Text of Obituary: John Joseph (Junior) Francis, 69, of Parkside, a former professional firefighter, died June 16 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Upland.

Born in Chester, Mr. Francis was the son of the late John and Margaret Francis. A resident of Parkside since 1960, he worked as a firefighter from 1946 to 1985, when he retired.

Mr. Francis began his fire-fighting career as a volunteer with Hanley Hose Co. in 1946 and became a paid professional in 1972 when the city of Chester ended volunteer firefighting. He also belonged to the Parkside Fire Co., Local 1400 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the Delaware County Firemen's Association, Hanley Hose Co. 1.

Earlier, he was employed as a mechanic for Herb's Chevrolet in Chester for 22 years.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Francis served overseas during the war. He also was a member of Post 3460, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Media, and Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, Brookhaven.

Surviving are his widow, Elizabeth (Betty) Villanova Francis; a son, Leon Francis of Brookhaven; two sisters, Anna Kerrigan and Mildred Langdale, both of Parkside; a brother, Eugene Francis of Hockessin, Del.; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He also was the brother of John DeLorenzo who died in 1982.

His funeral will be at 9 this morning from the Nacrelli-Molla Funeral Home, 2217 Providence Ave., Chester. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 this morning at Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church, Brookhaven. Burial will be in Immaculate Heart Cemetery, Upper Chichester.
