Why do you people let yourselves be baited? Be grown ups and ignore the messages that are offensive to you. Have a good fourth and remember what the fourth is all about. There is enough fighting in the world, why add to it. Baiters hate to be ignored so ignore them.

During the late fortys early fifties dances were held throughout Delaware County at churches and schools. On one ocassion, Rosemary Clooney appeared at Ridley Township High School. While singing one of her ballads Jasper (Cool Cat) let out a yelp for no reason whatsoever. Rosemary kept her cool and didn't flinch. The audience was quiet and remained so while she was singing her best. I believe Jasper felt very small when he acted foolishly. Rosemary died today at age 74. She was one of the best singers of all time and will be sadly missed.

As a kid I can remember our parents taking us to visit a traveling museum called the "Freedom Train" It has remained in my memory all these many years. I wonder if anyone else remembers touring the train. What I can remember most was a manikin dressed as a soldier and the face was super imposed on it by what i believe the sign said a new technique called the holigram. I wondered before posting if there was any web link and there is.

http://www.freedomtrain.org/ft_home.htm

Enjoy the read a this train did stop in Chester, PA about 1947...and is a part of its history..

Joe C: if you go to the side panel and into churches ...enter...then go to Ukrainian churches. in recollections there is a photo from the Ukrainian nite and dance held in 1967 at the Ukrainian Hall on Thurlow Street. It has now been demolished to accommodate the city's plans for the improvements to 291 otherwise known as 2nd St. or the Industrial highway.

John has also added the pictures of the church.

Hey Keywestmike, sounds like we probably knew a lot of the same people. I remember being VERY upset when my dad made me go to Archmere after I graduated from Holy Ghost (Class of '69). ALL of my friends were going to St. James and I couldn't understand why I couldn't go there too!!! Last time I was through Chester was summer of '99. Although most of the places I knew or hung out at were closed or gone, good old JIMMY JOHN'S was still open! I remember that on most Saturday nites, my dad and I would go buy a car load of hoagies at Cal's and head out to the Rt. 202 drive in. Even tho we had all those hoagies, I always made him stop at Jimmy Johns for a few hot dogs before the movie!

I have been in Florida for over 30 years now, and have lived or gone to school in just about every part of the state. But no matter where I have lived or worked in FL over the years, I have ALWAYS run into at least one person who was also originally from Chester! Small world!!

Mr. Bullock: I was ever so happy to see the information that you have made available to the good people around the world. It is most enlightening to know that the Polish community in Chester, PA has still an active membership.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see that the customs and traditions brought from Poland to America are still alive.

You are a very fortune people to have such a forum to remember your past life.

I have been reading many of the messages on the newspaper stand and your memories remind me of so many of the happenings in my childhood. We are not so much apart in our happy memories. I am also enjoying your history pages and the picture history that you are putting on your website.

Hey, George, I think you've got every right to make fun of a poor old lady who wears lipstick on her cheeks instead of rouge. Especially if you're just reminiscing with an old friend on a public forum.

But you've got to remember that Patricia doesn't bite her tongue when she writes...she just keeps it in her cheek.

To Florence - so many thanks for refreshing my memory about the McGees. Yes, I know you are right about the correct address. God, it was so many years ago... :-) I believe that you and I have exchanged some memories before. Your Dad and my Dad were both friends and fellow paperhangers together. And your brother John - a hell of a nice kid and a friend of mine from Smedley, who left this world far, far too young :-( :-( Anyway. Yes, I remember little Larry who sold papers downtown - he carried them behind him in a red wagon - the kind we used to use for fun - you'd start those rascals up by running with them and then jump in with one knee and roll for awhile - and he looked like Chico Marx in the face but yes, he was hump backed. My late cousin Jim - one of my favorite people in life -was a cab driver in Chester at the time (Bell cabs) and he told me once that the "word was out on the street" that little Larry was to be left ALONE at all times. Even the tough guys back then had a code of honor - the little man was never mugged or bothered, as far as I know, as he went about his paper rounds. The world, sadly, has changed in more ways than one. Anyway - as always - my very best to everyone on the Old Chester PA page.

The history of lipstick is quite interesting, and I'm sure you are probably aware of its history, but, just in case you are not, it was originally created to add color to vaseline, which everyone used but they were bored with the colorless effect. So, a beautiful red color was added that gave the ladies a "vaseline that glowed and shimmered" to apply to their lips giving them a moist and wholesome look. Then because so many people had bad teeth, the red color just brought attention to their lips, behind which dwelled the teeth - in most cases. So, the creator had to come up with something to make the lips stick while smiling. Thus, the invention of "lipstick". But, as time went by, people became more aware of hygenic needs and could afford dentists, so they began to smile while wearing "lipstick". Much to their amazement, this marvelous "lipstick" enabled them to smile, still retain the color on their lips, and show off their beautiful teeth.

However, lipstick was also applied to the cheeks, eliminating the need to "pinch" the cheeks and having all friends, family and neighbors do likewise when in their presence (it was humiliating to have someone "pinch your cheeks". Everyone was going around pinching each other's cheeks, just to have a more pleasant encounter to gaze upon. In some cases, people pinched their own cheeks several times a day to reassure themselves they were healthy - which was a very dangerous practice, indeed). Later, it became a sign of endearment, but not so in the early days - people became so used to "pinching cheeks" it just went on and on and on).

So, the ladies discovered that by applying lipstick to your cheeks there was an added benefit. It made the skin soft and supple and forestalled the inevitable wrinkles because now, not only did the cheeks look healthy, but they were benefitting from the moisture of the vasoline.

So, that poor lady had wisdom of which you were not aware.

Now, the next time you decide to buy rouge, remember that lipstick is just as effective and actually "sticks".

Wow! I just saw the flood photos. I had been fishing that day at Cape May and was shocked when we drove up 95 and saw the houses. My friend Moose used his boat to go rescue some people. Well, you must remember that I said I could only go as far as 1950 regarding Chester's history. But I do remember the short hair coming into style while I was still there. But never having had good thick hair and a beautiful nape, I always wore my hair long and would sleep in those neck-breaking curlers every night. Furthermore, my hair refused to grow past my shoulders, so no matter what, I couldn't do much with my hair. So, I can well imagine the DA looking good also on gals, but they never would have had the effect on me that the guys' nape did.

The McGees - Florence, that is one branch of my family I have never been able to find. Did the McGee's you knew have a son named Freddie; and was the mother's name Evaline? Evaline McFadden was sort of an outcast, but she had ten or so children (maybe that's why she was an outcast, don't know). The only married name I have for her is "McGee" and I believe Freddie, whom I did meet as a child, had red hair and freckles but quite good-looking - probably a rascal too.

Sloppy Joes is that the restaurant where the cook (Joe) used to always be smoking while he was cooking. They had the best ash burgers in the city. That's also where I had my first Sprite. My dad used to take me down there when I was a kid. He would sit me at the counter order me food then walk across the street. Hi Everyone! Believe it or not - re monkeys - my Dad had a friend whose last name was McGee and they used to call him Fibber McGee, after the old radio show Fibber McGee and Molly. That was before my time (I was a product of the TV age) but I've heard the old shows and I enjoy seeing them in some old movies (I'm an old movie buff). Anyway, when I was a kid, a couple of times Dad and I visited this "Fibber" McGee -he lived, I recall, right across the street from Smedley or else right in that neighborhood, and I remember that little monkey he had in the cage. I think it was a spider monkey but this was so long ago. It was a cute little thing and naturally I wanted a pet monkey too, but Dad told me he would never have one for a pet - it had a habit of trying to throw it's feces through the cage! Later, I realized that some animals should not be kept as pets but it seemed like a good idea at the time. :-) Anyway, Mom and Dad let me have a cat I found in the backyard on Dupont St. I named her "Puttins" which was a form of "Pudding" as I loved vanilla pudding. I had her from about 5 years old to about 13-14. She died in Dr. Beatty's office at 24th and Providence. He was a good vet and a nice man - is he still around? I hope he is.

Jocko - The name of the haircut had nothing to do with what the boys were looking for. Our guys may have thought it but they weren't as bold as today's boys (or girls for that matter). And, Sophie said it was STARTED in the Italian neighborhood. Many Italians were barbers and good ones, plus the fact that most of them had a wonderful head of hair. My boyfriend at the time was pure Irish and he had a DA. So, don't take offense where none was intended. We're all sure you and your friends looked great with your DA's, as did so many others at the time. I wish they would bring it back.

Florence - Your monkey's poses remind me of my little cockapoo, Toby, who everytime I wanted to spray his mouth with a "clean breath" smell, he would turn his back on me, twist his head around, snarl and sneeze, repeatedly - and that was just because he saw the spray bottle. Consequently, bad, bad breath, all the time, but a cute smile. The antics of animals are hilarious. But you, dear lady, are to be commended on taking care of that monkey long after your little boy was no longer a little boy.

Well Patricia Nothing ever comes easy. Each evening I would let her out and scrape and scrub her cage. She would busy herself seeing what else she could get into. I had to coax her back in with her dinner, or threaten her with a broom. She was just like a kid. You should have seen her poses when she didn't want to go back in. I have often thought abought a book.

SOPHIE: That question concerning our guys' haircut in the late 50's came from my own recollection. I asked that question one time in an earlier post and no one responded - so, all I could remember was "Duck's Tail". See, like everything else in life, if you wait long enough, you'll get the answer. You are absolutely right it was "DA". Somethings you have to lose in order to win. Thanks so much for responding to that.

And, that "DA", created, as you say, by those sexy Italians, has always been remembered by me. To this day, I still look at the back of a man's neck. If I don't like it, I forget about his face - he-he. True story. Thanks again, Sophie - I'll bet you felt the same way I did.

Now, monkeys - how funny they are. However, I have been meaning to ask Florence, how did you handle their "rest room" needs? And, you had that monkey for so many years, you could write a book about her.

Donna I always gave the monkey a raw egg, it was good for her fur. One day I decided to see if she liked hardboiled eggs. She cracked her usual way, which was like a baker, broke it open and when that little ball og yolk rolled out it scared the heck out of her, everytime it rolled she jumped.

