John Aitkin

(A biographical sketch taken from One Hundred Years, The Delaware County National Bank Chester, PA 1814-1914)

Years in parentheses are years of service as a Director of The Bank of Delaware County and/or The Delaware County National Bank

John Aitkin (1840-1841), with his brother, James Aitkin, conducted a noted general store at Howellville, Edgmont township, which commanded a large trade, drawing patronage for many years from a wide section of Delaware and Chester counties. In 1832, when the United States established a postoffice at Howellville, John Aitkin was appointed the first postmaster. The same year he was County Commissioner. He was one of the organizers, in 1835, of the Delaware County Safety Insurance Company of Chester, now the Delaware Insurance Company of Philadelphia.
