Happy New Year to all, and Peace and Love. Hey Bob Burger, or Sailbob. I have always remembered the question you asked me about the high jump record you held at Smedley. Well, I promised to get back to you in a few days, but couldn't because I wasn't able to get the information after continuance research. Now, tonight I saw Mr. Robert "Bob" Crawford at a pre-New Years service at White Rock Church on 3rd and Franklin. I asked him about the record and he told me that he would get the information to me since he also attended Smedley, and is a Chester Upland administrator, along with Mr. Dexter Davis. I attended Showalter myself, so I wasn't really sure about that record. I gave Mr. Crawford the information to the website, and told him that he could actually answer your question about the record himself directly; so look out for that, or try to contact him through the school district. Again, Happy New Year, Fled.

What a great X=mas surprise!! I received a small box containing the "Old Chester Newstand" coffee mug and really enjoy having it! It brings back memories as I only lived two blocks from the newstand when I left Chester to join the Air Force. By the way the music teacher Ms McDonald. Wasn't she married to another music teacher at Smedley before becoming Ms McDonald?

Bill Nix, I was a member of the marching from the fall of 1981 until I graduated in 1985. My first band director was Mr. P; He replaced Ms. McDonald. Ms. Fitzpatrick retired I believe in 1980. Afterwards, Mr. Fred Back became the band director. He was my middle school band director at Smedley. When Mr. Back left Smedley and went to Chester High, Ms. McDonald became the band director at Chester High. However after a few months, Ms. McDonald was sent to Chester High and Mr. Back came back to Smedley.

When I entered the ninth grade, changes were made. Ms. McDonald went to Radnor and the assistant band director, Mr. P (I can't remember his full name) became the band director. Ms. Shirley Warren became his assistant. Mid way during the academic year, Mr. P became ill with pains in his chest and Ms. Warren became the band director. She was my band director when I graduated in 1985. I don't know who became the band director after she left.

Mary Lou I read your post of 2 Nov on how the stores in Chester were decorated with paintings of Halloween. Forgot about that, plus the lighting of the Christmas lights right after Thanksgiving. Boy today the Christmas things are on display right after Halloween. The commercialism of Christmas is just appalling. The good old days were "The Good Old Days".

Hello all, I hope this holiday season brings joy and happiness to you and your family. I'm the community editor of Perspective Magazine. Which is the only publication coming out of Chester.

I'm writing to see if anyone can help me with two Chester stories that I'm working on. The first is a look back at the CHS band. Does anyone have pictures of the band or information on any of it's directors?

Also, does anyone know the name of the superintendent of grounds of the mid fifties? If you have any of this info please e-mail me at: WNixit@aol.com.

Thanks

Not only is Chester full of decay and the poor who don't stand a chance of getting out, Eddystone is also going down fast because of drugs and crime, the people of Aston have been worried they are next and real estate is not what it once was in surrounding areas. the ones who can't move have to stick it out, either they are old or property values won't let them sell or move. Be for real.

I agree with you that kicking Chester around by words is of no use. The CHESTER PAST was a place we all relate to and through this site have recalled memories that are making people that enter here see that the little city on the East coast was a proud city AND people are once again saying, "I came from Chester, PA".. People that are living here now, still love it. They look beyond the decay and the bad apples that are trying to take over. They look at the people that are good, the hardworking, family or civic oriented population. and they have hope for its future.

CHESTER PAST (we are grateful to John for the trip back into time)

CHESTER PRESENT (We know there is much to be done..but like the little steam engine..you know it can, you know it can.)

CHESTER FUTURE ..I HOPE SO.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL and to ALL A BRIGHT NEW YEAR.

I think it is very easy to confirm that Chester is in terrible shape, but, you know that Newark N.J. was in a very bad situation not so long ago ,but is now on the way back (so i am told). Every city has suffered a decline in the last 40 years. There is considerable evidence that a commercial revival is under way in Chester, Pa ,one reason is cheap real estate, and a second is no taxes for 5 years for commercial ventures. There is much housing redevelopment in former projects. Yes there is still an epidemic of substance abuse and crime. The question is ,if jobs (race tracks and commercial ventures) come back will people move back? Despite what you may think Phila., is also hemorrhaging jobs and people, and some sections of Phila are drug ridden and crime nests. let us hope that things will get better, that is all we can do. Well one other thing is, not to kick Chester every chance we can. Happy Holidays

One GOOD reason to move to Chester is the cheap real estate. You can get a pretty nice house for 40 thousand.

