Hey George...Those old days are special! I must have been there for the 3rd grade play, but can't remember much of it.I went to public school in 4th grade because of some kind of spat between my dad and Father Lypin(?) What a culture shock that was! The one thing that I do remember about Holy Ghost days was that me, you, Tony Triboletti and Lenny Berra hung around together and were always in trouble. One time, Sister Myron swung a pointer at me, I ducked, and she hit Tony with it. I think that was for kickin' some kid in the butt when we were on stage rehearsing something. (I had a three stooges flashback). Do you remember that? Have a great New Year!!!

Well, the Christmas holiday is passing, and on to the New Year. Kind of interesting how people change from Xmas, to New Years. It’s like New Years is a ‘devil may car, party until you drop’, mentality. I have been there. Laryssa, you have a cool tradition with the plates set for departed loved ones. While we didn’t do that, we did reminisce. Christmas was always a hard time for me as a kid. My mother Irene, used to threaten to leave me alone, because I was s-s-s-s-o-o-o-o bad, from second to fourth grade, reducing me to hysterical tears as a kid. Then, I got hip to that, and told her to go in the fourth grade. My grandmother, Anna Bugajewski would also say that if I didn’t ‘behave’ I would “not have a grandmother”. They both died without me around, and both died a bit lonely, I think, although my mom and I had a nice phone call the day she died. Years later, it was one argument, after another during the Christmas season. So reach out this year, one and all, to those who may be dear to you, before it is too late. You may be surprised, that the person who you judge as not being interested, just may have been interested in a contact, after all. Just because the Post Office is raising the rates, doesn’t mean E mails are going up. Phone service seems cheaper than ever. We had the pyrohi, mushroom gravy, fish stix, and cole slaw. I skipped the borscht. I had too much of that as a kid, and BLECH. One of the gifts that Kathy gave me was a waterproof hair dryer. That makes no sense to me, as under the shower water, the hair is not going to get dry. I wonder what she was getting at, or thinking, when she bought me that? I was always told as a kid to play with my road race set in the bath. I can’t understand why people would want me to get my toys all wet? Part of Kathy’s gifts was dinner at Uncle Uli’s in Leavenworth, then back to our studio. They have the best HOT chicken wings, in east Washington. I know, I was stingy there, it was a gift that I liked, but she got other stuff. Anyway… Congrats to Mr. Yushenko. I feel sad about him, though, as I think they are literally going to kill this poor man. Call it an ‘Art Bell Prediction”. Very sad. Doesn’t the song, ‘BOH predvichny’ mean, GOD the ETERNAL is born? A very deep concept, bless HIM for all that HE gives us. Hope all of you did have a great Christmas, with those near and dear to you. If not, let them know you care today. Hey, anybody remember ‘Treasure Chest’ comix? I always thought that Chuck White was a putz. They still print them? Husker Du is blaring, “Could You Be The One”.

It's a NW Adventist tradition to send a news letter type greeting out at Xmas. So here is ours:

Karlsen Family

Silly S. Karlsen – Silly is now 4 years old. He is the best cat ever, and getting used to the indoor environment. He yelps when he is to be fed, and comes around when he wants to. Very independent, he is shyly friendly to strangers, proceeding to run and hide when company comes.

Kathy – Kathy has moved to Wenatchee, and is getting accustomed to the pace, and way of life in Wenatchee. A Minnesota girl, she realizes that many things that she has learned are different, especially when it comes to George. The man makes no sense, as he wants to stick to only one subject when he asks a question, and does NOT understand the Minnesota way of answering by questioning, giving examples that have maybe something to do with the issue, even should it be a situation from years ago. Kathy loves to tell jokes without the punch lines. Yet, she is a nice, easy going lass.

George – We are happy to report that the crème has helped George, he no longer itches, nor mutters to himself. He does know how to belch the melody to “Born To Be Wild”, using warm Coca Cola. He very rarely gets off the couch, while watching radio. However, he no longer gets lost in telephone booths anymore, so that is a start. He became happily married on 5 November 2004 / 21 Chesvan 5765 (Hebrew). Please pray for his wife, as anybody who would ever marry George, deserves a lot of help.

So from us to you, the Karlsens wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2005.

Bill - yeah bless Mrs. Steciw. Glad to hear she is ok. Hhhmm, am I jealous? You betcha'. I got some recipe for pierogies that the Mrs. is gong to make. Went out yesterday for the cole slaw, mushroom gravy and fish stix. The menu plan is going well. You remember the Xmas play in third grade, December 1966? I recall it being on a Sunday night. I had to stand there like a dope with a cut out Xmas tree. I happened to lQQk around, and boy did I hear about that. First from the grandmother to 7th St. Then back to Brookhaven from the mother. Then the next day Myron tears me a new one. All I heard about was "how I embarrassed all of THEM". I was always screwing up. My mom Irene, and the granny Anna Bugajewski, were definitely 'different', they never had a fun day. Everyone else's parents dug me, though, and it is good to know that yours were good. I remember your dad. I also remember those great ladies - Mrs. Halowchak, Mrs. Billy, Mrs. Kluka (2), Mrs. Kowalek, and the rest. The fantastic part was that all those ladies made the pyrohi by hand and every pyrohi was the same size. Have a great Xmas, and enjoy those special times, including the foods.

Hey George , you're right!...Sister Raphael and Mrs. Steciw were two really kind souls. I just saw Mrs. Steciw a couple of weeks ago at the church makin' pyrohi. When you walk into the basement to pick up your order, it's just like stepping back to 3rd grade. All of the folks from the Ukranian Hall Of Fame are still there making them all by hand. What a truly incredible aroma!!!Jealous yet? I wish you and yours a blessed Christmas.

Yo Bill. Yeah man, glad to hear you are ok, but so sorry about your parents. Man, that hits hard. You know, you can do that recipe easily. Unfortunately, when I was a kid, we never did the shrimps. I could eat a bucket full, back then. But, hope you are well this holiday season. I gve up tea and soups, as Yushenko had the bioxin's put in his serving. Not that anyone would want to do me in (line forms to the right). Have a great holiday Bill. I was too stubborn to eat the stewed fruits. Also, I was thinking about some special teachers, from HG. OF course, to me, Mrs. Ann Steciw was great. And of course, the beautiful Miss Virginia O'Donnell. Does anyone remember another nice one, who doesn't get mentioned much? I think her first name was Roberta - Mrs. Roberta Hoffman. She was tall, and a brunette. She taught there like 1969-1970. She was the type who never seemd to have a bad day, and nothing to her, in regards to teaching was some kind of 'soap opera'. She was straight on. Hope yer well Mrs. Hoffman. And then of course, the superb Sister Raphael. It's 7:58 AM here - somebody shoot some coffee in my veins, QUICK!

