Old Chester, PA: Guest Book entries January-March 2001
i'm looking for details of the wade dump fire that took place in the 1970's i think. i already checked the daily times website and did not find anything. my uncle was a police officer at the time in the city and we just found out that he is dying of cancer. my mother does not remember the fire even though we lived in chester during that time. she thinks she may have been on vacation at the time. she is really the one looking for the information. please contact me at rene_young2000@yahoo.com
[Editor's note: The date of the Wade Dump Fire was February 2, 1978]
Great website The newstand really brings back memories,as a junior at Chester high in 1956 i worked at the newstand from 9pm until I closed it at 1am after second shift from Scott Paper got their papers & cigerettes etc.I believe people named Smith owned it at that time. Heard about the site from my sister Elaine (Ellis) Bishop on Friday 3/29/01. The comments about places and people bring back a lot of memories.WE grew up on west 11th st. in Eyre Park and my wife Jean (White ) Ellis grew up on Thomas ST in Sun Village.Keep up the good work and I hope to visit the site often. John Ellis Woodman.1@netzero.net
hey did anybody grow up in mccaffery village
John The Doziers and Henrietta Landis are correct. The diner was at 4th & Morton.I lived at 5th& Madison and remember the diner being there in the early fourties. Why no remains--diners are moved. Also, the Sun Ship parking lot was at 3rd& Morton not 4th per Zach.

John: As you know, my dad's drug store was at 7th and Lloyd, and one of the greatest things that I remember about the neighborhood was the old Lloyd Field at 6th and Lloyd. I remember many different events held there. I remember a circus there one time in the fifties, boxing and wrestling matches, high school and semi pro football, and of course the great baseball played there, ranging from teener league (I played on Lloyd A.C. in the Chester Teener league team in 1960-61 under manager John Zosh), delco league, and even some minor league teams played exhibition games there. And of course the King and his Court. Perhaps a specific section could be set up for old Lloyd Field so that anyone with recollections of specific events could write in. Would love to hear from some of the former people who played there, also. Joe Caranci, Jr. JPCJRLAW@aol.com
[3/26/2001 Editor's note: The Lloyd Field page with message board is up! - Thanks for the suggestion Joe!]
Hello All, Reading the recent Fire Dept. entries brought back some memories of a couple of tragic events that happened in the 1950s. Perhaps someone has more details on this and could add further info. I recall that while fighting a fire on Edgemont Ave.,between 6th.&7th. Sts.[I think it was at the Lincoln Dept. Store]a fire hose got out of control of it's handler striking him in the head and killing him![he was struck by the nozzle] At a later date[I think] when answering an alarm, two Fire Trucks collided at the intersection of 5th.& Edgemont. If I remember correctly, there was loss of life from this accident and both pieces of equiptment were totally destroyed. This was a major accident that resulted in a revamping of the routes that all Fire Companies were to follow when responding to an alarm. If anyone else can add or correct me on this please respond either directly to the site or e-mail. Thank you, Paul D. Crowther pcrowther4@home.com

It was so wonderful to find this website! While I have never lived there myself, my whole family grew up in Chester. Over the years, I have visited many times (the Farmer's Market on Kerlin St!) and heard tons of stories about what it used to be like. It is so nice to be able to see old pictures of the places I have heard about for so long.
My grandparents, Naoma & Mike (Meyer) Abrams lived in Sun Village on Remington Street and I know they owned a bar at some point. Both of my parents, Raymond Lowthert & Jo-Ann Abrams, went to Chester High School and graduated in 1956 & 1957. My uncle, Jerry Abrams, also went to CHS and graduated in 1955. My father is now married to another CHS alumni, Virginia Knox. While I'm not sure of her maiden name, I know she also graduated in 1956. Our family doctor was always Dr Leonard Rosen and I was a very saddened a few years ago to hear that he had passed away.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows or knew any member of my family. Some have email, some don't, but I would be glad to pass along their addresses if you contact me. My email address is tracyvaughn@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Hello CHESTER! Would like to know about some of the class of '76 (high school years) but rather the class of '72 (8th grade) from Holy Ghost School on 3rd & Booth St.

