Thats true Florance. In the past week someone borrowed part of my web address and created another and tried to send out a email to a group called "oldchesterpa" with an unknown attachment. I do not send group mail to anyone from the Chester site. I have afew people that I email privately and I do answer on a one to one base any mail regarding John's website and information on it. I will not change my email address.

We have been given a rare chance by John to step back into the past of Chester. I for one enjoy the read.

Will and Ryan live in Nashville and Doreen married Ken Webb they live in I think it's New Castle, Del. I've been there a couple of times and know exactly where they live, but don't know if the area is considered Newark or New Castle.

Lights of the Commodore Barry Matthew Ryan

I saw the lights of the Commodore Barry From the deck of the ghost of the flower street ferry And I felt the shock of an atom bomb When the tired old city of Chester Was draped and dying in my arms

For a while I was lost under the weight of remembering Of how the sun would warm the projects some mornings When the birds were falling like winter's frozen rain And I was all fingers numb holding a brown paper lunch Twelve years old and already ashamed

Now soon I was floating over Highland Avenue By my side was the Red Cross, the Pope and the President too Yeah I had returned like I swore I would To right some wrongs and sing my song And share the luck that every man should

But when the fever broke and I awoke from the dream I was passed out beside a jukebox siphoning gasoline When my brother yanked me hard from the corner bar And carried my drunk bones all the way home Draped and heavy in his arms

TOM... Go to the "Schools" section on the right. Click on Clayton. There is a picture of Clayton from 1914. When I started there in the 2nd. grade there was a new addition on the left of the old bldg. I think the addition was in 1944. There is a stone marker still there that says CLAYTON SCHOOL..1944. The original part was torn down. I don't know when. Another addition was added. When I went there the wrought iron fence in the picture was still there. About 20 yrs.ago I stopped in,asked if I could walk around some. I told them I used to go there, was visiting from out of town and thought it would be nice to visit. After asking the Lady at the desk, she went in the back. A man came out. I repeated everything again. He said"why the hell would anybody visit Chester". He let me wander! Only thing that I recognized was the Urinals in the Boys room.

This is the link to another Chester artist that made some records, Matthew Ryan aka Ryan Webb, although not that big yet you have the first look. On his Mayday album there is a song titled "Lights of the Commodore Barry" which is a song about growing up in Chester. He grew up in Buckman Village before moving out of town.

I thought the school at 7th and Harwick was always Pulaski, when I was growing up I went to Wm. Penn elementary(1-6th) then Pulaski(7&8th) then I went to Booker T. Washington(9th) from there we went to the New high school. Was Pulaski originally Clayton? Also I read that they are going to close Pulaski this year.

Donna, I heard about your brother Joey. Jack sent me a letter. I called and spoke with Marie. My prays are with him. It has been a while since I spoke with your mom. I tried calling her several times in the last year. But she was not home. My brothers' store (Italian Brothers Deli) is located at 5th Street and the Avenue of the States, in Downtown Chester. They have a full scale catering business as well, e.g., small party trays to major weddings. I graduate from law school in December 2002, with academic honors most likely. Afterward, I will study to take the state bar exam to obtain my law license. I intend to focus only on employment litigation, no criminal cases or personal injury, unless the injuries are serious. But, my biggest desire is to focus on eating cheese-steaks and hoagies. Be good. Paul

Never realized so many have thought & felt the same way I had about growing up in Chester! Seems like I always have some kind of story to be telling my grandkids. You know the one about waking up early to feed the chickens & milking the cows before walking 10 miles to & from school in the snow.ha-ha.They enjoy those stories living here in Ca. Sure would like to hear from some of you.I've been reading & following along with you for about six months now & can't believe that more people haven't signed on to say,"hello",kiss my a--,or something.I know it's taking me six months to do so,so okay then I've done it so where's everybody at? I graduated from St.Roberts in '77 and ND in '81 so you probably don't remember me, but when you mentioned Rural Ave-I had to contact you. I had an older brother named Rick Lyons(maybe you remember him).I grew up around there & hung out every night on Rural Ave-do you remember the Tatarelli's & the McDonald's-they grew up on 15th st. How about Nut(with the Red Roadrunner).I hung out with all of those people. The Brown's on Rural Ave, Billy Gillespie, the Roach girls. Well, I just had to write. I really don't remember you (or your maiden name anyway) but hope all is well. Nothing like the good old days in Chester!.