Yo George,I thought that we we're the only ones who had the mushroom gravy on the pyrohi. Every, Christmas Eve it was fresh fish, shrimp, pyrogi, mushroom gravy, and some kind of stewed fruits. I'm sure gonna miss that stuff. Both of my parents passed over the last 18 mos. But,,, I'll bet they're enjoying something better this year.

Hello Caroline, and the rest of the gang. All this talk of holiday foods has got me thinking, and "that’s a first", some will say. I was talking to my wife, and she said she would like to pursue some of these foods. She makes me an excellent holopchi, with Campbell's Tomato Soup sauce. So we thought, for Xmas Eve, we’re going to do some of those cool traditional things. So… our menu will consist of fish stix, ketchup, cole slaw and pyrohi. But, in the old days, I forgot the other pyrohi garnishing ingredient – mushroom gravy. Yeah, used to have the Xmas Eve pyrohi fried brown, served with mushroom gravy (Franco American). So, that is the menu. I was also thinking of some of the traditions that were not so pleasant. My mom and her friend Marie would stand outside, after mass, and talk about how Stella’s clothing wasn’t good, this and that. Then my mom would turn around with her friend Stella, and talk about Marie’s bad taste in clothing. I asked my mom if she ever thought Stella and Marie ever got together and talked about the gossipy stuff towards her? THey did, and an interesting thought, eh? Neither Stella nor Marie went to my mom’s funeral. This holiday season, and hopefully all year, we should perhaps think about not tearing/dragging people down for no reason. I can handle it. After all, I ‘died, got locked away, turned my back on my ex wife, had a different girlfriend, haircut, and am going to mass’. Not really, sorry to disappoint. There is too much of that in this world. Heck the Ukie President elect is finally having his poisoning reported in the mainstream media. So, I hope this Xmas season, and as we leave Chanukah, people just chill out and enjoy those cool small and fun things. As for me, ‘pass the Coke bottle Santa, some Winstons, and some of those Mrs. Paul’s Fish Stix”. Inner Circle is blaring the original C.O.P.S. theme, “Bad Boys”. Gotta’ go. They came for me already, and all is well. Merry Kringle to one and all. What time does the party start?

Caroline: Now it is you that brings back the memory. Potato pancakes - yum! I am laughing because, you mean there is someone else like me who puts ketchup on the platski's? Actually, I eat ketchup on everything except hot dogs. I got literally yelled at in 1990 when my mom died. After her funeral, I went to HG and ordred about 4 dozen pyrohi. Right, so this older bobchi starts chatting me up, and I tell her that I like them with ketchup, or garic powder and spaghetti sauce. Well this lady starts chewing me out, almost poppinbg veins in her neck holloring, "yew no do it dat". Man! This site is fun, and yeah, it does bring back those fun childhood memories. I had a weird, yet fun family life. I lived in Brookhaven, but went to Chester enough, opting for Beach Haven. NJ. I like the SE PA area, although I probably will never see that again. There is a quote, "you got your dreams and memories, and they can't put that over on ya (take it away from you)". How true. And thanks for all your work on these pages. I figure, if we can't have fun, then it ain't worth it. By the way, the song for today blaring in the back of the studio is "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys. Great video, dumb lyrics, and yet great fuzzy guitar bass & drums. GOD love Brooklynites also. Have a great day.

George:

I am happy that my memories brought back childhood times for you. You brought one back to me when you mentioned the "fish sticks" One of my kids did not eat fish except for Mrs. Pauls and we would have to have frozen fish also and with Catsup. Catsup on everything when I grew up. My Husband to this day, shakes his head when I make Platski/Latkes. and eat them with catsup. Sour Cream or applesauce on the side is suppose to be the right way..not for me.

We are glad you enjoy visiting all the pages here on oldchester. Preserving the history of this home town is rewarding when we see how much someone living at a distance enjoys the site.

I did not post an answer on the event page as that area is for recollections, and I did not want to get a exchange of posts going there.

Yeah, well I guess that joke didn’t go over too well. I am sure someone is saying, “why would Mr. CZJWIXNOSTACZ’s name be on an eye chart”? Or, “that joke doesn’t make sense, cause Mr. CZJWIXNOSTACZ wouldn’t allow his name to be on an eye chart. Karlsen just doesn’t make any sense”. Oh never mind, that isn’t the point. Chanukah starts tonight, and begins the Feast of Dedication (Festival of Lights). This is an 8 day celebration of the beginning of a month that calls to mind our GOD. Man, hard to believe Xmas is only 18 days away. Remember this time of year at HG School? Even Myron seemed a bit festive. Okay, so she still could make Hitler cry, but she got into the season in her own way, I guess. Anybody remember Father Jim Poorman walking around in 1970-71 with his little small transistor radio, just hanging out, and being cool? St, Nicholas Day just passed, and well, yeah there is the memory of Fr. P Lypyn, in the garb, having a blast. I miss Wanamaker’s Xmas show. Enough of that, as I do wish everyone the best holiday season this year. I got to go, cause the first Body Count CD is playing – ‘there goes the neighbourhood’.

I found this one:

A Ukranian immigrant goes to the DMV to apply for a driver's license. He has to take an eye sight test. The examiner shows him a card with the letters

C Z J W I X N O S T A C Z

"Can you read this?" the examiner asks.

"Read it?" the Ukie guy replies, "I know the guy."

Of course, he could have been a Norwegian. Ya never know, or maybe a half breed.

Talks broke down in a truce for the Ukranian election results. It's getting very bad there.

You also Laryssa. We should be grateful. Ukraine is almost in a state of 'civil war'. This whole thing sounds like it is stirred up from the outside, check BBC news, or your CBC news pages. Happy Thanksgiving? It ain't over yet! Remember St. Nick Day? Father Lypyn would dress up, and the boys always got a charcoal, and THEN the candy. One year, no lie, my mother cried (I think 4th grade) about Lypyn giving me coal, and I was a "disgrace to my dad's mom, what would she think, etc."? Ain't that crazy? See, that is the problem with the world, they should lighten up, but Nnnnoooo..., everything has to be so serious, and let's try to jerk the other guy around, at his expense, for our benefit. This happened a LOT in my HG days (and perhaps now at HG?) at home, and it is happening now in the Ukraine. Mellow out, and check out Pere Ubu. They sound like Chuck Berry meets Red Crayola.

