The St. Michael's class of 1952 had an absolutely wonderful 50th reunion at the Towne House this past Saturday night. 19 classmates were present and all had a marvelous time. It was so great to see all our old classmates again and to see how none of us have changed at all! (:>)

its really nice that things were passed down back then to the next set of kids growing up in the village. i have the exact same memories of the leaf houses , the sprinklers , and the hockey boxes. its a shame our kids dont really have things like that to look back on.like jack said the video games and computers are our kids choice of play these days. its really sad ! aunt sharon , you used to tell me some really funny stories about you and your friends. do you remember telling me about sitting on blue heavens steps, and how she would throw water on you from her window. lol

Craig"Fled"Rainey:

Could you ask you Dad if he has his year books from 1955 thru to when he graduated in 1957...if so would he loan them to us to key into the site...If your coming to the reunion maybe you can bring them and John will make sure we get them to key in and I will guarantee that they are returned as received..or if you wish to add the information , please do. Would like up to 1960 at this time...

Any reunion committe head, please contact me regarding the deceased members of your class. We would like to get a list to add to the web pages...If you have a list typed and are coming to the reunion please bring them or email/send them to John.

Appreciate any assistance you can give in completing the CHS "ANNUAL" information.

SEE YOU SATURDAY....OCTOBER 5, RAIN OR SHINE...

Hey Tammy!I remember a lot of the things you&Sharon are talking about, those were the days and i will have my memories of growing up in the village. Also, we played kick the can, caughty caught no brakes and kickball in the bare playground.Remember we used to rake all the leaves in the playground and then make houses.Sharon, i know what you probably do not want to remember and that was Trick and my brothers with the cross in the playground.I do not want to say much more then that because now that we are all grown it really was not a good thing. Also,Sharon i remember the time you put the cigarette out in Bobby Diehl's face.I talk to Bill last night and he told me that Trick is buried next to our sister. That's really nice.I will look for more messages tomorrow, i have to leave for work soon.

How about the movies they had on Saturday afternoons at the McCaf community building or the dances for a quarter. I remember Tim's band playing on the side of the building by the smoke stack. My cousin George Berrero was also a drummer. I remember there was a battle of the bands at Chester Park. Anyone remember a band called The Glass Onion?

FAL: Thats true, perhaps some of the local people can print off a copy of the notice and ask the managers at WAWA/Dunkin Donuts in their area if they could place one in the front window. Then assure them that you will remove it after the event. Usually they will let this happen..

There are a lot of Chesterites who don't own a computer and therefore may not know about the Get-Together on Oct 5th.

If you know someone like that give them a telephone call and invite them to come next Saturday.

Let them know them all the info about the meeting.

I am an architectural conservator working on the current restoration of the Christopher Columbus monument in Chester. We have discovered some evidence suggesting it was gilded, and are trying to locate anyone who might rememeber what the sculpture looked like in 1956 when it was unveiled. Specifically, was it gold? Or was it brown?

Any and all recollections of the early days of the monument are welcome! Needless to say, our completion deadline is Columbus Day, 2002!!

I remember playing football with you,at Pulaski, and at the little leauge field. I remember we all used to shine shoes, and go down to Penn Fruit and help people with their groceries. I also remember going on a trip to French Creek when we were Mc Caffery Village Junior's. I remember you had a sister and she was one of the chapperones. What ever happened to Chuckie Green. Claude Matthews,Paul Scarpato,Fox,& Gary Sheerer.I haven't been back since I was a kid.I tell people of my childhood, and they look at me like i'm crazy, but looking back it some of the best time's in my life. I'm glad I found this page.

Florence, hi I just read your post about dancing schools. The only one I know of nowadays is in Upland. I believe it is Joan's Dance Studio. My 7 yr. old niece HayleyMarie has been going there since she was 5 I believe. I love to watch tap too. I'm always trying to encourage her to take tap but she doesn't want to yet. She took gymnastics and now she is in jazz. If you ever want to see a great show, they put on a dance recital every year at Sun Valley High School in Aston. I've been there for 3 years and it really is an awesome show.

I do remember your name, Haynes, but can't place your face. What street did you live on in Sun Village? I was on Curry Street, 1100 block. Of course, I can't locate 63 year book at this moment. Do you remember Dawn Murray and her younger sister, Gail? Dawn passed away about 5/7 years ago from breast cancer. Gail manages the 7-11 at Dutton Mill and Concord Rd in Aston. This web site is really great. I haven't thought about Chester and old friends for a long time. Now living in Stanton, De and have been married to same guy for amost 37 years. I'm leaving tomorrow for vacation, but will check in when I return. Really nice to hear from you.

Thanks Sis glad you all had a good time at my wedding. I hope everyone did.