John - great website. I visit often. Born in Chester 1951. Attended St. Anthony's School - graduated in 1964. Notre Dame (graduated 1968). Married another Chesterite from 19th Street. I remember Speares, Rodgers, Great leopard, the jewish deli downtown(name?), DCNB?(bank), working at Sacred Heart Hospital as a candy striper in the 60's, the variety shows from St. Anthony's, Dr. Mary DiMedio. My grandfather, Louis Calvarese, was building inspector of Chester (years?). My father's sister owned Madelyn's Market at 3rd & Pennell Streets. Just some thoughts - someone really should contact Fred Muscella regarding pictures of Chester. He probably has some great shots. Anyway, anyone wanting to contact me or looking for information about Castaldi, Calvarese, Murray, can contact me Susan Murray at yam1256@aol.com.
I am looking for someone that might have old pictures, slides or home movies of the Old Riverview Amusement park, in Pennsville, NJ... A lot of people from the Chester Area travel by means of the Wilson Line. Scott Paper used to hold their Summer Picnics there.
Best regards, Peter Krasowski, Silverdime@aol.com

Hello to all the "Village People". I grew up on Morton Avenue in Sun Village across the street from the gas station where two of the greatest guys, Willy and John, worked and fixed my flat tires on my bikes and, later, on my dad's car. Went to St. Rose of Lima and Notre Dame Moylan. (Graduated St. Rose of Lima in 1964 and Notre Dame in 1968.) Spent most of my free time roller skating at the "Great Leopard". Made my money at the Melrose Diner and York's Department Store. I married a cadet from PMC and the rest is history. Kathy ScubaZebra@aol.com

I found your site last night. I was hoping someone from Lincoln School would respond. I used to live on MacDonald Street and went to Trinity Church at 8th and Butler. My great grandparents lived on the corner of 7th Street. The door was always open to anyone. One of my favorite memories was going to Weinbergs with my mother and watching as the girl behind the counter made a box of face powder to match my mother's complexion. I also remember going to Woolworths and getting an ice cream soda at the fountain. I used to buy my 45 records at the store on the corner of the street right near the Sears store. The State Theater or the Boyd Theater were a Saturday afternoon happening. Remember Joel's Kids Store? That's where we went to get our Sunday clothes. After church we would go to Linton's Restaurant for lunch. Many a day I would go to Nicolitis's (sp?) for a 25 cent loaf of bread and a 10 cent ice cream cone. On the way back to school after lunch we would stop in at Abbotts Candy Store and get those little round licorice records. Remember them? I have so many memories of those days. It is nice to hear some of the other memories people are sharing herein. If anyone would like to e-mail me, my address is cycledude@erols.com. I really want to hear from Lincoln Schoolites. Hope you are out there. Some names I remember are Patricia Teti, Francis Arcucci, Mary Constantini, Ronald Ellis, Theresa Freddy, Anne Smith, Timmy Replogle, Leslie Buchanan, Jack Maslin, William Sammons, Marie DiMao, Sophie Pappas, Linda Dick and Alfred Brennan. Does anyone know where any of them are?
Just found this site, very interesting , nostalgic, informative. I was raised in Glenolden , went to St.James66, graduated PMC70,Widener University76. Many fond memories of Chester: Murray's Mens clothes, activities at the "Y", Weinberg's, Speares, Sears, John's Doggie Shop, Ann's Donuts. Anyone remember a priest, eastern rite, I believe, Father Pauxtis(not sure of the spelling or the name of his parish) from the '50's???? My father was a physician and Father Pauxtis was one of his patients. I remember him as being very kind. Ed Hand hand898232@aol.com

My name is Linda Winfree. My cousin Otto Greenleaf just told me about this site. I was going through the police department and noticed that my uncle, Howard Winfree, is not listed. He was the Chief of Police in Chester during the late 50s or early 60s. I will have to find out the exact dates from my father. My father used to live on Madison Street and my mom is from Madison Street as well. Her last name is Traub. I went to Lincoln school during the 50s when Miss Weber and then Mr. Kapochus (sp?) were principals. Is there anyone out there that went to Lincoln School during that time?