This holiday brings back many happy childhood memories and it's great to carry on the tradition. Even though here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving on October 11th, I also make a turkey meal for my family today. All the best!

Maureen - it seems that things have come all at once in your family. Sadly enough, near this Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you are all well, and thankful for the lives they did share with you. Remember the fun times. Today near Wenatchee, two people were killed in a horrible accident on the road, coming into town from HWY 2. It hits home on the holidays. Remember the old days of the Wednesday before Thankisgiving @ HG? The excitement of four days away from 'schkolada', or however ya say it? Must be interesting in the Ukraine now - 47 million people, almost in revolt, with a strange election result. News on BBC claims the government has already lost control of Kiev and the west Ukraine. Keep GOD in mind this great season, one and all - it aint about sports. Got Dave Edmunds on in the back - "Playing with the queen of hearts", yeah man!

I was digging through a few bazillion bytes of e-mail and other stuff on my hard drive, and ran across a URL I'd forgotten.

A friend in Germany put a couple photos of me up on his Web site for Suzuki Savage riders. Click on the pix to make them bigger:

http://www.heise-workstations.de/ls650/Besitzer/MGale-Sinex-e.html

Both were taken five years ago, one in summer, one in winter. Except for a change in glasses, I still look like this. Maybe a little paler, living here in the fog. :^)

My husband took the motorcycle photo. You can see him, here, showing the Dalai Lama his 3D tattoo:

I didn't go on that trip (I was farming in Wisconsin), but one thing we do in our community is build Web sites and telcom networks for small organizations that can't afford them at market rates.

Just a word to you Class-of-Seventysomethings about Lynda Whalen's miniskirts, previously mentioned here.

Part of that was that she was growing like a weed in her teens, from HG on, and ended up something like 5'10". A gorgeous young woman, and tough, and bright. We got to be friends in high school.

After HG she went to Padua (as did I). In about a year, her middle-of-the-knee hem was an inch above the knee. We all kept the same old uniforms thru all four years; it was the only way to get around the ugly-long hem thing; if our mothers agreed to cut the extra goods off the hem in freshman year, our skirts couldn't be lengthened, so you kept your freshman uniform skirt. So by graduation, Lynda had about three feet of leg showing under the hem. The nuns at Padua went nuts (and the priests too, for different reasons). And she didn't have the shortest hem, either. (I'm laughing to remember.)

She was a terrific person; not sure where she is, and would love to know. One of my enduring memories was that she had an after-school job in high school driving a shuttle for some hotel in Airport Circle. She was all of 17; I can't recall how she talked her way into that job with a Cinderella license. Even though I was already working as a journalist, I was impressed by her savoir faire in her job. Dealing, as she said, with Those Businessmen.

Another enduring memory of her was also from Padua, rather than HG--the day she told the Geometry Nun to "kiss her kazoo."

Home rooms at Padua were organized by alphabetical order. Our freshman homeroom went from the letter R to Z. In freshman year, we in R-to-Z got a reputation from a particular wacky teacher, who designated a certain group of us as "You Esses and Double-yous." The Ss and Ws kind of hung together from then on, living up to our reputation.

Of course I, as an S, was completely innocent of any mischief.

Hi George,

Good to hear from you. So you are in Washington now. What brings you to the other coast?

I lived in Seattle for a couple of months in 1996 and in Moscow, Idaho (near Pullman) for about a year before.

So, it looks like a few nice Chester, Pa. hoagies for the wedding on the 5th. Thanks again to the Editor. Nothing new and exciting this weekend, eh? The old days are gone - gasoline is going up to $2,29 here. I use mass transit - much better. Along with being a clown, I like the unusual. Check this out, found in Texas: http://www.unknowncountry.com/img/news/102004/critter-1.jpg DNA, or genetic research on animals? Are humans far behind? Yeah Catherine, yer right, we better pray. Sad thing abut us growing up - we learn some strange things. Have a great week. "My Love Will Not Change" - Del Mc Coury Band.

Ann - Pyrohi of stuffed cabbage, boy, it's ALL good. SO I take it the pyrohi is not sold every week? Sad, and well appreciated, I am sure. There I go on the food again. Okay, so I miss it. I went to wawa.com and inquired about hoagies, and well, they don't ship. ANybody know of a place that does, FED EX?* Well, not much else, the world goes on and on crazily, I guess I am 'certifyable', but I considered the alternative (growing up) and thought, "nope, that ain't for me". Anybody remember the Ukranian teacher Mr. Poke (<<-- sp.?) in 1964? He said that someday I would be president, or a lawyer, or a doctor, yadda yakkity yammer... I rebelled, cause I got tired of hearing that. Enjoy those pyrohi. I got ketchup and hot sauce, at least. SOng for the day, "What Do I Get"? by the Buzzcocks. Or "Automatic" by Prince, I ain't sure. Okay, so I hear an interesting news article this past weekend. Seems some dude was on a cabbage and bean diet. He ate nothing but cabbage and beans. Turns out he built up a LOT of methane gas in his system, and then ended up dying in bed. The gas came out of his body while he was alive (wonder how?) and dead, making a huge cloud that got two of the rescue workers hospitalized. Them vegetarians are wrong - eat meat! Vegetables CAN and DO kill! See, I figure if he ate some wonderful holopchi, this would have never happened. I got to admit - Slovack cooks are some of the best. Mrs. Billy was a saint in the HG Kitchen. Do I always think about food? Usually when I am awake, yeah. Food and girls rock.

Catherine - I do like your zeal. I dunno, these are interesting times. Can someone explain to me why the Libertarian candidate, Micheal Badnarik was arrested trying to serve papers at the debate last week, while atempting to face Bush & Kerry? Seems Bush & Kerry are afraid, to say the least, when presented with truth. Back when we were kids, we did sleep nicely with Mr. Nixon at the helm. Those were really halycon days. It looked like fun at the oldchester dot com reunion. Salvation Army does excellent work, keep them in prayer. Other than that, nothing much. A lady stopped by our house yesterday asking to use the phone. She said her keys were locked in the car, about 4 blocks away (I didn't ask). I heard her get angry at the police dispatch, because it would take them a half hour to come out. She pleaded, "you have to hurry, it looks like rain, and I have to put my convertible top up". Now notice, I did NOT mention hair colour, or nationality. And how was your day? Vote Alfred E Neumann for president - 'what me worry'?