Good Morning BettyLou, I just read to mom again your posting and she was happy with what you said to me, she says 'hello' and that yep that's how she remembers you as BettyLou Bradely. And she talked again about how nice it was to run into you at that softball game. I asked her about those PMC guys and she laughed. I said c'mon mom Betty wants me to ask you about them, and she laughed again and went hmmmm... she said those guys 'were all that' lots of good memories!

To Donna Lewis

I often think about your Mom and I'm glad to hear she is doing well. I remembered, after I sent the e-mail, that she did live on McDowell and not Elisnore. She is correct.... we did talk at a softball game at the field on Curry Street....where I still own a house. Ask your Mom about the guys from PMC. By the way, my name before I got married was Bette Lou Bradley. Ask Arlene if she remembers Franny from the 800 Block of Elisnore. I can't remember her last name.

Give your Mom my best wishes. It was nice talking to you.

Why do I remember the St James Sock Hops as being on Friday night? Think it was probably the only reason that after the dances we used to go to the Highland Cafe for pizza. Pizza right of the oven, so hot it burned the top of your mouth and cokes in fountain glasses with lots of ice. Just my recollection of dances up until '60. They may have changed the day later on, or maybe I'm just having a senior moment.

By the way for all of you hoagie aficiandos I'd just like to say the best one I've had lately was from La Spada's in Aston.

Lee: I remember down around Dewey there were quite afew Greek families, I think this is what those of us from the South Chester called the Greek secition of Chester. I remember Costa Miller very well, and Ken (isn't or wasn't he a J of P in Parkside) and there was a Bill that I remember. Costa was during my time in Chester a good friend of Horace Walker. Costa would have been around 56 in CHS and Ken was in CHS 54. Bill would have been in 58 CHS. One of their parents owned a bar either on 2nd or 3rd street. All sharp dressers. I seem to remember a bakery or someone from around the Greek church making these honey covered pasteries that would melt in your mouth. Now as a adult (?) I know them to be Baklava..The bakery or person made them better than I've had since.

Someone (no signature) asked on this board about the Greek neighborhoods of Chester. I don't recall a "neighborhood" but as a young boy in the '30's I lived next door to a Greek family that operated the Lincoln Restaurant on the corner of Third and Flower. Name was Miller...obviously Anglicized since Mr. Miller was an immigrant. We lived at 213 Reaney St, across from the Ruth Bennett Home for Chidren. Mr. Miller had a teen age daughter named Kiope who had a boy friend named George Macracostas. George became a pro wrestler and anyone here who remembers going to St. Hedwig's to see the wrestling matches will remember George. He was a regular there. I think Kiope and George married later. Lost track of that family but some of them had a big restaraunt at the intersection of Baltimore Pike and Route 100 back in the '50's.

I've got a gigantic problem that maybe some of you young sprouts from the mid-twentieth century might help me with. A friend of mine claims that the St. James dances were held on Saturday nights in 1946 thru 1950 (possibly much longer). My claim is that they were held on Sunday nights. My yearbook would tend to back me up but my friend says that it was a typo. Also, this brought up the question of what nights the Chester H.S., St. Michael's, Holy Cross and Ridley Township dances were held? Can anyone help?

Does anyone out there remember Miss Christine's variety store down on 3rd and Kerlin, which sat directly between Night Owls and Elmans by exactly one block. Miss Christine was really something. And how about her husband who was always around, with an unlit cigar in his mouth alot of the times, but never said very much unless it was a problem. They both could get sarcastic with the best of them, but were nice just the same. I remember the 1 cent cookies, especially those washboards. The penny candy was also a favorite. I loved the squirrel nuts, and the Mary Janes especially. Also just a few feet away was Burley's with the well known Mr. Burley who lived in the house right by the alley that led to the famous Mary Street. I'll never forget these things, nor will I ever forget the great flavor of the first bean pies from back in the late 60's early 70's. The ingredients must be slightly different now. I'm surprised that I never read anything about Council pies, that was located on West 2nd Street near Kerlin. Mr. and Mrs. Council were there for years, and took pride in their business that they maintained for so long without even having many advertisements. These past businesses were very popular in Chester's history. I can't finish without mentioning my main man, and his very popular Dukes Variety Store, which was located on 7th and Lloyd. The owner, William "Duke" Derrickson was very well appreciated in The area for not only employing the local youth; (myself for one) but also for the hip atmosphere, good burgers, Turkey hoagies, french fries, Cheesteaks etcs. Duke had many other items on the menu, but I'm not about to mention all of them. Mr. Derrickson Is no longer with us, but his brother still operates the Charles Horsey Post # 300 directly across the street from Dukes, and Carter's Bar (which is now Kelly's) See you all October 5th!

