Beverly Y. Blow
Former Principal

Beverly Y. Blow, 74, retired principal of the Chester School District, died Tuesday in Lankenau Hospital, Lower Merion, after two months' illness.

Mr. Blow was principal 17 years of Frederick Douglass Junior High School and retired in 1963 after being employed 39 years in the Chester School District.

He was born at 108 Townsend St., Chester, PA, son of the late John & Lucretia Woodfork Blow, and moved in 1900 to 127 Townsend St., Chester, where he lived until moving to 6109 Carpenter St., Philadelphia, PA in January 1972.

His great-grandparents came to Chester in 1859. His grandfather, Isaac Woodfork, served in the 2nd U.S. Colored Calvary during the Civil War.

Mr. Blow attended Watts Elementary School and graduated in 1917 from Chester High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Lincoln University, Oxford, Chester County, and while at Lincoln served with ASTP Corps (Army Student Training Corps) with rank of captain.

He was a member of Murphy AME Church, Chester. His great-grandmother was one of the founders of the church.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Wright Blow; two daughters, Mercedes Botts of Potomac, MD., and Laura Turner of Philadelphia; two sons, Beverly Y. Blow, Jr. of New York City and Carlton C. Blow of Chester, and 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Murphy Church, 7th and Yarnall Sts. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Collingdale, PA.

Calling hours will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