My great grandfather worked for the Baldwin Locomotive company as a traveling engineer until his death in 1913. When he died, he was in Lufkin, TX delivering an engine. I would love to hear from anyone who had family that might have worked with him. His name was Charles Frederick Phy, Sr., and he was married to Martha Louisa (Gotwols) Phy. They had four children; Charles, Jr. (my grandfather), Paul, Jennie, and Harry. He was a member of the Oddfellows, and of the Patriotic Order Sons of America.

Thanks Tim, I don't remember the sister but I remember the brothers. One of them was the first one I ever seen climb the tower (smoke stack) at the building. That always stuck in my head. The end of a song by Springsteen always makes me think about that stack. It is from a song named "Youngstown" it goes "Them smoke stacks reaching like the arms of god into the beautiful sky of soot and clay."

This is regarding the taxi station at 6th street in Chester. My dad " Skeeter " Haynes was a taxi driver there in the 20's,and that's how he met my mom. Later ,he was the day foreman at Railway Express Agency in the building in the background. My mom and I would walk downtown from Sun Village, and she would drop me off at dad's office while she went shopping. I would go upstairs with him to meet the trains. He would unload the box car, puy it on a big metal wagon, and take it back downstairs. Dad passed away in 1988,but I'll always have those memories with me. I miss him, and my mom alot. Does anyone remember either of them ? He was also the secretary for the W.E.B.C. for 40 some years. Bev.

To all my friends and those who enjoyed my contributions to John's great site, and even those who didn't, I want to wish each and everyone of you the joy that Mary and Joseph felt upon the birth of their beautiful son Jesus on Christmas Day. May the gifts you give and those you receive be those of consideration, respect and love, the sharing of food with those who are hungry and drink for those who are thirsty. These will be your most memorable gifts, and ones you will not want to exchange for something better.

May 2003 restore Chester to the happy days so that future generations can look back in pride on being from Chester, Pennsylvania, one of the little cities that helped make this country great.

Harvey: Could the sports paper you refer to be the DELCO SPORTS FORUM.. I saved a cute little column from within the pages.. It has little old man with a long beard and cane running as the cartoon charactor.. It begins : Is It really a Jogger's World? Eac day, AM and PM, we se new jogging enthusiasts taking to the highways, school grounds, cinder tracks and grassy parks.

then it has the Jogger's Directory:

Carl Schnellenbach Jim Forde Jesse Soifer Jim Castellan Linda Keyes Jack Klotz Ed Gebhart Charlie Love Dr. Bernie Finneson John Krajek Larry Trout Nick Trainer ..........the article was published on July 5 - 19th 1978.

Also is a article about the Eagles opening Widener Camp on July 9th, 1978. Dick Vermell was Coach

Spotlight on the Old-Timer (was a photo section) In this paper the St. Hedwig's squad of 1933 was featured..

I used to go into Balt during my railroad days the plant was like some middle age dungeon. Also during WW11 and up into the 50s the toilet paper in the "C" rations was from Scott Paper Chester PA. it made me very proud. Wonder how many went down to the foot of Flower street caught a school bus crossed the river on the ferry and picked crops for Birdseye on hot summer days they paid around 10 cents a bushel you would spend all day bent over for a couple dollars a day but then again a hoagie, lemon tasty pie and cream soda was only fifty cents. A beer was a dime and you could stay at the Lindhurst hotel upstairs in the dorm for $1.50 a night at the Itailian riviera. Money was very tight back then also ten years of foreplay. Lost another 1950s downtown regular Phil "jughead" iacona He went to a dance every night but I never saw him dance, hung around Royal billiards regular but was a terrible poole player. he had a tall lanky frame with broad shoulders and looked like a million when he dressed up I remember his powder blue sixbutton benny fondly. he lived within walking distance of Blackies Bottom Up tavern at ninth and Loyd I never heard his parents speak English and his Dad had a wine celler dug in the bastement we took many jug of Dago Red to house partys. I lost track of Phil for the past thirty years and now regret not looking him up. he married his teenage sweetheart Dolores and was with her to the end. Precious memorys how they linger how they flood my soul.

Looking at the anchor of the USS Arizona, from Baltd Anchor, I remember during my twenty years of service in the US Navy, I saw anchors aboard three of the aircraft carriers and other ships I served aboard. Made me feel a little closer to home even though we were sometimes thousands of miles away. My grandfather worked there diring the war years and retired shortly thereafter. Good article

That was beautiful. I remember reading it before and I cry now just as I did the first time. Thank you for sharing it with us.