Wow! Seeing the newsstand brought back a lot of memories. I was raised in Chester and fondly remember the slogan over the train station: "What Chester Makes, Makes Chester". Cliff Ashbridge 1514 Walnut Street (left Chester in 1959 for the world)

I forgot to include my E-mail address when I last visited the site. Sorry about that!
My name is Cliff Ashbridge and I'd like to hear from some of the gang I grew up with. My family was established in the Chester area way back in the late 1600's. My great, great, great, great grandfather, George Ashbridge came from England in 1698 and settled in Chester. He served on the Cololial Assembly with Benjamin Franklin. There is a development somewhere in Delaware County called The Ashbridge Estates. It was named for my ancestors. I now live in Florida, near Ft. Lauderdale. Cliff Ashbridge lakeemeraldmgt@aol.com
See what happens when you don't proof your copy? It was Colonial Assembly, not Cololial Assembly.
I'm looking for a copy of the Chester High 1959 year book. If anyone knows how I can get one, please contact me at lakeemeraldmgt@aol.com. I lost mine a long time ago.

Greetings again Chester, i just finished reading the brief history of Scott PaperCo. My father Leonard Owsiany worked there for over 30 years. Just as a footnote to the history of the company, I remember the pre-Union Scott Paper days, when family picnics were held and employee's children recieved a gift from the company at Christmas time. Anyone else remember? tomch58@yahoo.com
Hello...I certainly enjoyed this website. I am looking for information on the name Deakyne. I read of a Captain Deakyne who was in charge of the steambarge "Sarah" which traveled from Chester to Philadelphia in 1882. I believe this Captain Deakyne may be my g.grandfather. I am also interested in the steambarge and its history. Can anyone help me? Please e-mail me at cbmjja@cs.com. Thank you in advance.
Hi fellow Chester people.

Thank you for idea of Coffee Mugs with Newstand on cup many times it was my responsiblity to go to Newstand to get the latest edition of Phila. Inquirer, as a young boy. Running past St. Michaels school with the fear of the dark shadows.

John, This is a great site. I was born and raised in Linwood but spent a lot of time in Chester, shopping, eating, going to movies. Have lived in Trainer for 40 years, belonged to Rez from 1960 to 1993. I am interested in learning about a place called "Young Women's Christian Home". A boarding home for single women. I am not sure of the name. My mother lived there after coming to Chester from Canada. Her maiden name is "Pothier", Married my Dad, Arthur Landers and moved to Linwood. both worked at American Viscose, daddy for 43 years. I attended Holy Saviour grade school and Notre Dame High. I am very much interested in searching my family. Thanks for the opportunity to put in my family history.

Hi. My name is Gary Garvine. My mother is Agnes Frances (Fran) nee Blythe Garvine and my father was Gilbert (called Dugie) Garvine. He worked for Southern Penn and was there when the fire happened. Dad has since passed (1992). I grew up in Chester in the 60's and 70's and remember going "downtown" to Spears, Weinbergs, Welsh Restaurant, Woolworths lunch counter, etc. Also remember the street lamps with their decorations at Christmas.
As a kid growing up during these years, I loved the stories my parents would tell me about how Chester used to be. This site brings back those stories and now puts pictures to what were once just words.
I have a request for anyone who can help me. Am working on the genealogy for the Garvine family. Anyone who has information, the help would be appreciated. My e-mail is Djr888fan@aol.com
Also, John, What about the Sealtest plant on 12th Street, Habbersets Meat plant, and Abbotts Dairy.
Once again, I thank you John for creating this site and keeping the spirit of Old Chester alive
you suck get some better pictures ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
As a Urian, I am very happy to see your website commemorating what once was a lovely town. My family has lived in Delaware County since the mid 1600s. Since then, however, we have preferred the Main Line suburbs over the South-East Delaware County burbs.