Hi after reading some older posts Florence and Pat helped me to remember a funny summer we had growing up because of a monkey. Yes, Pat their were for real monkeys running loose in Chester. I remember one summer all of sudden one day my mom was out back cleaning our pool and a monkey jumped out and scared the you know what out of her. Well me and all my neighborhood friends were fascinated by this monkey. He was the neighborhood's pet. He was real funny too! We had a pool and so do our next door neighbor, this monkey would run back and forth from fence to fence and hop in Betty's pool and our pool. That monkey never scared us from going in the pool either. My mom and Betty would try to give him banana's and stuff we thought monkey's would like, but guess what he liked most: all the junk we kids would give him like chips, frito's,pretzels, dots, juju bee's, good n plenty and stuff like that. Our parents would tell us to not feed him that junk and to try and leave him alone, but we wouldn't listen. Afterall he was our monkey now, he came to us. Unfortunately some wierdo up the street an older guy got the monkey in a cage one day and said he was gonna keep him. One day some young kid poured baby powder all over him, what a trip that was!

Dear Pat Mc Fadden

You are wrong as to the name of the boys haircut.

The name was "DA" for Duck's Ass.

We weren't allowed to call it that so someone redubbed it Duck's Tail. BUT DUCK'S TAIL WAS NOT THE NAME.

The haircut started in the Italian neighborhoods.

My uncle Jim "Ham" Hamilton had one of the old Ramblers. It had the shift buttons on the dash. We were going fishing one of the many times we went and I didn't know it until it happened, we hit a bump and back flies his seat. Scared the crap out of both of us, but more me because he was driving. He just looked at me and said "well you going to grab the seat and pull it up or are we going to have to drive all the way to Blackbird Landing like this." Then he told me that it broke during the week. He loves his fishing. Still lives on 20th & Madison Street. One time years ago he got this old beat up aluminum row boat with a lawn mower motor on the back. I think he bought it off one of his buddies at the ship yard for like 40 dollars, you know the kind that you had to wrap the rope around by hand. Well he calls me up and ask me if I wanted to go fishing in his new boat. I said sure come pick me up. I think I was 14 or 15. Well he pulled up in front of my house in McCaffery Village with this thing tied to the roof of his old station wagon. I don't know what looked worse the boat or the car but they were real close. My mom looked out the door and then look at me and said are you sure you want to go fishing? Yea Ma I'll be okay were only going to the resivior. We drove all the way out to the resivior and found out that you weren't allow to put boats in it. This was about the 4pm time frame during the week and it was summer. So my uncle says to me where can we go? I said hey we can go down the West End Boat Club, I work there so they won't say anything. That's exactly what we did launched that aluminum craft in the Delaware. Motor puttering away we went out by the Commodore Barry, dropped the little anchor and we were fishing pretty good for a while, until the tide started coming in and pulled the anchor up and before you know it we were moving pretty fast right toward the shipping channel. With oil tankers sucking toward them. Then the worst thing that could happen, happened. The lawn mower wouldn't start. My uncle's wrapping the rope and pulling as fast as he can. Me, I was rowing frantically with the one oar we had. Then the second worst thing that could happen, happened. The rope broke. I was scared to the point of tears and I know my uncle was just as scared. He grabbed the oar and started rowing as fast as he could. Another oil tanker was coming down and if you know anything about big ships they suck a lot of water in, which I learned that day. It seemed like we were going nowhere. It was about 7pm by this time and we were in deep do do. By this time I was terrified, I was yelling and screaming for help from anybody who might hear me. Well someone did hear me from one of the passing ships. They radioed the coast guard which the Boat club monitored and the next thing I know there was a boat there with a tow rope. I didn't know the guy and thanked him he pulled us to the dock at the club then took off. I never saw him again. I thanked God and never went on that boat again. I also never told my mom because she would have never let me go fishing with Uncle Jim, again.

Hi to everyone! – And – To TomCHS76 - great posts. Loved that account about the bicycle. Yes, you’ve “been there and done that” too, haven’t you? Same here, my friend. Anyway. About Susan Forster - You wrote, “I have to admit I had a little boy crush on her. She was tall and had a smile that would make you melt.”. Yep. That’s her. Hell, it would have been impossible NOT to have had a crush on her. I had a secret crush on many of the girls I knew in Smedley – Ellen really bowled me over however – my Mother was one of her nurses in Crozer when she was a patient there in the early 1970’s - but I was such a goddamned geek that I didn’t know what to say to any of them back then. Seeing many of them at that last reunion taught me that true beauty never fades – Susan, Donna, Pat, Ellen, Dot – others – “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. Great words. Keats wrote that. You wrote, “Did you know her family?” No, I did not. I only knew her from Smedley. I THINK her husband came with her to the reunion twelve years ago, but I am not sure, but I recall that – as everyone was all talking – mentioning spouses – she mentioned that she was married and that she was now a nurse. That’s all I recall. I have not seen nor heard anything about her since. When at Smedley, I lived on Dupont St. in Chester. It’s between Walnut and Chestnut, and East 12th St. runs by it. – going north – and right past East 12th St. is I-95. At the time of the reunion, I was in Folsom. I never knew Kenny, at least not by name anyway, or else I have forgotten, which is very possible. I’ve known a lot of people in my life. Very, very many. Too many, I think, sometimes. The intervening years have been very busy ones. Anyway. I may have known him at some place and time, but I do not recollect. Anyway - I hope that ALL of our friends from the past are alive and doing well, today. And to Pidipat – please keep the quizzes coming, OK? I enjoy them. While I cannot always – well, most times :-) - ha!-ha! – answer the questions, I do enjoy them as I know others do. Acquiring knowledge is always good. As always – my best to everyone on the Old Chester PA site – and thanks again, John Bullock.

Floyd: Another memory in reference to Kenny he had a yellow Volkwagon "THING" they were called that's because they kind of looked like a jeep, but by law could not call it a jeep. There are 2 yellow ones or should I say what's left of them, sitting in Alfonse Sanbe's lot at the exit of Kerlin Street on 95 northbound. Makes me think of Kenny. I would help him work on his Volkwagon. Now, that I think about it I would never admit that I helped him work on his "THING". LOL

donna, your story reminds me ,of our grade school trip to RIVERVIEW BEACH via the wilson line from chester,we all had a great time there and decided we would catch the late boat.well we saw the boat (wilson liner) leave and we went back to the amusements ,only to find the park was shutting down for the day!! we said we were going to catch the late boat, well the worker said to us" you see that wilson liner going up river toward phila.well that is the late boat and you guys missed it".one of the guys said he would call his dad and he would come and get us.well after about an hour his dad shows up in his 1950 mercury coupe(james dean style).so about 5 of us pile in,i had two people sitting on me. when we got to the chester ferry his dad suggested we get out and strech our legs while waiting for the ferry.as we piled out ,a fellow in front of us yelled out "oh my god look at all the kids thar guy has,i wonder how he can afford to feed them!"we got home without incident after that.i don't know how we didn't break the springs in that mercury.

Geo: Come to think of it we never bought any meat from Sadie's, either. Only remember getting my orange drink and a pack peanut butter tastykakes on the way to and fro school. If mom sent to the store for anything I always ran over to McGlones in Highland Gardens. Which brings up another story. After McGlone sold his store I think it was to a guy named Phil who married Stephan and Jimmy Dunn's sister. Anyway, I was in the store getting something for my mother. When I notice the top of this Afro go across the front window real fast. I took me a second and I didn't even realize it at first but I was flying toward the door. The lady at the counter, Phil's wife was yelling something. Next thing I was out the door running up the street chasing this guy he was on my new ten speed and I was no match he had to much of a lead on me even though I ran nearly to Ward street in the Gardens. I remembered his back and what he was wearing. I also had a few choice words for him as he rode away. I was huffing and puffing, with my hands on my knees. Next thing I know up pulls this guy in a Cadillac. He ask me what happened and I told him. He told me to get in. You know back then you didn't think like you do in todays world when someone tells you to get in their vehicle. I got in his car and we went riding around. That's when he told me who he was and that him and his wife bought the store off McGlone. We rode around for about 20 minutes when I noticed this guy with an Afro coming out of his house. He was all sweaty and didn't have a shirt on. So, logic kicked in why is this guy so sweaty if he just came out of his house. Also you have to remember A/C was not a necessity in the 70's. We were riding through Highland Terrace. I told Phil to stop I think that's the guy. He says you just can't grab somebody off the street and accuse them of stealing your bike. I said bet me, I'm from the village. I grabbed the guy by the throat and through him up against the wall. He was scared sh--less and I was raging mad. Phil's yelling let him go, let him go, so I did and he told me to go back to the car. Then he tells the guy if he did steal the bike he better give it back or he was going to call the police, but before the police would get there he would let me back out of the car. Next thing I know Phil was in the guys apartment (actually it was his grandmother's) and out he comes with my bike, but the seat was raised all the way up and the handle bars were also turned up, that quick. We put the bike in the trunk and went back to the store picked up the things that I didn't even pay for yet. Then he drove me home.

Hi everyone I just wanted to share some old memories with ya's that came back to me this past Saturday. Well I had the pleasure of cruising down to the Jersey shore on Saturday in our brand new car with air conditiong(ahhh, what a difference) thank-God to the person who invented that. Anyways, two memories that came back to me were as we were going over the Commodore Barry Bridge I remembered the first day that bridge was open to the public and they let us walk over it! I can't remember the year that was maybe someone else will and tell me, also me and my girlfriends from People Street well we walked over alright, but we took so long goofing off getting over there, that the time limit was done for the day coming back. So here we are 5 little girls from Chester kinda stranded now in Jersey! And we Loved it! The bridge police had to call one of our dad's to come and pick us up. It was a great fun day for all of us ,except Cheryl's dad. Then when we came home back over the bridge Saturday night I still remember and miss very much the huge statue of Jesus with his arms opened wide over our city that used to be outside of Sacred Heart Hospital(I was born there). I''ve always thought that was a real poor decision to take Jesus statue out of Chester, but what could we of done, who knows. I just miss seeing that when were approaching Chester on our way home from the Shore.Theirs another memory I have but I've written to much now so I'll save it for later. Take Care everyone and stay cool!

Floyd: Wow, just goes to show you learn something new everyday. Never remember an "r" in the name. I lived 2 houses from Susan before we moved to McCaffery. I have to admit I had a little boy crush on her. She was tall and had a smile that would make you melt. My mother and her mother were best of friends, so I was always over there. O'kay I admit it, checking her out wishing I was about 7 years older, then just maybe I might of had a chance. Did you know her family? Anyway a funny coincidence happened years later, if it is the same Susan you are talking about. We moved to McCaffery Village. I used to work on cars with guy the next row up from me his name was Kenny. A few years later not sure how many though it could have been maybe 5 or 6 he ended up marrying Susan. I don't know how they met or even if they are still married. I was not invited to the wedding because Kenny and I never really hung out together he was a bit older than me. It just seemed weird to me that 2 people from opposite ends of town would meet like that and I knew them both, but they didn't know I knew them both until a few years later.

