Walter S. Holt, 82, of Boothwyn, Upper Chichester, a longtime Sun Oil employee, died Oct. 12 at home.

He was born and raised in Chester, from a family deeply involved in the Chester police department. He lived in Upper Chichester the past 40 years.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Holt was an area foreman at Sun Oil Co. Plant No. 15, where he began working in 1947. He retired in 1973.

A January 1933 graduate of Chester High School, he attended the former Drexel College in 1935 and 1936, and Temple University from 1937 to 1938. He was a member of the Temple Owl Club.

He was an avid gardener, known for his tomatoes and flowers.



Mr. Holt started working at Sun Shipbuilding Co. in Chester in April 1936 and became a welder in 1937. With his education in metallurgy and welding engineering, he soon became a welding foreman.

During World War II. he continued his college courses at Swarthmore College and courses at the Shipyard in all phases of ship construction and repair.

Mr. Holt was promoted to the welding engineering department at the end of the war.

In 1947 he began working for the Sun Oil Co. in Marcus Hook, continuing his education with evening classes in both petroleum and advanced petroleum engineering during the 1950s and 1960s.

Mr. Holt became a Mason in April 1946 at Lucius H. Scott Lodge 352, Chester.

He was a member of Chester Chapter Hi-12 Club, Scottish Rite Bodies, Wilmington, Del., and Nur Temple Shrine in 1973. Delaware Masonic Club, Shrine Clubs in Delaware State and Delaware County, Nur Legion of Honor and Gems.

Mr. Holt received the Meritorious Service Award, Scottish Rite, Delaware 32 Degree, MSA. The 1993 fall class of Shriners Nur Temple was named in his honor.

In 1996, he received his 50-year pin from the officers of the Lucius H. Scott Lodge in Chester. He was also a member of the Shrine Club of Delaware.

Other memberships included the Sun Oil Honor and Sun Travel clubs, a long-term member of the Delaware County Hall of Fame, Media, over 55 years a member of the Chester Felton Fire Co. and the Delaware County Fireman’s Association, a charter member of the Clan Stewart Society in America and the Nur Highlanders.