Sad to say,but true. Chester had it's share of lunatics,as evidenced by the posting on Jan.19th.at 3:19 P.M. I suspect this person can't read and relies on pictures! Paul
I grew up in Highland Gardens, West End. Chester High Class of 1970. This is a good site. I recognize a few of the names folks have posted. I'm down in South Georgia now, and guess what? A fella by the name of Bob Watson has a sandwhich shop here called the Cheesesteak Factory. My daughter went in to the shop and Bob and her started trading stories/names. Turns out he's from the Gardens too. He's my older brothers age, but remembered me when I was a kid. Small world, eh? My wife is from Chester too. She grew up on W 6th st. We always had a saying in my family....you can take the boy outta Chester, but you can't take the Chester outta the boy. Anybody remeber Shorty's pool hall in the basement near the State Movie theater? Anybody remember when the Chester West Biddy League basketball team allstars won the World Championship down in Puerto Rico?.........Regards from "Pokey" rjr2142@hotmail.com

Hi - I grew up in Chester and graduated from CHS in 1969. First we lived in an apartment on 12th Street and I remember there being a "Madison Grille" on the corner of 12th & Madison owned by John Tkatz or something like that. We moved to 704 E. 18th St in 1966 and my parents lived there till they retired to Alabama in 1993. I remember going to Larkin Elementary and to a small store across the street from it where $.05 would buy a whole bunch of penny candy especially when you could get 2 for a penny! And I remember Rosenblatt's Music Store. Mrs. Rosenblatt was our music teach at Larkin. Attended Smedley Jr. High and then on to Chester High. Many a time I've eaten a John's doggie. I worked during high school at L&H Sporting Goods for Harry and Larry Goldstein. My dad worked at Sun Ship all those years. I used to love to ride the fairy over to New Jersey and back. And who could ever forget the hoagies and Herr's potatoe chips! I'm not living in Alabama where I was born, but still think about Chester. Last time I was there was in 1993. Thanks to John we can still visit Chester. Would love to hear from anyone Debbie (Clayton)- dwiley8094@aol.com
Looking for JOAN WATSON. She graduated from Chester High in 1964. I knew her many years ago. If you would give her my E-mail address or send info to help, I would appreciate it. Thank you. Please respond to BBShumate@aol.com Betty
I raised two children in Chester. We lived there for almost 40 years. My husband worked at Sun Ship until it closed and then worked for the Alabama bunch until they closed as well. Both my children graduated from Chester High. They received good educations and had a great school spirit. Cheerleading, Little League, Band, Football the whole nine yards. In fact, My daughter was the first to win the Miss Yell in competition of several schools. We enjoyed going down town to shop, didn't need to travel to Philly for anything then. Spear's was the greatest and no one could touch John's Doggies. We retired in 1993 and moved to Alabama. My husband and son have both passed away but my daughter and I both now live in Alabama. I have lots of fond memories of Chester. And yes, there was a diner at 4th and melrose but right now I can't think of the name of the owner. Thanks for keeping some of the nice memories alive. The picture of the Newsstand really brought back the years! Betty Clayton bscchurch@aol
I lived in the Sun Hill area of Chester from 1958 (born at Chester Hospital) to 1981, and went to Saint Roberts and Saint James. Here are some of the things I remember about Chester and my youth:
I can still remember my Kindergarten teacher at Stetser, Ms Wilson. She was one of two people who seemed to have been around forever, the other was Frank Toole.
I can also remember the fire horn blasting from the Goodwill Firehouse, and the chimes from PMC.
I used to get my haircut at Rudys barber shop on Morton Avenue, right next to the Melrose dinner. We got our Hoagies at Squires.
I can remember when the Cadets would throw their hats in the air after the graduation ceremony at PMC, and the kids would be lined up on the field running to grab a hat.
I remember getting my Sunday bests at Spears. The boys department was downstairs. And driving to downtown Chester on Friday night, and dropping my mom off so she could go shopping. We would pick here up latter on. Can you still do that?
I remember the Pulaski Day parades, sledding in Washington park, and walking from Sun Hill to the Chester East Little League field. What ever happened to Whitey or AL ("Watch that ball!", "Stay off them tracks!", "Please remain standing for the Little League pledge."). I can still hear the words.
And one other thing - My Aunt Julie was the best organist ever at the Holy Ghost Church.
J. Bychkowski email - jbychkow@excite.com
Let's see. I remember a great donut store that was on Edgemont Avenue in the block before you got to 12th street. I used to walk our dog early in the mornings on the weekend and stop in there to get a nice warm donut. I remember the old railroad tracks across from the apartments we lived in on 12th street. When we first moved there you had to get used to trains coming through during the night. They would rumble and sometimes rattle the windows and of course blow the whistle. Once there was a train wreck right there and there were bannas all over the street and tracks. There was also a little park across the railroad tracks and there was a big old cannon at the top of the park where it met Upland Street. After we moved to 18th and Chestnut Streets (second house from the corner), I remember watching the PMC cadets practice their pursian rifle drill team. They would practice in the Stetser schools yard across the street from our house. It was really great to watch them and you always knew who the knew cadets were in the beginning of a new drill season. They won many awards in the rifle drill team competitions. I remember when they would have the parade, usually around Halloween for the Freshman cadets. Most times they would make them march around the streets in their underwear and then stand at attention in the field for the "Bon Fire" which was where they would cover them with shaving cream, feathers, raw eggs, etc. It was their initiation to PMC. I also remember seeing those guys wear those wool uniforms in the hot weather and falling out from the heat sometimes at their functions they'd have on the fields. Remember the cannon being shot each time they would score a touchdown at their football games. Those were the days...I always admired those guys. Debbie (Clayton)