'Twas The Night Before Christmas ', He Lived All Alone, In a One Bedroom House Made Of Plaster And Stone.

I Had Come Down The Chimney With Presents To Give, And To See Just Who In This Home Did Live.

I Looked All About, A Strange Sight I Did See, No Tinsel, No Presents, Not Even A Tree.

No Stocking By Mantle, Just Boots Filled With Sand, On The Wall Hung Pictures Of Far Distant Lands.

With Medals And Badges, Awards Of All Kinds, A Sober Thought Came Through My Mind.

For This House Was Different, It Was Dark And Dreary, I Found The Home Of A Soldier, Once I Could See Clearly.

The Soldier Lay Sleeping, Silent, Alone, Curled Up On The Floor In This One Bedroom Home.

The Face Was So Gentle, The Room In Such Disorder, Not How I Pictured A United States Soldier.

Was This The Hero Of Whom I'd Just Read? Curled Up On A Poncho, The Floor For A Bed?

I Realized The Families That I Saw This Night, Owed Their Lives To These Soldiers Who Were Willing To Fight.

Soon Round The World, The Children Would Play, And Grownups Would Celebrate A Bright Christmas Day.

They All Enjoyed Freedom Each Month Of The Year, Because Of The Soldiers, Like The One Lying Here.

I Couldn't Help Wonder How Many Lay Alone, On a Cold Christmas Eve In A Land You Call Home.

The Very Thought Brought A Tear To My Eye, I Dropped To My Knees And Started To Cry.

The Soldier Awakened And I Heard A Rough Voice, "Santa Don't Cry, This Life Is My Choice;

I Fight For Freedom, I Don't Ask For More, My Life is My God My Country, My Corps."

The Soldier Rolled Over And Drifted To Sleep, I Couldn't Control It, I Continued To Weep.

I Kept Watch For Hours, So Silent And Still And We Both Shivered From The Cold Night's Chill.

I Didn't Want To Leave On That Cold, Dark, Night, This Guardian Of Honor So Willing To Fight.

Then The Soldier Rolled Over, With A Voice Soft And Pure, Whispered, "Carry On Santa, It's Christmas Day, All Is Secure."

One Look At My Watch, And I Knew He Was Right. "Merry Christmas My Friend, And To All A Good Night."

This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable.....

PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed……..

the new chester city hall is the southeast bank building, right in the middle of ave of the states at 4th street. it is the (old) new southeast bank center, i say that because the old bank buildings at still at 5th and ave of the states. the city spent a lot of money on the renovations. that and the former federal building on 7th street has really changed the city governments buildings. they have about 40 police cars marked and unmarked, vans, mustangs, patrol cars, and durangos and other 4x4.s.