Joe Logan--From about 1946-50 we were playing Wickie, football, and Basketball on Upland St between 4th & 5th(side of Headley's Warehouse). My wife lived at 23rd & Upland so I know your neighborhood. Down our way at night we also played crawing football on the small iawn of the Ukrainian Church at 4th & Madison and played on the swings and merry- go- round at the Day Nursery. [Picture] Both of those activities would end when they called the cops( in spite of our self enforced penalty for load noises during play). In the fall, we played Release @ 5th & Madison. Last names of some of the players( Hashorva, Smedley, Kushto, Landis, Knott, Gaudello, Pheil, Moore, and McGinniss. In the alley between 3rd & 4th and Upland &Morton, we played kick the can. Our actual base ball games were played in Headley's lot with its oyster shell turf and the wide St into the Sun Ship Yard at 3rd & Morton. Nice to be reminded of those times. We never even knew it was too hot to play outside in the Summer.

I should have been a little more explicit about the location of our games, since playing on most parts of Upland Street would have been a life threatening event.

Mary Davis Vercoe: I do remember the Davis name from Hancock St, but can't tie anything together. Maybe if I think about it for a while something will jog my memory. When I was born in 1927 we lived at 1418 Hancock, a short while later we moved to 1133 in the court, after a few years my family bought the home 2 house's away at 1129 Hancock. As you know times were not good in those days and a fellow by the name of George Warren owned some of those houses and had to get rid of them due to financial difficulties. My parents bought the house for $2500.00, Every month I had to take $22.00 in cash to the Iron Workers Building Loan Assn in the Crozer building at 5th and Market. I was married in 1952 and moved away from the family there. I am still married to the same gal, just celebrated our 50th. I remember Augie Achenbach(?}, Ginny and Bob Hill and Ruth and George Workman (Workman's Music Service), and the Baron's lived beside us at different times at 1127 Hancock. Also remember the Fellenbaum's, Cantwell's, Boughner's Zeleznick's, Copper's, Logan's, 2 Ryan families, Mahoney's, Lowry's, Degnan's. Boy, they keep coming back, first thing you know I will remember the Davis family !!!!!. I feel that I know Junior. Thanks for the note. Ohhh..by the way, I was back in Chester about a month ago and found that our old house had burned down, it was in one of the corners of the court and it sure looked odd with an empty place there

My brother said that you moved into the house we lived in after we moved out of the court... I was too little to remember. We moved to Garden City I think about '39. After graduating from Nether Providence I worked in Chester for 8 years and really have enjoyed reading about all the comments about stores, etc in good old Chester. Sure brought back a lot of memories!!! My Dad worked at the Wetherill Plant and then Sun Ship, retiring back in early 60s. Both my brother and husband worked at Scott Paper.

Joe Logan: When I was a kid in the court on Hancock St in Sun Village (about 1936) we used a hunk of hose about 3" long and called the game "hose ball". In the game we called "wickie" we used a piece of the broomstick about 3" long. We also played "quoits", at a family get together a few weeks ago we were playing horse shoes and I mentioned quoits to the youger folks and they did not even know what I was talking about. It was amazing what we could do without money. When most of us old coots talk about the good old days we remember when large candy bars were three for a dime, But this old coot remembers that he did not have a dime to buy them !!!! Believe me....these are the good old days !!!!

Paul Lelli, Do you have a relative nemed Floss Lelii? On January 6th,1963, I went through labor and delivery at Crozer Hospital with a Floss Lelii and we both had identical twin boys all four babies delivered by Dr. Stanley within a one hour period. What a guy. He was so proud of himself, you would have thought they were his kids. Betty Marth.