Hi Tom - You wrote, "Floyd you mentioned Susan Foster would that be the same Susan that had the beautiful smile and dimples, lived at 22nd and Edgemont?" Yep, you're right, same one, as pretty and friendly as ever, as I saw at the reunion. However, it is Forster - with an "r". Been having a great time going through the old Smedley yearbook, The Raider. Jeez, you know, I THINK I may still have some copies of the school paper, The Spotlight, floating around here someplace. I know I tried to save them over the hectic years. Joe Zakorchemny and I collaborated on an article or something back then which was published. Susan worked on the "Special Features Staff". A bunch of nice kids who put out a great little paper. It took time - and experience in the real journalistic world - to get as cynical as I am today. :-) Oh, well...Back in the 1970's, in between my youthful forays between Jeffery's on Edgmont Ave., Colonna's on Welsh St. and Murphy's - all in downtown Chester - and the Seven Seas at 2nd and Lamokin - is that place still around? - I sometimes visited the Bank Tavern. I think a no-name poster on this subject may be right - I think someone named Shahadi did own it at one time. And Mr. Bullock -I've said it before and I have to say it again - thank you SO MUCH for this fantastic site! You have done a wonderful thing, sir. I learned here that some old friends, sadly, are gone - Bill Wallace, the mechanic - yet some still around - e.g. Highball who ran the grocery store. I have heard from people I never thought I would hear from again and also people whom I did not know before - this page made it all possible. Thanks again, my friend.

Floyd you mentioned Susan Foster would that be the same Susan that had the beautiful smile and dimples, lived at 22nd and Edgemont?

Kate I think Sarge's name may have been Ed and the guy I remember as the butcher may have been his brother Gene. As George stated that the time difference may put them at the age of late 40's or early 50's at the time when I was going to the store. Gene appeared to be older, he wore glasses and had gray hair, but I'm pretty sure it was not the father, he may have past on by then. The old lady was Sadie and she was the mother of Sarge.

Geo any input?

Tom: I'm probably going back a little before your time. The Sarnocinski family originally owned the grocery store on the corner of 3rd & Ward across from The Ward Grille. The "old man" had several sons, Gene was one and Ed was another, not sure if there were others but I'm sure someone will tell us. The sons would help the father out as he got up in years. (This was late 40's early 50's) I know for sure that Gene owned the Bank Tavern for a while. I believe they also had something to do with the White Swan cleaners also. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the sons had opened a grocery store up in your neighborhood.

pat Email: Residing: at home Date: 20 Jun 2002 Time: 22:33:14 Comments Floyd murray...it is so great when you mention Marie in your writings, i enjoy them and thought your Mom was a nice...nice...person

Hi Pat – thank you for your kind words about my Mom, Marie Murray. I think I know who you are and it’s nice to hear from you again. Sun Village, right? Early to-mid 1970’s. You and your fine family were always such good friends. About 20 years ago, I trained as a paramedic and was certified as what was then designated as an EMT II or Paramedic I and ran on the ambulances with the old Franklin Fire Co. and Brookhaven and once in awhile Lima. I did this as a volunteer for about 3 –4 years. After we moved to Folsom, Mom fell twice and had to have two hip replacements. I looked out for her and the doctors were quite concerned about blood clots, which is a risk after any operation. She could not get around well anymore so I fixed up living quarters for her on the second floor of the house we had in Folsom. She had a bathroom up there, a bedroom and a sitting room and everything else she needed. I bought her a TV and she was watching An American in Paris with Gene Kelly on channel 12 on Saturday night, October 17, 1992. She always loved musicals. I was downstairs watching one of my Clint Eastwood videos – she never did like my taste in movies :-) – but she did enjoy Silence of the Lambs. She liked ‘ole Hannibal :-) That night she called me upstairs and said she did not feel well. She had been out of the hospital for a couple of months but I took her back for tests whenever they were scheduled. She was sitting up and I took her blood pressure, which I was keeping a regular check on –she had hypertension - and I got a zero reading. No systolic, no diastolic. There are different variables in blood pressure – it can indicate shock, for example, if the two numbers are widely spaced apart. A zero reading means only one thing and that’s death. I could barely hear the brachial artery through the stethoscope. I told her I was calling 911 and – you knew Mom and her Irish temper – she said, “I’m not going back into that goddamned hospital!” Then she fell back on the bed, unconscious. I heard that awful gurgling sound – I hit the phone, called 911 but I was falling apart. I had seen people die before – it just happens – but this was different. She was my Mother. I tried CPR and mouth to mouth resuscitation and then I did something I will never be proud of – I panicked and ran downstairs and bounced off the walls for a few minutes. By that time a Ridley Township policeman was pounding at the front door, with a portable resuscitator in his hand. I’ve heard a lot of complaints from people in my life about the police – Hell, I’ve even been arrested myself, twice, once in PA and once in Texas - but I think the world of these men and women who work as Police Officers. When you’re wrong, you’re wrong and I was wrong both times. And when a crisis occurs, the first thing you WANT TO SEE is a Police Officer, since they will always do everything they can to help. This officer did. He went upstairs and did what he could – in another few minutes, a fully-equipped ambulance was at the door. I stayed downstairs – I couldn’t go up there. When they brought her downstairs, on a stretcher, she had a tracheotomy inserted, which is a is a surgical opening made into the trachea for airway management. For those confused – a tracheotomy is an immediate procedure. A tracheostomy is the surgical creation of a stoma from the trachea to the overlying skin. The barber – and piano teacher – and my Dad’s good friend from Chester - Andy Buffano had one. It’s for a long-term artificial airway, as it removes the entire larynx. Only skilled surgeons can do this. I was trained well, for a year, but never that far. A tracheotomy is the last resort, you see. The lead Paramedic on this team was trained for this. I wasn’t. But when I saw her coming down that night, with that tracheotomy, in her throat, I knew she was gone. As I said – this is the very last resort to save a life in an emergency situation. She died that night. She was already dying when I was taking her BP. I knew it – that’s why I panicked. Pulmonary embolism. Our family doctor – Dr. William Cook from 24th and Providence Ave. - told me later that nothing in the world could have saved her – not even me - she had a blood clot which formed after the last operation and it moved through her circulatory system – and it hit one of her lungs. That was it. Anyway. Moving on. Some memories truly hurt. Anyway, to the nice young lady who sent the fax today – Yes, I want very much to help with this project. I am aware that our friends, Joe and Blaze, are planning a Smedley 1965 reunion. I will be contacting one or both of them soon. When Carol (Vanier) and Donna (Turner) helped organize the first one – which, as you know, was held on May 12, 1990 at Holy Savior – I was able to help also, in my own small way. I was still living in Chester back then, in Sun Village, and I was the editor of all the Town Talk newspapers which covered all of Ridley Township and much of Delaware County. My friend, Mark Corson, who also lived in Sun Village, told me that the reunion was taking place. I helped to publicize it through announcements in the many Town Talk newspapers. Reunion announcements were very much the “grist for the mill” for such small newspapers and I made sure they ran for so many other people – why not our own great Smedley class? I think it helped – I hope it did, anyway. I ran the announcement each week until the event itself. That was a great night – I saw you there – sweet and beautiful as ever - and Donna Chetty, lovely as ever – even more pretty – she was working as an actress in NYC then; “Hank” Riccardi – the nicest guy in the world – tough, but he understood strength in gentleness; Terry Morris, who came all the way in from Missouri - a good friend ; tall Perry Jones, a very good guy – a “gentle giant” if there ever was one; Ellen Katzmire – my secret crush through all of Smedley and Chester High; Kay Alexander, smart, pretty and intelligent; Susan Forster, an R.N. now, doing some good in the world. I could go on and on. I bought the “new” class picture of us, taken at the reunion – thanks to Carol, I also have the tape of the event. Plus, after my recent move, I made sure my yearbooks were at the front of the “unpacking list”. Yeah, I found The Raider. Was looking at it all today, after your fax – I planned to contact Joe or Blaze anyway, to help them with this project, but your fax made me realize – now is the time. I do tend to put things off. Anyway. There were only about 42-45 of us there that evening for the reunion. Later, we all “repaired” to the Wharf Tavern in Aston and continued reminiscing. It was a wonderful evening – good people, good memories – we all know. That’s what’s important. Anyway – I no longer edit Town Talk but – when I contact Joe or Blaze – there is a very unique way I can help in these reunion plans. I have a toll-free number and I am quite good at tracking folks down. A little skill I learned over the intervening twelve years. I will give them this number – and my personal number. Apparently, we have until May, 2003 to round folks up together. I just hope we have not lost anyone in these 12 years. Anyway. ANYONE from our class – anywhere in the country or the world – will be able to call me at this number - at no charge to them. I will keep records and pass them on to Joe or Larry (Blaze) or Pat and whoever else is organizing this effort. I will work through them. They can post it openly, when I send it in to them. This is my contribution this time – this is how I can help. And again – to Mr. John Bullock – you created this page – out of the sheer goodness of your heart. Look what it has turned into – it has touched so many people. Thank you, so much.

Geo, you mentioned Sarnocinski was that the same Sarno's that owned the corner grocery store at 10& Harwick St? I used to stop in there every morning on my way to school. He would always have my pint of orange drink waiting for me. His mother would sit in her little chair in the corner in the morning, but usually on the way home from school when I stopped in she would be back in the house that was connect to the store. I think it was his brother that was the butcher? Then the wife and sons came to work there. I remember the one son was Mark, but don't remember the other sons name or the wife. I know she was a good looking older woman (well older than me anyhow). I saw her years later she was working at the JC Penney's in the Granite Run Mall. I was walking through and she called me by name. I was impressed that she remembered me from the days at Pulaski Jr. High. My daughter was just a baby so that had to be at least 16 years ago. Was just wondering he didn't seem like the bar owner type.

I'm a little early today because of a commitment, so here are the new questions.

I noticed yesterday that someone criticized one our answering posts. Please do not take that personally and just ignore them. This person criticises everyone and we don't want to lose you as a player or contributor to this site. I personally apologize for that person's actions.