Okay, so my day is winding up, like a yo-yo trick in a phone booth. Yesterday was Thanksgiving in Canada. I had my turkey early, as I don't do the Hallow Eve thing. I remember a lot of the Thanksgiving's of past. Best was in '67 @ the NJ shore. Anyway, I have a LOT to be thankful for this year. I know, I know, we ain't Canadians. But shouldn't we be thankful every day? Yeah man. HG never had the Thanksgiving dinners, did they? Too bad, as those ladies knew how to cook. Anyway, easy skanking away. I hope oldchesterpa has the 'fave Thanksgiving' page again. I am still waiting for the Linton's photo. Cool stuff. Take it slow, as it feels better.

Actually, maybe I am a bit tuff on Ukie's. I am a half breed, the other being Norwegian. Well, I have a go at the Norsemen, especially when I was in Norway many times. But Norwegian jokes ain't fun on a Ukranian web page, now are they? Not all Uke's are bad. One that comes to mind is my grat Uncle Steve Pondok. He died on 28 Feb. 1972. He seemed to be everyone's Uncle Steve, except to his great wife and super two daughters where he was a loving hubby & dad. Uncle Steve used to give me a playful '6 incher' to the arm. He would take his fist and go about 6 inches and give me a (tap) hit. Uncle Steve then gave me a half dollar many times for that. This was fun. I made about $2,50 one day with him, LOL. He also was a very hard worker for HG, and towards others. I never forgot him - a tuff ex Navy guy. I bet he could have made Bogart & Brando cringe, Steve Pondok was cool. So may his memory be eternal. Otherwise, we got to laugh at ourselves, cause again, someone else may be snickering anyway. Time to put on 'New Rose' by the Damned - "I can't stop to mess around, gotta' brand new rose in town". My stereo at the station here don't go to '11+', bummer.

LOL and hello Caroline - on the 'famous' and 'inventors'. Uhm, the empty book was a 'play' about inventions. I wear these shades because a.) I am light sensitive b.) I can't see without them. Yeah both the English Beat & Todd's 'Something/Anything' are both, well.... yeah! Kinda' amazing how those songs take us back to some wonderful, and weird times. It's like the Delfonics, and Climax - "Precious & Few", and "Without You' by Nilsson. ALL from HG days. I eat that stuff up. Then geesh, I move out west and I get into blue grass and real country. Yea-hah, and shalom y'all. That sounds funny with my bad englitch / SE Pa. dialect, to these folks. Keep a having fun.

Yeah man. Last night we are sitting around listening to the second CD of Todd Rundgren ‘Something / Anything’. He was a Philly dude, who did ‘I Saw The Light / Hello It’s Me’, and I had one of those flashbacks to the day. It’s late 60’s, and the Phillies are playing the Cubs on Channel 6. That was before WPHL. Jim Bunning was pitching, and Cookie Rojas on shortstop. Ballantine Beer was the sponsor. Richie Ashburn and By Saam are announcing. Well, the Phillies won. The reason I bring up Leavenworth, WA. is that there is a lady who works up at KOHO FM. She is from Philly. She also worked at WFIL radio and TV back then. She knew Doctor Don, George Michael, Jackie Mullen, all them guys. Those were the ‘Philly Broadcast Pioneers’. Todd Rundgren did some great Philly Soul music, along with some dynamite rock n roll with The Nazz – ‘Open My Eyes’. “Why does the guitar sound funny dad”, I ask? “Those are called ‘phasers’”. KEWEL! Time for another coffee.

So, I am in the 'Book For All Seasons' store, and see a book wrapped in plastic - "Interesting Inventions of Ukranans". I don't want to wing the $6,98 retail, so I pilfer (shop lift) it. I get it home and man, would I have got cheated!!! There was NOTHING written on the pages, they were ALL blank!!! Then it dawned on me why... So at least I got some nice writing paper. Today is the English Beat - "Mirror In The Bathroom, Hands Off She's Mine", etc. First 'new wave ( I hate that term) to be recorded digitally. I was thinking about all those 'fun' days of yesteryear. How I used to go to church, and then go to Grandmom's house. They would argue, fight, this and that. Then they would all cry about how Uncle Mike (I liked him) was wrong & bad. So one day we are going back to Brookhaven, after a session at granny's. Ever go through Bridgewater Road, and on that narrow bridge into Brookhaven? I see this sign "Ukranians At Work". So, I am already in hysterics. I see a bunch of guys going into the water with shovels, and coming out after 30 or so seconds with bits of dirt in the shovel heads. "What are you doing"?, I ask. "We kannet no raiset bridge, so vee lover duh vater". Oh my... I hope a steamship never got lost down that creek. Despite it all, I had a fun life, does it show? I think in this time of passing for Vera Leary, the family should think back to those fun memories. My dad died 28 years ago on the 22nd of September. I sat around and smiled that day, at all the joy that he did bring. My mom once said, "GOD made you a Ukranian Catholic". I thought, "But dad is a Lutheran". I know some people may have wanted to trade me to the Lutherans back then, but that didn't happen. Although, they did have cool choir robes. So remember those fun memories. And snicker at the bad ones, as - they are over, aren't they? Have a great one, one and all. Uh oh, I snuck in "Blue" by LeAnn Rimes. KEWEL!

The bartender eyes them suspiciously and asks, "Hey, what is this?? Some kind of joke"??? (get it?) This is a great page, and I am still relaxed. Q: How do you tell a groom at a Ukie wedding? A: He is wearing the clean bowling shirt. My grandmom never understood that one. She got thrown off also - as there is no letter "e" between the "w" and "l" in bowling. I won't be wearing a bowling shirt at mine, though. Oh well, time for some coffee and a bit of Winston and then off we go. Have a great and fun day - seriously.