Had my laugh of the week today..Thought I'd share it even though it has nothing to do with Chester[although someone from there could do the same thing]. A tenant came to the office and said he had a problem. A dead battery. Could I help him? Sure,I said,"do you have jumper cables? "Sure do" Drive my car over to his, open both hoods and told him to get me the cables. He went to his trunk, fumbles around for awhile and came walking back. In his hand he had a BUNGEE CORD! [and only one] It was all I could to to keep from rolling on the floor laughing! P.S. He's a mechanical engineer!

I forgot to say that I think family is very important. We always ate meals together. I worked nights and my husband worked days, we worked out that one of us would always be here. But still everyone should know their own responsibility, no excuses. We were a family unit and still are, we did everything together and still do many things, and we always have family dinners togetherThey are always there for us.

I don't know much about drugs, but I can see that they are a bad thing. I can see today that most kids between 18-25 seem to think that laws and rules do not refer to them, they pretty much do what they want to. I never had that problem with my children growing up. They knew the things they had to do and did them I count myself very lucky. We did a lot of fishing and sports, as much as we could. I wish the government could and would do more to keep them out of the country. Now my grandson is a different srory, got mixed up in them with a very dangerous group of people, and I would count him very lucky today. I think that everyone should know right from wrong and not blame it on something that went wrong in their childhood. No one should be afraid to ever be honest and truthful. I am no expert

Well. Geo, depending on what age group you are referring to some parents are to blame but only partly. I think some blame goes to the gov. they looked the other way when drugs were brought into the inner cities, that discussion could go on forever. but also parents from the 60's & 70's wanted thier kids to have more than they did and then you have to bring in modern technology geez, ya can't stop that. and then about the same time women went to work so who babysat the kids, TV & the games that went with it. the games the kids played in the 50's & 60's were great fun & came about b/c we didn't have all the means there are today.

You're right but don't blame the kids, it was Mom and Dad that bought them that crap in the first place..and the kids didn't grow the dope or import it, adults did and then hired kids to sell it on the corner...sorry world we live in but I remember my parents saying the same thing 50 years ago....Geo

We played wickie also with 4 players .So one team wouldn't have to "sit out" The fielder could Catch the hose for an out and also stop it from going farther. Didn't really need a catcher when playing hesd to head, usually 2 or 3 extra wickies or if the batter did'nt swing would return the wickie to the pitcher

I remember kick the can. I would never give up the days and nights of living in chester. Not one of our neighbors ever took our ball's or can's away from us. Anyone ever hear of the street game called Wickie? We used to play it on Upland Street using a short piece of rubber hose (5-6") and a broom handle. It was a baseball-like game requiring only two players on a side. The pitcher would throw the piece of hose end over end and the batter would attempt to hit it straight and far. The curbs on each side of the street would be the foul lines and cars parked along the street would be used as distance markers to determine a single, double, HR, etc. Any combination of three misses or fouls retired the side. So did catching the hose in the air which was not a prudent thing to do because the batter could really smack the Wickie. It would sting likes blazes if caught.

It was a great game that required only a pitcher, a catcher, a batter and a nice summer evening after the heat abated somewhat and before the sun went down.

That's what everybody played and tackle football in someone's yard especially after it rained. The more mud the more fun. Also favorites of mine were jacks, chinese jumprope,double-dutch rope and lots of hopscotch and riding bikes! oh and loved skating thru the neighborhood and people's houses!