I think she lived on Morton Ave. Her name is Arlene and my grandmom 's name is Ruth, and she worked all over the place.

Let's try this again. To Al Crowther: I used to live in Highland Gardens on Price St.(2705) and would wait for the Tally Ho truck. My Stepfather, Ben Chandler, would give my brothers and me $.25 a week for the nightly ice cream. It cost $.05 a cone and so of course that left us for two nights a week with no ice cream. It was so hard to choose the two nights that we had to do without. How cruel! Haha. Memories.........

Class of 63

Born and raised in Sun Village section. Still own a house there. Boy, has Chester Changed. Remember when all the stores in 1100 block of Morton were occupied with Squire's Hoagie Shop, Foulkes jeweler; 5&10, cleaners, pharmacy and a few bars: Grosses' Sun Village Cafe. Not anymore!

My first real job when I was in 10th grade at NotreDame was at KYJ'S on 3rd Street. My friend Cheryl and Jackie worked there for awhile, well I only lasted there for 2 or 3 weeks. That place smelled so so good. And it was very very busy in the morning.

Kyj's bakery is still on Third Street, thats where all the baking is done, they also had some in Springfield, Brookhaven. Remember the box it had a key on it? hint hint thats how you pronounce Kyj's even though alot of people just called it K Y J. I worked there for a few years, I filled donuts and sold them.

Yup. a strawberry shortcake from Kyj's would be nice also. Kyj's made nothing bad.

I was in Brookhaven, and that Dunkin Donuts circa 70 was good.

My dad would work at Scott's. Shift work. Those eclairs there were welcomed.

Man, am I getting hungry.

Was nice also to see the page of WEEZ. I didn't know WEEZ wasn't that successful. It was THE place to listen for school closings. Across from the Food Fair market.

I need more coffee. Where's the pastries?

Betty we loved Penny Hill Donuts too. Remember going to the Movie theater that Marie Scopes (Sp.) family owned in the shopping center just off what's now the 495 freeway and then up the hill to get donuts to take home. I forgot about the stick cream filled..Aside from Jelly donuts that's all we ever bought. I never think to see if they sell them these days. Ches-pen made the best Glazed donuts. Leskeviches on 2nd and Highland made the best Jelly and home made bread and rolls. The closest thing today for the Jelly donuts from Benny the Bakers is the Polish Paczki made during the Easter Holy Days. We make them filled with a real Prune or Lakvar but many bakeries make them with the Raspberry Jelly fill. When you can buy the Jelly filled Paczki (punch-key) they taste very much like the ones from years ago. Now if we could find a bakery that makes the old type Eclair. With the fudge like chocolate on top and the old fashion pudding filling inside. As for Sherwoods I loved the Oyster Stew with the OTC crackers. The crabcakes there were the best ever. When they moved to Chichester years ago we went several times, but eventually they closed. The crabcakes at this extension of the original Sherwood were good and suppose to have been the same recipe. But not the same.

Hope you enjoyed the ride. You two should have been down the shore last weekend. Hundreds of bikers were there for the Roar at the Shore..Keep well.

Caroline, Oh Boy, Sherwoods Seafood House....Friday nights......Fried Flounder, French Fries and Cole Slaw. It was to die for. Yum! We can't get Fried Flounder here. We have lots and lots of Salmon and Sole. It is good but nothing like Fried Flounder. When I visit my Mother in Newark, De. we go to Charlie's on Rt. 40 to have our flounder. Love it! Now, if I could only find the cream filled stick donuts that Penny Hill used to make, I would have it made. Take care and have a great weekend. I think Marty and I are going on a Motorcycle ride..just an hour or so. My legs won't take much more than that. Betty

Posting on Aug. 27, 2002 regarding The Four Aces.

The story I was told, by a reliable source, was when Al Alberts quit the group, he was replaced by another singer. The 3 remaining original singers and Al Alberts' replacement were still known as the Four Aces.

Each time the remaining original singers left, they were replaced. The group was still known as the Four Aces. These changes were made over a period of time so the name stayed the same.

Was told that if the original four were to group up again, they would be known as "The Original Four Aces".

Just relating what was told to me by someone who knows one of the present singers in the group.

Yes it does seem that the board is quiet. But it is summer and vacation for many. Many of the people that have memories to share have shared them and are probably waiting for others to add the thousands of thoughts that are still out there hidden away in others memory banks. Their words may rekindle a moment in time for us ..so it would be nice to hear from you.

As for friendships and people reacquainting from this message board, that has happened time and time again. And if you wonder who visits these pages, I can only tell you that I have received emails from Norway (Shortwave-hello) Poland, Germany, France, Italy and more. Valid emails with addresses to write to and to verify, photos of their families. I have heard from former Priests who have seen the photos of the churches they have served, people that have long gone but because of all that is here have gained a new feeling of pride in the Old Chester that once was. These pages have given each of us a moment to remember the area that we all called home, it has also given many a photo history of events to share with their families and the family trees many are working on. Private photo collections being shared has made a History book of Chester. Johns indexing them has made it easy to access.