I am searching for Kate Pearson. She is listed in the 1888-1889 Old Chester City directory. I need to know if her daughter Ellizabeth Pearson was living with her at 540 Penn Street during those years. Elizabeth is my grandmother and Kate is my great garandmother. My namr is Ruth Rocco. My E Mail address is RRocco170@aol.com . Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. (Do you have city directories available for those years)
What a wonderful site! I've had so much fun looking through it. I've become more and more interested in the history of Chester since we've been working on the Pennsylvania Military College Museum here at Widener. I would love to hear from people who have stories about PMC. Also, my current hobby is trying to track down the grave of Eliz. Wilson, the lady who was hung in Chester in the 18th century. I would also love to hear from people interested in that sad story. My email is Rebecca.M.Warda@widener.edu

CLASS OF 61 CHESTER HIGH
This is an excellent website. Thank you for all of the hard work and effort that you put into it.
I am a 1984 graduate of "The High" and I have been interested in the history of Chester since I was a kid. I grew up on 9th and Pennell Streets and I have fond memories of my dad taking us to Jersey on the ferry. In fact, seeing the picture of the ferry toll booth flooded my mind with great childhood memories.
Growing up, my parents told me that I was born in Chester Hospital (in 1966) and I was told that it stood where the high school is now. I had never seen a picture of the hospital until now. Thank you.
Even though I am only 34 years old, I enjoy reading others recollections of life in Chester in the 40s-70s. Thanks for the history lessons.