Born and raised in Chester. From the age of 3yrs at 214 West 15th Street. St. Robert's grad in 1958, Notre Dame, 1962. Grew up between Shaw Terrace and Crosby Street. Neighbors on 15th during the 50's were: Hammer; Cline; Knoll; Mrs. Eshermen & Justin; Dolan, Moore, Us, Orr; Decker; Holland; Stoddart; Carpenter; Embert; Sammy something. Cline's had a store across the street on 15th. Ben's store was down on 14th & Crosby, went down the path where the natural spring was, past the old mill and the Knight's back yard with a million vicious dogs to get there. Crozer hospital down the hill, Wax mills up the Hill. BIG fire when wax mills burned in 1967. Blind Center then built. Rock candy factory across the street by path. High Field; Hits or Cracks with Camel cigarette packs; "Hit Parade" cigarettes we used to smoke in the High Field, we would buy for 25cents out of the machine at the store at the bottom of 15th across from the hospital, now a bar; Rural Ave.construction site; the quick sand by Rural Cemetry we used to play "chicken" over by swinging from the rope in the tree; AHH yes, those were the days....

I remember one time specifically and will for the rest of my life. We were playing down at the Chester West L.L. field. He was pitching and I was catching. I didn't have a catcher's mask on. He was a very fast pitcher as you know. The guy who was batting was Danny Wojs. He fouled a ball back it came off the top of my catchers mitt and hit me dead in the nose. I didn't remember much after that. But I definitely knew after that day the term "SEEING STARS" was true because that's the last thing I saw until they told me what happened later on. I know my nose was broken because I blew blood out of it for 3 days. Never went to the hospital, though. You know we were tough guys back then. LOL I forget if it was Jolly or someone else who straighten it. That hurt like hell, too. I never caught without a mask again, though.

The story reminds me of the town by ST.George's bridge. Every weekend when my sister and I went with my grandparents to Woodland Beach, we stopped at the little store, which also served as a drug store, they had fountain sodas and I remember they had cheese sandwiches in a jar, further down we wood stop at a homemade ice cream place for some banana ice cream, sat in the booth's and ate it.and further down, stop in a town called Smyrna, for the fresh chicken's fo r Sunday dinner at the beach. Wonderful times for me and family.

With summer coming there will be a good number of former--and present-- Chesterites that will come to the Eastern shore to vacation. Some of us are retired and living here. When you should pass by--or through--Kent Count, Md, don't miss stopping by one of the nicest churches on the Bay. Many of us are from Delaware County. The parish secretary went to Rez and was in the Brownies and later the Scouts at Rez. She would be glad to show off the church. If you come by on the last Saturday in July, stop at the Parish Social Hall and enjoy our Annual Bull Roast.

And browse through our website www.stdennischurch.org

Hi Everyone, I remember growing up in Chester. I grew up on 18th st in the eastend (right behind St.Robert's school yard) They were great memories. I also remember taking the bus into town every Friday after school (since we only had one car & my Dad had it to go to work). We went to Weinberg's, Sears,Woolworth's,the newstand & Robert Halls, we always got our good clothes from there. I also remember John's doggie shop-that was the best. I still go to the one on the Conchester-remember Pete-he is still there. Well, the great memories of Chester. Not the same but never forgotten! I am very PROUD for growing up there!

Hi Paul: They were great! One of the few carbonated drinks that truly quenched your thirst on a hot day. Don't know how they were made at other places, but at Lil's Cut-Rate at 3rd & Wilson, they would put a squirt or two of the lemon flavor, then fill it with soda and finally take an eye-dropper and put a few drops of the phosphate. Just thinking about the word "phosphate" today sounds like something the EPA would want to know about, but they were good.....George

To GEORGE - What a wonderful experience that was and you just confirmed my prior suggestion that oldchesterpa (downtown) could be converted to just that - yesterday, when life was simple, silly and loveable.

That was a great story and I loved it. Imagine how many people could have the same experience you had, if only Chester downtown could be renovated to do that. The original glasses being used for sodas, etc. Delaware County would/could realize so much income from tourists wanting to "go back in time" just as you did (and possibly a reduction in taxes).

Please document it all - just in case my dream materializes, even down to the size of the glasses. What fun! Then, we can be so proud to say, "I'm from Chester, Pa and proud of it." What Chester Makes, Makes Chester" - and we're not done yet.!!

Answer me this. Why is the movie "The Time Machine" so popular?