Well hello Ukie’s, guess who is back on the web page? I bet ya can’t, even though you’re reading the name and header above. Yup, after a long absence and health and legal problems, I finally had to lQQk @ this page, breaking my promise. Boy, do I cause controversy, or what? Just like the old days, going to mass, and then hanging around outside (wanting to go HOME) while the other folks just slagged off everyone else. This, after honouring GOD? Cool, eh? Well, I dunno who gave out my web page, but there ya go. Yeah, I am friendly with my ex wife, and my son. I don’t go out with my Hawaiian ex, as that was last year, when I met my present Kathy in October. Keep watching the web page, as she was baptized in the river yesterday, and we shall marry in December. That will give you something to do, I am sure. Don’t forget to get your nasty comments in. How dare someone ever be happy, right? After all, nothing but negative miserable things were discussed at Holy Ghost, after church, during school, when I was there. LQQk @ this page, no e mail addies, nothing…. Are you ashamed of your names? DCH or Donna – you just keep playing. A co-worker at Scott’s and most people have no idea who or what you are on about. If yer real, did you ever wonder why I wasn’t interested in you? Of course, I am doing fine. Yup, I am a walking miracle, much to some of your dismay. I do have CHF and 5 blockages, and I really shouldn’t be here, but… sorry to disappoint some of you. And yeah, I am a radio station manager, and technician. That pays a LOT better than some of you folks may be making, sorry to say. After all, the only way we Holy Ghost people measure success is by the dollar amount in the bulletins. Don’t ever go by someone’s character. So there ya go. Thanks for wondering. Yeah, believe it or not, I do miss some of you who I did meet personally in the school years. Sorry about Myron and Duchak. I would like to sing them the Toby Keith song, “How Do You Like Me Now?” You can check out that video song on http://www.cmt.com under artist, then to Toby Keith. Keep a doing whatever is going on. Thanks for the tip on the nonsense going on about me. But, sad to say, it ain’t real. Shalom y’all!

Effective September 1, 2004, Archbishop Stefan Soroka announced the changes which are summarized in the August 15, 2004 The WAY.

Reverend John Ciurpita is assigned as Pastor of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chester, PA and Parish Administrator of Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Clifton Heights, PA.

Reverend Vasil Bunik is assigned as Parish Administrator of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Warrington, PA and Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lansdale, PA.

We wish them many blessings in their new assignments.

It's sad to read about the parish closings in Philly, South Philly, and Nanticoke.

Are any of the Matys Brothers still living? One played the violin like an angel as I remember being told. They lived at 3031 W. 3rd Street just down from Booth toward Holy Ghost. I ask because we have a photo of a ball team on this site and some of the team members are said to be from the South Chester area. Perhaps they would recogonize the young faces of these men and one woman in the photo. Would love to put some of the bands photos on this site. They were a part of Chester history. If any are living and have a email address will you send me it on mine. I would appreciate it greatly and would email a pix of the ballplayers over to them. The players would be in the mid 80's and older now if they were living.

I was the eighth grade teacher at Holy Ghosts. I think it was 1988. It was my first year teaching and was a wonderful learning experience. I remember how beautiful the church looked the first time I saw it. Different than what I was used to. The principal that year, Christine Paluch, and all my students laughed every time I blessed myself "backwards" from what everyone else it church was doing. (I'm Roman Catholic) I have a class picture and a picture of the kids dressed up for a Nativity play somewhere. I'll dig it out. I have only ever run into two former students. Todd (senior moment, I can't remember his last name) and Kevin Paden who is now a Chester City cop. My aunt and uncle had a store near that neighbor a long time ago. Near 3rd and Booth, I think. Their name was Leary, too. My aunt is Vera Matys and sang with the Matys Brothers. I can't remember the pastors name at the time (Myron? Byron?) but I remember he had a cranky little black dog and the kids used to tell me that the dog's name was Satan. I only could stay one year, but that was a memorable one. "Ms. Leary" now but then I was Mrs. Behmke

Yes, I agree, Donna, stop playing this here. George has left his e mail addresses many times, as I have read the archives. You say you work in a job with clients, and now you are having computer problems, and this and that? Don't you have a computer at home? It doesn't make sense. You practically invite yourself to travel with him, if he has money, and now, you have lost touch. I don't think you ever had contact with George. He was / is a funny man. I liked him when I was in school, who wouldn't? Again though, keep our Blessed Mother in prayer, as this seems to be a very dangerous time. I enjoy the Fatima Vision, and wonder, if there was anything given about the United States? Holy Mary did say that she would take Russia back, and now our Ukraine has been free, for many years. Who remembers the Church picnic held at Maleckyj's farm off the Conchester Highway? I rode the ponies, swam in the pond, danced polkas to the Malynowski's band, and ate perogies and holupchi all day long. It was the best time. I even remember waiting in line to use the out house! What fun and innocent good times. Is the pond still there? They had the most wonderful grounds for a Church picnic. I smile whenever I think of those days.

Are you interested in helping. If so scroll down and send me your name, address, telephone number. So I may contact you directly.

I do check all school pages to avoid posts that are of no interest or value to the site as a whole.

What makes the school page interesting for people is they may make contact with people they have not seen or heard from in years. by exchanging email addresses you can keep a connection and up to date on their news.

NOW...on to other business --- Bob Filix -- I was advised that a BF was searching for their St. James Class Ring. If that is you do you want to post it? As to year, engravings, etc?

It is important that this webpage focus's on memories of general interest and current events at the church & school. This page cost the webmaster to keep it running, so please don't waste the space.

The manner in which it has been going lately is not an acceptable direction that represents the memories of a Religious Institution. Whether you post with a name or without is not important. What is important is the quality that this page gives toward this entire site. Share your school day memories, but please respect this site.

Am keeping very busy..hopefully all will slow down in or around the fall and I can get back to doing work here at oldchesterpa.. I'm jocking back and forth between NJ, DE, MD, and PA with work..

Would love to see some of the good people from Holy Ghost come to the Reunion on October 2. I am trying to reschedule a trip that has been planned for the past year so that I can again attend.

I am still interested in speaking to Father and organizing the photos that he has in the boxes. I have several volunteers coming back from their summer homes in the fall who have said they would help in any activity that would help preserve Chesters history. None ever lived in Chester but found the site a wealth of information.

Enjoy the rest of the week. Keep safe, healthy and happy.

We may be looking for volunteers that can key in information in the fall for other projects. Maybe some of the locals will sign up when we get it all together and post for HELP!

Now you see I assume that the last post was aimed at me. If so, next time your church schedules a food fest sale (especially the cabbage soup-who has that recipe) it is sooooooooo goooooooooood. let me know.

Sorry I can only tell you about what I can remember as a small child . It may not have been the house of Mr. & Mrs. Carman that put the greens on their step and over their door, but my memory keeps telling me that that's where I first saw it. Maybe I'm wrong.

Because I am no Biblical scholar I could not tell you where in the Bible or if in the Bible - Only what stayed in my mind since I was about 7 years old .. At that time Holy Ghost was still I believe Byzantine.

so I went to the little glass box in front of me and did a search. these sites are informative.. Very interesting reading. I learned alot from all three. thanks for the question.

Also I meant to start a paragraph where I had the mention of the May Alter. Also forgot that we put a small votive candle there also.

Where is this in the Bible? Interesting!