A special person that I heard from is a former teacher. Mr. Jesse Phillips..Both mr. Phillips and Mrs. phillips are aware of the many memories we have of them.

John Bullock as a teacher, must get a special feeling of pride in his creation when he sees that these two educators that gave so much of themselves to their students, are around to see that they are remembered warmly.

Now I have written far more than intended so will open the board to someone with a memory about the American Store on 3rd and Highland. Or Sherwoods seafood house...How about the YWCA and YMCA in Town.

I also wanted to say I am so sorry to see that so many people who are writing in these days are not signing their name. I think that is too bad. I thought keeping in touch with people who might know each other in some way was the point of this site. I am sorry to see this have to happen. I am sure it is because so many people were being ridiculed for what their comments. It is sad it has come to this point where we feel we must remain anonymous. once and for all;the 9/13/1971 storm was according to the DELAWARE COUNTY TIMES the after math of tropical storms HEIDI AND FERN, AGNES WAS IN 1972 NOT 1971.i think that should clarify any misconception on my part.the storms did dump 5 inches of rain in that 24 hour period.

to Florence; I believed it was a hurricane,I was driving around in it ,and I know it rained 5 inches in a very few hours,31 years is a long time ago,but the rains were torrential, does it really matter if was Agnes or not?i could care less, the point is it happened in 9/1971 did millions of dollars in damage, put hundreds of people out of there home, disrupted businesses and displaced people forever from where lived and altered the landscape in Delaware County and Chester forever.Middletown Road had a layer of water on it about a quarter of an inch deep, because the water could not drain off it as fast as the rain was coming down.MOST IMPORTANTLY CHESTER CITY LOST A NICE HOUSING DEVOLOPMENT AND ALL THE PEOPLE THAT LIVED THERE!!!

Jack Mills, Thanks for your memories. I only remember a little bit about the flood. I remember the wall coming down & it was real scary, I thought I was going to drown & die. But the big thing I remember was opening the door of the basement & seeing all of my toys floating up to the top of the steps. I was so scared I ran out front where the street was flooded also. So there was nowhere to go. Thank God for my parents-they took care of us.

Thanks again for the memory

SOMEONE POSTED THIS OLD MEMORIES OF CHESTER AND I THOUGHT IT WAS A FEEL GOOD MEMORY FOR THIS SPECIAL DAY. ENJOY THE MEMORY OF oldchesterpa

9/4/2001 Time: 5:46:13 AM Comments While living in Chester years ago, one didn't have to go too far to get what was needed. Churches, Schools, Stores, Entertainment, all within walking distance. Carnivals on blocked streets, Church festivals. The Apollo theater, 3 times a week, a bargain at 13 cents. Third Street was a busy street with sailors, merchant marines etc. looking for some fun while on liberty. Plenty of taprooms on our block. Walio's, Chevralotti's, The Lido Cafe, Sanbe's. There was Sam's pool room, Kaiser's pool room, Browne's department store, Ieradi's shoe repair, DeMeglio's, Sanbe's & Marusco's grocery stores, Gianpalmi's Barber shop, Fasano's Barber shop, Buemi's bakery, Zappala's Real Estate, Zommick Real Estate, Marrone's Restaurant, Mancini's Tailor shop, DeFuria's Bank. Next block was Albanesse's Drug store, St Anthony's Church, Pileggi Builders, Dilucido's Bar, Mazza's Beauty shop. On the corner of 3rd & Parker was Minnie's Dry Goods where clothes were bought on the book.(The honor system, no charge plates in those days)Can't forget the Greek bakery, where each night the smell of fresh baked ITALIAN bread made one run to buy it still warm from the oven. The Abruzzi-Molise Club where many a wedding reception was held. A few blocks away was Muscella's Photography Studio.(Think they did every Italian wedding in Chester), Night Owl Brothers, Balestieri's Market, On Pusey Street, Columbus Center, where Frankie Laine & Teresa Brewer performed, also the scene of many wedding receptions. Every need was met within a few blocks. Didn't need a car way back then. But in case you did the Southern Penn bus stopped at every other corner. Uptown, there was Speares, Weinbergs, Tollins, McCrory's, Lou Belles, Becks, Triplex, Kinneys shoe stores, Adams, Murrays men shops, Rodgers, Lincoln's, The Palm Gardens, Freed's, Ches-Penn 5 & 10, Woolworth, Silvers, Spencers Stationery, Stotters, Sears, Sterns, Montgomery Ward. OLD CHESTER,PA? It WAS a GOOD OLD CHESTER, PA