I had to laugh at a previous post where someone said, ask the merchants to unload the boxes and reopen the store. That's one of the cutest remarks I've seen posted here - just a delight.

Let's think of more ways to hold on to our history and restore what was once our own "Happy Days".

No, We DON'T have a Colorado Web site, but we DO have a former Chester resident that lives in Colorado and tried to relate finding an old fashioned drug store much like one he used to go to in Chester. Just something that brought up a fond REMEMBRANCE of Chester,PA. I'm sorry if MY story bored you...George

George pm: Glad that someone also remembers the lemon phospate. I had posted somewhere in the past remembering them from Trippledi's. They had a special in the 50's to introduce the drink. They gave a glass when you got the large soda. The glasses were frosted with enamaled victorian pictures. Still a beautiful glass. I had seen a piece of wall artwork in Ocean City NJ where the fountain featured the lemon phospate. I would love to have one. Or a Vanilla fountain coke. Even have the old fashion coke classes from Trip's buried somewhere in a box. Enjoyed the read, it did bounce back to a Chester memory.. Thanks for sharing.

Good story George, it brought back a memory of a couple of years ago when I was in Las Vegas. We decided to take a trip to the Hoover Dam. Well we went past this diner and the bus driver said that it was the diner from Happy Days and we stopped in. It brought back memories of POP's Place, with the booths and soda fountains and the big green milkshake machines.

Several days ago I had to make a short business trip to southern Colorado. As I neared my destination, it had become quite warm, in the high 90's and I was really in need of a cold drink. I was approaching a small town called Walsenberg, so I decided to look for a service station and buy a soda. Now I have driven past Walsenberg scores of times in the past 30 years but never stopped. I didn't see any stations on the main street but I did notice a large store on the corner called "Walsenberg Drug" I decided to take a chance and see if they had a Pepsi machine. As soon as I entered, I swear I entered a "time warp" It was rather poorly lit from the few hanging light fixtures which had huge fans rotating ever so slowly. There were small glass showcases around the store with a large area in the rear where the pharmacist, an elderly gentleman, was filling prescriptions. I asked one of the clerks if they had a soda machine and she replied "no but we have a soda fountain, if that will do" She directed me to the far side of the store where there was a counter with about ten chrome stools bolted to the floor with the round seats covered in dark red vinyl. Behind the counter was a long soda fountain with all the push valves for the different flavors with several large flip top doors for the containers of ice cream that they scooped out with the dipper for cones and sundaes. I took a seat at the counter and the young man politely asked what I would like. Still in astonishment, I meekly asked if they served lemon phosphate. He said "sure, what size?". As he pumped the flavor then the soda then the dropper of phospate, I couldn't help thinking back about 50 or so years and sitting at Bomberger's with my aunt, drinking a lemon phospate and listening to "Button's and Bows's" on the juke box. Amazingly, the soda was served in a shiny chrome hour glass shaped base with a cone shaped paper cup snapped into it. Trust me, it was just as delicious and refreshing as the ones I remember. Before I left, I couldn't resist ordering a double dip strawberry ice cream cone. I browsed the store for a few minutes then left, as I walked up "Main" street to my car, I noticed the barber sitting outside dressed in his white smock and the barber shop sign of red white and blue rotating in all it's glory. I really didn't want to leave but I had to get on with my trip. So, to Harry Bomberger, the store may be gone but I found it 2,000 miles away. Oh yeah, they didn't have "Buttons and Bows" on the jukebox...George