We of course knew Pentecost but I never remember celebrating with the tree branches. They would adorn entrance and interior with greenery. and of course I went home and did the same. To this day keep greens at my door, but in a living green. This tradition goes way back to the Old Testament. when homes and synagogues dressed with tree branches and flowers representing that the world was all a bloom when the Law of God was given at Mt.Sinai. The Blessed Mother placed on a corner table and a make shift kneeler there for us.

Yes, Beautiful Christine worked at 3rd street as a young girl along with Mr. Carman. A amazing business woman even as a girl. Way before her time. How one memory brings back floods.

I can remember a pastry that Mrs. Carman made. It was pinkish in color and I believe Christine called it a "pynki" (SP)..they were so good. It was the size of a chocolate chip ahoy cookie, flat, but made with egg whites. I guess we would call them Meranges today.

If this old memory of mine serves me right, I thing mr. & Mrs. Carmen first introduced me to a Tradition they practiced known as Green Sunday. We of course knew Pentecost but I never remember celebrating with the tree branches. They would adorn entrance and interior with greenery. and of course I went home and did the same. To this day keep greens at my door, but in a living green.

This tradition goes way back to the Old Testament. when homes and synagogues dressed with tree branches and flowers representing that the world was all a bloom when the Law of God was given at Mt.Sinai. . Now how many of you had May Altars at home. I can remember ours being near the front door. The Blessed Mother placed on a corner table and a make shift kneeler there for us. I also called this tradition into my children's lives, but see that they did not carry it into the lives of my grandkids.

OK - Holy Ghost School - 1st Grade class - Year would have been 1970? Sister Ignatius. Think.

Am I imagining things, or did we all have numbers assigned to us? There were so many students that year, we were called by number, instead of name - at least until Nov.

I was #38. Considering I am "K" in the alphabet, there must have been more than 50 of us!

Amazing there were that many kids in that neighborhood then, and the school is no longer in existance. I also think Holy Ghost's "legendary" discipline added to the enrollment from outside the immediate Ukr. neighborhood.

If you are out there, how many of you remember what # you were?

Also - Lots of fond memories of the school trips in later years.

Mind boggling that Sister Myron ventured with us to Florida on a bus when I was in (I think) 5th grade! I remember visiting the national Catholic shrine in DC on the way. Then the vist to St Augustine fulfilled the "official" educational req's of the trip, before going to DisneyWorld and Daytona Beach. Then we went to FL again in 8th grade, but that time on Amtrak. Whoa! Did the Metroliner actually stop to get us at Highland Ave?

What is truly amazing is how much more difficult trips like that would be to organize today - safety / liabilty concerns, etc. For all the complaining we do about the nuns, you have to hand it to them - they pulled off some pretty ambitious stuff when it came to travelling with the kids.

If you can remember any of this, I gots lots more!

David Komonosky

P.S. Thanks for all the kind thoughts regarding the passing of my mom Mary this past January. She was a big booster of all things Holy Ghost.

Fathers photo at the Blessing of the Graves two years ago. This graveside Blessing is so beautiful. You have a choice of English or in Song. Always song. Listening is like stepping back into time. That this church still brings tradition into today is something all those of you that have gone to Holy Ghost should be proud about. I am sure many of you can add your memories of going to the cemetery to wait for the Blessing.

Some of my favorite memories are of going to the fair at the hall on 2nd and Thurlow. Often riding into Chester on the bus to come. It always seemed like such a giant area and sooooo many games of chance to have fun on. Although not members of the parish, my Mom worked for weeks making fashion dolls with satin ribbon gowns for prizes. Funny how we never kept one or took pictures of them. Sad now that I thing of it and remember her sewing each layer of ribbon with a needle and thread not a machine so that each stitch when pulled to make soft pleats would be just where she wanted them. Then sewing little flowers and beads around them. I can remember how popular that game was with the girls, everyone wanted one. I haven't thought of them for years.

I remember one year they had a duck that was raffled off. Some lucky boy visiting went home to the suburbs with it.

This page is a great way to share such memories. Those of you that lived there and went to church and school at Holy Ghost must have volumns stored in your memory, waiting to be awakened.

Anyway, this is the link with Fathers picture.

Dear Caroline, What a wonderful lady you are! I'm sure Father Bunik will be thrilled perhaps you can show him the website and if he is not busy he may enjoy it as well. He had many photographs of school children and teachers as well as special occasions. They are not organized but I did speak with Mr Szpir whose father was a priest a long time ago and he was trying to get a scan of one of his father's portraits, I did get in touch with him in regards to that but our scheduled did not allow us to get together but Father was most pleasant. Thank you for all your hard work, I've enjoyed your postings as well as the photo's you have taken in the past.

I am tied up this week, but should be able to contact Father shortly. I will do so and will see what I believe will be of interest to all and add a cherished history in photos and text. By the way, I can remember the little wooden church across from where your parish now stands. Wouldn't it be awesome to find a picture of it among the ones you speak of. Hopefully there will be photos of students and activities and names along with them. Year Books, Annv. Books and files. I will see if Father can loan them for a little while. Depending on the quantity it does take time to organize and document.

Yes, I am that Caroline, and your committee people still make the closest cabbage soup to that of my Mom. Moms was a bit different and called other than cabbage soup. No the less, it was really good. Never had to learn to make it while Mom was alive, as with most Ukrainian Moms, when she cooked she cooked for all. Now that my mother is no longer with us, it was a taste of memory that I enjoyed very much. I will be contacting Father in regard to the Blessing of the Graves which is this month. Usually the week of Memorial Day weekend or the weekend before. It would be a privilege for me to document the Church History for the site.

I do scan and burn to CD for a backup file.

Bob: # 8 looks like a girl from 7th street. Not sure but she sure looks like a gal named Lucetta Gruler (SP?) .. the face is similar to what I remember as a 10 year old. although she would be more my age which is 63. Does that name ring a bell.

Bob F. has shared a Communion photo with this site. It is in the Whats New section. The year is 1950. Can anyone name any of the people. If so please send John Bullock the names. It seems I remember the face of two people. First row boy #3 looks like John Kowal (SP) and 2nd row girl #10 looks like Gloria Manchin or one of the Manchin girls. If anyone can second the faces I will send john the names. It is a beautiful photo. Bob thank you for sharing.

I remember serving the Easter sunrise mass in 1974.The procession around the outside of the church at that time of the morning was pretty cool. I forget the name of the guy who was the cantor, but he had a great voice. Great memories from those days!