I remember Hurricane Agnes in 1971. The floods also damaged many of the houses in Crozer Park. Flood waters from the overflowing creek behind the Crozer Park houses got up to the second floors of some of those houses. The bridge on Kerlin Street between Upland and Crozer Park was out for awhile due to structural damage from the flood. I remember go down to check out the bridge and seeing about a foot of mud on it. My father was a Chester Policeman and worked many long hours then due to the flood. The National Guard was also called in. Milton Shapp was governor and declared Chester a disaster area. I remember my mother and I made sandwiches for the National Guard involved in the cleanup at the Knights of Columbus building on Providence Avenue. I have saved and still have a special section of the Daily Times that was published back then all about the flood.

This may be a stupid question, but I am going to ask anyway. Does anyone remember the flood that destroyed some of Chester. I was very young, maybe 7 or 8 yrs old. I lived behind St. Robert's on 18th st and the school yard was knocked down into my house which flooded my basement and alot of other homes. I think it destroyed Air Park also, but I am not sure. Does anyone remember what yr that was and what else was destoyed?

I would appreciate any history on this flood.

Thanks

Hi John, I grew up in the West End of Chester too, and I went to William Penn for kindergarden, Miss Higgs was my teacher then I became a "Rez" kid, lol those were truly the days. Anyways I always still went to the May Days at William Penn, I remember as a kid really liking it and it made me feel grown up a bit 'cos that was a good reason for me being allowed to be over the bridge.

They have been gathering all day in the Crest and Wildwood area..If the ones that have gathered so far are only one group from this section of the country, it will be one huge bike train up the Garden State. A while back when they went to Washington, DC, they had traffic tied up on 95 for quite sometime. They even had ambulances along with escorts..It was a great photo opt. for the families and they took full advantage of it.

My dad was killed in 1981 Westinghouse was closing/moving to Florida and he didn't want to uproot the kids etc. That murder was never solved either. I guess it never will. Still miss him very much, even though I am older and have kids of my own.

I miss Chester, the old days. I was to young to remember the theaters, but we had fun hanging out with a group of kids, riding bikes, making pot holders and gymp?(Spelling) box hockey, free lunches, Mays water ice, uniforms to the knee, chaplets on our heads, playing barbies on the front porch, or chinese checkers.

Well its ROAR at the SHORE for all you Harley lovers...hundreds and hundreds of bikers..largest crowd I have seen. The roar of the parade of bikers made one think that that is how the sounds of tanks rolling into war torn areas must sound..One group had escorts and we were stopped from traveling onto a road for not less than 30 minutes...they never seemed to end..Beautiful bikes, patriotic bikers, every type of bike you would want to see. The wildwoods are ROARING again tonight.

I have been trying to find someone that may have a picture of the old Westinghouse building from back in 1943 or 1944. I BELIEVE it was the Westinghouse building. My mother worked there during the war and made blades for the motors of the ships during WWII. The girls were called "Rosie the Riveters." She had gone to school down in Chester and learned to run the milling machine and the lathe. My brother and I are putting a "Memory Album" together for our parents 60th Wedding Anniversary this December and are trying to come up with pictures from their past to put in the album. Speaking of crime in Chester. . . The horrific Market Street Massacre happened in the late 40s. I can only recall two crimes that made headlines in the 50s.

One was a murder at a carnival (held in Trainer between 4th St and the RR tracks). A little girl was found dead behind the carnival grounds, and I believe the crime was never solved.

The other was a young woman who was assualted and murdered in Crozier Park. I don't recall the specifics, but I believe there were two guys caught and convicted.

I don't remember any other crimes (that today would be major news events) happening in Chester during the 50s.

Violent crime in Chester in the 50s was virtually unknown. People felt safe on the streets at all hours. Things changed for the worse in the Violent 60s.

As Granny said, "it was a kinder, gentler time"

To No Name with your ice cream story you could not of said it better.Born and raised in chester on the same street as my fathers family i can remember back to the mid 60's around 65-66 when color ment nothing as kids there was no difference but time did change 3rd-4th grade the black movement walked on chester they came close to my grade school i had a very close friend of color she told me not to be afraid that she would not let anything happen to me. This has stayed with me.And i raise my children not to see color but people then judge them. Children do learn from adults and we should be carefull as to what we teach.I remember when the goverment forced segregation this was a mistake people can live together on there own terms. But when someone tell you how, when, where you have messed with the natural flow. When goverment entered the piture moving people from one area to another they mixed up the mosh pot of chester. Opening the doors to poverty, drugs, abandon housing. It really is a shame and i hope the people and the city can withstand.I don't mean to offend anyone by the term mosh pot but chester's most valuable asset was it's mix of nationalities. I found that mix greatly beneficial.

