A Holy Ghost Reunion was held on 3/26/06 after 9 o'clock Liturgy. It was a breakfast. A chance to see your friends and reminisce about 50-50 chances, processions, bingo, penny parties, bake sales, processions, teachers, nuns, the old school, the class trips, processions and movie day.

If your particular class from Holy Ghost is planning a reunion and would like to have your own page set up, just let me know and I'll be glad to make one for you.  Meanwhile, this page can serve as the general "Holy Ghost" page where you can post your name, contact info and any messages so that you can get in touch with some other Holy Ghost classmates.

Class of '60 unfortunately I am still sitting at the equator south of Hawaii making another attempt to launch a communications satellite. What a beautiful note below, how proud they are of their ancestors. It is a very beautiful church inside and out. I remember in recent years well maybe about ten years ago, ladies of the parish planting roses and weeding, men shoveling the stairs for mass early in the morning, then sweeping the alley where most people parked their cars from broken glass and debris. I also remember the old dog Dobush on a chain, and even though the new school was built gym classes in the old gym. Clapping erasers outside, making potato balls, pizza which was white bread with a slice of cheese and pasta sauce. 40 cent lunches, tuition payments, reports cards from the pastor, paddles at the principals office, a nurse, pictures in the hall ways of the classes, bingo, may fairs, no air conditioning, doors and windows open, the Ukrainian flag with the American on the front property. Fire drills, the convent, being out sick and the teacher calls to see how you were doing... Class trips... IT was a great time and thanks to all the hardworking parishers, for all the fundraising, fox chase trips, MR Stechiw driving the bus to the beach, fun times Mr Wolner, Mrs Halko, Mrs Pierce, Mrs Brotchet, Mrs szasharowsky, and so many more

My grandparents were married at Holy Ghost. My mother Baptized there in 1916 and other siblings before her and after her. I can remember the excitement of my Grandmother and others when the new church would be built across from the Old Wooden building. It was the beginning of the new parish and they all were part of it. They were all part of a wonderful gift to the Ukrainian people, a beautiful new church. I believe that's what many of the long time members of the church often refer to as the founding of the parish. The construction and efforts to give the Parish a new church. My family is long gone, but those that worked to be the founders of the church you now attend, certainly deserve the respect of those now attending. Any original founder of the church would have to be over 100 years old if my math is correct. So I would rejoice in the fact that you have many very old members of your parish still with you to tell you the stories of the struggles they had in this wonderful new country, they or their parents had and the struggle to build their Gift to God.

My grandparents were married in Holy Ghost about 1912, and my mother and possibly all her siblings baptized there as early as 1914. Most long gone, it is interesting to see comments about this wonderful old parish. I think when one is speaking about the founder members of the parish, they may mean the new church that was built and still stands. I can recall how my Bacha' and others were so proud to be part of the new construction of a church.

Hi Caroline, The ladies are going to start making pierogies again this week. Their busy days are Thursday and Friday. I'm not sure if there will be any available for sale or not. If anyone is interested you can call the church hall at 610-494-8734 and inquire or place an order for the next time they are made. The best time to call is on Thursday. They are made and sold every 2 weeks. There isn't any soup, but there is some going to be sold tomorrow after mass. Mass is at 11 am and there is going to be a food after by the Apostleship of Prayer ladies. Thank you everyone for your inquiries! Stumbled across this website by chance, looking for other Ukrainian information.I'm an oldie - went to school from Grades 1-4 (1960-1964), than my family moved to 'The Bronx". The Kandiuk's lived in Claymont Delaware. I remember a school bus (which we called Lulu - old VW van) would come and pick us up. There were quite a few of us in the outskirts of town. Among one of my classmates I remember a Mark Pryszlak, who lived close by.(I beleive the bus driver's name was Maureen Ladnyk. Her daughter was in my class. So was Bohdan Minchak - who now lives in Philadelphia) My first 2 years I went to school in the old red schoolhouse, than in 1963 we moved into the new building. I remember Father Zbyr, who left and went to Philadelphia, and then we had Father Lypyn. Remember very well 2 teachers - Sister Rafaela - who prepared us for First Holy Communion, and Mrs. Martin. Good friends of the family were the Lesyk's - I see Ihor recently passed on his email address. When our family departed Chester for NYC, it was the Lesyk family who took in our dog. It was hearbreaking to leave him behind. I will have to email Ihor. Truly sad that his mother has passed away. She, along with Theodozia Kushnir, (who resides in the Albany area and had 3 daughters - who I see occassionally at Plast camps) and others, started Plast in Chester (Ukrainian Scouting Association). It was great. I was proud to be a member. My fondness of Plast has remained with me throughout the years, and currently I am the President of Plast USA. I owe a lot of my wonderful memories of childhood to the Ukrainian community in Chester and those, who started up Plast there about 1961. I now reside in No. Scituate, RI, where I work here as a Pharmacist at a hospital. I have 3 grown children, married 30 years. My parents, Bohdan and Halyna Kandiuk are still alive and live upstate NY.They arrived with my brother Roman to Chester by boat from England in 1951, I was born at Chester Hospital in 1954. We still have family in the Chester area - Sonia Melnyk, and her nephew George Kobryn and family. The family was close friends with the Kyj's, and occasionally I see Mrs. Kyj (younger) at some rally's in New York. I have many many pictures of my early days in Chester and school related pictures. I will have to borrow them from my parents, scan them and send them along to all. If we hadn't moved to NYC in 1964, I guess I would have graduated 8th grade in 1968. Any one out there from my year??? I'll grab those pictures this weekend when I visit my parents for Ukrainian Christmas and get them to you ASAP. There are MANY!!!