OK People - Here are questions for ya'. I will pose questions today and Kate will post tomorrow. We felt it was all too confusing and fast-paced to have both eras combined. So, if that's alright with you remembering that my posts only go as far as 1950, while Kate's will deal more with the 60's, here we go:

1. One of the most popular pool rooms in Chester was "Birney's". Other than their pool tables, what was Birney's most well-known for?

2. In the very early 30's what two highly dangerous and contagious diseases took the lives of many children?

3. In the early 40's what terrible disease took the lives of young children.

4. What drug store in town was owned and operated by the father of someone to whom we owe a great big "Thank You"?

5. At the Great Leopard skating rink, one way you could get a free pass for next week was to win a skating race; what was the other?

6. What was the name of the hair cut worn by the teen boys in the late 40's?

7. Was it considered "good taste" for a girl to ask a boy to dance at our dances?

8. On Mother's Day, a special event took place in the city to honor all mothers. What was that event and what did we wear to honor her?

9. The boys had their long pocket watch chain making them look "hep" - can ya' dig it, and what piece of jewelry did the girls wear that was very popular at the time?

10. At the 1950 CHS Senior Prom, called "an oriental fantasy" who was crowned "Lotus"? Hint: She worked with me at Whelan's. I mentioned her name in an early post. If you can't answer this, who was crowned Venus' Venture at CHS Junior Prom? I have also mentioned her as a former playmate (not Hefner's playmate - mine). .

Hope you are enjoying this?

Florence - I get such a kick out of you. A home for old monkeys, eh? Wow, I wonder if I would know any of them. I do recall now meeting a fellow with a monkey one time when I was in the Poconos. Think it was a spider monkey and that monkey was mean - some are, I guess. I also suppose that at one time or another Chester had an organ grinder with a monkey, because otherwise, how could we be so aware of them. The brains of animals amaze me; especially elephants. Those tiny little eyes in that enormous head don't miss a trick.

Before anyone asks, yes this has to do with old Chester because they certainly had their share of big apes and monkeys.

Well Pat, that monkey came from the Dela.Co. S.P.C.A. My youngest son worked there for quite a while, he loved animals. The one's he could bring home he did, but the monkey came when I was out. It was kind of a sneak past mom job. Someone couldn't no longer take care of her.You know she wasn't crazy for bananas, she ate what we ate. She loved fried potatoes and onions and raw eggs, and other people food. she came when she was 12 and was 36 when she left. She live's in a monkey shelter for old monkey's.

KATE: - No, I will not post answers until 24 hours have passed. Rules were set up for reasons and they will be adhered to. Answers will not be posted until 24 hours after the questions are posted and winners announced. This gives more people more time to join in and answer all questions - even though the right answers may already be there. It is much easier for people to know and accept the correct answers and the winner. And, hopefully, post some questions of their own, all relating to the best of times - Chester in the 40's and 50's.

Forence - yes, you delightful person, my telescope arrived three days ago with a set of binoculars that are unbelievable when it comes to distance. The binoculars alone are worth the price of the telescope which in itself is awesome. A friend who is extremely knowledgeable in telescopes is coming tomorrow to teach me how to use it. So, beware, I may be able to see into your front room - he-he!!

Today was fun - let's keep it up. Now that I am refreshed and know I have friends out there, tomorrow's quiz will not be as "serious" as today, somewhat relaxed and a few sillies, but but only 100% accuracy of questions will be accepted. See you tomorrow and hope everyone has a good night's sleep and wakes up tomorrow with your entire family healthy and happy and thanking our Lord for another day to do unto each other as we would do unto ourselves. God Bless.

Kate - Yes, I am done for the evening - told you it was work. However, answers to all questions should wait 24 hours, as we agreed upon. So 24 hours from 4 o'clock Chester time, will be answered. Until then, quite a few questions posted here should inspire people to post their thoughts, etc.

Florence brought up something about yarn that I was not familiar with and anyone who remembers that or that type of knitting, crocheting, etc. should contribute - and, oh my gosh, if you ever owned a monkey, Florence will be more than happy to contribute memories of her funky monkey. By the way, Florence, where in the world did that monkey come from? Chester was never known as a habitat for monkeys, so I am really curious. My cousin had a baby alligator at one time, but that's the closest I thought Chester got to "wild life". Love to know the history of that.

Incidently, Safeway market had a huge display today of a "new" and on-sale item. SPAM - with cheese. Oh lord, dare we ever start another conversation on SPAM? Better not - but now it has cheesebits inserted. SPAM will outlive us all - God willing and the pigs and goats are still around. Let's hear it for our pigs and goats and Hormel!!!

Did you get yout telescope yet?You know what was funny, when one of my son's 30 snakes got loose and wound up in my neighbors basement, it wasn't too big, about 4ft. he had a ton of them and everything else. 5 little animals escaped out of the aquarium, I spent all day looking for them, I found 4.

A couple weeks later my neighbor's husband was pouring soap powder out , and he didn't know what this dried up little thing was, but I did.

KATE... The Car was the Corvair. I know that one quite well. Bought a new 64 Convertible. Ralph Nader wrote a book "Unsafe at any speed" lambasting the handling characteristics of the Corvair. The early models may have been inherently dangerous if driven recklessly. My 64 handled like it was glued to the road. They changed the rear suspension for 64. Too late, the damage was done. Production ceased in 1969.

Kate: actually the very first man in space was a Russian...40 years ago by the name of Gagarin.

Yuri Gagarin's made a 108-minute orbit around the Earth on April 12, 1961.

He died in a 1968 during a fighter jet test.

In 1961 the U.S. launched Alan Shepard into a 15 minute suborbital flight. Which would make Shepard the very first U.S. Astronaut in space. This flight was made because of the strong tention between the U.S. and Russia in being the first to conquer Space.

Kate's Quiz - No. 2 is Gloria Steinham. Takes awhile, but I think that's the correct answer. Although there was another very much older lady who inspired Gloria - Betty ?.

The first man on the moon was - John Aldridge? If so, history is very interesting because a man by a similar name was the first one, according to our history books, to land on Plymouth Rock - John Aldan.

Hate to interupt the fun but thought some might find this interesting and useful...G

Latest and Top Virus Threats W32.Klez - Last month alone millions of people worldwide were affected by the W32.Klez virus outbreak. Some variants of this worm use a technique known as "Spoofing." When this happens, the virus randomly chooses an address that it finds on an infected computer as the "From:" address that it uses when it performs its mass-mailing routine. You can find a removal tool for this virus at Symantec Removal Tools.

W32.Nimda - This is a fast-spreading Internet worm. It arrives as an embedded attachment, README.EXE file, in an e-mail that has an empty message body and usually, an empty subject field. It uses a known vulnerability in Internet Explorer-based e-mail clients to execute the file attachment automatically. You can find a removal tool for this virus at Symantec Removal Tools.

VBS_VBSWG.AQ - This VBScript worm propagates using Microsoft Outlook, and arrives in an e-mail with the following characteristics: Subject: Shakira's Pictures Message Body: Hi: I have sent the photos via attachment have fun. Attachment: ShakiraPics.jpg.vbs

Harvey - I don't know why I couldn't remember 50 cents/hour as minimum wage - but I think you are right. That was my salary at Whelan's and by the time I got finished charging makeup behind their pharmacy counter, I wound up with about one dollar. To make matters worse, in those days, we girls all wore brilliant and dark PURPLE lipstick. Someone said that when a group of us walked down the street together, all they could see was purple lips.

And, my very first pay - at probably $1.50/hr -was in a small envelope containing cash - no taxes taken out in those days and not everyone had a checking account - fear of banks I suppose after the crash and depression of the early 30's.

Kate's question about "minimum wage" alone could inspire a lot of stories from our readers.

Hi Florence - I just read your latest post. I was working on the questions while you were posting, I guess. I said we would start Sunday afternoon, forgetting that it's 4 o'clock back home while it's only 1 o'clock here. So, I may be late for you, but just right for me.

You have such a great memory, you should have no problem with this contest. I'll try to make the next set of questions more entertaining. For some reason, I'm having a hard time getting my silliness back.

Well, here we go with our new contest. All questions and answers in this first segment will be centered around the mid 1930's to the end of 1950. Hopefully there will be questions concerning the 50's and 60's contributed by Kate or anyone else who cares to contributed.

As before, all weapons must be checked at the door, no harassment of players, and no tomato or rotten egg throwing and no dirty looks. Players are given at least 24 hours to answer and the winner will be determined by the time the answer was posted. One point will be given for each correct answer and the winner is entitled to post a star (*) with his name when signing onto the site. Some questions will be taken from what has previously been posted regarding life "in old Chester", others from information already provided by John on this site, and still others from the information given in Ms. Frysinger's book. HERE WE GO:

No. 1: Many schools and churches held dances in Chester. However, there was one place that was neither a school nor a church and it held dances on its rooftop. Name that establishment.

No. 2: McLaughlin's Coffee Shop at 8th and Welsh sold a drink consisting of either a chocolate milk shake or a root beer float. Name that drink.

No. 3: During WWII, two sisters who played accordion, danced and sang entertained the servicemen at the USO center in our area. Name these two sisters - last name also.

No.. 4: How many movie theaters did we have in Chester in the late 40's, and what were their names?

No. 5: What was "The Democrat"?

No. 6: What was the chief topic of conversation on the school bus taking the girls to Notre Dame?

No. 7: Why were "penny loafers" called penny loafers?

No. 8: When private parties were held by teens, for birthdays, holidays, etc., where in their home were these parties held?

No. 9: At Christmas time, what charitable organization accompanied carolers, rang bells and hung black pots for donations?

No. 10: What was the name of the bridge in downtown Chester, above which appeared our famous "What Chester Makes Makes Chester"?

OK, not so hard. Ready, set, go!!!!

Patricia, lets get something going. I wonder if we can have some fun . Let's not pay attention to insults and tell the younger people to post their memories no matter what. I remember once when I went to roller skating rink for the first time, iwas sore for two weeks. I remember I had to be in the house before the Goodwill's last bell rang at 8:30pm , no matter how old I was. Do you remember making a tail of yarn with a bare thread spool and 4 nails and then sewing it together. I rmember the older girl who lived next door to us at 9th and Walnut sts. sitting there and making doll clothes for my Deanna Durbin doll. I remember the Mac Theatre was a half of block a way and it didn't cost much to go.Sat Morning theatre at the Mac, news reel,Bring em back a live Frank Buck serial, all the different cowboy movies, Johnny MacBrown, Hop a long Cassidy, Rough Ryder,Roy and Dale, Gene Autry and Gabby hayes and Happy trails to you , Untill we meet again. Sgt.Preston of the Yukon and we could go on and on. I do remember all my very best friends and miss some of them dearly. I think we all miss our childhood and what went with it. The Way We Were.