Work St. became 4th St.
Filbert St. became 2nd St.
James St. became 3rd St.
Free St. became 5th St.
Broad St. became 9th St.
Chester St. became Front St. and then later Edgmont Ave. (part of which was changed c. 1976 on the occasion of the Bicentennial to "Avenue of the States".

Hope this helps...

Hi, I am loving this page. I am looking for anyone who may have information on a family who lived at 2731 W. 2nd street in Chester. My father said it was 2nd and Highland...not sure on that. However, this would be my grandfathers family. His name was Henry Haas he had a brother Julian, we called him Mick. There were also half brother and sisters, thier last name was Miklasz, thier names were Stanley, Laura and Adele. Thier house was on the corner and had a store front, there was never a business run out of this store in my lifetime (1960 on) but I was told that back in the day it was a confectionary store. I would appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks

Today I read

in the times, that Mr. Howard Painter had passed away, he was in his 90's. First time I met Mr. Painter was when I went to work at Chester Cambridge Bank, after I had graduated. His son also went to school pretty much the same time I did. He was the man who showed me how to work the bank proof machines and do settlement. Very nice person and human being. From Chester Cambridge to Phila.Nat'l toFidelity to Core states to First Union and now they are merging again.

Interesting point someone made earlier about race issues in Chester and an earlier age of innocence. I was one of the last (if not the last)white familys to leave the William-Penn projects. I attended Franklin elamentry school. Near the school was a little market/candy store...dont remember what it was called, but apparently the propieters were early black Muslims My little first grade buddys informed me that if you went in and said "Islam Alaka Islam brother James" (please forgive my spelling no disc. intended) He would give you a free water ice. At that time and at that age we didnt understand or were even informed of the issues, but what 7 year old wouldn't go for a free water ice? So of course I went in with my little white face and probaly butchered the religious greeting. Yes i got the free water ice, I also remember them laughing their heads off, and telling me not to come into their store anymore. I'm not sure what grade it was ,but i remember returning after summer vacation and was informed by my friends from the year before that I was the white devil, or that Blacks were a supior race, or that my father killed Martin Luther King. I remember being confused, and hurt by my friends. Of course these were just children who were just copying their parents or adults around them...Hey but what white child was born hating blacks without first being taught by a white adult? Perhaps its wasnt a decade of innocence the former poster remembers being free of race problems but his own young carefree age? No answers in this posting..just observations and remembrances ...some funny some sad. Perhaps someday we can all be as little children as the good book says.

I finally got a chance to look at the REZ pictures and was surprised to see how many faces I remembered. I was invited by a friend but I had to work so I did not get a chance to show up. Even though I was not a Rezzer I feel I mised a great opportunity to see some older aquaintances. Trish tell your dad and Bill jr. I said Hi. Tom Totta's son.

Hey Kate, Did you call to wish your brother a happy B-day on Sunday? Jack (8/31) Art (9/1) and I (9/2) used to celebrate our brthday's every year together.

To Betty I was born on Labor day in 57 in the old Chester hospital.

My aunt use to always say when you were born they closed the hospital. :( I often wondered if she was pulling my leg and I didn't see any info on the closing of Chester Hospital. Was it closed in Sept of 57?

What should be said about Old Chester and the race issue is that "back in the day" 50's & early 60's the whites & blacks got along just fine. I had black friends, we visited each others homes, we didn't have the crime or drugs until later when "outsiders" begun to move in and started the racial war that we all know occurred in the middle 60's and beyond. So while posting here You should state years of when you were their not include present day with what were good days in the City.

It's been awhile since i last posted here. I'm still looking for the location and last name of Betty WALKER. Since my last posting i have learned that she married Bill TURNER. He died in the 70's. Betty re-married and now lives in MD. I knew the WALKER family in the late 40's and always wondered where they are now. Betty had a sister Helen and i understand she passed away. This is a great site and though i am not from CHESTER, i feel i know it well. (At least i remember it from the 40's. Betty went to St. Michael's grade school and graduated from there in 1942. Does anyone know where she went to H.S? Thanks for any info you may have.

The reunion is a reunion open to all those that enjoy this website. ..Putting something like this reunion together is not an overnight project. John has put many hours into it along with many others that will be there to assist him to make it another successful event for "OLDCHESTERPA" . Yes I said OLDCHESTERPA. It is an event to bring people together so that they can bring their memories and hopefully some old pictures and papers for John to scan and add to this OLDCHESTERPA web site and its library of treasured information.

It is not a forum for the problems of Chester as they exist today. The problems of Chester are for the governing body of the city to work out, not Johns. He is not the Mayor of Chester, he is only a man interested in documenting what has never been documented before in a structured manner. He is indexing events so that there is a on going history for the visitor or researcher.