Hi Everyone – First, to Pat McFadden - No, I am not a doctor – in my mid-20’s I trained for a year as a paramedic at DCCC and I was what was then called an EMT II or Paramedic I. There was a higher designation of Paramedic II then but I did not go for that one. I understand PennDot has changed the parameters today. Not sure what they are now however. Those were interesting times – every time we went on an ambulance call in Chester – this was about 20 years ago remember – the Chester police were always there to watch out for us as there were always some teenage thugs who would throw rocks or stones or something at us – while we were coming out in all sorts of weather to help someone who was sick or injured and who needed to get to the hospital . It was all volunteer work back then. I had an early version of a “beeper” but I was also holding down a full-time job. There is a time to stay and a time to move on in life. I moved on. I am not related to Dr. Murray. I ran as a volunteer for about 4 years with the now-defunct Franklin Fire Company ambulance squad from Chester and also in Brookhaven and Lima with their ambulance companies. I knew Bo (Bobo) Swanson, who was also with Franklin, Donald Tees, Thomas Worrilow (now a county detective), policeman Dan Elder and Larry Fiorelli, the police officer who was a neighbor of mine on White St. in the Sun Village section of Chester where he lived with his wife and children. My mother was a nurse at Crozer Chester Medical Center and Larry often would pick her up in his patrol car and get her to work and bring her back during severe snowstorms. I never met but heard about Vincent "Moose" McLaughlin, the firefighter and paramedic who was said to be so powerful that he could successfully perform CPR on the Resuscitation Annie doll we had to practice on in school – but “Moose” was said to be able to do it with one hand, making the lights go on as was necessary for a successful CPR. Even our instructors were in awe of this and remembered and mentioned it in our classes. Everyone else – including me – had to use two hands to achieve the required, heavy pressure to make the lights go on so we could qualify for CPR. Moose was so strong he could easily do it with ONE hand. ALL of these VERY brave and fine police officers and firemen suffered – and some died – as a result of the infamous Wade Dump fire. Our great friend John Bullock has provided a link on his excellent page to information about that tragedy. I saw Larry – once a powerful, big man – reduced to a pale shell and walking with a cane during the last days of his life. While I retain my interest in health and medicine – I used to keep check on Vern Triboletti’s blood pressure when he owned Hutchinson’s Pharmacy on Morton Ave. in Sun Village – my family and I knew Vern for years – and hence the “Gooddoc” name - I am now a journalist today. I was a reporter, staff writer, community correspondent and columnist for the Daily Times for about 20 years. I covered Chester as a community correspondent and later created an entertainment column – called Bar Hopping – which covered the night life scene in Delaware County. After receiving a beautiful award from the Delaware County Licensed Beverage Association, I decided to retire from the column and it is now being done – excellently – by my friend Len Casterline AKA “The Bar Man” This is what the column is called today. He also does the historical pieces from the old Daily Times issues and has been doing this for years. I also worked with and for Phil Heron and while I am not happy that the Time’s Internet presence has been reduced, I can understand the economics behind it. Phil is an excellent editor and a great guy to work for. I am also good friends with Ed Gebhart who knows of this page but don’t expect him to post – he’s not a computer fan. Frankly, neither am I but I do have to deal with computers and the Internet in order to earn a living. In all honesty, I rarely read the Times or any other newspaper anymore. Like most aging baby boomers, I get my news from CNN or MSNBC. The last time I was on their web page was to try and find something out about the shooting death of a gentleman in his early 80’s named Joe D’Aurizio as he was tending his garden in Sun Village. He was shot to death there, in his garden, last summer. I could not find it on their web page but a friend of mine, who first told me about it, gave me one of the follow-up articles the Times ran about this atrocity. You see, Joe D’Aurizio was our landlord when my Mother and I lived at 1119 White St. in Sun Village. He was a nice man, a good landlord and he was shot to death in the garden he so lovingly tended for years. If you go to Vaulclain St. in Sun Village, across from the parking lot, and not far from the row of garages there – almost next to them – to the right and down a bit - there is a small, wooded section where people have private gardens. It is just at the outskirts of Chester, just before you reach Eddystone from Chester Pike, which Morton Ave. turns into there. When he was our landlord – we rented from him for three years before I made the decision to take my Mom and me out of Chester – I was the editor of the Folsom Town Talk at this time - well, 5-6 times each summer, he would stop down, tell me to bring a big paper bag and we would go together over to his garden where he would load the bag up with tomatoes, peppers and such, as he was so proud of what he was growing and he wanted to share it with others. Just recently, some lousy, snake, scumbag, lowlife BASTARD calling itself a “human being” shot him to death there, in his garden. This awful murder received quite a bit of coverage in the Times but – as I said – I rarely read the Times or any paper anymore. A friend told me about it – same name and the age would have been right and then my friend brought one of the follow-up articles to give to me. The killer was never caught from what I have heard. Sad but true. Now, someone here recently mentioned Dr. Dorothy Chacko. I met her several times as my Mom worked as a nurse at Crozer, as I mentioned, and assisted in some examinations when Dr. Chacko, who was on the staff there, needed a nurse. Mom was always taking me to work with her in there as she knew of my interest in medicine. Dr. Chacko was a nice lady, very friendly, an excellent physician but she was also considered a bit of an eccentric as she often walked along the Edgmont Ave. area of downtown Chester looking like a “bag lady” – I saw her numerous times, she knew who I was and we would greet and chat for a minute – then she would be on her way – in her old clothes and her bag, which I think was a canvas bag she carried. She did look like some “bag lady” type. This always amazed me – you see, her late husband was also a physician – and Dr. Chacko had – this is a matter of record, I understand – done some truly remarkable work with lepers in Africa some years before. She was considered by other physicians to be an expert on leprosy, which is perhaps the most horrendous disease in the world. Body parts can literally just start dropping off with this disease. It is also highly contagious so she was taking a great risk with this work. Yet, at one time this was her specialty – and I would be amazed seeing this remarkable, gray-haired, famous physician moving like a homeless bag lady, in old clothes and with what I recall was a canvas bag – through the streets of downtown Chester. Anyway - best to everyone here – and a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to the GREAT John Bullock! Best – Floyd.