An Open Message to our Humble Webmaster.

John, in the name of everything that is good, can't something be done about the person who constantly criticizes nearly everyone's posts?

Not only has he driven away some people who add so much to your site, but now, newcomers hesitate to post for fear of being criticized.

The last thing you had in mind when you created this wonderful site, was to have everyone's post criticized. I notice that posts are getting fewer and fewer and it's just a matter of time before they will level off to zero. You might as well call it "The criticism site". Come on and post folks, so we can all have a good laugh at your expense. Nobody wants to be subject to that. Joan, in her last post, was in a sense defending what could be caused by this guy, and he even attacked her.

This guy is trying to destroy this site and he will succeed if nothing is done. I want this site to endure for years to come, so again, I say, it's not hard figuring out who the "destroyer" is. If someone is clever enough to send viruses through the internet, surely there is a way to block certain posts.

I post this in all due respect to you, John, and I'm sure you knew all the above without my telling you, but I do care and am concerned.

I realize this virus problem is universal and practically every computer in existence is attacked at least once. However, because there is one particular person who posts here and has been "out to get me" for a long time, and because I was the FIRST PERSON here whose email address was used to forward porno, etc., I feel very strongly, very strongly, that that person is behind a good portion of this problem. I have received very good advice on how to handle this individual and I am just biding time, at this point. The worst thing that has happened is that it has created suspicion among friends, alienating some old friends, and oh, this individual has so much to answer for - if not here, on a higher plain of existence.

On the subject of renovation of Chester, I have been reading of all the projects taking place and it lifts my spirits and delights me. I do understand that the violence is intense and worrisome. However, I really need to say this again. I'm sure you realize that the perpetrators are out-of-work, poverty-stricken and drug-addicted individuals who have no self-respect. Granted, there are indeed people who get a thrill and have a need to live by the sword, but I do feel that if jobs were created in Chester (which seem to be evident by the renovations), and many drug programs initiated, we could possibly once again take pride in our city. It's not impossible. Lives are being changed everyday for the better, everywhere.

When people feel needed and loved, they don't resort to violence. These are just my personal feelings, and I wish I had the resources, finances and expertise to do all of the above.

I pray that God, in his mercy, bestow his blessings once again upon Chester, PA, enlighten the disturbed individuals and restore the pride everyone felt at one time in a little city lost in history that at the beginning of this fine nation, contributed its blood, sweat and tears.

I have a question for everyone whose e-mail address is listed on this website. In recent weeks, I have received an enormous amount (sometimes 4 per day) of strange e-mails, ALL with attachments. I have not opened any of the attachments, but I believe the sender is attempting to spread a virus.

The only place my e-mail address is public is on the oldchesterpa.com website.

Last week, one of the e-mails was sent using John Bullock's address. When I contacted him, John warned me not to open it -- that someone had hacked this site and sent e-mails to everyone in John's address book.

Is anyone else experiencing this? It's been happening for several weeks to me. Thanks for your input.

Florence:

I recall reading recently that there are plans in the works regarding just that subject. That the city is doing what is necessary to achieve a safe end for the residence and new business they hope to attract back into Chester. Unless this is accomplished business that requires 3 shift or overtime hours won't risk the safety of their employees. A Business has to carry insurance and if an employer has to carry higher priced risk insurance to open, they will look elsewhere.

The City is aware that: The draw back to the city is Safety for the people not just a plan to renovate and rent out space.

In today's times it says: Many good things are happening in Chester, but all of them may be for naught if the city can't do anything about the gun voilence that has terrorized its neighborhoods . Their is an editorial on page 18 of the paper.

The folling is from Johns' WHAT's NEW section. You can see the City is on a forward move. *********************************************** Renovation work is well underway on the new City Hall at the foot of 4th & Market St. and also sidewalk renovations on Market St. between 4th & 5th are progressing. Also in this block will be the new Delaware County Historical Society's library and museum and I understand that a restaurant is in the planning stages for one of the other two buildings to the north of the old 1724 Courthouse.

*********************************************** There are pictures that John took last week. Check it out. ********************************************** I don't know if anyone has been to Providence RI but the Mayor there took a decaying city and turned it around. It started in the 70's, but really seemed to move about 5 years ago.

In the past 5 years they have moved highways and railroad tracks, uncovered and moved rivers and torn down places to rebuild.

tom;you are right ,but highland ave runs into it also,it is a big chunk of land, the city has plans for its own park and marina up to the barry bridge,i will be watching that with great interest,i hope they can bring it off.outside of a boat repair(tugboat)and the trash to steam and other refuse processing operations there is not much there now. certainly peco is out of there.i think most of peco's operation is now in eddystone.todays daily times has an article about an architectural firm buying 418 ave of the states,(the former district court bldg),which was vacated a number of years ago because of building codes violation(s).the district courts are now in the old federal building which the city acquired a few years ago.social security is in its own building at 8th and crosby.

Hgc: Actually the building you are talking about is on Front & Jeffries St. next to the old West End Boat Club. That's where they are refurbing the old PECO generating plant and putting the marina.

When I was in my teens in the early 40's I seem to recall a large illuminated sign in the west end off 2nd st, probably on the electric company plant that said "Electricity is Cheap in Chester". Does anyone else remember that?.

to Joe Rollo: Thank you so very much for responding on the board, Joe. I think it helps us all if we keep communication open between ourselves and keep the people on the board advised as to what we are receiving that appears to be from someone connected here. The worst part of this is that I had a feeling my email address was still being used but have never been advised by anyone who might be receiving them/it. So being "kept in the dark" concerning this is not helpful. I hope you forwarded that message to abuse@(name of your carrier). This really helps. And I hope your other computer problems quit soon too - Norton really is a savior.

I have been wanting to mention this for a long time and keep forgetting. I'm sure we are all familiar with Thomas Kinkade's beautiful and nostaglic paintings. There is one painting of his called "Hometown Memories" (of all things) and every time I look at it, it reminds me of Buckman Village. The houses are not connected, but my gosh, it brought back "hometown memories" to me. If you can gain access to that particular painting, see if you agree. In the painting, it's obviously early evening, the streets are all wet from the rain, and the street curves just as in BV. The warmth of the lights shining through the windows of the homes is beckoning those on the street to hurry on in the house from the cold and rain - there's a hot meal waiting for you.

On another note, it's not difficult figuring out who our obstreperous "no name" is. Namo (I dub this person "Namo") has been doing this for several months now and will never give up its sadistic enjoyment of tampering with the people on this board and what they post. Namo seems to feel that only what Namo posts is worthwhile. So, we should consider the source and not stoop to Namo's level by responding. Namo is more to be pitied than censored.

Since we are talking about locations thought I might add, the Pandandle of Florida is linked with the eastern part of Fl. and there is a big difference, that is why I choose this area. Being from the North I like a change of seasons which the panhandle gets even tho it is not as extreme, we get 30's in the winter at night but beautiful weather in the day time. Humidity is as bad up North as it is here in the summer the difference is WE have the Gulf & the emerald coast(the water is green) & the sand is white. And the ocean breeze is with us most days so we all have our preferences & Fl. has enough room for everyone as I'm sure Az. does.

With all due respect to Mr. Malick, as I type this, Arizona's northern Mogollon Ridge is experiencing a wild, out-of-control fire. The Mogollon Ridge contains beautiful forests and vacation homes for many people from Phoenix. Two or three weeks ago, Prescott Valley, approx. 150 miles northwest of Phoenix experienced a disastrous fire in their cool, luxurious forests. Last week, an area in the Tucson area had a wild fire, covering many acres. Phoenix is experiencing a dreadful drought right now and we are praying for rain. However, the Prescott Valley fire was started by, of all people, a forest ranger who had just received a nasty note from her ex-husband and decided to burn it. I think from now on, she has to pick up her mail in Phoenix.

Phoenix heat is NOT a "blow torch". On our hottest days, it's more like little hot pin pricks, and it's always wise to keep your entire body covered if you are outside. The only people who have died from the heat are those foolish enough to lay out in it in order to maintain a beautiful tan, fall asleep, and look like a cooked lobster in their coffin.

Arizona USED TO BE a dry heat. But because so many easterners and mid-westerners missed their trees and shrubbery, and of course, they had to have a pool, we do now experienced some humidity in the summer. However, if you are of a romantic nature, Phoenix nights are incomparable. And, a lot of people take blankets and snacks out to the desert just to watch our sunsets.

The utility companies do a fantastic job of keeping us cool. I have personally witnessed these heroic men take their own lives in their hands, working until all hours to re-wire or re-connect generators that have blown. And, they make special concessions for the poor, elderly and people with special needs who cannot afford the cost of air-conditioning.

There is no other State in the USA that has the highest (southern AZ) and lowest (northern AZ) temperatures. And in the center belt, the best weather all year round. No other County than ours (Maricopa) has the very best, very best weather in the country from September to June.

So, welcome, Joan. I hope you'll be very happy here as so many people have before you.

To Mike Silva,

For the former Chesterites that moved out of the area...the two major destinations seem to be Arizona and Florida. They each have their own appeal.

Personally, I dislike really hot weather, but I detest high humidity. That automatically excludes Florida. So it's off to Arizona for me.

Thanks Floyd: My Mom died also, but I will tell my sister that Earl Wilson died. It may be that the article she read is about another Wilson. According to her the person is retired not to far from where she lives. I mentioned "Earl" Wilson because that was the only name I could remember by the name of Wilson in the Times.

I'm so glad I asked regardless. Your post is very interesting. Again thank you.

