Sloppy Joe's Restaurant

3rd St. near Highland Ave.

Notes: "Sloppy Joe's was located on Third Street near Highland next to the Bank Tavern. It was owned and operated by Joe Madzelan from the early 1940's until he retired in 1979 when it was sold. It remained open for a short time and then closed. It was recently torn down.

Joe's wife Clara worked there as well. They had three sons; Gene, Joe and Chet who helped out from time to time. There were no daughters. There were many waitresses throughout the years but no one seems to remember a Hope Flavia. She was not a relative.

Joe passed away in 1984. Clara is living in Wilmington.

The young man is probably Stanley Madzelan, Sloppy Joe's brother. That's not 100% for sure but both Chet and his brother Joe think that is who it is.

The woman is Mary Novak who worked there for many years as did her daughter Terry some years later.

I think the calendar on the back wall says May 1947 and Joe thinks that's about right.

The two photos were taken in the early 40's. "Sloppy Joe" is on the left next to the Coke machine in picture #1. Joe was my father in law, I am married to Chet."