I remember sledding down the big hill behind the community building. We would use anything including metal trash can lids. The only thing is we couldn't steer them and would jump off before we would hit the trees at the bottom. I think we invented snow boarding only we stood on a waxed cardboard seafood box lids we got from Penn Fruit or a trash can lid. The neighbors would always know where to find their lids ;)

Keenan's Musical Bar was located at 103 W. 3rd St. It was owned and operated by my mother and father, Joe and Velma Keenan. It was opened approx. 1938 until approx. 1960 when it was bought by the city and torn down. Nan Jones was the organist there for many years.

Hey Dave Grace, I remember the two schools Horace and Dewy (I think ) They were sort of across the street from Felton Fire House. Seems there was a gazebo of stone near the library. Does anyone remember the radio station that had a R&B music show that came on around three or so in the afternoon. I remember running home from school so I could hear as much of it as possible. The name of the program was Judge Rhythm's Court ,with Shorty the Bailiff as the DJ.

Mike Mangan,

Having just moved from Charlotte to Florida all I can say is YIPEE!! made it out just in time. I was there for the last big ice storm three years ago, and I was a grocery store manager!! It was without a doubt the longest week of my life! People were without power for up to 3 weeks in Pageland SC where I worked at the time. My son is still in Charlotte and called last night describing the scene. Hate it for all of you and hope all stay warm and safe!

If you go to the What's new section and click on to its page..in the right column you will find the genealogy section...here you will find the following link at any time (I add it now for your convience) once you have entered it, type Indians in the search window...it should bring up articles regarding your search if there is text available there..

GENEALOGY & HISTORY RESOURCES

Rick Nicholson, rick@dca.net, is in the process of posting the entire "1884 History of Delaware County" by H. G. Ashmead on the

http://www.delcohistory.org/ashmead/ashmead_pg327.htm#chapter32

when this page opens, go to edit at the top of your screen, click on it, then where you see the word "find" (on this page) click on that..a search window will come up, type in what you are looking for EX: Indians ...and if the word appears on that page it will take you to it..

If you have not been to the What's New section, introduce yourself to all the links that are there...It is a treasure chest of information at your finger tips.

This subject has come up in past posts on the Newsstand and are in the archives.

Good Luck in your search.

Hello, Just reading your fantastic web page. You sure have done a thourgh job with all the information. There is only one thing I cannot find and that is the mentioning of the Delaware Tribe of Indians. I know they were quite predominent in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas in that time period of 1850`s and before. My Ancestors were from Pa. and am looking for Taylors. I have found your City Directory which has quite a few listings of the surname but nothing about the mentioning of "Native American Indian". Did I miss something in reading the web page? You have so much good information, you have done a great job and I thank you as a researcher. Arlene (SweetHawk W0man)

The weather here has been ICE, ICE & more ICE. It started yesterday & just ended. The lights went out at about 11PM & just came back on at my house, the people across the street are still in the dark. There are 1.2 million homes without power in the Duke Power system. That represents 50% of their customers. Trees are down all over the city. The airport opened about 6pm. Every thing is at a standstill except the Power Co. trucks. Give me the good old powder stuff any time. Thats what I was used to.

If you are new to the web site, look to the left and you will see a menu (yellow section) of what is here. If you enter each area you will find not only text, but pictures of the oldchesterpa that we all knew, these are shared with us by the mamy of the people that lived and loved the Old Chester..

If you look to the left of this board and scroll down a little you will see under the new calander that is available to purchase (all monies from the purchase of items on the site go to the costs of maintaining it) a box that has the pictures from the reunion in October.. Click there and you will see Mr. Jesse Phillips. He was the shop teacher at Dewey during your time.. He is in several photos. What's up Ronette? I did not know many Kappa's until I crossed over in the Spring of 88. At times, the Sigma's and the Kappa's had cordial but not the greatest relationship. I had a great time at V-State. It really shaped my perspective in life. In regards to our cheerleaders, we had the best in the CIAA. No one could touch the Woo-Woo's. They were and still are a class act that can't be duplicated but imitated.

Many of my pastoral collegues attended Virginia Union to get their Doctor's of Ministry. If I did not live 2 1/2 hours away from Richmond, I would have obtained my Master's of Divinity from Virginia Union. But instead, I went to Duke.

