Jacob Smedley (1862-64), son of William and Deborah (Lightfoot) Smedley, was born in Middletown, December 1, 1801. He was a surveyor and conveyancer, and with Enoch Lewis in 1848 made the survey of a railroad from Chester to West Chester, along Chester creek. In 1847, he was appointed clerk of the County Commissioners, a position he held for twenty-one years. In 1859, he was elected County Auditor. He located in Media in 1873, where he followed his profession as a civil engineer, and died there, September 26, 1886, aged 84 years.