That isn't funny to "you-keys", but consider this: Did you hear how the Ukranian man died from a heart attack? Yes, it is true! While his wife was trying to dial 911, she became lost and confused while trying to find the number eleven on the telephone.

Voistinu Voskres,Jennifer! My family and I also went to Plaschanitchya yesterday afternoon. I remember being in the sodality and going to sunrise Mass. We used to complain as kids about getting up so early in the morning, but it really wasn't so bad. It was just once a year. To answer your question, my boys used the kistka stick and bees wax to make the pysanky and they also dyed eggs with food coloring to make krashanky too. It was great to share our memories about Easter traditions and Holy Ghost Church. Take care!

We all went to Plastanitchya today from 3 - 4 p.m. I remember when the altar boys and sodality girls had to stay until someone relieved them. Also early sunrise mass on Easter Sunday and those clickers!

Larrysa, great memories thanks for sharing them, do the boys really use bees wax and a needle or color them with food coloring? Thanks for sharing enjoy Christos Boskress!

My family and I wish all of you a happy and blessed Easter. Our 9 and 11 year old sons have been making pysanky at school this week and will color more eggs tomorrow, as I prepare the babka bread, ham, kolbassa, cheese, red beet and horseradish dishes. Then my husband and I will take them to church for the blessing of the Easter baskets, which they enjoy. It brings back many happy memories of the blessing of the baskets at Holy Ghost, which I attended with my parents and brother. Enjoy your sviachene!

Hello to all

My message is for George K and any one that may remember me by name. I could be mistaken but I am sure I remember you George. I was in class with you 5th 6th and 7th grade. I have many memories of Holy Ghost but the one I remember the most was a party in your basement. I remember this night like it was yesterday because of the girl I was with. She had long blond hair and lived near St hedwig church. I guess you could say she was my girl friend for a while. The memories I have of this girl will stay with me forever. This was back when it was enough to just hold hands and If we were lucky we may kiss a little. In those days, I can remember thinking about nothing else. I remember her name but I did not want to post it here. I thought I would keep everyone guessing. Currently I am remarried to a Romanian girl. I have 2 adult children Boy 21 and Girl 25. I an not that old I just got started early. I also have a 1 year old grandson. Well I want to save some room for someone else.

I will write soon if someone responds to this message.

Subject: Over 35 People over 35 should be dead. Here's why ............ According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's, or even maybe the early 70's probably shouldn't have survived. Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, ... and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.) As children, we would ride in cars with no seatbelts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors! We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. NO CELL PHONES!!!!! Unthinkable! We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them. We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside us forever. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors! Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them! Congratulations!

I remember Diane Hawrylak, Patricia O'Konski, Helen Beyba, Carol Tatusko, Claudia Roberts, Joe Clarke, Michael Kupchick,as well as other friends-Orest Zbyr,Mary Hladasz,Olha Kluka, Kathy Petryk. I miss Holy Ghost and Chester. For many years my mother and brother came up to Canada to visit us, so we haven't been to see our church for awhile. Though my husband and I are planning to visit them in July, and hope to show our church to our two sons, Aleksander and Christian. My boys enjoy hearing stories about wonderful Fathers Zbyr and Sagan, our fun 8th grade trip to the Montreal Expo, as well as the wild and crazy antics of Sister Myron! I hope life has been good to all of you and would be happy to hear from anyone, who remembers me. Take care!

Graduated from Holy Ghost in 1972. (My sister Debbie graduated form there in 1971) I was there for 2 years and that is all it took to know Mother Myron. She was so mean. she had no business being with children. I saw her hitting on allot of kids and especially one of the guys (David) he would fight back too. (that was the best part) There was a very nice nun there too, can't remember her name. she was a frail looking person and Mother Myron picked on her allot too.

Hello again to all the Holy Ghost alumni. My father was Rev. Nicholas Zbyr who passed away February 2nd, 1968, while pastoring at St. Nicholas on 24th Street in Philadelphia. I would have graduated with the class of 1966 had I still been in Chester. I remember the names of a few people, Joe Komanowsky, Marilyn Pondok, Peter Okonski to name a few. Any other members of the 1966 class out there? I remember the school construction which ended in 1962 since my father was still pastor there. I never got a chance to go there since he was transferred to Philadelphia in September 1962, just when the new school opened. There used to be a big portrait of my father in the school auditorium. I wonder what happened to it. Does anybody know? Please e-mail back - it would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me or has any other information. I am currently living in Bucks County PA, married for 28 years to a lovely Ukrainian woman, and have 2 children aged 26 and 20. I work at AstraZeneca, a Wilmington DE based pharmaceutical company where I have been for 20 years. Take care everyone!

Today I had the rare pleasure to revisit Holy Ghost Church. It had been years since I have been in the church. It is still as beautiful,if not more so, than I remembered. The CCD committee was having Holubuchi and cabbage soup sale. This inspired the trip into Chester. All I can say to those that did not get there today (Saturday) try tomorrow. The UKRAINIAN KITCHEN at Holy Ghost still lives.

The cabbage soup took me back to when my Mom was alive. I came there expecting Christmas Kapusta, but had a soup very similar to one Mom made, hers with a few other ingredients. Having tasted the soup...uumm uumm good will never compare.

To the committee thank you for being so kind and allowing me to take a picture or three while you were all so busy. and I expect tired.. again thank you.

[Editor's note: Caroline has shared pictures that are posted here. Be sure to also check the new pictures she has taken of the altar and nativity on our main Holy Ghost church page.]

In trying to document events for the OLDCHESTERPA site with the camera, I try to remember some of the things that I saw as a child or still attend now as a "old" :) woman when in the area or when possible. I hope these pictures bring happy memories to all that see them and will awaken moments of Love within your lives.

John has added a picture of Holy Ghost priest and the Blessing of the graves. Go to the menu -- it is in the cemetery listing - scroll to Immaculate Heart of Mary. In this photo the Blessing is being sung. I have it on short video, but cannot get it to open for this site. The Blessings of the graves are a beautiful and wonderful tradition of faith that your parish still keeps alive. Your religious traditions should be cherished.

Pierogies

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg

Sift flour, baking powder, add egg and water to make a soft dough. Turn on lightly floured board and knead gently five (5) minutes. Allow to stand about ten (10) minutes before rolling. Roll dough very thin, cut in two-inch squares. Place a teaspoon of filling in center and fold the corners, seal edges well by pinching. Bake on a greased cookie sheet, scalded with melted butter and fried onions.