As I was traveling through Richmond on my way back to Durham, I told my wife I will never forget marching in the cold parade in 1986 when Douglas Wilder was inducted as the first black Lt. Govenor; and then I will never forget partying in Richmond in November 1989 when Douglas Wilder became the first African American Govenor in Richmond.

While at V-State, I did my intership at the Hyatt Hotel on Broad Street. I was a Hotel-Restaurant Management Major. One Saturday I was supposed to work as a bus boy, but I decided to call out. Little did I know, this was the day that New Edition, Al B Sure, & Bobby Brown checked into the hotel and ate in the restaurant where I was working. They were performing at the Richmond Colesium. This was a bad day to call out sick. I missed my blessing. However, I did see Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls when they came and stayed at the Hyatt. They were playing the new expansion time at that time, The Charlotte Hornets. The sad part to this story is I remember speaking to Michael Jordan and he looked at me like I was crazy.

Take Care.

Wayne,

I want to say the name sounds familiar. Not anytime at VCU except the occasional party. More of the House "n" & Field "n" if you know what I mean. Anyway that was the feeling you got while there. I of course spent sometime at State...knew a few of the Kappi's there..Antonio & Tommy(came in w/you I believe) and a few other folks. My time at Union was most memorable and I thank God for it because it helped shaped me into who I am today. Lot of lessons learned.

Ronette

P.S. Still laffing on the bball thing....and our band is trying to come up now. But you know what I will give yall down in Ettrick.....the cheerleaders!!

Ronette, you got me on the basketball issue. I was just shooting for the stars but you win some and lose some. While at Union, did you come in contact with percussion instructor for the marching band named Zina. She and I use to march in the marching band at V-State. We blocked against your drum section during the fall of 1988 and after we were finished; we took your drum section hostage.

I went to V-State on a small band scholarship and became drum captain in 1987. My time at V-State was great. Did you spend a lot of time at VCU?

Take care!

If Harry "HiBall" Williams is the same Harry Williams I remember, he joined the Marines with by brother Fred and they were stationed together and came home on leave together. They left school and joined the Marines during the Korean Conflict. I also left school during that same period and joined the Air Force. I believe Harry had a brother stricken with polio.

Kate, and what a time we had. The time of our lives. As you know I always keep your boys in my mind and pray for them. I hate wars. Here we are in our own country, and we have to be afraid od what happen here on our own soil. So many men have given their lives so this wouldn't happen to us. Did you know bin laden was offered to Clinton on a silver platter and he turned it down. He certainly left a mess for Bush. Pray for peace everywhere.

Ronette, I just came back from Chester. I was there for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Once you're in the south, it's hard getting adjusted to the cold weather in the north. In regards to a small world, I have not spoken to Angelo since he was married to Pinky in the early 90's. I heard he was divorced. When they got married, they did not live far from my parents. At one time, they were living in Sun Village. But since the divorce, I lost contact with Angelo.

In regards to CIAA, check out the facts. If I'm not mistaken, our girls won the CIAA championship last year in Raleigh. I did not hear about VUU. Yes, the men's basketball team has always killed us. But, our time is coming. While at Union, did you come in contact with A.J. English. I did not know him personally, but he was a good basketball player. He killed our team on the basketball court. I know he played for the Bullets now Wizards, but I have not heard about him since his days with the Wizards.

Take care

Florence, you are so right, your generation had the best of times in Chester, when life was simpler and everyone enjoyed the neighbors and looked out for all the kids. The next generation wanted more but I don't think they got better b/c the world changed and we had to go with it. The war in the 60's changed everything & everybody and now another war is on the horizon. Nothing remains the same, we have constant change in our lives. Peace, Kate

I think that I had the best city childhood anyone can have. You cannot say the same about suburbia living. We knew everyone, they were all friendly, and never stopped us from playing. Most of my long time friends are gone, but I still remember them. We had some wonderful times together. And sometimes wouldn't we all give something to see and spend time with them again. Everything outside was always kept clean. Windows were so shiny, curtains so starched, the front sidewalk, swept and scrubbed and any dirt in the street was swept up. I think most of us were satisfied with about anything that we received. We all went to school because we knew it was something we were supposed to do, didn't dare stay home.

I noticed that a couple of people who were discussing getting water at the local springs did not know for sure where the bottles came from. Stretch your memories. Back in the forties and fifties every drug store had a soda fountain. They made their sodas with syrup that came from the big soda producers in glass one gallon jugs. If you were a regular customer, it was easy to get the druggist or soda hop to save you some empties.
