Cafe. Wasn't that the bar/pizza place near the train station.

Good question Kate. I am thinking back in my mind, because I spent many a day back in that field. I used to ride my mini bike back where the old Buckman Airport was and on the other side toward linwood was the Sunoil acid or tar pits. We never really rode back there because it was fenced off and nasty. I don't remember where the creek actually came from maybe there was a tunnel up near Townshipline Rd.

Thinking back the girls should have worn shorts. It was a great place for Sunday afternoon family walks and perhaps a picnic too. You could walk thru to Township Line Road and up to the Frozen custard stand across from the cemetery on Huddle Ave.(?)

I don't think skinny dipping was a regular there, only down the "Hobo Jungle beach"

It goes to show, even if you are suspended you can go forward and make a success of your life.

As a kid, I enjoyed the sounds of the fog horns and trains late and in the wee hours of the mornings. Made me think that all were not sleeping like we were suppose to be.

Up until moving from Chester over 10yrs. ago, also in the late hours of the evening and into the wee hours of the morning (after midnight), recall hearing the sounds of the engines revving up at the airport when the wind was in the right direction.

Not only the sights of the city but also the sounds are fond memories of the past.

Harvey: I remember the fog horn well, It had an eery two note sound, one medium the next low. Man, the sounds of Chester, Don't know which factory it was but it had to be deep in the West End, but they had the 7 am whistle and a noon whistle. combine that with the trains howling in the night, the ships and tugs on the river. The three fire "horns" asking for help and you really had the sounds of the city. G

PAMRHS75 - Mr."Brandywine" has a place in heaven - I don't know how he ever stood up straight after being bent over in that truck for all those hours - and the floor of that truck had to be covered with peas - kids would sit on the curb with their "pea shooters" and lob them into the truck. Are you from Highland Gardens - if so where? We were on Price Street.

Sonny, Their are lots of elders who know how to use a computers.I remember the waterice man in the late 30's and early 40's. He pushed a little cart around, it held a big block of ice, his ice scraper and lots of bottles of good flavors. I think it cost about 3cents.

FROM THE WHITE HOUSE:

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, 2002 A PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

"Since our Nation's founding, Americans have turned to prayer for inspiration, strength and guidance. In times of trial, we ask God for wisdom, courage, direction and comfort. We offer thanks for the countless blessings God has provided. And we thank God for sanctifying every human life by creating each of us in His image. As we observe this National Day of Prayer, we call upon the Almighty to continue to bless America and her people.

Especially since September 11, millions of Americans have been led to prayer. They have prayed for comfort in a time of grief, for understanding in a time of anger and for protection in a time of uncertainty. We have all seen God's great faithfulness to our country. America's enemies sought to weaken and destroy us through acts of terror. None of us would ever wish on anyone what happened on September 11th. Yet tragedy and sorrow none of us would choose have brought forth wisdom, courage and generosity. In the face of terrorist attacks, prayer provided Americans with hope and strength for the journey ahead.

God has blessed our Nation beyond measure. We give thanks for our families and loved ones, for the abundance of our land and the fruits of labor, for our inalienable rights and liberties and for a great Nation that leads the world in efforts to preserve those rights and liberties. We give thanks for all those across the world who have joined with America in the fight against terrorism. We give thanks for the men and women of our military, who are fighting to defend our Nation and the future of civilization.

We continue to remember those who are suffering and face hardships. We pray for peace throughout the world.

On this National Day of Prayer, I encourage Americans to remember the words of St. Paul: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." The Congress, by Public Law 100-307, as amended, has called on our citizens to reaffirm the role of prayer in our society and to honor the religious diversity our freedom permits by recognizing annually a "National Day of Prayer."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2, 2002, as a National Day of Prayer. I ask Americans to pray for God's protection, to express gratitude for our blessings and to seek moral and spiritual renewal. I urge all our citizens to join in observing this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-sixth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-sixth."

GEORGE W. BUSH

Hi Pam, Did you see my post about the blind girl from the Gardens? Did you know her? I forget her name. Maybe Brenda. She used to always be at the playground behind Wm. Penn on the swings. Is Sue Dave's younger sister I remember a blond is that her? And I'm just curious What does the 6 (six) in both of your screen name signify?

Anyone remember Billy Blowert? He was a real good trumpet player. Just wondering if he continued playing.

Florence-- I remember Brandywine! All us kids would run home begging for ice cream money. As for McGlone's chinese apples, my husband, as a kid packed both sides of his nose with the seeds & had to go to Sacred Heart to have them extracted! Welcome to the board sister-in-law,Sue Watras!

Trainer Rocks looked so big when we were kids. You could actually slide down them into the creek and swim (well not swim but dip). I remember we hookied school when I was going to Pulaski. It was a big meeting place for people skipping school. There were kids from St. James, Rez, and even St. Anthony's. We would get all wet from swimming then lay on the rocks to dry off before we went home. The kids from catholic schools used to take there shirts off because they were white, before they went swimming. One day there was about 10 of us and the police from Chester, Trainer, Chichester and Marcus Hook surrounded us. We all got nabbed, it was in the afternoon. The police then took everybody back to there schools. By the time we all got back to school it was time for dismissal. The school called my parents and gave me a 3 day suspension. Just what a kid who didn't want to go to school anyway, needs.

Frank: Unfortunatly it is not mine. It was sent to me in a email from another that reads the board and rarely posts. It is not hers either. It was sent to her in a fwd. note from someone in Texas. So the author as far as I know is unknown also. It really fits doesn't it.

Life by the way like fine wine gets better as it ages. In all aspects.

John B. must still be on vacation, when he gets back will be anxious to see how the walking tour turned out.

Harv: I do remember the fog horns on the River. You could hear them quite well in Media. That's an early memory I have of my Mother saying those sounds come all the way from Chester. Another sound in my memory is the trains coming through Chester in the middle of the night. There were so many during the war.