Why have we all elected John as the savior of this community. He is a man with a website, that’s all.

This is only a website of memories, not a real town..Although many of us feel as though it is a family .This website can be anything the owner wants it to be...that's the funny thing about the web, there are very few restrictions. Because it is on the web it is open for all to see, for all to post on a open message board. Lets move on folks, John is the owner of this site, not us.

If people want a site dealing with the issues of today in Chester, create it, let it grow as Johns site grew…even this website had growing pains.

Give this man a break already. Post memories, send information. Fill this library with memories that will help document places and events. We are all welcomed visitors here.. Lets act like a guest would in his house.

(More about William Henry Ridley Esq. from The Rose Tree Families by Jane Levis Carter) A quite different turn of the century account concerns Cornelius Ridley. Once a house slave on the Thomas Ridley Plantation at South- hampton, Virginia, scene of the Nat Turner Rebellion in the 1830s. Cornelius was born around 1834-36, son of a Ridley master and a black slave woman. His red hair and green eyes helped him to escape north, perhaps with the help of the Quaker Underground Railway, when he was around twenty years of age. He was taken in by the Isaac Yarnall family on Providence Road, who helped him receive a rudimentary education at Blue Hill School. In time, a girl Cornelius had known on a neighboring plantation, Martha Jane, came to live with the Yarnalls. Mrs. Yarnall taught Martha Jane to read the Bible. Soon she and Cornelius were married. They moved to the old Minshall house, then a derelict structure on the George Lewis property, across Providence Road from the Friends Meeting House. Here their son, William Henry Ridley, was born. Meanwhile, Cornelius Ridley had found steady employment as a driver for Hawley-Snowden Hardware Company, in Media. William Ridley graduated from Media High School in 1887, then continued his education by reading law with Louis R. Richards, a Media attorney. Ridley was admitted to the Delaware County Bar March 25, 1891, the first Negro to have achieved such an honor. He continued law studies at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually admitted to the Philadelphia Bar, though he confined his practice to Chester, Media and West Chester. His wife was the former Josepha Phillips, born in the Virgin Islands. While William Henry Ridley was carving such an extraordinary career, his brother, George Washington Ridley, became sheriff of South Media; a sister, Rachel, was the first black nurse to graduate from the old Women's Medical College in Philadelphia; a second sister, Rosa, trained as a secretary. Eventually she married Dr. Everett White, the first Negro physician to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. White had been a protege of Caroline and Casper Miller, himself the grandson of the internationally distinguished Dr. Caspar Wister Pennock. Thus, within a single generation removed from slavery, an entire family exploded into professional recognition. When William Henry Ridley, Esq., died on February 18, 1945, the Delaware County Bar Association met to pay tribute to him and to attend the funeral services. A resolution passed by the Association, declared that Mr .Ridley was a man who, when his word was given, could be depended upon. This community has been deprived of a respected and reliable citizen and the Bar of a lawyer who maintained the highest principals. Lawyer Ridley is remembered by his granddaughter, Rayetta Ortiga Anderson, who was raised by William and his wife, as totally interested in me-my hopes and achievements as a person. We would talk for hours about books, Civic affairs and so on, until my grandmother would call us to come to bed. One cannot leave the Ridley story without recalling that southern Ridleys had in their ancestry historic Nicholas Ridley, burned in 1555 by Bloody Mary for his heretical beliefs. John Simcock, the colonial Friend who was himself a new kind of heretic, named both Ridley Township and its bordering stream for his old world home in Ridley, Cheshire. Thus, after three centuries, the strains joined in the Quaker Yarnall household not far from Ridley Creek. While Americans took a significant step toward overcoming racial prejudice in knowing Cornelius Ridley's family.

Much of Chester looks like the slums of a near-east war torn city. I wonder who the principal players are in this result. Personal safety requires you to avoid the city after sundown, or drive through quickly with windows and doors locked. It could happen anywhere, bad is bad, etc. Memories are pretty much all that is left of a great place to grow up. Small wonder that those memories are limited.

Morpheus... How right you are, the history of 'old chester' is rich with the contributions of the residents regardless of ethnicity...One has to know of an incident to report on same...As for a particular group of people I suspect people from that group bear the brunt of responsibility to post information in that regard...For the most part I believe the posters here use 'generalized' stories and anecdotes about Chester, the people, the businesses, etc. My opinion, this is good...hope it stays that way...

For no entry in the name slot... When I post they are carefully worded, I might add that they would be palatable if I chose to eat them first as you suggest...Having no fear of anyone knowing who I am helps...