Potato filling:

Mash four medium cooked potatoes, salt and add two ounces sharp cheese. Combine ingredients.

Here is the stuffed cabbage I made last night.

1 1/2 pounds lean hamburger 1/4 pound long-grain rice 2 cans tomatoes, canned -- 16 oz cans 1 jar sauerkraut -- rinsed (large jar) 3/4 pound beef sausage -- cut 2" pieces 5/8 large onions -- chopped 5/8 cup water salt -- to taste pepper -- to taste garlic powder -- to taste 1 head cabbage -- parboiled 1 green bell pepper -- parboiled 1. Parboil the cabbage, cutting off leafs as they soften. They should not be overcooked. It is a little hard to judge how many heads of cabbage to buy, depends on size of head. 2. Pare the core of the cabbage so leafs are easy to roll. 3. Place sauerkraut in bottom of large roasting pan. 4. Combine hamburger, onions, rice, water, and seasonings. Mixture should be mushy (this gives the rice liquid to absorb and prevents cabbage rolls from getting hard. 5. Lay a cabbage leaf in your hand with the core closest to your wrist. Place a portion of meat on the leaf on the back half of the leaf (over the core). Fold the right edge to the middle and roll the top edge to form an oblong cabbage roll. Tuck the right edge in to secure the roll. Using this method, no toothpicks are needed to hold it together. 6. Layer cabbage rolls over the sauerkraut until you run out of room or filling. 7. Tuck pieces of the smoked sausages in among the cabbage rolls. 8. A few green bell peppers stuffed and tucked among the cabbage rolls improves the flavor of the dish. If you don't like stuffed peppers, you can cut up the peppers and tuck among the layers. 9. Pour tomatos over the whole thing. 10. Bake for 2 - 3 hours at 350 degrees. They are not done until baked long enough for the juice to flavor the rolls. This tastes excellent served with sour cream on top Carbs 31.3 rice. Omit the rice and the extra water and carbs are 16.2 - 5.7 = 10.5 (without sour cream). Be sure you use a large enough roasting pan as there will be liquid bubbling up. Watch the top as it can get pretty brown. You may need to cover with foil as it completes baking.

George eats one, says he likes it, and then proceeds to get some garlic powder and catsup. He puts catsup on everything. Should I be insulted? He called me his little Uky. I made him Icelandic salmon after Christmas, and he said I was his Norsk Damme (Norwegian Queen). Is this like the way Stuffed Cabbages are made in Pennsylvania?

Paul, Mr Kowalchuk had a wonderful bold voice didn't he..I can almost hear him now in my memories ear. The last time I saw him was after Mrs. Kawalchuk had died and he was at the Memorial Day service at the cemetery. Father still comes out to Bless the graves [picture], and the prayers are sung or said in English. I prefer the musical version as the voices are beautiful and reminds one of their childhood and the ringing out of this music from the Church.

I remember The Easter baskets being blessed in the church basement that wasn't finished at the time, everyone had a candle and a hand made kerchief to cover their delicious foods, a lamb, kielbasi, ham and of course babka. The children also could bring their chocholate bunnies! Baskets were lined up in neat rows while Mr. Kowalchuk helped the priest sing and also I remember the beautiful Maletsky girls, Daria? CHristine? I believe they are still active with the choir. NIce of you to start the church page for customs that people may have forgotten or have not done in years. I use to confuse Krystos Boskrec with Krystos Razdauetsha excuse the spelling. We had lots of bake sales, Christmas cards for sale in the vestibule the sodality had to sell them after masses. Also remember the older ladies swatting me with their pussywillows, they didn't give palms then but St Hedwigs did, now Holy Ghost gives both and you can still plant the pussywillows and take them to the cemeteries for the deceased. Also remember on certain holidays like Memorial day or when the weather was warmer the priest would bless the graves every year, you had to stay by your headstone and wait for what seemed like hours and then slip Father a few bucks. and also Stations of the cross in Ukrainian and English on Wednesdays and Fridays but if you went during school you still had to go at night with your parents. Sometimes they recited in English and sang in Ukrainian. It seemed so long. Thanks for letting me reminice a little,

Merry Christmas! Here is Kahlua Pig. Hawaiians have lu'aus and the tradition is to get a pig.  In the old days they would hunt one of course, nowadays they buy em from farmers...   Anyway, they take the hairs off, gut it, clean it and stick it in an underground oven called an 'imu.'  (ee-moo)    They cover it with banana leaves and lava rocks then dirt.  Actually, my grandfather used to wrap the pig in chicken wire then do that. I guess it's cuz the pig gets so tender it falls apart.  I remember I couldn't wait for the pig to get dug up.  I used to love the crispy pieces that were on the chicken wire. It takes quite a few hours for it to be done.  When it's done you just pull all the meat apart.  It just looks like shredded pork.  But it's that smokey flavor that makes it distinct.... it's really yummy.

We have many beautiful traditions. Christos Rozdietsha Christ is Born, Slaveem Yaho! On Christmas Eve we have Kutya, Fish, No meat or dairy not even a Christmas cookie (chrusty) We all loved to go to midnight mass we felt so grown up and then we got to open a gift since it was Christmas morning. The trees were done so beautiful by the parishers and the manger as well. Does anyone remember what the holy bread was called and when we received it, the alter boys held a basket one for donations and one for us to take the holy bread.

In afew days it will be Christmas Eve for many families. Although you may not observe it as your grandparents or parents did, what most do you remember about the preparations for this most Holy dinner. Do you remember the soup that was served, the different fish that was prepared. Share with us your traditions.

In a few short weeks Ash Wednesday will start the Easter Holy Days. What I remember most about Holy Ghost was the walking around the church several times and up the steps to the Alter to kiss the foot of the Crucifix that was adorned there. I can remember many of the old people walking on their knees to the front and kissing the wounds. I can remember the Pussy Willows given on Palm Sunday in stead of the Palms. Many Willow trees have grown from these branches that were given. After Mass on Palm Sunday you would take the Willow branch to the cemetery and place it on a loved ones grave. What foods did you carry to be Blessed in your Easter Basket, or did the Priest come to your house? Share the traditions that you remember before they are lost.

Holy Ghost Church and School had a proud and caring tradition. The people whether comfortable or poor always had a class about them that stood out in a crowd. The early founders worked hard to leave you a legacy of pride. I can imagine that those proud Ukrainians that worked so hard to give you a church and school are turning over in their graves. Holy Ghost was not built on rumors, but hard work. Khristos rodyvsya! Slavite Yoho! REMEMBER...your heritage.