Thanks so much for developing this website. I am really enjoying so many things about Chester. It has brought back so many wonderful memories. I can be reached at Gerry@financialhouse.com Gerry Radolan Gropper (Class of '59).
My maiden name was Joan Starkey. What a great web site. Chester was a fantastic place to grow up in the '50s. I'd really enjoy hearing from Henrietta Landis. She and I went to Smedley Jr. High together. We lost touch when we went to high school - she went to Chester High and I went to Notre Dame. My e-mail address is joanmb@adelphia.net
John:Thanks for arranging the luncheon on the 19th.I think that everyone there had a good time. Have already talked to Joe Hess who who wished he had been there. If anyone from Chester High, class of 45, is reading this and hasn't been contacted for class reunions, let me hear from you. Dot Ferrari dot-ferrari@juno.com
Peter G. Benson (born 1957, in Chester, PA) Looking for information on possible relatives who lived in Chester in the 1930s-1970s or so. Last name is "Handy". I understand there was a "Margaret Handy" who lived "up on the hill". I have no info as to whether or not she was married.
Any info on *any* Handys who live/lived in Chester, PA -- regardless of era, would be greatly appreciated. Email me -- (Peter Benson) at bnsndgtl@juno.com. Thanks in advance for whatever you can offer!
Peter G. Benson (born 1957, in Chester, PA) I attended Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.) grade school at 3rd & Norris Streets in the early 1960s.
Any I.H.M. alumni reading this? Remember a nun who was our school principal (named Mother MaryAnn Joseph). She'd be summoned to our class, if there was a student that needed serious disciplining.
Upon her arrival to our classroom, with leather strap (which was splayed in many strips) in hand, the class immediately went into absolute silence. The offending student/s was/were directed to the front of the class, and there instructed to pull down the pants (yes -- in public view), and to bend over -- while all the rest of us watched in utter fear and trepidation.
Now during her fierce swinging of the leather strap (what was that strap called, *anyway*?) "Mother" would turn beet red. And when she was done her bidding, those most hardened of malefactors in our class, were feverishly whelping and gushing with tears which the majority of us never imagined they possessed.
*** Anyone know of persons with the last name of "Handy", and of African-American descent, who lived in Chester, PA., on "the Hill"?
I'm told the area was somewhere near Boots 'n Bonnets Bar -- A "Margaret Handy" who lived in Chester, in the 1930s and later) reportedly lived on a street which no longer exists, due to I-95 construction.
I hope to find the name of that small street, and any "Handys" in Chester's past or present -- whether they lived on the Hill or not. BTW, how can I find names of persons buried at Chester Rural Cemetery? Email me at bnsndgtl@juno.com.
Dear John: Just wanted all to know of the wonderful time we had at the Oldchesterpa luncheon. Everyone shared their memories along with the yearbooks and other information they brought along. Thanks again John for arranging such a fine event. I bet the next luncheon will bring out even more "old" Chester people.
Janet (Benson) Maglio
in response to Jenny about the site, she said "it's not much" in her posting. I couldn't disagree more. John, you have done a tremendous job, it has allowed me and lots of other people to journey back, reconnect and revisit the city and the people that we were. It's full of information and nostagia. Thanks for all you do. Terry Owsiany McHugh tomch58@yahoo.com
Just checked out the pix of the fine chester folks attending the lunch get together on feb 19. I noticed that "Joker" Jack chambers was the only one not smiling! He was probably just very upset that he waited at 4th & Morton for over half an hour and no one shoiwed up to join him.
Hello:
I am trying to find information on Zebulon (Zack) Thomas, house 12, Patterson's Row, Chester. He lived there in the 1870's, and I believe he and his family worked at Patterson's Mill. Any help with Zebulon, or Patterson's Row or Mill, would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Kelly Thomas, Neteducator@aol.com
Hello:
I'm looking for Chester City Directories, 1865-68, 1871, and 1874-78.
The Delaware County Historical Society does not have them.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Kelly Thomas, Neteducator@aol.com
John, Thanks. I just left Chester Rural with my wife and her mother. We found my wife's GGF, Franklin Grayson. Her Mother knew where to look, but to our delight we also found her GGGF Benjamin Grayson in another section. The woman in the office was a great help and spoke highly of you. My wife's other GParents are buried there. They are Robert A. Adams and his father Robert A. They all lived in Chester. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. If your looking for info on families from Chester, you should try the federal census. It lists not just names but also addresses, occupations, places of employment and state or country of origin. My name is Roy Palmer and I grew up in McCaffery Village. I lived at 11th & Booth St. and there were 6 corner stores within 3 blocks of my house. They were McGlone's in Highland Gardens and it still open, Joe's at 10th & Highland, Sade's at 10th & Harwick, Queenie's at 10th & Booth, Lesyck's at 10th & Pine and Goodsie's 12th & the alley between Booth & Clover. It was only a one car garage but I was there most days buying penny candy. There were 2 supermarkets, FoodFair at 9th & Harwick and Penn Fruit at 9th & Booth. I "pushed carts" there which meant that I asked customers if I could pack their bags and push their cart to their car(hopefully) or their house(dreaded because it kept me away from the store to long) for a Quarter. I also would shine shoes at the local bars. They were Brownie's at 10th & Booth, Sabande's at Clover & Keystone Rd., The Village Cafe(the most popular bar) at 9th and Keystone across from Vesuvio's, McClosky's next to Penn Fruit, Sloppy Joe's(I still go ther sometimes)at 7th & Harwick and the Gateway(the country music bar)at 9th & Highland. Thats all for now, my son wants the computer. I'll reminisce some more in the future. rbpainter12@aol.com
Regrading Toby Farms School. It was constructed in 1963, with an addition in 1966. It currently is grades K to 5 with 741 students. Since 1998 the Principal is Joyce A. Wells. Prior to Mrs. Wells the principal was Robert Crawford (1991-1998) Before Mr. Crawford the principal was William Jones. The school and community of Toby Farms was built on farmland owned by John P. Crozer. At the time that Crozer owned the land it was called Sheperd's Plain. A clock tower stood on the property and was torn down in 1971. The clock tower can be seen on the shoulder patch of any member of the Chester Township police force. Crozer renamed his farm in 1916. He dropped the name Sheperd's Plain and replaced it with Toby's Farm. Toby was a horse owned by Crozer and a particular favorite of his. Over time the possessive "Toby's Farm" has become the plural Toby Farms. John Costello, Vice Principal Toby Farms School costello50@hotmail.com
Hello Chester,
My name is Steve Shooster. You may remember my Grandfather Frank and Father Herman and his brothers Harry and Izzy. I have heard stories my whole life about a gas station that became a Drive In restuarant only later to be torn down to make way for the superhighway.
My father, Herman lives in Florida with Dorothy his wife and I do also. I now have 4 kids of my own. I am an artist and I have completed a painting of the drive inn however I am looking for more pictures of it as I have no clue about the colors and much more.
Chester must have been something else back then to inpire this web site.
If you want to reach me please respond to shoosty@bellsouth.net
Great web site. I found out about it from my father, Nick Chiominto,Sr., who heard about it from Bill Crystle,3rd. I moved to Southern California 21 years ago, and this site has brought back fond memories of Chester. I especially enjoyed the comments from Jay Bychkowski about growing up in Sun Hill where we were neighbors. I look forward to many more visits to this web site.