Yes, I'm back for now so I can respond to MORPHEUS - he serves a response. At one time, during the last year, Morpheus, we were talking about the underground in Media and surrounding areas that existed during and after the Civil War for the black slaves and we were asking and looking for more information on that. There was even something mentioned about an island close by that could perhaps have been a "holding" place.

Lots of information was posted, but we are not a reseach area nor a place to find valuable information, we can only add what we personally have read or just plain "know". Harvey contributed a site regarding the first black attorney in Chester - pretty sure he was an attorney. Try to find that post by Harvey(not over a year old), read it, and if you can "find" more information or add anything to what we discussed, you would be contributing valuable information on the history of old Chester.

To make it easier for you to go through the archives here, and just in case you don't know, as you click on every year/half-year, at the top of your screen is an "Edit" button for you to click on. When the drop screen appears, click "Find" - type in "Harvey" and that way, you will only go to the posts by Harvey during that timeframe. Then, you should find all that was contributed there.

Let us know - we care and are very interested!

For those asking, Chester Machine Works was located at Second and Jeffrey Streets, just up from the West End Boat Club. The building was so close to the freight tracks that you could reach out the window and touch them as they went by. Chester Machine made everything imaginable out of metal from small sprockets to two story tall boiler plates. The owner, Leon Steinberg also owned Hardware and Supply Co. of Chester (HSC). Not quite sure where Lyle Walker lived but he attended North Chester Baptist Church--may have been an elder there. The "high moral tone" of the Bryton workplace was in great part a result of Lyle's gentlemanly, moral manner. Some of the guys there would jokingly accuse (credit?) John cannot add to this site what he has not received. He has added a link to obtain information regarding the new community

http://www.oldchesterpa.com/neighborhoods_index.htm#wellington_ridge

above is a link to the housing authority of Chester, including floor plans for the houses that will be sold or rented.

This is a private website...No one pays for it except John Bullock...Not the city of Chester, not the county of Delaware, Not the state of Pennsylvania, Just John..it is very costly and growing more so daily..each post on the Newsstand, each historic picture, each bit of information adds to the base price of this site.

We the posters do not pay admission, but from the hits daily, it is the best show in town..

On the sides of the page you see space for advertising...they have been bare with only John's information on them for weeks. I am personally surprised that all these shops and businesses that are linked to on this site have not placed an ad here to defray some of Johns cost. The exposure for a business on this site is tremendous.

Aside from John's pocket, he pays for this site by products he sells about Chester at his

http://www.oldchesterpa.com/store.htm

be it a mug, tote bag, shirt or calander..The sale will help this site to stay alive. The ads will help keep this site alive, business, professional, and memorials.... Originally it cost $35.00 a month, that's just under $500.00 a year. With over 1300 pages, it has to have skyrocketed in cost monthly..the archives alone must cost him a pretty penny..an expensive hobby for John..

This is not John's real life's work, it is his hobby that has developed into a full time job. The trips he makes to Chester come out of his pocket, the cost of scanning and printing when needed comes from his pocket. The hours he spends typing and going thru tons of infomation takes away time from his family and life. We want this site to continue, then lets support it. Ask a business owner that you are friendly with to become an advertising partner to the site. If they are not familiar with the site, introduce them to it. Plenty of Lawyers enter the site, your allowed to advertise these days, so why not here.

All people are part of this site, it is a rainbow of color and a United Nation of backgrounds...A foundation was laid two years ago here in Chester. It is growing story by story...by story.

Under the heading of Brickyards in the Business page, Harbison Walker should be added. It was located in the East end of the city.

By the way, if I recall correctly, Jim Bowers (the CHS basketball player and Annapolis grad.) worked at Bryton the summer of 1955

Bryton Chemical--ah yes. I worked there uring the summers of 1955 and 1956. The company made gasoline additives. Had two separate sections as I recall--the Calcium plant and the barium plant. The summer guys would spend many days shoveling out the residue from the calcium tanks. The temps. in the tanks were over 100 degrees and I'd lose 5lbs during a shoveling shift. Lyle Walker was the foreman at the time--prince of a guy. I remember many faces of the men who worked there but can't recall many names. Worked all 3 shifts at one time or another. Of the different "factory" jobs, I had, Bryton was one of the most "benign" environments.

Hello: Thank you for something new to the site.

Tell us about the Bryton Chemical Co. in Trainer, PA...where was it located, what did they produce (chemicals yes,) that we would recognize by a name, do you have any company literature that we could use on the What's New section to re-acquaint people with its history. Hope to see you at the OldChesterPA reunion in October...

I don't post often at all but check the postings regularly and have come across Trainer being mentioned. I used to work for Bryton Chemical Co. in Trainer in the sixties. It was a fantastic company to work for and I sure did learn alot from them. Management and staff were a great bunch of people. "Hello" to anyone who may have been there at that time.