Hi everyone, this is a neat site when you read the things listed boy the menories sure flash back. I have been away for over 30 years and it seems like yesterday that I would walk through the park up 9th st. th HONEY SUCKLE FARM for the biggest and best ice cream come in the world. You out there has that receipe or where they bought the ice cream. what a treat. The old Lamokin Village looks wonderful, hope it remains. Try to improve Avenue of the States or ask the shop owners to take the merchandise out the boxes. Gone are the days of Spear Bros., Weinbers and Rogers. My mom bought me a new outfit every Friday after school. That was our time together. Keep going Chester!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone.......been reading the posts and all this talk of Weinberg's brings to mind a story involving Weinbergs and Elizabeth Rivan ( she was for years the housekeeper at Rez Rectory) Anyway,. she had the most awful foot problem, had terrible corns. I worked at the rectory from 7th grade thru my senior year and it became one of my jobs to get on the bus and go downtown to pick up Elizabeth's shoes at Weinbergs. Unfortunately every pair of shoes would eventually get the toes cut out!! She would wear them for a day or two; then next thing you knew she'd be sitting in her rocking chair in the kitchen cutting the dang toes out of the shoes. As you can imagine shoes don't last very long when you damage them like that so needless to say i had to make frequent trips to Weinberg's. I just wish I could remember the name of the lady at Weinberg's who would laugh and make me feel a whole lot less embarrassed about picking up these granny shoes so often!! She was always so sweet and knew the whole story very well. Anyone from Rez have any more memories of Elizabeth? She was there from Fr Ganster's time ( the beginning of the parish ) and even came out of retirement when Fr. McKenzie returned to Rez. Special Lady. Never let a drunk or homeless guy in the rectory (they were there often) but she always made sure they got something to eat. Learned a lot from her..........God rest her soul

Funny story; One time I was at work at the West End Boat Club and I was suppose to get a ride home by one of the guys I worked with Danny Lamb who lived in Highland Gardens. Well we were suppose to get a ride home by his dad who I didn't know. Danny tells me that his dad was waiting outside and he'd be right out. I was done so I go out and jump in this car that's idling at the end of the building by the side door. The guy was like scared he says to me "who are you" "what do you want" I say I'm Danny's friend, he said you would drop me off. Then I could tell the old guy was pretty scared. He's like who's Danny? I say Danny Lamb, he says I don't know any Danny Lamb. Well at this time I realize I'm in the wrong car. So I get out feeling embarrassed and as stupid as you know what. I look around and there's Danny and his dad sitting in a parking spot with the car running waiting for me. He where were you in the bathroom. I told him what happened and we laughed our butts off all the way home. I guess you had to be there to see both the old guy's face and my face when I realized I was in the wrong car. I later figured out he was probably waiting for his wife to come out of the club.

Betty RM: See what delicious calorie filled memories you have reminded us of. Yummy Fudge. That real butter coat really gave it a true old fashion flavor. Even boardwalk fudge (suppose to be old fashion) can't match the flavor of Mrs. Phillips recipe. Another recipe we made in her class was the Cream of Potatoe Soup.

Remember the single stitch crochet hats we made in her class, the aprons and later the slummber PJs. Oh and the peddle pushers..Polished cotton ones looked great.

I hope Mrs. Phillips reads the NEWSSTAND occasionally. We all have such great memories from her class..and Mr. Phillips class too. Remember the sewing boxes we made in shop while the guys went up to cooking class.

So I yelled, "Joan, hold on. The fudge lost it's sheen and threw the phone down and when I picked it back up and said "OK< it's done." You said , ever so nicely,"YOU BIT>>>>>>. It still makes me laugh today. Good memories. I would love to talk to you. We are in Mass. right now until June 12th. Our son, Jack lives here. I will be back in my home about June,17th. We will be making a stop at Monica's on the way home to see her second child, Mallory graduate high school. Remember how we used to call her Monkey JO?? I got her a sweatshirt for her one time after she was married and had MonkeyJo written on it. She is so precious to me. She has chronic pain from an infection that ate all but 1/4 inch of her lower jaw. She has had so many facial surgeries. She is a pistol, tho. She is a great Mother. I also think she is a great wife. I don't see too much about the ladies auxillary's. I can remember being in a Hallowee'n parade. of course dressed funny and of course right behind the Police and their horses. What fun that was. A story about our monkey, one day she took every little piece of wire that held the cage together off of it. When she flattened it she dumped all of my soappowder and then proceeded to dump a bottle of water on it, and make a mess.
