Fred J. Statter, 71, of Brookhaven, an intelligence office[r] during World War II, died Oct. 4 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland.

Born in Chester, Mr. Statter had been a resident of Brookhaven for 36 years. A 1944 graduate of Chester High School, he was a Metropolitan Insurance agent for 19 years until his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Statter was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World Wr II, serving in Italy as a top turret gunner and in the central intelligence division.

He was an accomplished baseball player both at Chester High School and with the Sun Oil Athletic Association where he was once scouted by the old Boston Braves.

Mr. Statter enjoyed bowling and had held season tickets for the Philadelphia Eagles since 1960. A life member of the Franklin Fire Co., he was both a firefighter and member of the rescue squad where he was assistant director.

Mr. Statter is survived by his wife, Peg McDermott Statter; three daughters, Karen Longhurst of Washington Township, N.J., Susan Culbert of Marietta, Ga., and Nancy Hicks of Tinicum Township, and seven grandchildren.

A Christian prayer service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, 231 Upland Road, Brookhaven. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple.

Calling hours are after 7 p.m. Wednesday and 8:45 a.m. Thursday at Minshall-Shropshire Funeral Home, Middletown and Knowlton roads, Middletown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 600 N. Jackson St., Media, PA 19063.