Hi to Caroline :-) – You wrote “Do you remember Earl Wilson?”. Yes, I do – Wilson was a New York based syndicated entertainment columnist whose career spanned over 30 years. He was a portly, rather short fellow with close-cropped hair who did, indeed, appear in the Daily Times – being syndicated, and being a national entertainment columnist, the Times picked him up on syndicate. But he was based in New York – his tagline was “That’s Earl, Brother!” His pix appeared in each column. He died about 30 years ago. He was, by all accounts, a nice man – he always ended each column with a reference to his “BW” – Beautiful Wife. As I have mentioned on this list before, I did write an entertainment column for the Daily Times for a number of years, starting in 1985 and ending in 1999. I won an award for it. Today, that “Bar Hopping” column I created is being carried on wonderfully by my friend Len Casterline – they changed the name, that’s all, and now it’s under “The Bar Man”. Len is doing an excellent job. Frankly, I thought the column would be killed when I left, but that was just my ego. I created it and it’s still going strong today. That concept I created had an interesting genesis – I explained everything in my farewell column and yes – - I never made a secret of it – I based the Bar Hopping column on George Grieco’s old Needler but, being interested in history – of all sorts - I knew there was a genesis even beyond that. George was a nice man – I knew him – Wilson apparently was also, by all accounts but I never met him, of course. Winchell - by all accounts - was a lousy pig of a human being. He was way before my time, and I never had the displeasure of meeting him. I never met Larry Fields from the Daily News either but the people who knew him tell me that he was a good guy who – shall we say – gave in too much to the temptations that his position afforded him. It killed him in the end. Anyway – here – for anyone who is interested enough – is the last Bar Hopping column I wrote for the Daily Times. It’s on record out there in the files – it may have been the best column I ever wrote, I don’t know – it hurt like Hell to write it – it was quite painful to write and, frankly, I was drunk at the time I wrote it - . But I think it came out rather well – I still hear about it today, once in awhile. And yes – Earl Wilson is mentioned as an inspiration to me, as he was. But please tell your Mother – Earl Wilson is dead. She must be thinking about someone else. This last column for the Daily Times will explain the rest of it. I submitted it on June 15, 1999. That column appeared each Friday, like clockwork. Bye for now. Bar Hopping Page Done

I've always believed that, in life, the shortest "good-byes" are the best ones. Say "goodbye" and then turn away and never let anyone see what you're truly feeling. Never let your emotions show. Never show love, sadness, pain or fear. Never explain. Never look back. Never break. It's easier said than done, believe me. Guess I'll have to forgo my rules this time. After fourteen wonderful years, this is my last Bar Hopping column for the Daily Times. It's simply time to move on. It has been a long, wonderful, unforgettable ride especially when you know that I predicted, when this column first started, that it would only last for about six months. I also predicted that Clinton would never be president and the Internet was only a passing fad. Nostradamus I ain't. My file cabinets were filled with copies of my columns from years past and about three years ago I threw most of them out as I just needed the space. My editor, Trish Cofiell, assures me that they are on file at the paper's headquarters, which is a lot bigger then the apartment I live in, so I guess my efforts will live on for posterity in some way. By my own calculations, I wrote over 720 weekly columns chronicling the nightlife scene here in Delaware County. My Mother's death, a serious bout with pneumonia, moving from Chester to Folsom to Media, and a few other setbacks accounted for about ten weekly columns being missed over those years. Since I never took a vacation, as badly as I needed one once in awhile, I guess this is not a bad average and it's still over 720 columns. Well, here's the "long goodbye" with apologies to Raymond Chandler and to myself, for breaking my personal code. When the late editor of the Daily Times, Stu Rose, wanted to create a nightlife column, he asked three writers for the paper to turn a sample column in. He wasn't sure just what he wanted, but he said he would know it when he saw it. I won. I based this column after The Needler, an R-rated paper which a Chester printer named George Grieco published from 1938 to 1982. My version was G-rated but it was the same idea - tell people what's going on and where it's all happening, throw in some humor but I left out the adult jokes and "cheesecake" photos, although I managed to get in some good shots of some beautiful girls, usually wearing bikinis, in the column here and there. I had no name in the column back then, as it was called "Duffy" as Stu had named it after "Duffy's Tavern" an old radio show from the 1940's. I didn't particularly care, as long as my name was spelled right on the paycheck. I tracked Mr. Grieco down, shortly before he was to retire to Florida, and wrote an article about the original "Duffy". In the journalism field, we are all spawns of each other in a way. You can trace this column and others like it back to Walter Winchell's famous New York column "Broadway Through a Keyhole" in the 1920's and 30's and then to Earl Wilson's New York column through the 40's-70's. More locally, the late Larry Fields in the Philadelphia Daily News kept the tradition and, today, Stu Bykofsky for the same paper is doing the same thing but in his own way. It can actually be traced back farther then Winchell (who was the basis for the great but brutal movie "Sweet Smell of Success" - about a nightlife columnist who abused his power) but I think you get the point. George Grieco adapted this idea and created a paper about Philadelphia, Delaware County (since he was from Chester) and the Atlantic City and Jersey shore clubs, thereby localizing it. When I met him, he gave me some copies of the old Needler from the 1950's that I still treasure. I truly hope that he is alive and doing well today and enjoying the Florida sunshine. I took the concept from Grieco, who had taken it from many others, and I only adapted it for the Delaware County nightlife scene. I sincerely hope it will continue with the Daily Times in some form or another now that I am gone. When this column first started, bar ads were almost always in the sports section, as many people in the bar scene remember. Now the ads have their own pages. I hope this continues. Thanks to this column, I think I learned the true art of interviewing. I can take everyday people such as bar owners, bartenders, waitresses, waiters, and customers and quickly put them at ease, build a rapport with them and have them talk to me. After all, not being politicians or celebrities of any kind, they are not used to being interviewed for publication and they are almost always a little skittish at first. When the average person knows that he or she is being interviewed for publication in a paper that will be read by thousands of people, they automatically tend to freeze. But I always remembered those words - from T.S. Eliot, I believe, to a young writer - "Be one on whom nothing is lost" and I know that everyone, no matter who they are, has an interesting story to tell. I found the trick is to let people know you are not going to hurt them or ridicule them in print - journalists have tremendous power which is often misused, even in a column like mine - and people tend to be afraid of anyone from the press. It's a shallow fear, really. The "bad guys" will usually get their just desserts while the press only holds the spotlight for a while, at best, and then retreats back into the shadows. I preferred doing what I have done for fourteen years with the good people in the bar scene. I never hurt anyone and I only tried to help. I think - and I hope - that I have. Every benefit that was held for an individual or a family or another good cause, which took place in a bar, had immediate priority in this column. While the words of thanks from the people I hope I helped are distant today, the memories are not. If I have a legacy with this paper, than this is it. So thanks - thanks to everyone who kept me going for all these years. Thanks for the memories - to Paul Bernier, in his 80's when I interviewed him. He was a remarkable artist whom most people told me was dead. When I tracked him down in his home in Drexel Hill, he gave me what is probably the only written record of how he created those incredible lit-from-behind paintings which still awe patrons at the Frontier Saloon in Folsom (we all wait for the lights to go on that Indian girl, don't we guys?) and other nightspots in Delaware County. The details of his now lost art were only published in the Daily Times. Thanks to Bob Ryan, a true "gentle giant" of a man if there ever was one, and who is today a cult film figure thanks to his appearances in the crazy but funny Troma films like "Toxic Avenger" and other movies. Bob granted me an interview when he worked in local bars and he had a long list of movie roles. He should have gone farther in films than he did - but he died too young, only in his 40's, when his great heart gave out. He was a terrific character actor. We became good drinking buddies and I miss him still. I'm grateful also that I was allowed to bring some risqué fun into the Bar Hopping column and one front page photo of a bikini contest winner I interviewed became, I was told, the best-selling newsstand issue in the Daily Times history. I take a certain pride in the fact (so shoot me, OK?) that I was the first, and probably the last, person to get photos of winners of wet T-shirt and lingerie contests into the paper. I waited patiently for the screams of outrage, which always came, but heard nothing when I published photos of male strippers. Go figure. Thanks also to the girls who let me arrange photo shoots of them, especially Nicole Wood, who told me at length, more than once, about her very sincere acting aspirations, and who won just about every bikini contest I covered in the area. Nicole was very well known to the readers of the Daily Times before Playboy picked her as their April, 1993 centerfold. The Daily Times had her story first. Thanks- in a way, I guess, - to a remarkable but corrupt magician who did amazing magic tricks at the bar the likes of which I have never seen before, and then pulled his biggest trick when absconded with a lot of money. I got some very good columns out of him, although it turns out he was not such a good person. I learned later exactly why he would not let me put his picture in the paper. I wonder where he's at today? I am grateful to every bar owner, bartender, waitress and waiter who helped me create a column each week, which is not an easy task over these many years. It can be more grueling than you can ever imagine. But the recent award from the Delaware County Licensed Beverage Association was a very true honor for me in my life and that alone made it all worthwhile in many ways. When all is said and done - and it's done - I want to thank Trish Cofiell most of all. She is my extremely talented, wonderful, beautiful and first-rate editor for all these years. Trish was there for the hard times - she sent me get-well cards and called when I was sick, looked the other way when I was late with deadlines (as I am with this column), but also brought me into line when she felt she had to. Plus she always allowed me to get away with nonsense if she knew my activities would make a good column - which it always did. Her judgment never failed. Stu had the concept, and I created it but Trish Cofiell made it what it was. It was Trish who made it all worthwhile for my readers and for myself. Thanks most of all to you, Trish. Years ago, when I was sweating over an old IBM Selectric, awash in LiquidPaper and ready to carry out that mess to the Daily Times the next day, my Mother would usually walk by my den and ask "Is your column done yet?" She was always so proud that I wrote for the Daily Times. Yeah, Mom. It's done. Goodbye.

I have had a dummy address which I named "a worm alert" as the first address on my list for a few months now. I read about it on one of my yahoo groups and thought it would be a great safety in addition to my virus software. I figured it couldn't hurt to just add the extra name-if anything it would help me know if I was sending something and was unaware. Good luck everyone!!!!!

To Floyd Murray and everyone: If you will recall, I posted that my carrier instructed me to forward any mail containing viruses or notifications from the postmaster about "returned mail" we never sent in the first place. At that time, they also advised me that it is indeed a FEDERAL OFFENSE to send this stuff through the internet. I forwarded to my carrier every one I could. The viruses caught by Norton I could just quarentine, delete, etc. My carrier answered every forwarding I sent to them. PLEASE DO THE SAME, PLEASE. Nothing would satisfy us more than to have these tyrants caught and imprisoned. I beg you to forward them to your carrier.

To Jack Rez'51 - You brought up something I have never forgotten. The brother of one of my classmates at Rez, Billy Gallagher (Rose was my classmate) nearly died from blood poisoning by playfully jabbing himself with an ink pen (before ballpoints). Rose and I visited him in the hospital and I can remember Rose really being distraught. We didn't know if he would live or die. Now this would have been 1945 or 46. He survived, thank God, but to this day, I get very concerned if someone even writes with ink on their hands or elsewhere. My son told me recently he used a pen to pinpoint where he hurt - I went ape!!! Glad you survived and than God, again for penicillin. And again, Thank you God for inspiring the people who substituted that dangerous ink for something safer.