John, great job with the site. Grew up in the Chester Park area in the 70's and 80's. While I don't have memories of the "glory days", I still have alot of great memories. Graduated St. Roberts in 82 and St. James in 86. My parents are life-long residents and still live in the City. Dad was a West End boy, Rez and Saint James (1945), and Mom grew up on Madison, between 20th and 22nd,and went to Saint Roberts and Notre Dame. Spent alot of time in Chester Park since we lived on Parkway Ave. Me and Dad would walk up to the flag pole on Edgmont Ave. and then over to Hall's at Avon and Edgmont for a candy bar. Also remember going to the band shell to see the Chester City Band, the playground off of Houston St.,and going to the waterfalls and playing on the big rocks near the bridge over Ridley Creek. When the snow got packed down and icy on Elkinton Blvd. from the top of the hill down to the bridge, there wasn't a better place to go sledding. Thanks again for a great site. Can't wait for my parents to see it.

Message to Chester High School class of 1959: We are now planning to hold our 45th reunion in 2004. This may seem like a long way off, but when you consider the planning and searching for classmates, the time goes by very quickly. Any classmate interested in the reunion should contact the Chairman, Cliff Ashbridge at lakeemeraldmgt@aol.com or write to him at 132 Marine Lake Drive, Pembroke Park, Florida 33009.
Nice site!Glad to see someone has taken an interest in the colorful history of Chester. Our neighbor in Collingdale was a bartender at the Chester Club for many years-Iassumed until it closed in the late 50's? Also my uncle Ray Harris was owner of Harris&Lenoard US Royal tire Co-9th st?They served Scott Paper fleet trucks and had a recap business. He handled appliances and had the first b/w Emerson TVs in the area-they put a 12" in the show window w/a large magnifing glass on a stand(distorted picture very large)people pushed to see the TV and broke his show window. Hope I can scrounge up some items ads etc to send to your site.
Best Wishes W R Hazlett