Contest begins Sunday - because I can only go as far as 1950 concerning Chester - others may want to contribute concerning 50-60-70.

Two items in Granny's post, penicillin and ball-point pens hit home with me.

As a 2nd Grader at Holy Saviour in Linwood, I was stuck with a straight pin by a classmate who had picked it up from the floor. It happened on a Friday at 1 pm, by 3 pm I had trouble walking. The next day I could not walk, the leg was up like a balloon and high fever. The Doctor came and said that it was rheumatism. By Monday, my Grandmother had serious doubts about the diagnosis and called antDr. Gamboy from the Hook. He immediately called for an ambulance and I was sent to Chester Hospital.

After blood tests it was determined to be Blood Poison. I received the Last Rites and was not given much hope of surviving.

This was during WWII and penicillin was a new drug and very difficult to get for civillian use. Fortunately, my Doctor got the drug and every 3 hours I got a shot of penicillin in my tender butt. This went on for nearly 10 days.

After 6 weeks in the Children's Ward, I went homethanks to Penicillin.

Ball-point pens were introduced after WWII. Those of us in elementary school in those days remember the fountain pens and the inkwell in the desk. The early ball-point pens had ink that smeared the paper and your hands. The Nuns outlawed them.

Floyd:

Do you remember Earl Wilson? My sister lives in Arizona and mentioned that recently she saw a newspaper article in one of their local papers about a reporter named Wilson, she could not remember his first name but remembers my Mother reading his column and he had a picture in the paper which she recognized. In the article it mentioned the good old Chester or Daily Times she could not remember. We still call it the Chester times on occasion. It seems he was telling how he started in the business. He has retired thereabout. Seems to me I read that column too.

I also remember a lot of the things on that list so I assume they were still being used a little later. Our first phone number was Tremont & the first 2 letters was used to dial the number. Pat, sounds good to me, a time frame makes good sense.

Hi Everyone – Man, do I love this page! Yes – back when I was a kid, living on Dupont St., my Mom DID use a stopper with holes in the top – in an old Pepsi bottle, of which there was many around as Dad used to drink Pepsi one after the other – Dad found some chewing gum in a bottle once and called the Pepsi company to complain and after 40 years I still remember some Pepsi truck rolling down onto little, narrow Dupont St. and unloading about 3-4 wooden crates of Pepsi at our house. It was not a scam – in the summer, Dad used to like to sit on the front porch of our house at 622 Dupont St. – the house is still standing and the front porch, is intact – unlike most of the houses and front porches on that sad street – and drink his Pepsi and I was there, I was about 7 years old or so, the day he found the gum in the bottle. He was furious, to say the least. But the company did make amends, to their credit. I say this as someone who much prefers Coke to Pepsi – and Dad did not have to go buy his Pepsi’s at the corner grocery store for awhile – first it was Harry’s, when I was very, very young, and then Sordi’s in the 60’s – with Mr. and Mrs. Sordi and their lovely daughter Maria, a teenager at the time. They lived in the back of the store, their apartment/house next to Logan’s Movers, which is still there. Dad was a good friend of Jimmy Logan when they were kids. I remember him as a huge, very nice guy whose son took the business over later - but, anyway – one memory really leads to another, doesn’t it? Anyway – back on track - Mom did use his odd, makeshift item to sprinkle the clothes with water before ironing them. It was half cork, which is where it fit into the bottle, and the top – as I recall now – was red and white. I had completely forgotten about this until I read Joe Rollo’s post. I was just such a kid then – but yes, she did use an item like this. Now, a little off-topic but – regarding these viruses. One of my best friends here in Media is a fellow who is a computer systems analyst who works on main frame computers for major companies and has been working with computers for over 25 years – he was using the Internet “before” there WAS an “Internet”. While I’m OK on certain things with computers, I can’t hold a candle to this guy – as friends, he has bailed me out of several hellish computer problems I’ve had, which is not good as I need to use a computer for work, and all I had to do was buy him a couple Heinekens in return, not a bad deal considering what he charges his clients. Anyway, I was telling him about the problems on this great page. He had not heard of the klez worm specifically but said there were several such “worms” out there which attack PC address books and do this destructive nonsense. Again, the best thing to do, my friends, is to update your virus definitions DAILY. I am doing this now, every day. I use Norton AntiVirus. My friend, Mark, actually knew and worked with Peter Norton years ago and did not like him much, personally – but for those of us with a lower level of computer expertise, Norton, it seems, is excellent. Mark created his own safety programs and tailored them to his own specific work but he is one of the sorts who can do this – I’m certainly not. But I was telling him about the problems on this page. To TomCHS76 – I was surprised to hear this is a federal crime to send these things but you are right, sir – it IS a federal crime. As well as it should be. The problem is that, while it is easy for the right people to track down the SOB’s who create and send this viruses – we’ll leave it at SOB’s but I am sure many of you can think of much more descriptive terms for these scumbags who like to wreck other people’s computers – while it is easy to track them down, many of them are working offshore especially in the Philippines and places like Singapore - ergo, they are out of federal jurisdiction. But when they are tracked down in this country, they are subject to federal prosecution. I am not pretending to be an expert on this matter – there are no “experts” on any subject but Mark is damned close when it comes to computers, especially main frames. This information is from him, as I told him I wanted to pass it along to my nice friends on the Old Chester PA page. The good news – Norton and all of the other major anti-virus companies have a system of computers set up which DELIBERATELY WANT to get all of the latest viruses and worms. These computers are programmed to look “vulnerable” so they can be targets for all of the latest computer-wrecking viruses being sent out by these SOB’s. These programs – I cannot explain it technically - but the technicians call them “honeypots” since they look vulnerable and “lure” the viruses, and the perpetrators of same, into attacking them. Then there are other programs, called “tarpits”, which “catch” the viruses and hold them so that the anti-virus technicians can analyze them and find a solution. As Mark said, the creeps that are sending these things out really don’t know what they are doing and once the technicians “catch” the virus, they can quickly figure out a solution and post the “cure”. This is why we all need to keep our virus definitions, whichever ones we choose to use, updated daily. As soon as a “cure” is found, it is posted and for the techs who know how to do it, these things are relatively easy to crack. He said these anti-virus techs are specialists – and since the SOB’s sending these things out – for “fun” or whatever other stupid or perverted reasons they have – really don’t know what they are doing, the viruses are easy to break. But this goes on dozens and dozens of times daily – new ones are always being created – so the answer is just to keep on top of it and get a new “fix” as soon as it is posted. Meaning update daily, OK? :-) To John Bullock – hope to meet you someday, sir, and thank you in person for this wonderful page – you have done a remarkable thing which means a great deal to a great many people. And, as always, my best to everyone here on the Old Chester PA page!

Good morning!

As you can see above, I've added the suggestion above about slight modifications to email addresses in order to help avoid spam. This way, folks can still communicate with each other here but perhaps not get added to as many junk email lists.

Also, in many cases it might be helpful (and interesting!) to know where our former Chester friends are residing now so I have added a place for that on the form.

Early June entries have now been archived thus making the page smaller and perhaps you won't have trouble "reloading" as Pidipat described below.

Happy Reminiscing!

John

For Old and I do mean Old Chesterites...

How old is Grandma?

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born, before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses,Frisbees and the pill. There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens.

Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon.

Your Grandfather and I got married first-and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I, 'Sir'- and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir.'

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by The Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt,or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was only 11 cents a gallon.

In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in, and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "

Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood,"hardware" was found in a hardware store, and "software" wasn't even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.....

and how old do you think I am ???.....

This Woman would be only 60 years old!

Joe Rollo: - I'm not only older than dirt; I'm older than sin. Can't remember how to sin anymore!!! The cork bottle sprinkler I had completely forgotten about, but yes, I remember, then they came out with the steel cap with holes in it that fit on the bottles, remember? And just the other day I was stomping my foot on the bottom of my car looking for that switch to dim the lights. What wonderful memories.

I am still amazed that we used to keep some of our food on the back porch in the winter time to keep it cold. And, I really miss the hemogenized (don't call it that anymore) milk with the CREAM ON TOP left by the milkman on our back porch. Now, we have every convenience man could devise and then some, but something is missing, isn't it? We are so spoiled, how would we ever survive in a national disaster? Most people today couldn't begin to imagine how to make the basics, like bread; but worse then that, thousands of women and men DO NOT cook anymore. I've heard women say they hate to cook. so they don't; I think it's because they don't know how. They are missing the satisfaction of nurishing the bodies of those they love. How spoiled and selfish can we be?

OK, about another contest. Should we plan on starting one this weekend? Sunday afternoon? Kate's suggestion is well taken and because not everyone checks in several times a day, how about 24 hours for answers to questions? The winner will be chosen by the hour posted.

Lately, I am having another problem with not being about to "refresh" the site. Sometimes, I have to completely close down my computer - so, it's perhaps just my dinosaur computer acting up, or if anyone else is having this problem, I would like to know.

Jack - Yes, I did see your first post about Dr. Cellini and that was a very nice gesture on your part. Thank you again - because I meant every word of what I said about Luke and Edna - both warm and friendly teens who kept those qualities into adulthood.

Geri Frysinger's little book really is a treasure. I am guessing she's around my age, but unfortunately, I never knew her. On good advice, I will not be citing from her book, but if you would enjoy another "contest" about life in the mid-40's and 50's, we can do that and of course, not all memories need come from Ms. Frysinger's book. With Ms. Frysinger's permission, I can post her address (which is in the back of the book) for those of you wishing to obtain a copy. Florence would like a contest. Anyone else?

I have to add this. Strange and weird things are still happening and it seems rather interesting to me that since I posted the fact (yesterday, I think) that I am not using Outlook Express any longer, but another carrier, Outlook Express is no longer receiving virus, but my new carrier is (fortunately, they can be deleted without having to open them and Norton is doing its job). So, this "virus" must be able to read what is posted here.

Hi All: Just wanted to let you know. I got the virus, too. Even though I haven't been on the computer since last Thursday because I was in a class and I usually don't get time on the weekends, I ended up with 43 emails from various people on Old Chester PA and maybe some people in your personal email group list. So I just deleted them all. So, If anyone got or gets email from me without my name in the subject line delete it. Virus's happen a lot by idiots who have nothing better to do with their time. It is a federal crime to create and send them, just so you know. But, few are ever really caught and a lot of them start over seas and make their way to the US through the World Wide Web.

Thank you Tina, for your response. I am certain you are a nice person, just as so many worthwhile people are who are using this site for the betterment of keeping Chester's history alive, and that's what irritates me so that our comradeship and good intentions are suffering. Something else I came across while unpacking my boxes is a saying: "If someone criticizes your good works, do good works anyway." So, we will go on, and on and on, God willing.

On another note, as everyone knows, when you move, there are boxes and boxes of memorabilia we always take with us, no matter where we go. (I had to laugh at my son one time, when he was moving and he closed up a box of personal items and said, "I'm tired of lugging this all over the country; let someone else lug it for awhile." Like who?????

Anyway, today, after my gigantic move, I got down to the second from last box and found memorabilia regarding highschool reunions and one of the memorabilia (I think from our 45th Reunion in 1995)is a real treasure, A little booklet written by Geri Frysinger Greenwalt Templin, entitled "A Little Chester History" - Copyright 1991 - Revised 1995. There is also an address for Ms. Templin for you to order, I am assuming, a copy of this little book - 9 pages long. If this little book doesn't take you back to life in Chester during my growing up years - 1932-1950 - nothing will.

From time to time, I will cite what she has written, or if you would like, we could have another contest regarding life in Chester during the 40's and 50's.

Let me know - I think it could be fun. I just have to take time out and read her little book once again. I promise I will try to make it as interesting as I can.

The virus that everyone is talking about is the klez worm. It worms its way into your address book and e-mails people in your address book and disguises the sender name. I, too, have been getting e-mails with names I recognize from this website. But I know that these worm e-mails were not actually sent from those people. The klez worm infects your exe files. Exe files make your computer applications execute. Once the klez virus infects your computer it gets immune to virus software and you can't get rid of it. Your computer starts running real slow and you can't start applications. Also, your processor makes very loud crunching noises the whole time that your computer is on. I had to completely wipe away my hard drive and lose everything and reload my windows 2000 system. That was the only way I could get rid of it. I am lucky enough that I can do this work on my own computer but I am sure that many people would have to pay someone to do this for them. The only thing you can do to prevent yourself from getting this worm is to update your virus software and not get infected in the first place.

Actually, if you do a search on John's website (on the home page) and put Cupatea712 in the search box, you'll see I have contributed a variety of info under categories such as tragedy (Helen Van Riper's accident), obits (Williams, Pierce, Dalton and Van Riper) and biographical sketches. So, I would never do anythign nasty like send anyone a virus. Just want to share information!

From now on, if I post, I will use John's suggestion of adding a phrase to my email address so it cannot be stolen.

Have a great day!

TINA: When I did receive that particular one with cupatea as sender, I immediately emailed you to try to ascertain if, indeed you did send it or if your email address was being used, as is mine. I never would have known my address was being used if someone hadn't emailed me asking why I sent that. I never received a response from you and perhaps my email to you was one you deleted because you didn't recognize the sender.

It's nice to know it was not you, but not so nice that you are being victimized.

Thank you Caroline. Researching family history and delving into the past is so much fun for me. I enjoy learning what everyday life was like for my ancestors. I did forget to mention that I recently made use of filters for my hotmail email address. I was receiving emails from people/names unknown to me and the subject matter was filthy and explicit. I delete these but have since made use of filters, sending any email with vulger content, as well as any subject with words like viagra, debt consolidation, diet and various explicit descriptions of human anatomy, directly to the trashcan. You get the idea... If I don't know your address and the subject line isn't obviously something I have inquired on - it gets deleted. Can't be too careful when there are harmful viruses out there. I'm glad I checked the board today!

Hello: Don't know if anyone has checked out the new picture on the WHAT'S NEW section. It is a good picture of the Sinclair Championship Baseball Team 1948. Could be someone will see their Dad, grandfather, etc. and can include their names on the page. John is very busy adding many useful links to those that are researching in the genealogy department. Remember it takes time to research, scan, type and upload to a website. Gotta squeeze some work hours in there too I would imagine.

Tina good luck on your search.

I have been absent from reading the board for quite some time but noticed that Pat McFadden mentioned my email address in connection with a virus or unwanted email. I have not mailed you, Pat, nor anyone else from this board. I believe the virus or whatever "snatched" email addresses possibly from this board or other places I may have posted. If I ever email anyone I ALWAYS use a subject! Also, I can assure you I am quite benign in regard to any material I would send to share with anyone. Most of my previous posts on this board or other web sites are queries in reference to genealogy. I stopped posting "memories" here as I believe I'm of a much younger generation and therefore have not been able to establish a rapport. Anyway, just wanted to clear my email address's good name!

concerning the chester transportation center, the inside of the building looks the same as it did in the 1940's as i remember as a child,it is a beautiful restoration, there has been some accomodation for the american with disabilities act on the upper level otherwise it is a 1940's time warp. also there is considerable activity on the firedamaged wheterhill building, looke like prep for demolition, the overhead bridge cranes are still there no worse the ware.i will keep you informed if any you are interested. there is considerable work going on ave of the states between 4th and fifth street ,the bank building at 4th and ave of the states is receiving extensive renovations prior to it becoming the new city hall,(this is the former operations center built by southeast bank in the 1970's).

Virus Problems: I have recieved 15 emails in the past couple of days, each with a virus attached. I keep Norton up to date and run behind a firewall so no damage was done. I subscribe to many groups and this one is the only one that I see any complaints about this problem. The ones that I have recieved are coming from. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

All of the info is probably phony, about all you can do is keep you virus software up to date. You may also want to check http://www.grc.com and scan your computer for open ports than can be accessed by hackers.

John:

I am happy you addressed the problem that some of us have had recently. It is a unconvince but as long as our computers are updated daily we can avoid major breakdowns. I think one problem with home users is they have no on site techs to address the subject when it happens. Those of you that understand computer talk and are computer wise do the home user a service when you explain how something like this email thing can happen. Thanks again for spelling it out.. From some of the emails I have received others also appreciated your addressing the subject. Caroline

KATE: Yes, it is absolutely universal. The law firms for which I work are always notifying everyone who works on a computer of a new virus occurring. Not only the lawfirms, but most businesses I know of do the same thing. It just seems odd to me that we who post here are being targeted as a "group".

Many thanks John for keeping a watchful eye on what is being posted. There is something I don't understand; however. When you say, "The virus might send itself . . .", does that mean that no human is behind it? That, once started (by a human, I would assume) it can then roll through the internet like a snake without a head? Assuming that is the case, it was started by a human being - right or wrong?

Caroline stated that someone tried to send it to "oldchesterpa" group. A human has to be behind that in order to give it a group name.

Can you explain further? Thank you.

Folks, let me share a couple of thoughts about the recent problem with viruses and "spam". I'm not exempt either, I usually am hit at least 6 times a day for the last couple of months since the "Klez" virus became prevalent on the web again.

* Don't jump to any conclusions about someone intentionally sending out a virus. Some of these recent viruses disguise themselves as to who the real sender is. For example, if I were infected, the virus might send itself to "Florence" but show that it's coming from "Paul", when in reality it's coming from my machine. It picks names at random either from our address books or from messages marked as "unread" in our email program.

* If you have anti-virus software installed, be sure to keep your virus definitions up-to-date. In the case of Norton Antivirus, run "Live Update" at least once a day to check and see if there are any new definitions. The software can not protect you if it's not aware of a new virus.

* If you would like to cut down on the number of "spam" emails yet let others here be able to email you when they'd like to get in touch, add an obvious phrase (like I did above) to your email address. Folks who really want to get in touch will remove that part while the mass emailers who "crawl" the web looking for email addresses will end up with a worthless one to send the "junk" to.

* Another possibility to cut down on unwanted email would be to use that line here for some other identifier. For example, your school and class "CHS '68" or where you currently reside "Reidsville, NC".

Hope this helps some... Happy Reminiscing!

John

PS: I'm just back from a week in Chester and have brought lots more "goodies" to share with you here on the site as well as a number of emails from folks with more info and pictures to share. Stay tuned and always check our "What's New" page.

Pat, same thing is going on with me & I recieved the same names you mentioned. Norton2002 has kept me from opening them & my husband seems to think it is someone that has our e-mail addresses from the web-site but he has also had bad e-mail befor I started going on the site, so do you think the conclusion can be that this is universal?

Pat,Paul,Caroline. This is happening to me also and my anti virus won't let them open, still it is a pain in the neck. I get at least 4 every morning. I am spending all my time scanning. My daughter says this wouldn't happen if I had a mac. What do you think.

PAUL - I too have received several returns from the Postmaster - none of which was sent by me. Each one I have forwarded to my carrier as I was instructed to do by my carrier. I have also stopped using Outlook Express and have been using another email carrier. My new carrier appears to delete them entirely, not even landing in my "trash" area.

However, I go to outlook express everyday just to see what's there and this morning there were two dangerous viruses. One from "kinmgnan" with the subject "Let's be friends"; another I received over a week ago from "cupatea" - if I recall correctly, the subject line was empty. In turn, I emailed "cupatea" asking why that was sent to me and I have never received a reply. Beware of both these senders. The others seem to use a nebulous type of name.

I would like to have some input from some of the people on this board who are much more computer-literate than most of us as to their thinking about this disaster. Like, George Malick - what are your thoughts on this George?

Paul:

That is exactly what happened to me. It was returned by the postmaster to my webaddress also. It did have a subject theme and attachment. I have saved it but did not open the attachement. I did not send the one I received either.

I don't know if it's happening to others, but I've been receiving virus laden e-mails. Fortunately NORTON is taking care of them. Today one was supposedly a return from the POSTMASTER who was returning an undeliversble e-mail. I never sent one to the address mentioned.

To reiterate what my friends here have already stated, it is a sad, sad state of affairs that people exist who take great enjoyment in destroying that which is meant to increase his/her enjoyment. I too am being victimized in every conceivable way they can concoct.

Emailing and this oldchesterpa site is very possibly the only means that a lot of homebound people have of communicating with others - their family who lives in another state or country - particularly being able to see their grandchildren. Many people are not able to get out, go to parties, travel, etc. and the person(s) deliberately making life even more painful for others by their evil deeds involving this site and the web mail will be repaid in a triple manner. Life is too short to think repayment is years away - repayment comes sooner than expected.

One message such as this one will not change what is going on, but as one wise man said, "Malice drinks half its own poison."
